EXERCISING WITH ST. IGNATIUS

I was a weakling when it came to this kind of
exercising — give me a treadmill or the weight
room any day over the exercise program
St. Ignatius had laid out. This was my
conclusion back in grad school when I had my
first experience with the Spiritual Exercises of
Al Gustafson St. Ignatius. The Exercises are a 500-year-old
spiritual formation program created by Ignatius
of Loyola, based on his own spiritual journey. The Exercises
have been part of the spiritual development of every brother
and priest who has ever been a member of the Society of Jesus,
as well as countless lay Catholics, Protestants and even Jews,
Muslims and Hindus. The Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius are
designed to get you into spiritual shape, and my first encounter
with them showed me just how out of shape I was.
The first “exercises” my spiritual director gave me was, at the end
of each day, to review the past 24 hours and name two positive
feelings and two negative feelings I had during that period of time.
Well, each evening I would find a quiet place in my apartment,
light a candle and proceed to review my day. Lots of things
happened during each 24-hour period, but my conclusion was
always the same. I didn’t have any feelings. The following week
I went back to see my spiritual director and I apologized because
I hadn’t had any feelings that week. He gave me one of those looks
my father used to give me when he would wonder if he was really
cut out to be a parent or not. My director quickly recovered
though, and said, “If you ever want a real relationship with the
Lord, you are going to have to learn how to pay attention.”
Ignatius wants us to learn how to pay attention because God is
always present in our experience. God is incarnate in each of
our life stories. The Exercises help us to reflect on the
experience of God in our story —so you and I can experience
more of God in our story.

and sharing their experience with one another through
prayerful conversation.
We have learned how to pay close attention to the story of our own
lives, to witness our own personal journey not just through our
own eyes, but through God’s eyes — and lo and behold, we have
found Love incarnate in the very details of each of our stories.
Fifteen very different stories lived by very different people, and
yet the encounter each of us has had with God has produced very
similar graces. In these past months, we have each developed a
growing awareness and confidence in the God of goodness who
sustains us day by day. We have each experienced a greater
acceptance of our own gifts and our own limits, as well as an
openness to the unknown and a deepening desire for more.
Participating in these exercises together, we have certainly been
drawn into friendship with one another, but beyond that, we have
been drawn, and many of us for the first time, into a friendship
with the Lord. We Catholics usually don’t talk about having a
personal relationship with God, we save that kind of language for
our Protestant brothers and sisters. Ignatius knew that since
God’s love is present in the details of our lives, each of us will
encounter God in a very personal way. This is why at the
beginning of the Exercises, he instructs those spiritual directors
giving the Exercises to trust the relationship between the Creator
and the creature — even when the creature is not able to
identify his own feelings.

Starting last November, I have had the privilege of participating
in the Spiritual Exercises of St. Ignatius with a group of fifteen

The Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults
(RCIA) is a process designed for those
who are considering joining the Catholic
Church by celebrating the sacraments of
initiation (baptism, confirmation, Eucharist) at the Easter Vigil. The
process welcomes adults who have never been baptized, those who
have been baptized in another Christian tradition, as well as adult
Catholics who wish to be confirmed.

Approximately forty people per year have been welcomed into the
Church through the RCIA process at Old St. Pat’s. The RCIA is an
engaging, dynamic, respectful, challenging and — ENJOYABLE
journey. Members of Old St. Patrick's graciously host the RCIA,
walking with candidates as they embark upon a journey filled with
questions, conversations, learning, and community-building.

PUT YOUR HANDS UP FOR DETROIT…I LOVE THIS CITY

On Monday, July 12, twenty-four
Foundations teens and six young adult
chaperones traveled to Detroit, MI to
partner with the Motor City Blight Busters,
a nonprofit organization dedicated to the
stabilization and revitalization of Detroit
neighborhoods. The Worktour soundtrack
blared in each of the three large vans as we
pulled away from Old St. Pat’s for a week of

