If you’re a sports fan, this is the summer
event you can’t miss!
The Michigan Jewish Sports Foundation is a 501(c)(3) philanthropic
organization committed to honoring Jewish individuals connected to
the State of Michigan who have distinguished themselves in sports and
to foster Jewish identity through athletics.
Since its inception in 1984, thanks to the generosity of many and through
annual fundrasing initiatives, the Michigan Jewish Sports Foundation has
raised well over $1,000,000 to help fight cancer through grants to the
Weisberg Cancer Treatment Center, part of the Barbara Ann Karmanos
Cancer Institute; the Karmanos Cancer Institute’s Genetic Counseling
Service; the Beaumont Cancer Center; and other cancer charities.
In addition, the MJSF has supported the Jewish News High School Athletes
of the Year; student scholarships; the Jewish Community Center’s Camp
KAT (Kids All Together), Fame and Maccabi Games; Kids Kicking Cancer;
The Bear Hug Foundation; and the Michigan Jewish Sports Hall of Fame,
located in the West Bloomfield Jewish Community Center.

Shawn Green
Shawn Green is a two-time Major League All-Star who spent 15 big league
seasons with the Toronto Blue Jays (1993-99), Los Angeles Dodgers (200004), Arizona Diamondbacks (2005-06), and New York Mets (2006-07). At
the time of his retirement, he was one of only four active players with at least 300 home runs,
1,000 runs and RBIs, 400 doubles, a .280 batting average, and 150 stolen bases. Of Jewish major
leaguers, only Hank Greenberg, with 331 home runs and 1,276 RBIs, has more major league
home runs and RBIs than Shawn. Shawn opted to miss games on Yom Kippur, even when his
team was in the middle of a playoff race. Shawn was arguably the best Jewish baseball player
since Sandy Koufax. Shawn Green retired on February 28, 2008.
