Take the first well made track off to the left and down hill, which is unsigned (the main track carries straight on up hill). * Mortimer Forest: The geology of this area is of world significance. So much so that the famous 19th century geologist Sir Roderick Murchison used the name of Ludlow to define 440 million year old rocks as Ludlovian, a term that is now used worldwide. Very steep downhill stretch with a sharp right hand bend at the bottom. + , Turn right at the T-junction leading under the railway bridge. Then take the first left after the Bridge Pub into Corve Street. At the next T-junction turn left. Then, at the traffic lights by Tesco supermarket, turn left and return to the railway station. Soon after, pass Pearce Cycles on the left. 1 Four cycle rides around Ludlow and The Marches following quiet lanes and bridleways From 8–23 miles (13–37 km) www.visitsouthshropshire.co.uk 02/08/2010 12:30 About the cycle rides Explore the stunning scenery surrounding Ludlow on these four graded cycle routes, Route 1 being the easiest: Route 1 – Racecourse Rendezvous A relatively flat, easy ride, passing Ludlow Racecourse and returning to Ludlow on a traffic free route through Oakly Park. Route 2 – Orchard Ride Orchard Ride leads you through beautiful Teme Valley scenery to ‘The Town in the Orchard’, Tenbury Wells, with its Round Market and Spa Pump Rooms. Route 3 – Leintwardine Loops A choice of three loops along tranquil country lanes, taking in remote river valley scenery and including a traffic free trail through Mortimer Forest. Route 4 – Edge of the Clee An extremely rewarding ride, with a few challenging climbs, offering fantastic views of Clee Hill. Pump Rooms Tenbury had the ‘Wells’ added to its name to help promote the mineral water wells, found in the town in the 1840s. The mineral waters brought about the building in 1862 of the distinctive Tenbury Spa, or Pump Rooms, to be found behind the Crow Hotel. Turn right down a narrow tarmac path and use the underpass to cross the A49. On the other side of the A49 bear left after coming up from the underpass, and rejoin the minor road as it passes the church of St Mary the Virgin on the left. Take Care. 2 Take the first unsigned right, on the left hand bend just With local food producers still selling their wares in this local market town, Ludlow is the home of traditional food, produced the traditional way – from bread made with slow-rise dough, to hand-raised pork pies, and fresh fruit and vegetables, many of them from local farms. Little wonder that the town has become the UK’s first Cittaslow – or ‘slow city’. Ludlow is a town where the quality of life really matters. Route 1 7 Turn right immediately after passing the first white lights next to Tesco supermarket. Ludlow’s commercial heart is clustered around the market square, still a regular venue for local markets and town festivals. At the top end of the square sits Ludlow Castle. Once a major administrative centre where judges, lawyers and courtiers gathered to run the extensive tract of England and Wales known as the Marches, Ludlow Castle is now a Scheduled Ancient Monument. All four routes start from Ludlow railway station which has undercover cycle parking.
