APRIL 3, 2014 EAST COUNTY GAZETTE VA NO-NO to $546,250 Sales Price PAGE 5 PAGE 6 EAST COUNTY GAZETTE Inspiration Where have all the men in white hats gone? by Dr. Rev. James L. Snyder hen I was growing up you could always tell who the good men were by the white hats they wore. Bad men always wore black hats. That made it rather convenient for those of us who were watching so we knew who would be winning at the end. When you were in trouble all you had to do was look for someone wearing a white hat. W Not only did the good men wear white hats but also they were able to solve every crime within a 60-minute period. How they did it, is anybody’s guess. Today, nobody wears hats, which has introduced a rather confusing element into our society. You can never tell the bad men from the good men. I know the hat does not make the man but it would sure help to identify the bad man from the good man. I could name them all off. The Lone Ranger, Roy Rogers, Gene Autry, and John Wayne and the list could go on and “Kniffing’s Nursery” owner passes Services set for April 4 The gardening community suffered a great loss on March 29, with the passing of Ted Kniffing. He was the owner of “Kniffing’s Discount Nursery” in Blossom Valley — one of the most popular nurseries in all of San Diego. The soft-spoken nurseryman, who was always eager to share his extensive plant knowledge, had many friends in the area. All are invited to his celebration of life service. Memorial service is set for Friday, April 4, 11 a.m. at Skyline Church, 111330 Campo Rd, La Mesa, CA 91941. Interment to follow at El Cajon Cemetery, 2080 Dehesa Rd., with a gathering at the nursery afterwards. SEE IT HERE? BUY IT HERE? KEEP US HERE? All of these men wore white hats and they all took care of the bad guys in their own way. You could be sure, at the end the good man always won. There was a certain sense of satisfaction knowing that all those bad men paid for their deeds and justice prevailed. Of course, today we could never do this. There is something called “profiling.” And people use this term as though it was a negative thing. “Oh, be careful so you don’t profile that person.” Gene Autry always profiled his men and in the end, justice prevailed. I look at it this way. If it walks like a duck, looks like a duck and quacks like a duck, the chances are pretty high I am looking at a duck. However, in our crazy world of uncertainty it is against the political correctness of our day for me to say this. According to today’s standards, I must look at that “thing” and not judge it by its appearance. “Why, don’t you know, dear brother, you might offend it and give it some kind of an insecurity complex?” How do I know but that duck in front of me will be offended by me calling it a duck? It is the epitome of insensitivity for me to assume that I have the right to call a duck a duck. Who knows, that particular duck might think it is a dog. After all, a quack is not that far from a bark. Meanwhile, back at the ranch, confusion reigns. During the last year, I have spent a little bit of time flying from here to there. And the security at these airports defies the intelligence God gave a termite. Going through the line I have to take off my belt, remove my shoes (which come very close to a stink bomb), empty all the pens out of my pocket and submit myself to a body search. Now, they have some kind of electronic gizmo that enables them to see through my clothes. In 10th grade, I dreamed of such a gadget and I am a little provoked it has taken them so long to perfect this. Two years ago, I traveled from Orlando, Florida to Manila, Philippines, through Japan and back again to Orlando. The trip was fine until I tried to re-enter the United States and upon a luggage search, they discovered I had one of those old-fashioned double blade razors. It was something of an antique that my grandfather gave me 35 years ago. I had been using it to shave ever since. After all these years of shaving with it, it took the intelligence of some security officer to discover this was a highly dangerous weapon. Consequently, I was not allowed to enter the country with it. I must admit that in 35 years of shaving with it, I had shed a little bit of blood. I never guessed in a million years I was in possession of a highly dangerous, illegal weapon. The officer who discovered it did not recognize it. When I told him it was a razor used for shaving, he looked at me suspiciously and then said, “Yeah, sure it is, Buster.” No amount of explanation could convince him that it was part of my toiletries and he insisted that he confiscate it for the protection of everybody in the United States. It was a close shave, but they finally allowed me to enter the United States upon the surrender of this highly sophisticated weapon. Only that security officer knows how close this country came to annihilation from an antique man’s shaver. Of course, looks can be deceiving. People who looked like someone you could trust have perpetrated the biggest frauds in our country. Bernie Madoff comes to mind. Sometimes what you think you are getting you are not really getting. There is a spiritual application here. Some people may look religious on the outside but God knows what is on the inside. “But the LORD said unto Samuel, Look not on his countenance, or on the height of his stature; because I have refused him: for [the LORD seeth] not as man seeth; for man looketh on the outward appearance, but the LORD looketh on the heart” (1 Samuel 16:7 