service and fun. The soundtrack is
compiled of songs selected by each participant embodying the
Detroit Worktour experience. The first song, always selected to
relate specifically to the place we are traveling to, was a dance
number by Fedde le Grand entitled “Put Your Hands Up for
Detroit, I Love this City.” To be honest, I thought it was
random, as the only words in the entire song are those in the
title. But little did I know those ten words would take on a
whole new meaning by the end of the week.
The Detroit love was epitomized by two Foundations members,
Dan Schrage and Sean Goebelbecker. Dan, one of the
chaperones, joined us from Boston. His fascination of Detroit
lead us to appreciate Detroit’s music traditions, architecture,
and spirit that he eloquently connected to his Worktour song
selection. Dan’s desire to educate the group on all facets of
Detroit deepened the meaning of our service, as we connected
with the heart of the city through Dan’s eyes and contagious
energy. Sean, a high school sophomore, shared in Dan’s deep
appreciation for Detroit music, and after being immersed in
Detroit culture, he was moved to rap in front of sixty
strangers. More on that shortly…
How can people like Dan, Sean, and dance artist Fedde le
Grand love Detroit? While a mere 300 miles from Chicago,
did you know Detroit’s population
What is there has been reduced by more than half
in the last 50 years (from two million,
to love?
to approximately 900,000)? You can
purchase a home for less than $7,500
(yes, that’s right, seven thousand five hundred dollars)? There
is a food desert in Detroit? The food desert has resulted from a
combination of three factors: there are no major grocery store
chains in Detroit proper; 40 percent of Detroit residents don’t
own cars; and the public transportation system isn’t reliable or
robust. What is there to love?
The love comes from people like John George, the Motor City
Blight Busters founder, who is inspired to replace negative
energy (fire damaged houses, overgrown landscaping, littered
streets) with positive spirit (urban farms, tidy neighborhoods,
city art centers where neighborhood residents share their
“creative juices”). During the course of the week, John
motivated the Foundations teens to see the love and greater
purpose to tearing down abandoned homes, cleaning up dump
sites and neighborhoods, and building lawn furniture out of
scrap materials. John not only exuded positive energy, but also
attracted it. John’s friend Mike, a retired ironworker looking to
make a difference, partnered with us during the week to share
his lifelong love of Detroit through his poetry, generosity, and
mentorship. The Motor

St. Pat’s teens, whom he
asked to leave their mark
by creating a sign that
now hangs in the
entryway of the shop.
Which brings me back to Sean…the Holy Spirit inspired him to
write a rap about Detroit including shout-outs to the Motor City
Blight Busters, the Woodworks Shop, the deeper meaning of
service, and the funny moments of the week. Furthermore,
Sean performed the rap in front of sixty people on our last night
at “Creative Juices,” the open-mic night sponsored by Blight
Busters. It was amazing! While Sean described this as the
“greatest moment of his life,” I can assure you it was one of the
greatest moments of mine. Sean’s desire to fearlessly share his
gifts and energy embodied the Worktour experience.
As a member of the Old St. Pat’s community, I was so proud
of the twenty-four teenagers who worked so hard and so fast
Blight Busters struggled to keep up with us; and also proud to
know that 18-year-old veteran Worktour participants were
moved to pass down traditions to novice 14-year-old-members
(shaving heads, van dance parties, assigning funny group
names like Phat Gurlz, never complaining), and that these
teens understand by celebrating each other, you celebrate
life (birthday activities, positive affirmations, S.W.E.A.T.
moments). Won’t you join me to put your hands up for
Becky Terlep, the visionary who created this unique teenage
experience; for the Foundations teens who inspired people
like John George and Mike, for ensuring the future is in
good hands, and for Detriot…I LOVE this City.

Please join us for the Celebration of the Renovation and Resurrection of St. Clare Parish on Sunday, Aug. 29.
There are a number of items needed to make their “new” Church building feel whole. These include an altar,
crucifix above the altar, tabernacle, lecturn, candlesticks, and sanctuary lights. So many things we take for
granted will help make the people of St. Clare feel they are Church again.
About Harbor of Hope
This is the final year of the five-year commitment Old St. Pat’s made to help rebuild the homes, community,
Church and Parish Center of St. Clare. While Hurricane Katrina was able to destroy the buildings, nothing has
been able to destroy the spirit and faith of the people of St. Clare. We ask your generosity one last time as
construction nears completion with a September target for the dedication of the “new and improved” Church
building and Parish Center. We will hold a final Harbor of Hope fundraiser on the fifth anniversary of
Katrina’s landfall on Sunday, Aug. 29, 2010, beginning with Mass at 12:45 p.m., celebrated by Fr. John Cusick,
followed by a reception in the Church Hall.

