HILLANDALE EMERGENCY DEPARTMENT NURSE
AWARDED FOR OUTSTANDING PATIENT CARE
A patient came into the DeKalb Medical
at Hillandale emergency department but
left before the lab work results came back.
Alarmed by the abnormal results, Ronnie
Gilbert, R.N., clocked out and went to the
patient’s home when he couldn’t reach him
by phone.
“I knew he was in danger and wanted to
convince him to go back to the hospital, or
go to any hospital for care,” says Gilbert, an
emergency department nurse since 1979.
Fortunately, the patient listened to Gilbert,
returning to the hospital where he was admitted and treated.
This is just one example of the reasons
Gilbert was recognized as an award recipient
Ronnie Gilbert, R.N.
in the 10th Annual Nursing Excellence Awards.
Sponsored by The Atlanta Journal Constitution and ajcjobs, the program honors the
hundreds of nurses nominated by Georgians who have had a nurse make a difference
in their lives. Ten nurses are selected to receive the award, which recognizes their effect
on patients’ and families’ lives.
Although he appreciates the honor, Gilbert explains that everything he does is just
part of his job. “Going to that patient’s home was just the right thing to do. I get to see the
difference I make in people’s lives and that is why I get up and go to work each day.”

CHEF DISCOVERS RECIPE FOR WEIGHT LOSS SUCCESS
When Kelvin Thornton went to the emergency
department because he didn’t feel well and was
experiencing unusual symptoms, he was shocked
to be told that his blood glucose levels were so
high he should have been in a diabetic coma.
Although genetics can play a part in the development of Type 2 diabetes, the 5-foot-8-inch-tall
Thornton also knew his weight — 356 pounds at
the time — was a factor in his illness.
The busy restaurant manager and catering
company owner chose surgical weight loss to
address his weight problem when insulin injections were the only way to control his diabetes.
“I have a phobia about needles, so I wanted to get
off insulin and reduce my high blood pressure,
too,” says Thornton. Two years later, the 42-yearold has lost more than 140 pounds, feels great
and is off insulin.
How do you manage eating well when
you are constantly tasting food?
“My wife gave me the nickname Sir Snacks-a-Lot,”
laughs Thornton. “I’ve always eaten small meals
every two hours or so rather than large meals
three times a day because my schedule is so hectic.
I do have to taste food to check flavor and seasoning. My tasting spoon holds about a teaspoon of
food and after tasting it while I’m cooking, I’m not
hungry for that food, but I do make sure my small
meals or snacks are healthy.”
Why have you been successful at losing
weight and keeping it off?
“I went to the educational session, talked to other
people who had the surgery and followed the
doctors’ instructions,” says Thornton. “I also had a
great supporter — my wife. She kept me on track
during recovery and has encouraged me even
when I was frustrated. We both knew my weight
loss was a life-changing experience and it would
require a team approach.”