KJV). You can fool everybody in the world, but you cannot fool God. He wears a white hat and always has the last word. Rev. James L. Snyder is pastor of the Family of God Fellowship, P.O. Box 831313, Ocala, FL 34483. His web site is www. jamessnyderministries.com. Dear Dr. Luauna — Love one another Dear Readers, od bless you! I received a phone call regarding last week’s column and I thank God for the caller. The caller shared with me how she felt like I was a racist, because I used the words, “Black Man” in my column. First of all I want to say, “I’m not a racist.” The precious woman who called in doesn’t really know me at all, because if she did she would know different. But I want to make a public apology if I offended anyone else. That was never my intention, so forgive me if I offended anyone else. I love everyone. G I might as well write on the very subject, “Racist;” Webster’s Dictionary; “A person with a prejudiced belief that one race is superior to others.” I was in an orphanage as a young girl. Every one of us little girls had one thing in common, “We were unwanted by our parents.” I never thought once about skin color. We all slept in one large room, with over 50 small beds. Each of us had our own little trunk and foot locker at the end of our beds. It held our extra socks and t-shirts, and an extra uniform. We all wore the same color uniform: navy blue sweater over a white blouse, pleated navy skirt, white ankle socks, and black shoes. Our bedding was the same color, a simple gray army type blanket, pillow, white sheets and pillow case. We were all the same, unwanted. We were a family, Black, White, Mexican, Asian, and American Indian. We didn’t see color; we loved one another, all we had was one another. Did we ever fight? Of course, we were children. Most of us were placed in the orphanage when we were so young, that we never learned to fight throwing racial slurs. Funny, I never thought I was different, until one day I was asked to go out for a cup of coffee with a white man. We had been fishing the rivers of Colorado, and decided to stop and get a bite to eat, we were starving. While we were sitting at the table, the waitress came and looked at me strange, but I thought maybe she was having a bad day. When she brought our coffee, she almost threw it across to me. Still blind to what was happening when my dear friend, looked at the waitress and asked, “What’s your problem?” She looked at me and then him and asked him, ‘What are you doing with her?” Still numb to what she was talking about, I just smiled and looked around to see who she was talking about. My sweet friend noticed I was blind to what she was saying, reached for my hand, smiled and said, “We don’t need to give one penny to this place, let’s get out of here.” He walked with me hand in hand and when we got to the door, he turned around and said to the waitress, “You’re sick in the heart!” When we were in his jeep, I asked, “What was all that?” He just smiled and said to me, “Something you really don’t need to worry about!” What I didn’t know was she was talking about me. I’m full blooded American Indian; he was white with screaming blue eyes, and she had a problem with him being with anyone who was not white. I still smile today, because I think it bothered the waitress and my sweet dear friend more than it bothered me. My grandfather used to say, “We all bleed RED.” John 13:34; “A new commandment I give unto you, that ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another.” Reader, YOU are God’s treasure. I love you! Nothing is too hard for JESUS. Write: ATFA-Dr. Luauna Stines, P.O. Box 2800, Ramona, CA 92065 Visit my website: www.atouchfromabove.org For Prayer Mountain reservations: 760-315-1967. Laughter is the Best Medicine A God is great! woman hurried to the pharmacy to get medication, got back to her car and found that she had locked her keys inside. The woman found an old rusty coat hanger left on the ground. She looked at it and said, “I don’t know how to use this.” She bowed her head and asked God to send her some HELP. Within 5 minutes a beat-up old motorcycle pulled up, driven by a bearded man who was wearing an old biker skull rag. He got off of his cycle and asked if he could help. “Yes, my daughter is sick. I’ve locked my keys in my car. I must get home. Please, can you use this hanger to unlock my car?” she said. “Sure.” He walked over to the car, and in less than a minute the car was open. She hugged the man and through tears said, “Thank You SO Much! You are a very nice man.” The man replied, “Lady, I am NOT a nice man. I just got out of prison yesterday; I was in prison for car theft.” The woman hugged the man again sobbing, “Oh, thank you, God! You even sent me a Professional!” Is GOD great or what!?! For the animal it is a natural environment where he tests his limits against any force of nature or man. For the contestant it is a choice to test his limits against the unknown. At the Annual Lakeside Rodeo they come together in this arena as opposed to the corral, the ranch or the plains. Welcome to the Lakeside Rodeo Arena, with its long and varied history and its undisputable value to the “Youth of Lakeside.” It all started… on July 5 of 1920 when the first rodeo was actually held in Lakeside. Organized by resident Bill Kuhner, it was held just south of Lindo Lake in a makeshift arena. For several years there was no rodeo, but it returned to Lakeside in 1933, when the “Lakeside Rodeo Association” was formed. The rodeo was moved