C OMMUNITY FAITH F ORMATION
FAMILY MINISTRY
Teachers Needed for Partners 2010 - 2011
It’s been said it takes a village to raise a child. At Old St. Patrick’s
we believe it takes a community to help us on the journey to "get"
to God. With this in mind, the Partners Program was created to
form a connection with parents to bring religious education to the
children in our community. Its aim is to assist, support, and
facilitate parents’ endeavors to cultivate a rich experience of God
with and in their children.
The Partners Program offers thematic bimonthly classes, October
through May, for children in preschool through Confirmation. This
year, the Partners Program will revolve around the theme “Loving
Your Neighbor as Yourself…” — reflecting the focus of the entire
Old St. Pat’s community theme: “Life Without Borders.” Classes
are held from 10:45 a.m. to noon in the Frances Xavier Warde
School (FXWS) classrooms. The teaching staff is a volunteer
group made up of professional teachers, parents, and others
interested in helping our children learn about God.
The Partners Program offers children an understanding of God, the
Church, sacraments, religious holidays, and values. The teachers
use stories from Sacred Scriptures and religious textbooks in the
classes. Parents are strongly encouraged to participate in a
workshop on the first Sunday of each month to help develop the
monthly theme at home and foster the partnership.
Teachers are paired in classrooms. If you have a friend who might
like to teach with you, terrific! If you’d like the director of Family
Ministry to pair you up, that can be done as well.
ALL YOU
NEED IS
Commitment from the teachers is twice a month, on the first and
third Sundays. Classes begin Oct. 3, 2010, and conclude on
May 15, 2011. Teachers should be in the classroom following
Communion at the 9:30 a.m. Mass (usually by 10:30 a.m.) and
stay with the children until all are picked-up by their parents
(usually no later than 12:10 p.m.).

Liturgy of the Word for Children
After the opening prayers on the dates listed below, children age three through
second grade are called to attend “Liturgy of the Word” (LOW). They are escorted
behind the altar where they gather in the rectory for an interactive session that
helps them learn about the readings of the day in language and activities they will
easily understand. The children rejoin their families after the Homily and share in
the rest of the Mass. All children three to second grade are invited, and no
registration is necessary.

OLD ST. PAT’S YOUNG ADULT MINISTRY
In between the great stories of Jesus performing miracles,
feeding thousands, and teaching the masses, He and His
disciples would go off to a quiet place to refocus and
renew themselves in prayer. Now the same invitation is
extended to Old St. Pat’s young adults: Come and “get
away” for a weekend of camping, relaxation, prayer,
reflection, fun, and of course — campfires and S’mores!
Applications are available on the Old St. Pat’s Web site,
and the first 25 individuals to apply will be accepted.

Anna Van Handel
Hello Members and Friends of Old St. Pat’s!
My name is Anna Van Handel and I recently
accepted the position of manager of meeting
planning and hospitality for Old St. Pat’s. I join
you all the way from Wisconsin! I have been
living in Chicago for nearly four weeks and I am
loving it so far! The change is quite drastic; I was born and raised in a small town
called Little Chute, Wisconsin, about 30 minutes south of Green Bay —
and, yes, that indeed makes me a Packer fan, and an official cheesehead!
I graduated from the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point in May 2009. While
in college, I studied Communication with an emphasis in public relations and
interpersonal organization. I worked all through college as an event planner, which
I loved, both on and off campus.
What brings me to Chicago you may ask? I have had a desire to live in a city for the
majority of my life. I have been pursuing Chicago for many years, and Old St. Pat’s
is what finally brought me here! I am excited to be here and learn more about the
Old St. Pat’s community!