WINNING
ARE YOU CONSIDERING
WEIGHT LOSS SURGERY?
Everyone knows or has heard about someone
who has enjoyed dramatic success with weight
loss surgery, and if weight is a health and lifestyle issue, many people have wondered if they
should also consider a surgical solution.
While it is an effective approach to lifelong
weight loss for obese adults, surgical weight loss
is not the right option for everyone. The decision
to have surgery should only be made after
careful consideration of the facts about weight
loss surgery and the lifestyle changes required
to maintain a healthy weight.
First, see if you might be a candidate for
the surgery. Are you:
 Unable to lose weight and keep it off with
nonsurgical methods?
 At least 18 years of age?
 100 pounds or more overweight, with a body
mass index (BMI) of 40 or above?
 Suffering from Type 2 diabetes, severe sleep
apnea or obesity-related heart disease and
have a BMI of 35 or above?
 Ready to commit to behavioral changes
and medical follow-up to maintain a
healthy weight?
If you answered “yes” to four of the five
questions above, you may be a candidate.
Next, you should learn as much as possible
about the surgical procedures, the risks and
your role in successful weight loss. Because
an individual’s weight loss following surgery
is dependent on a commitment to following
nutrition guidelines, fitness recommendations,
medical follow-up and a healthy lifestyle, it is
important to attend an educational session that
covers not only the procedures available, but all
components of the program that ensure success.
SURGICAL WEIGHT LOSS TECHNIQUES
Once the decision is made to undergo surgical
weight loss, there are four options available —
each with its own pros and cons — for patients
to discuss with a physician. All four procedures
are performed using minimally invasive surgical
techniques and all four restrict, or limit, food intake.
ROUX-EN-Y GASTRIC BYPASS
DESCRIPTION: A Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (RYGB)
restricts food intake by creating a small pouch
between the esophagus and stomach that sends
food directly from the small pouch to the small
intestine, bypassing the stomach, duodenum and
upper intestine.
PROS: Considered the gold standard for surgical
weight loss, this procedure produces the fastest
and easiest-to-sustain weight loss, with no need
to implant a device.
CONS: Because food bypasses segments of the
gastrointestinal system, the risks for nutritional
deficiencies are higher than other procedures,
requiring ongoing medical follow-up to monitor
for anemia or other malabsorption issues.
lower section of the intestine. The combination of
a smaller stomach and less absorption of fat leads
to weight loss.
PROS: The Loop DS produces greater weight loss
results and fewer gastrointestinal side effects than
other procedures.
CONS: The risk for nutritional deficiencies is present since malabsorption is part of the weight loss
strategy. Also, because the procedure is relatively
new, long-term results are still under investigation.
ADJUSTABLE GASTRIC BANDING
DESCRIPTION: The Lap-Band® System promotes
weight loss by limiting how much can be eaten,
which reduces appetite and slows digestion. An
adjustable band is placed at the top of the stomach
to create a pouch, which fills quickly and slows the
progress of food to the lower part of the stomach
to produce the feeling of “being full.”
PROS: There is no removal or surgical change to
the stomach, and there are no vitamin or mineral
deficiencies or other malabsorption issues.
CONS: There is less weight loss with the Lap-Band
than other procedures, and there is a risk that

DELIVERY
BABY-FRIENDLY DESIGNATION AWARDED TO DEKALB MEDICAL
DeKalb Medical was the first hospital in the state of Georgia to be recognized as Baby-Friendly. The Baby-Friendly
Hospital Initiative is a global initiative of the World Health Organization and the United Nations Children’s
Fund. The initiative’s goal is to improve health outcomes for mothers and babies through breastfeeding
and immediate skin-to-skin bonding.
There are more than 20,000 designated Baby-Friendly hospitals and birth centers worldwide but
only 227 active Baby-Friendly hospitals and birth centers in the United States. The “Baby-Friendly”
designation is awarded only after a rigorous on-site survey is completed. The award is maintained
by continuing to practice quality processes that focus on encouraging and supporting new mothers’ commitment to breastfeeding. Other important practices of Baby-Friendly hospitals include
encouraging skin-to-skin contact between mothers and newborns, and rooming in, which
encourages bonding and improves the newborn’s ability to breastfeed.
The Georgia Department of Public Health (DPH) developed a sister process,
the 5-STAR Hospital breastfeeding excellence recognition program. In this designation,
each star represents accomplishment of two of the Ten Steps. As the first
hospital in Georgia to achieve the Ten Steps, DeKalb Medical also
became the first 5-STAR Hospital in the state.
10 STEPS FOR SUCCESSFUL BABY-FRIENDLY BREASTFEEDING:
1. Have a written breastfeeding policy that is communicated to all staff.
2. Train all staff in the skills necessary to implement this policy.
3. Inform all pregnant women about the benefits and management of breastfeeding.
4. Help mothers initiate breastfeeding within one hour of birth.
5. Show mothers how to breastfeed and how to maintain lactation, even if they are separated
from their infants.
6. Give infants no food or drink other than breast
milk, unless medically indicated.
7. Practice rooming in — to allow mothers
and infants to remain together 24 hours a day.
8. Encourage breastfeeding on demand.
9. Give no pacifiers or artificial nipples to
breastfeeding infants.
10. Establish breastfeeding support groups
and refer mothers to them on discharge.

