Bob McGill, Greg Millen 4 BRIAN BURKE President & General Manager Brian Burke was named the President and General Manager of the Toronto Maple Leafs on November 29, 2008. The 54-year-old Burke became the 13th General Manager in Maple Leafs history and brings over 20 years of National Hockey League experience in various roles to the franchise. Since taking over the Maple Leafs, the club finished the 2008-09 regular season with a record of 27-26-7. Burke added many key players to the Maple Leafs roster during the summer of 2009 including goaltender Jonas Gustavsson; defencemen Francois Beauchemin, Mike Komisarek, and Garnet Exelby; as well as forwards Rickard Wallin and Colton Orr. Burke served as Executive Vice President and General Manager of the Anaheim Ducks from 2005 to 2008. In just over three seasons in Anaheim, Burke guided the Ducks to their first Stanley Cup (2007), first Pacific Division title (2007), and first-two 100+ point seasons (2006-07 & 2007-08). The Ducks also qualified for post-season contention in all three seasons, winning six-of-eight playoff series over that span. Burke received two outstanding honours in the summer of 2008. On June 6, he was chosen by USA Hockey as General Manager of the 2010 U.S. Olympic Hockey Team, and was named a recipient of the 2008 Lester Patrick Award for outstanding service to hockey in the United States on August 7. Burke was also the General Manager for Team USA at the 2009 World Championships. Burke was ranked No. 1 by The Hockey News in the magazineʼs Annual GM Rankings in March of 2008, and was a finalist for The Hockey News Executive of the Year in 2006. He was named the Sporting News Executive of the Year in 2001, and was a runner-up for the same award following the 2005-06 season. Burke joined the Ducks after a six-year stint (1998-2004) as President and General Manager of the Vancouver Canucks where he revitalized the team and the community en route to consecutive 100+ point seasons and the 2004 Northwest Division title. Under Burkeʼs leadership, the Canucks improved their point total in four consecutive years from 1999-2003. Since the 2000-01 season, Burkeʼs teams have qualified for the Stanley Cup playoffs seven times, playing in 13 total postseason series. In addition, those seven clubs recorded at least 90+ points, including four 100-point seasons. Born in Providence, Rhode Island and raised in Edina, Minnesota, Burke was named the Vice President and Director of Hockey Operations by the Vancouver Canucks in June of 1987. Burke left Vancouver to serve as General Manager of the Hartford Whalers for one season in 1992, before joining the NHL front office as Senior Vice President and Director of Hockey Operations in September of 1993. Some of his duties with the NHL included acting as chief disciplinarian by ruling on violations for on-ice player conduct, and working closely with Commissioner Gary Bettman on league direction and collective bargaining matters. After earning his Bachelor of Arts in History from Providence College in 1977, Burke signed with the Philadelphia Flyers prior to the 197778 season and won a Calder Cup Championship with the Flyersʼ American Hockey League affiliate the Maine Mariners. He then returned to school and graduated from Harvard Law in 1981. Burke practiced law in Boston for the next six years, representing professional hockey players until joining the Canucks in 1987. Brian resides with his wife Jennifer and has six children: Katie, Patrick, Brendan, Molly, Mairin and Gracie. 5 RON WILSON Head Coach Ron Wilson was named the 27th head coach in Toronto Maple Leafs history on June 10, 2008. In his first season in Toronto, the Maple Leafs compiled a record of 34-35-13. Wilson earned his 550th career NHL win as a head coach on April 1, 2009 when Toronto defeated the Philadelphia Flyers 3-2. The 54-year-old currently sits second in all-time wins among active NHL coaches with 552. Wilson previously held NHL head coaching duties with Anaheim, Washington and San Jose. Under Wilsonʼs guidance the San Jose Sharks were the only NHL team to have won at least one playoff round in each season from 2003-04 to 2007-08. In his four full seasons behind the Sharks bench, the team advanced to the Western Conference Final for the first time ever in 2004, and reached the Conference Semifinals in 2006, 2007 and 2008. His Sharks teams garnered two Pacific Division championships (2004 and 2008); twice finished second in their division, and twice posted the second-best point total in the conference. Between 2003-04 and 2007-08, no team appeared in more Stanley Cup playoff rounds (nine) other than the Detroit Red Wings (10). Wilsonʼs team had the third-most NHL playoff series victories (five) behind only Detroit (seven) and Anaheim (six) during that time. With a record of 206-134-45 (W-L-O/T) Wilson surpassed Darryl Sutter as the Sharksʼ all-time wins leader on March 1, 2008. He is also the teamʼs leader in post-season games coached with a 28-24 mark in 52 playoff games. Wilson coached the Washington Capitals from 1997 until 2002 where he compiled a record of 192-167-51. His tenure in the United Statesʼ capital was highlighted by the teamʼs only trip to the Stanley Cup Final in 1998. Prior to spending five seasons with the Capitals, Wilson had served as the first head coach of the expansion Mighty Ducks of Anaheim in 1993, and he led the team to the post-season for the very first time in 1996-97. In 13 NHL full seasons (minimum 82 games in a season) as head coach, Wilsonʼs teams have reached the post-season eight times; won four division titles; won one playoff conference title; reached at least 90 points seven times; reached at least 100 points four times; reached at least 40 wins seven times; and reached 50 wins once (51 in 2006-07, which was a Sharks record). Throughout his professional and amateur career, Wilson has enjoyed a long-standing relationship with USA Hockey. On April 6, 2009, Wilson was named USA Hockeyʼs head coach for both the 2009 World Championships and the 2010 Olympics. Wilson has now coached the U.S. National team three times at the World Championships (1994, 1996 & 2009), advancing to the semifinals in each tournament. He also led Team USA to the gold medal in 1996 at the inaugural World Cup of Hockey and he coached the team again at the 2004 tournament. Wilson also served as head coach for Team USA at the 1998 Nagano Winter Olympics. Wilson was a seventh-round selection of the Toronto Maple Leafs (132nd overall) in the 1975 NHL Amateur Draft. He made his NHL debut by playing in 13 games for Toronto in 1977-78, followed by 46 games in 1978-79 and five games in 1979-80. He recorded seven goals and 15 assists to go along with six penalty minutes in 64 total games with the blue and white. He recorded a goal and three assists in six career Maple Leafs playoff games. In 117 career NHL games as a player with Toronto and Minnesota, Wilson recorded 26 goals and 67 assists for 93 points. Wilson is one of 15 individuals that have both played for the Maple Leafs and then went on to coach at least one game for the Original Six franchise. Born in Windsor, Ontario, Ron is the son of Larry Wilson and the nephew of Johnny Wilson, both former players on Stanley Cup winning teams from Detroit. Ron and his wife Maureen currently live in Toronto. They have two daughters Lauren and Kristen, and a granddaughter Riley. 6 RON WILSON Head Coach RON WILSONʼS HEAD COACHING RECORD Regular Season Year Team Lge G W L T OTL PTS % 1993-94 Anaheim NHL 84 33 46 5 -- 71 0.423 United States WC 8 4 4 0 1994-95 Anaheim NHL 48 16 27 5 -- 37 0.385 1995-96 Anaheim NHL 82 35 39 8 -- 78 0.476 United States WCup 7 6 1 0 United States WC 8 5 3 0 1996-97 Anaheim NHL 82 36 33 13 -- 85 0.518 1997-98** Washington NHL 82 40 30 12 -- 92 0.561 United States Oly 4 1 3 0 1998-99 Washington NHL 82 31 45 6 -- 68 0.415 1999-00^ Washington NHL 82 44 24 12 2 102 0.622 2000-01^ Washington NHL 82 41 27 10 4 96 0.585 2001-02 Washington NHL 82 36 33 11 2 85 0.518 2002-03 San Jose NHL 57 19 25 7 6 51 0.447 2003-04^ San Jose NHL 82 43 21 12 6 104 0.634 United States WCup 5 2 3 0 2005-06 San Jose NHL 82 44 27 0 11 99 0.604 2006-07 San Jose NHL 82 51 26 0 5 107 0.652 2007-08^ San Jose NHL 82 49 23 0 10 108 0.659 2008-09 Toronto NHL 82 34 35 0 13 81 0.494 United States WC 9 4 3 0 2 NHL TOTALS 1173 552 481 101 59 1,264 0.539 ^Division Champion **Eastern Conference Playoff Champion 7 Playoffs G W L -- -- -- % -- --- --- -- --- -- 11 4 7 0.364 21 12 9 0.571 -- -5 1 6 2 -- --- -17 10 --4 0.200 4 0.333 ----7 0.588 11 11 13 -- 5 0.545 5 0.545 7 0.460 --- 6 6 6 -- 95 47 48 0.490 VENUE Practice September 12-25 MasterCard Centre for Hockey Excellence The MasterCard Centre for Hockey Excellence is the new Practice Facility for the Toronto Maple Leafs and Toronto Marlies.