to an area west of what is now Channel Road, where the organizers built a grandstand, chutes and fences within the days prior to the event, then had to take it all down after the event… only to put it back up for the next rodeo. The Rodeo was held infrequently throughout the next several years, moving to several locations. El Capitan Stadium Association is created… In the mid 1960’s a group of parents were trying to organize fundraisers to build a lighted football stadium for the El Capitan High School. The parents of students attending, or about to enter the high school, wanted to make sure that the school provided the same level of services as the other schools within the growing district and, with the district building another high school at that time, money was just not available to provide sports facilities for the students of El Capitan High. The totally volunteer group of parents, school administrator/teachers and community leaders, organizing themselves under the title of “El Capitan Stadium Association”, eventually met with a long time resident cowboy of Lakeside, Ben Bruton, who suggested once again putting on a rodeo for a fundraiser. ...And Rodeo became an Annual event! The first rodeo for the newly formed Stadium Association was held in the spring of 1964. There were no rodeo grounds, so Ben found cwille.com Christian Wille III Technologist temporary seating, chutes as well as fencing and put on a rodeo in a vacant field much like it was done in the past. The event was successful enough that the Stadium Association decided that they could do this every year as long as they had a place to hold the event. In 1966 the El Capitan Stadium Association was formally incorporated as a “not for profit” organization. An Incredible Gift to the Youth of Lakeside... In December of 1969, Mrs. Marion Carlson approached the organization and gifted 8 acres of vacant land, the current site of the Rodeo facility, to the group for fundraising for Youth and to hold the Rodeo. Through the years, members (volunteers) left and new members (volunteers) joined, but the group remained focused and completed the building of the football field, lighting, bleachers and concession stands for the High School. Along with the school improvements, the group started working on building the Lakeside Rodeo Arena as a permanent fixture in the community. During that time, the Stadium Association began the annual leasing of a portion of the rodeo land to the Grossmont Union School District to allow El Capitan High School to build and maintain an Agricultural Department in East County and in 2012 Grossmont Union School District gained ownership of that area to remodel and proudly create an outstanding Agricultural education center. The 1980’s were busy for the Stadium Association. The Eastern San Diego County Junior Fair had been held for decades at Gillespie Field, but was asked to relocate. The Fair Board and The Stadium Association got together and went to the Grossmont Union School District, where they asked to lease a piece of land directly behind the now existing Rodeo Grounds, next to the track. That lease was fully granted to the Stadium Association and then the Association sub-let to the Fair Board for the “Jr. Fair” to be held on-site each year. The annual “Jr Fair” is the gateway to the San Diego County Fair for livestock and Home Arts Youth Exhibitors. In the late 1980’s the El Capitan Stadium Association felt that the high school was not the only entity in the community that needed their help. The Association changed their Constitution to benefit the “Youth of Lakeside.” To date, there is probably not a Youth organization or school within Lakeside’s boundaries that has not enjoyed a substantial financial support from the Association. Youth sports has acquired improvements to their individual fields, equipment and outfitting in uniforms of their teams. The members assisted the Eastern San Diego County Jr. Fair in building their current facility and each year we continue to financially participate in the Fair auction to help the FFA and 4-H participants sell their individual projects. Current donations Fiscal year April 2013 to January, 2014 the ECSA recorded $104,000.000 in monetary donations to the Youth to date. In addition, ECSA provides over $20,000.00 in annual scholarships to graduating seniors and encouragement scholarships to eighth grade students to keep them focused on completing their education. Jennifer Connelly and Russell Crowe star in Noah Photo credit: Niko Tavernise/Paramount Pictures/Regency Enterprises. Review by Diana Saenger fter hearing a trailer of writer and director Darren Aronofsky’s Noah announce “if you liked Titanic or Gladiator you’ll like Noah,” I knew we were in for a mystifying rendition of the Biblical Noah as found in the Bible. A The beginning of the film starts simply explaining how God (which the film always refers to as the creator) began creating earth and people. We learn that E-noch begat Methuselah (Anthony Hopkins), who begat La-mech (Marton Csokas) who begat Noah (Russell Crowe). These men are briefly spoken about throughout the movie. Noah now has a family, his wife Naameh (Jennifer Connelly) and three sons, Shem (Douglas Booth), Ham (Logan Lerman), and Japheth (Leo McHugh Carroll). They roam mountain sides trying to find food and avoid a band of warriors ruled by Tubal-cain (Ray Winstone). He’s a descendant of Cain, the son of Adam, who killed his brother that resulted in God’s wrath of mankind’s