FOCUS
DEKALB MEDICAL AT HILLANDALE FOCUSES
ON SPECIFIC NEEDS OF ITS COMMUNITY
It was 10 years ago that DeKalb Medical at Hillandale hospital
opened its doors. Built at a cost of $65 million, Georgia’s first
all-digital facility joined the office buildings and outpatient
treatment centers that had been built on the property in 1994.
Our facility has seen tremendous growth since its inception
in 2005, says Kim Bentley, M.S., R.N., CCRN, vice president
and administrator, DeKalb Medical at Hillandale. “We are
continuously adding services, facilities and physicians to meet
the community’s need for healthcare,” she explains.
Growth for the hospital is carefully planned to meet the
specific needs of the Hillandale community, Bentley points out.
“We conduct an annual demographic and geographic assessment
to see where our patients live, top reasons for hospital admission
and most frequent reasons for emergency department visits,” she
says. Results of this evaluation are used to identify and develop
a strategy for existing services that should be expanded and new
services that should be added.
Expanded Services
Two years ago, a sickle cell disease program was created and has
continued to expand to better serve patients in the area. Although
the program began with emergency department protocols that
reflected the unique needs of sickle cell patients, it has expanded
to include an inpatient component as well, says Bentley.
New equipment and facilities will also improve access to services as well as patient care, says Bentley. “We’ve recently acquired
the radiation oncology center near the hospital, which is more
convenient for cancer patients undergoing radiation therapy who
live in our area,” she explains. “A second CT scanner was added
to our imaging service department in response to our increasing
volume of emergency department patients.”
The second CT is necessary to more efficiently evaluate
potential stroke patients, Bentley points out. “There are medications that can greatly diminish or eliminate long-term effects of
some strokes if they are administered within 4½ hours of the first

returned in early 2015 to set up Miller Grove Primary Care. “We
have good specialty coverage in the area, but people need more
primary care physicians who are close to home and close to the
hospital,” he says. “As we have more primary care physicians move
to this area, we’ll see even more specialists follow.” Additional
primary care physicians have also joined the DeKalb Medical
Physicians Group practices at Stonecrest and Flat Shoals.
The hospital’s focus on the community doesn’t stop with the
development of hospital services. An expanding community
outreach program now provides educational, medical and
diagnostic services to several partner organizations that include
senior care facilities.
Community outreach is an ongoing effort at the hospital, says
Bentley. “It provides an opportunity to provide services that help
people stay healthy, and stay out of the hospital. However, if someone needs a hospital, we are able to take great care of them.”

stroke center certification, so the additional CT scanner is one step
to meeting the high standards of care required for certification.”
Helping People Stay Healthy
The number and type of physicians providing service in the area
is also growing steadily. Specialists such as gastroenterologists and
vascular surgeons have been added to the medical staff to meet
the community’s needs. They join the specialists already providing
orthopedic, general surgery, breast surgery, gynecology, cardiology
and interventional radiology services.
“Vascular surgery was a particular focus for us due to the
number of people with peripheral vascular disease, high blood
pressure, diabetes, renal failure and cardiovascular disease,”
says Bentley. “This was a much-needed specialty.”

