The boat radiates substance and character that began with the design by William Garden as a modern adaptation of the Pacific Northwest Halibut Schooners, known for their sea worthiness in Alaskan waters and the Bering Sea. The word Kintore is an ancient Scottish name meaning “safe haven.” The Garden design, as described in WoodenBoat magazine (No. 111), was enhanced by the original owner Jim Mitchell’s thoughtful accommodation redesign. His remarkable engineering skill is shown in his 30 sheets of design drawings detailing all aspects of the vessel. Bringing together the talent and extraordinary experience of these two designers resulted in a cruising boat that serves her crew well whether underway or anchored. Useful deck space, abundant storage, interior spaces that work and a dream galley are real features that provide functionality usually found in boats much larger than her size. Her ability to provide comfort and safety to a crew of two, and occasional guests, is excellent whether in coastal waters or offshore. Her construction in 1995 was approached as building a “hundred year boat” by a blue ribbon team in Maine using wooden boatbuilding methods of superior quality, as again written up in WoodenBoat magazine (no. 140). Months spent in careful selection of wood produced a hull with massive old growth longleaf yellow pine keel and keelsons, quarter sawn 1½” Atlantic white cedar planking that is copper rivet fastened to doubled white oak frames.