wickedness. After experiencing a vivid and disturbing dream, Noah believes God is guiding him to build a huge ark to house his family plus two of every animal on Earth, but for no other people because they are deemed unrighteous. Before beginning that job, Noah takes his family, now including an orphan girl, Ila (Emma Watson), to visit Noah’s grandfather Methuselah, who gives them all some spiritual advice. As Noah and his family move into the place marked for building the ark, a strange group called the Walkers meets them. Big and moving like terminators, these creatures appear made of huge rocks connected together to look like – well, rock terminators. They assume Noah is an enemy, but soon learn he was sent by God to build the ark. Once built, the birds fly in, the snakes and large lizards slither in and the animals storm their way to the ark and are put into a long sleep by an ancient smoke. (I couldn’t help wondering why that smoke didn’t work on humans). The rains begin and the ark rises and rolls in the sea. Then Tubal-cain shows up with hundreds under his spell, and they attack Noah and the ark. Ham has watched the love between his brother and his wife, so he wants to find a woman before all of mankind gets destroyed. That’s why he makes a mad dash into Tubalcain’s warriors and rescues a young woman he hopes to bring on to the ark. The Walkers become Noah’s defenders as the huge battle becomes more of a scene from the movie 300 than one read about in Genesis. Although not many other scenes enthrall us here, the ark certainly holds viewers hostage. Noah has fulfilled what God commanded of him, but now he’s become extreme and thinks he must also kill his own family, including the new babies just born to his son and daughter-in-law. Noah comes across as an incredible epic production. The visual effects are superb; the action after the first third of the film is intense and non-stop. Aronofsky collaborated closely with production designer Mark Friedberg (Mildred Pierce) to design and build the ark. Friedberg began the process more than a year before production, focusing first on proportions. “In Genesis the dimensions of the ark are laid out as 30 cubits high, by 50 cubits wide, by 300 cubits long,” Friedberg said. “But there are Egyptian cubits and Venetian cubits – so we had to go deep into history to try to figure it out.” The cast is ver y good. Crowe, a great choice for Noah, succeeds in projecting the stamina required to seize God’s command about destroying mankind as well as the man’s feeling of guilt if he fails to complete the mission, which he decides involves killing his own family. Connelly All sorts of buzz filled the media about this film from the day it was announced. Is the movie about water and the environment or about moral, faith-based people? Some Christians panned it; others thought it would be worth a look. The mix of anarchy and a heavenly presence interspersed with wars emerges as an interesting concept. However, I’m not sure I agree with Aronofsky when he said, “I think it will be very exciting for people to be reminded how amazing these stories are — so I was very focused on making this film equally available for believers and non-believers.” The balance between the two seems very slim in Noah. If you go for one, you’re getting a lot of the other as well. Hollywood, it seems, is on a new track to relieve more Christians of some of their money. Movieguide reports that 83 percent of movies now feature biblical or moral content. The recent Son of God made its cost back the first weekend and has now earned more than two million dollars. Coming in April is Heaven Is for Real (adapted from the book Heaven Is for Real: A Little Boy’s Astounding Story of His Trip to Heaven and Back by Todd Burpo and Lynn Vincent). And I’ve heard rumors that more films about Mary, Moses and Cain & Abel are also in the works, which looking at new data, many will be eager to see. If you cannot afford an attorney, you may be eligible for free legal services from a nonprofit legal services program. You can locate these nonprofit groups at the California Legal Services Web site (www.lawhelpcalifornia. org), the California Courts Online Self-Help Center (www.courtinfo.ca.gov/selfhelp), or by contacting your local court or county bar association. NOTE: The court has a statutory lien for waived fees and costs on any settlement or arbitration award of $10,000 or more in a civil case. The court’s lien must be paid before the court will dismiss the case. LEWIS in the Superior Court of California, County of SAN DIEGO. The Petition for Probate requests that ROBERT F. LEWIS be appointed as personal representative to administer the estate of the decedent. The Petition requests the decedent’s will and codicils, if any, be admitted to probate. The will and any codicils are available for examination in the file kept by the court. The Petition requests authority to administer the estate under the Independent Administration of Estates Act. (This authority will allow the personal representative to take many actions without obtaining court approval. Before taking certain very important actions, however, the personal representative will be required to give notice to interested persons unless they have waived notice or consented to the proposed action.) The independent administration authority will be granted unless an interested person files an objection to the petition and shows good cause why the court should not grant the authority. A hearing on