M.I.A. Surfcamp is the only resort in the Mentawai Islands which can lay claim to having four waves – three of which
are known as world-class rights – directly in front of the camp.
Description
We are a newly built surf camp in Mentawai Islands Indonesia. We cater for all surfing levels and have one of the
best spots throughout. We are also one of the most affordable camps with high value, so no misses out.
We offer luxurious and spacious, beachfront, traditional-styled accommodation and our maximum eight guests-pertrip policy guarantees you get more waves and more good times. Our first bungalow is very spacious which
features two handcrafted king single bunk beds, good quality mosquito nets, plenty of wardrobe space per person,
and excellent spring mattresses. Our second bungalow is also spacious with two rooms, MAKING ONE ROOM A
COUPLES ROOM ON REQUEST. Room one features a handcrafted bunk bed (queen mattress on the bottom bunk
with a king single mattress on the top), also along with good quality mosquito nets, wardrobes, and excellent spring
mattresses; and room two has king single hand crafted bunk bed along with good quality mosquito nets,
wardrobes, and excellent spring mattresses aswell. We have skilled chefs to serve you a range of high-quality
Indonesian and Western cuisines between surfs, and a friendly, accommodating crew to assist you in all your needs.
MIA Surfcamp is Australian-owned and operated, with your hosts always on site to make sure your experience is the
best possible. With our expert knowledge of the Playgrounds area and our unbeatable location, you are guaranteed
to get waves every day.
We also offer a range of alternative activities that include fishing, spearfishing volleyball, badminton, snorkeling,
and we are soon to have the Mentawai Islands’ only half pipe (mini-ramp). Alternatively, if you are interested in the
traditional Mentawai way of life, we can arrange guided jungle tours to see and meet traditional Mentawai
tribesmen and witness one of the world’s last remaining ancient cultures first-hand. If photography is your game,
then the breathtaking flora and fauna (not to mention the impeccable waves) which make these islands unique will
have your memory cards filling up in no time. We encourage boardriders of all kinds to come and share our slice of
paradise, as our extensive knowledge of the area means there are plenty of waves to go around for every type of
surfcraft.

Surf conditions in the area
Our location boasts four incredible waves directly in front of the camp that cater for every level of surfer. Straight
out the front – literally 20 metres from your accommodation – is Nipussi, one of the most consistent waves in the
whole Mentawai chain. It features a right-hander with an easy take-off, followed by an open-faced wall that is tailormade for nailing manoeuvres. Nipussi is a perfect warm-up for the hollower waves in the area, and is an absolute
treat for those with a little less experience surfing over coral reef. A mere stone’s throw up the reef from Nipussi
lies the legendary Piggy Banks, a short but intense right-hander breaking over a flat shallow shelf of reef, which is
favoured by bodyboarders and more experienced surfers. There won’t be any turning going on here – a standard
session would consist of take-off, pull-in, get spat out, paddle 30 seconds back to the take-off point, and repeat.
Then there is Bank Vaults, less than a five-minute walk up the beach from M.I.A Surfcamp. Being one of the premier
breaks in the whole Mentawai chain, this wave features regularly in surf media worldwide, and for good reason. In
the right conditions, the vault can dish out perfect bus-sized tubes of astounding power, offering up the potential
ride of your life for those willing to have a go. What is less well-known about Bank Vaults is that it’s also super fun
on smaller days too, offering clean high-performance walls and tubes on three different sections of the reef.
Lastly, we have a fun A-frame, which in the right conditions throws up a large-walled right-hander and a short steep
left-hander very close to shore.
All these waves can all be seen from the comfort of your accommodation.
On top of the tantalising “out-the-front options”, we also have a newly built fast boat that is able to take you to the
25 or so other high-quality surf breaks this area has to offer. With trip times ranging from 5 to 35 minutes, we can
get you to places like Kandui, Ebay, Rifles, A-Frames, Hideaways, Burgerworld and Pitstops, just to name a few.
Area description
Our elevated accommodation, built using the finest locally sourced hardwoods and skilled local craftsmen, is
positioned in a large coconut grove, with jungle to the rear and a pristine white sandy beach at your doorstep. The
superior location of M.I.A. Surfcamp means we have a massive area of the island all to ourselves, with our nearest
neighbour being a very small fishing village about a kilometre away. This means you can party hard every night, or
just chill and enjoy the sounds of the surrounding jungle with not another soul in sight.

On arrival day you need to meet your driver at your hotel lobby at 6am to catch the Mentawai Fast. You need to
arrive in Padang the day before your schedule trip with M.I.A Surfcamp so you don't miss the ferry. Same goes with
departure day, as you arrival back in Padang 6.30pm so best to stay overnight in a hotel before you catch any
flights home.