EXERCISE

CANCER PATIENTS FIGHT TREATMENT EFFECTS WITH EXERCISE
The connection between exercise and good health is obvious.
For cancer survivors, however,
exercise can play a critical role
in addressing the fatigue and
stress a person may experience
after treatment.
The American Cancer
Society, as well as the U.S.
Centers for Disease Control
and Prevention (CDC),
recommends that cancer
survivors get 150 minutes
of moderate-intensity or
75 minutes of vigorous-intensity
physical activity, along with at
least two strength training
sessions, each week. A recent
study, however, identifies barriers,
such as cost and awareness of
fitness options that are appropriate for cancer survivors, as
two reasons cancer survivors
don’t exercise regularly.1
The Return to Wellness
class offered by the DeKalb
Medical Cancer Center for
almost 15 years provides the
medically specific focus that
enhances the exercise experience for cancer survivors.
The class helps former patients
handle post-surgical changes
in their body as well as side
effects of cancer treatment such
as neuropathy, lymphedema,
joint pain and fatigue.
“We require a physician’s
approval for the person to exercise, and we require a physical
evaluation before beginning the
class,” explains Claudia Tinkle,
program manager. “The evaluation by certified staff makes
it possible for instructors to
modify exercises for individuals
so they are able to exercise without exacerbating any problems.”
Modifications might include
seated exercise, substituting
some exercises for others, or
reducing the amount of weight
used, explains Tinkle. “The
goal is to enable everyone
to exercise.”
The Cancer Center has
partnered with the Wellness
Center to offer the class as part
of a Wellness Center membership. It is open to all cancer

survivors, regardless of length of
survivorship, says Tinkle. “Even
if the cancer treatment was
20 years ago, some people still
have health issues that can be
positively impacted by exercise,”
she says. “We’ve seen tremendous improvement in people’s
strength, pain control, energy
levels and mental outlook.”
At this time, there is one
class offered in eight-week
sessions, but there are plans
to develop different levels of
the class to accommodate
people who are ready for a more
advanced level, says Tinkle. The
Wellness Center membership
also provides survivors access
to a full array of exercise classes,
as well as weight machines,
exercise equipment such as
treadmills, pool exercises,
trainers and the indoor track.
“This partnership makes it easy
for class members to continue
exercising in different ways.”
Because the class members
are all cancer survivors, there
is a comfort to being with
people who understand the
cancer treatment process and
are able to provide support and
encouragement. “We have some
members who have been with
us since the first class, and many
friendships have grown in this
group,” says Tinkle. The class
offers more than just exercise; it
offers social, psychological and
physical benefits. “For some
people, the class can be a support group in workout clothes.”

SUMMER
FITNESS TIPS
Summertime means it’s time to kick your winter
workout blues. Here are some tips to make the most
of your summer fitness routine:
1. Start a neighborhood walk club and sign up to
participate in a local 5K. There is no better way
to get to know your neighbors than sweating
together.
2. Choose early or late workout times to avoid the
most intense sun rays.
3. Hit the water. Waterskiing, swimming and paddle
boarding are great summertime activities.
4. Dress the part. Wear light, breathable fabrics that
absorb sweat.
5. Hydrate. Keep your water bottle nearby
while exercising and be on the lookout for
symptoms of dehydration such as nausea,
headaches or muscle cramps.

GIVING
back
DeKalb Medical Foundation
Thanks to the generosity of Foundation donors, DeKalb
Medical recently completed an 8,500-square-foot renovation of the Comprehensive Breast Center at the North
Decatur campus. The facility features state-of-the-art
upgrades, including six individual patient registration
areas, and new flooring, furniture, artwork, wall finishes
and light fixtures throughout the dressing rooms, restrooms and procedure rooms.

