The words of A.W. Tozer (1897-1963), the great and godly 20th-century preacher, reflect on the nature of man and true service to God: 1790 1792 “The free man [of God] has never been a religious tyrant, nor has he sought to lord it over God’s heritage. It is fear and lack of self-assurance that has led men to try to crush others under their feet. These have had some interest to protect, some position to secure, so they have demanded subjection from their followers as a guarantee of their own safety. But the free man—never; he has nothing to protect, no ambition to pursue and no enemy to fear. For that reason he is completely careless of his standing among men. If they follow him, well and good; if not, he loses nothing that he holds dear; but whether he is accepted or rejected he will go on loving his people with sincere devotion. And only death can silence his tender intercession for them” (12-13). M ost students admit to having some concerns about roommates and residence hall life before arriving at college for the first time. The transition from living at home to living in a residence hall can seem overwhelming, even for those who 4 PCC UPDATE G WINTER 1999 Living in PCC’s residence halls have older siblings who have been to college before. Almost everyone has vivid memories of arriving, meeting new roommates, getting settled, and learning to adjust to different schedules, personalities, and expectations. PCC students understand those concerns. “Before I arrived at PCC, I was very nervous about sharing a room with three other girls,” recalls Christi Main (N.C.). “I prayed for good roommates the whole summer before my freshman year. It’s been a great experience. I underestimated the blessings I would receive from nightly prayer group, getting close to roommates, and simply making new friends.” “God has been extremely good to me by providing me with godly roommates Chris Littrell who are some of my closest friends,” shares Chris Littrell (Tex.). Eunice Thiessen (Canada) agrees: “It’s great to live with others that share a common relationship with Jesus Christ. A special bond develops between roommates, and that truly makes it a home away from home.” Elizabeth Turner (Kans.) is convinced that roommates’ different personalities and characteristics bring a unique atmosphere to the room. “By getting to know roommates, suitemates, prayer group members, and others on your hall, you’ll make friends that you might never meet otherwise,” she says. In addition to meeting new friends, many people find Christi Main that residence hall life affects them in ways they might not have anticipated. “Look at residence hall life as an opportunity to appreciate the finer things in life, like clip-on bed lamps and shower caddies,” grins Christi Main. “I’ve learned to be quieter in the morning, faster in the shower, and neater with my clothes.” Eunice Thiessen notes, “You learn to respect other people and the way they do things.” Andrew Doan (Colo.) has learned the importance of being flexible with Living and studying together builds friendships with space, things, and roommates. people. “Otherwise, you’ll get bent out of shape,” he points out. “Communication is the key to a Christ-centered, happy room,” observes Chris Conklin (Oreg.). Memories of residence hall life bring opportunities to reflect on how “all things work together for good to them that love God.” Rom. 8:28 “I wish I would have known how quickly the time would pass,” reflects senior Chris Littrell. “I would have done a better job making the most of it and adding to great memories.” Day rooms are favorite spots to gather on each floor in the women’s residence halls. Any student can try out for ensemble, regardless of their academic major. Ensemble directors look for musical ability, a cheerful smile, and a servant’s heart. Holly Falls (Ala.) claims the verse, “The Lord is my strength and song.” Ex. 15:2. Washing windows is one way ensemble members serve pastors and churches. “Our prayer was always that people would see weeks each summer and two the Lord in us,” she recalls. “The CC’s traveling music ensembles weeks in January. The groups Lord blessed during do a great deal more than just travel thousands of miles and every service. ” travel and sing in schools and churches. Their ministry extends well beyond songs, testimonies, and skits. Each group’s primary goal is not to entertain or to be entertained, but to serve God’s people. Ensemble members find that as they minister to other people, ministry takes place in their own lives. Matt Porter (Mich.) remembers a PCC ensemble coming to his church when he was in sixth grade, an event that influenced his choice to attend PCC. “I’ve learned to be flexible and adapt to last-minute changes,” he points out. “Our schedule is fast-paced and it never stops. It’s hard to find time for daily devotions, but it’s essential. I’ve found you can’t be an effective servant unless you’re spiritually prepared.” Heather Bulla (Colo.) echoes Matt’s sentiments. “My heart has to be clean in order for God to touch others through me,” she shares. Jim Hutchinson, chairman of the art department, says, “Some people feel that training in fundamentals inhibits self-expression. We believe that mastering the fundamentals allows our students to more freely express themselves.” Learning about God’s standard of excellence, art students work in a variety of artistic mediums to build a solid foundation of technical skills. “A successful artist combines God-given talent with a Biblical work ethic and constant practice,” notes Mr. Hutchinson. Individual instruction and critiques, art displays in the Communicative Arts Center gallery, and two internships allow art students to build a professional portfolio and gain practical job experience. In addition to undergraduate degrees in commercial art and graphic design, PCC also offers a Master of Arts degree in commercial art and a Master of Fine Arts degree in art. Brian Neher—PCC ’94 grad Award-winning artist “Art is unique because it leaves a record on the canvas, telling more about the artist than he or she realizes,” says professional portrait artist and PCC graduate Brian Neher (’94). “If you aren’t interested in what you do, it will show in your work.” Brian’s work reflects his lifelong interest in art and his commitment to make each piece his best. In 1996, he earned an honorable mention in Manhattan’s National Portrait Competition, one of 13 awards given among 3,500 entries. His award-winning entry was featured in the December ’96 issue of American Artist magazine. Brian and his wife Jacquie (Clark, ’95) currently live in Charlotte, N.C. From an early age, Brian took advantage of every opportunity to develop his artistic talent. “My grandmother had a tremendous influence on me,” he recalls. “She was a commercial artist who encouraged me to draw and allowed me to use some of her materials as motivation. I enjoyed watching her work at the easel and would often try to copy some of her drawings. She occasionally took me with her when delivering a job to a client. She gave me a glimpse into some aspects of a career in art.” Brian chose to attend PCC after visiting the campus during high school. “I was immediately drawn to the outstanding art facilities and to the type of artwork displayed during the faculty art show,” he states. “It was encouraging to see that PCC teaches solid, fundamental art principles.” Art faculty member Brian Jekel, an award-winning illustrator and member of the Society of Illustrators, introduced Brian Neher to renowned portrait painter Joe Bowler, and Brian credits much of his progress as an artist to his ongoing friendship and working relationship with both men. “Mr. Jekel continues to be as encouraging to me today as he was when I was a student,” Brian comments. “I feel very privileged to have been his student, and I hope to someday be able to give to others what Brian Jekel and Joe Bowler have given to me.” PCC UPDATE G WINTER 1999 11 A Brian Neher portrait Dr. Greg Mutsch interviews the Hortons regarding PCC’s past, present, and future.
