Naming “Sukiyaki” comes from a world famous Japanese song by Kyu Sakamoto, invitation to discover the diversity of our World. It is also a famous Japanese dish mixing many different ingredients in a same pot. LOCATION: SUKIYAKI MEETS THE WORLD Festival takes place in Nanto-City (Toyama region), 670km2 wide (same as Biwa Lake or Singapore) with a population of 60,000. Main activities are rice culture and tourism (UNESCO world Heritage of Gokayama). Nearest cities are Toyama-City and Kanazawa-City(both pop.500,000). To Nanto City, 2h30 needed from Nagoya, and 4h from Tokyo or Osaka. International flights to Toyama or Komatsu from Seoul, Shanghai, Taipeh, Dalian and Vladivostok. All the program is defined by a volunteer staff team (200 persons), gathering every Thursday all year long (25 to 30 meetings per year) to decide the shapes and the contents of the festival. Every stage, every workshop, every conference is led by a volunteer team. Artist care, stage sound & lights, instruments, promotion, information documents, designs, catering, etc… are thought and prepared by volunteers, from the beginning to the end. FESTIVAL MAIN PERIOD ● Sukiyaki Festival proposes 4 stages. - “Helios stage” - “Floral stage” (outdoor, 3000 p) “Garden stage” (outdoor, 500 p) “Club stage” (indoor, 150 p) In 2008 has started the “Sukiyaki parade” along the city. ● (indoor, 1200 p) Artistic priority is given to music rarely introduced in Japan: AFRICA, ASIA, LATIN AMERICA, OCEANIA and sharing actual debates on identity, modernity and westernization. Between 5 to 10 groups from abroad are invited every year. All these artists stay for a period between 1 week and 1 month and lead a workshop course. Local artists are also introduced (5 to 10 groups every year), in relation with those debates. ● Almost all the guest take part to the workshops/classes. Symposiums, movie projection, exhibitions are also presented. More than 10,000 persons attend to the festival every year. PRE-FESTIVAL PERIOD Introducing World Music means working on its understanding. This is a key point especially in such a rural area. With concerts and workshops throughout the year in city’s old streets, temples, schools, hospitals…, Sukiyaki’s main goal is to make those music living in Nanto area permanently, to allow a personal appropriation of different cultures, to create curiosity and interest. Many teams directly born from this workshop process now practice and perform throughout the year: - Sukiyaki Steel Orchestra (steel band for adults) - Kibun Wa Caribbean (elementary school steel band) - Salaam-Aleikum (African and Korean contemporary percussion group) - Samulnori Shigu (children Korean percussion group) - Sukiyaki Oyayubi Polorinz (African thumb piano group) - Tu Maracca (Brazilian Nordeste percussion group) Sukiyaki Steel Orchestra Kibun Wa Caribbean Salaam-Aleikum Samulnori Shigu Sukiyaki Oyayubi Polorinz Tu Maracca The festival also proposes a residence program using traditional houses for its guest artists, giving opportunities to create new performances, to practice, to record, etc… with sometimes as a result the birth of new units able to tour internationally such as “SUKIAFRICA Sukiyaki Allstars” (tours in Japan, Korea, Africa), “CUATRO SUKIYAKI MINIMAL” (tours in Japan, Korea, Mexico). The festival has built its own event network, in Japan (Sapporo, Tokyo, Nagoya, Osaka, Fukuoka) and abroad. Projects or tours are built every year.