Outside of work, I enjoy photography. I love capturing the beautiful things life has
to offer, and someday I hope to pursue this interest in more depth. I also love

I want to thank everyone for being so welcoming and helpful; the transition so far
has been easy with the help of all of you! I apologize in advance as I have a hard
time remembering names, so please be patient with me!

The Adoption Group
The rest rooms are located on the lower level of the
church, at the foot of the north stairwell, in the foyer of the
church hall, and at the west side of the hall. The hall may
be reached via the north stairwell, or the elevator in the
north tower only. The balcony can be accessed by using
either the north or south stairwell.
In consideration for all, please put all cell phones and
beepers on silent mode as we begin Mass.
If you have difficulty approaching the altar for Holy
Communion, please tell an usher, and Communion will be
brought to you.
Low-Gluten Hosts Available at all Masses
Low-gluten hosts are available for those who, for
health reasons, cannot receive the regular Communion
host. If you would like to receive a low-gluten host,
please inform the Mass coordinator, before Mass
begins. At Communion, please identify yourself
to the presider as the person to receive the
low-gluten host.
Braille and large print worship aids are available for your
convenience. Please ask an Usher if you would like to use
one of these items.
We do have a small lift, without stairs, for access to the
church and hall. The entrance is on Des Plaines Street,
through the gate just north of the main church steps.
If you need a hearing device, please ask an usher.
A sign language interpreter will be available at the 5 p.m.
Mass every Sunday. Please sit in the second or third
pews on the Joseph side of the altar if you would like to
utilize this service.
EXIT In case of an emergency, please exit the church through
the three sets of double doors located in the rear of the
church or by the exit door located behind the
Altar screen.
If there is anyway we can be of better service, please let us know.

St. Pat’s Opportunities for Kids to Experience Service
Inspired by Old St. Pat’s Outreach, S.P.O.K.E.S. was formed to
introduce our children to outreach projects in which they can feel
they have made a difference to others.
Moms And Tots Group
The Moms and Tots Group meets at least monthly, usually on
weekday mornings. We would love to have you and your little
ones join us. Meet and socialize with other moms while the kids
play. Suggested for newborns through preschool age.

Parents and Tots Group
The Parents and Tots Group is open to moms and/or dads and

Memorial of St. Monica
(patron saint of mothers and
wives, 333 – 389)
Monica was born of Christian parents in Tagaste,
North Africa in 333, and was married young to a
government official named Patricius. Though he
was not a Christian, and had a bad temper, Monica
bore her burdens patiently, and their life together
was relatively peaceful. Monica gave birth to three
children, Augustine, Navigius, and Perpetua.
Augustine, while brilliant, was a lazy and
dishonest youth, whose bad behavior caused his
mother much grief. Augustine persisted as a selfindulgent teen, and at nineteen years of age,
joined the heretical Manichaean sect. When he
began to spout heresies, Monica became
distressed and intensified her efforts to bring
him to Christ.
During this anguished period of prayer for her son,
Monica consulted a bishop who had himself been
a Manichaean before he became a Christian. He
declined to intervene with Augustine, whom, the
bishop correctly observed, was not open to hearing
the truth. She persisted tearfully, and the bishop
consoled Monica by saying, "the child of those
tears shall never perish," which she took as a sign
from God. Though he continued in his heresies for
nine years, Monica followed Augustine to Rome
and then to Milan, in an effort to rescue her son
from his errors. In Milan she met Ambrose, who
helped lead Augustine into the true faith, and at
the age of 33, Augustine was baptized.
Not long after, as Monica was preparing to return
to Africa, she died at the age of 56 at the Port of
Ostia. As recounted by Augustine, before she died
she told him: "There was indeed one thing for
which I wished to tarry a little in this life, and that
was that I might see you a Catholic before I died.
My God hath answered this more than abundantly,
so that I see you now made His servant and
spurning all earthly happiness. What more am I
to do here?”
An account of Monica's early life, her childhood,
marriage, her final days and her death, is given in
Confessions, Book IX, 8-12. Augustine was so
deeply moved by his mother's death that he was
inspired to write his Confessions, in which he
expresses his gratitude for her life.