the petition will be held in this court on 05/01/2014 at 01:30 pm in Dept. PC-2 located at 1409 4th Avenue, San Diego, CA 92101-3105 Central Division/Madge Bradley Building. If you object to the granting of the petition, you should appear at the hearing and state your objections or file written objections with the court before the hearing. Your appearance may be in person or by your attorney. If you are a creditor or a contingent creditor of the decedent, you must file your claim with the court and mail a copy to the personal representative appointed by the court within the later of either (1) four months from the date of first issuance of letters to a general personal representative, as defined in section 58(b) of the California Probate Code, or (2) 60 days from the date of mailing or personal delivery to you of a notice under section 9052 of the California Probate Code. Other California statutes and legal authority may affect your rights as a creditor. You may want to consult with an attorney knowledgeable in California law. You may examine the file kept by the court. If you are a person interested in the estate, you may file with the court a Request for Special Notice (form DE-154) of the filing of an inventory and appraisal of estate assets or of any petition or account as provided in Probate Code section 1250. A Request for Special Notice form is available from the court clerk. Attorney for Petitioner: Merrianne E. Dean, Esq., The Dean Law Group. This one involves the widely practiced habit of driving with a pet on one’s lap. Why it’s a problem There are no real statistics to say exactly how many crashes and other traffic incidents pets on laps cause each year. However, The AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety notes that taking your eyes off the road for just two seconds doubles your chance of a crash, and two seconds is all it would take for a frightened or excited pet to jump up on you, claw you, climb up onto the dashboard, or worse - crawl under the brake pedal. The facts A 2011 AAA and Kurgo survey sought to ferret out the truth about how and why people drive with their pets, as well as any potential distractions their furry friends might potentially cause. The findings were interesting, to say the least; nearly 60 percent of respondents had driven with their pets in the last month, and 31 percent admitted to being distracted by their pet while driving. Distractions included everything from feeding and petting their pets to taking their photos while driving. Seventeen percent of respondents who drove with their pet - nearly one in five - admitted to either allowing their pet to sit on their lap or holding them while driving. Twenty-three percent admitted to using their hands or arms to secure their pet when they hit the brakes. The reasons Respondents cited several reasons for not restraining their pets in the car. The biggest of these reasons was their pet’s temperament; they considered their pet to be calm enough to make restraints unnecessary. Many respondents had simply never considered the idea of restraints. Some said they didn’t use restraints because they only went on short trips. And a few respondents noted that they wanted their dog to be able to put his head out the window. The dangers Beyond potentially causing an accident, there are other very real dangers to allowing a pet to sit on your lap. If a crash were to occur, a small dog could easily be crushed by a deployed airbag or thrown from the car and injured. In addition, during a crash an unrestrained dog can act as a missile. As AAA National Traffic Safety Programs Manager Jennifer Huebner-Davidson notes, “An unrestrained 10-pound dog in a crash at only 30 mph will exert roughly 300 pounds of pressure . . . Imagine the devastation that can cause to your pet and anyone in its path.” Scarlet, 1-year-old Cattle Dog & Pit Bull Terrier mix female. Pets on lap while driving unsafe and illegal hile driving under the influence was once the major focus of safety on the road, distracted driving of all kinds has gained national attention in recent years. Texting and driving has proven to be the latest serious road hazard; it has cost a number of lives, and 42 states have developed laws and campaigns against it. 1275 N. Marshall, El Cajon, (619) 441-1580. The solution States are taking notice of the potential dangers. Hawaii has made it illegal to carry a pet on one’s lap while driving, and many other states have introduced, considered or enacted legislation meant to stop drivers from traveling unsafely with pets. As a result, in some states, driving with your pet on your lap can earn you a traffic stop or a fine. Even in some states where there is no specific law pertaining to driving with a pet on one’s lap, you can still be cited for doing so under broader distracted driving laws. Increased awareness would likely also make a great difference. AAA notes that drivers who have heard of cases where unrestrained dogs were injured or caused injury to someone during a crash were three times likely to use a restraint. While we love our pets and want them to enjoy every experience with us, the safest place for them (and everyone else riding along) is to be properly secured in the back seat. There are a number of options available for properly securing your pet that are quite comfortable and still allow them some freedom of movement. The small investment is well worth it if it means the peace of mind of pet parents, and the safety of their furry kids.