CONVENIENCE
BREAST CENTER RENOVATION EXTENDS A TRADITION OF EXCELLENCE
Having an annual mammogram can
create anxiety for many women and
this is just one of the reasons why
DeKalb Medical’s recent renovation
of the Comprehensive Breast Center
at North Decatur is likely to be a
welcome breath of fresh air for so
many patients. Designed by women,
for women, the Center blends
beautiful aesthetics with the best
available technologies for early
detection of cancer.
With a reputation for clinical excellence, DeKalb
Medical matches its commitment to quality care
with an emphasis on creating an environment of
comfort, convenience and compassion for our
patients. The Breast Center, which offers stateof-the-art screening and diagnostic services, has
recently undergone an 8,500-square-foot interior
upgrade that includes increased privacy during
patient registration, a new reception desk with
wheelchair accessibility, new flooring and soothing artwork.
The Center is designated as a Breast Imaging
Center of Excellence by the American College
of Radiology and accredited by the national
Accreditation Program for Breast Centers and
the Food and Drug Administration. “As one of
the busiest breast centers in the Atlanta area, our
staff is excited to provide this new, welcoming
environment to all of our patients,” says Cathy
Landerman, manager. “We have a large population who return to us year after year and we look
forward to hearing their feedback regarding the
improvements we have made.”
Each year, the Center provides more than
33,000 procedures to patients, including digital
mammography, breast ultrasounds, breast
biopsies and bone densitometry testing. State-ofthe-art digital mammography equipment offers
heightened accuracy compared to film mammography, so there is less need to obtain additional
images or schedule call-back appointments.
“The renovated center is beautiful,” according
to city of Decatur resident and returning patient
Nicki Salcedo. “It looks more like a hotel than
a hospital, and the staff treats you like an old
friend. They actually remembered me from my
mammogram two years ago when I checked in,
and the scheduling was so easy!”
The Breast Center focuses on saving lives
through precise imaging, early detection and
interpretation of results using advanced technology and the expertise of our board-certified
radiologists. It also provides specially trained
nurse navigators who expertly guide women
through the steps following an abnormal mammogram, and the healing and treatment process,
if cancer has been diagnosed.
Funds raised by the Foundation are integral
to the success of a variety of programs and services offered at DeKalb Medical. Since opening
in 1961, the health system has received excellent
financial support from the friends and neighbors
in our community. The Breast Center renovation
is just one example of the powerful difference
that generous support can make right here in
our community.

VOLUNTEERS RECOGNIZED DURING APPRECIATION WEEK
There is no sweeter sight than to see a bright smile from a
volunteer or that beautiful bouquet of flowers to brighten the
day during a stay in the hospital. Patients love DeKalb Medical’s
volunteers … and sometimes all it takes is just a simple smile
from a volunteer to lift their spirits so they heal a little faster.
Volunteers’ sweetness was returned in so many ways during
Volunteer Appreciation Week. M&M candies and a week filled
with sweet and savory events like an Auxiliary luncheon or two,
a special speaker and a delicious breakfast honored DeKalb
Medical’s marvelous volunteers. It was the hospitals’ time to
shower volunteers with a little sugar, and everyone had fun
sweetening their days!

RADIOLOGY STUDENTS AWARDED GRANTS
Each year, the DeKalb Medical Foundation awards
scholarships to two students — one junior and one
senior — attending DeKalb Medical’s School of Radiologic Technology. Members of PEACH, serving on the
Grants Allocation Task Force, review the applications and
determine which students will be selected. The DeKalb
Medical Foundation is proud to announce this year’s
scholarship recipients – junior Amy Balderas and senior
Jessica Royer.
(l-r) Amy Balderas and Jessica Royer were the
2015 recipients of DeKalb Medical Foundation’s
Radiology School scholarships.
PEACH GRANTS SUPPORT HOSPITAL DEPARTMENTS
Congratulations to the departments that were recipients of this year’s PEACH grants! Ten percent of PEACH dollars
raised each year support internal projects within the hospital, including the PEACH Grants and the Employee Disaster Relief Fund. Members of the Foundation Board of Trustees, Grants Allocation Task Force, review the applications
and select those projects they feel will make the greatest impact on our patients’ safety and treatment at DeKalb
Medical. A total of $16,485 was distributed to 12 departments across all three campuses.
