One Extraordinary Day!
September 29, 2015, had Jack Nicklaus
written all over it. Jack and Barbara Nicklaus
graced Governors Club with their presence
as we celebrated the 25th Anniversary of our
Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Course.
No name is more synonymous
with integrity and greatness in
golf than the name Jack Nicklaus,
and no single person has changed
the face of the sport more than
Jack Nicklaus–the player, the
designer, the philanthropist, and
the good-will ambassador.
Before starting his Q&A with Jack,
Golf Channel’s Gary Williams
recognized Barbara Nicklaus as
the 2015 winner of the Bob Jones
Award, the USGA’s highest honor.
The result was a standing ovation
from the packed room.

Governors Club has been awarded the prestigious Distinguished Emerald Club of the World
award, as determined by the annual Distinguished Clubs of the World award program
conducted by BoardRoom magazine, one of the most respected trade publications serving
private clubs.
“We’d like to congratulate Governors Club for earning Distinguished Emerald Club status,”
said John Fornaro, Publisher of BoardRoom magazine, “Special recognition also goes out
to Governors Club’s General Manger, Doug Shifflett as well as the Club’s Board of Directors,
its Department Heads, and entire staff for their efforts in providing an excellent member
experience.”
For fine private clubs that operate at the highest standards, BoardRoom magazine’s
Distinguished Clubs award program uses a club-specific rating system that recognizes the
club, its management, and its staff based on a proprietary criteria and evaluation process
that distills and measures a club’s Member Experience. As such, the rating system used by
Distinguished Clubs is different from any that has come before, and with it, the private club
industry now has the means to identify the top private clubs based on the most important
aspect: Member Experience.
As defined by Distinguished Clubs, “Member Experience” is that special combination of
“Qualities” that a private club provides its members. It is not just the quality of service,
or of the facilities, or of the product provided, it is also the quality of the staff and of the
management, as well as the overall club governance they deliver. The most important
quality, however, is the quality of the intangible. While difficult to measure, the latter
is comprised of those magic moments experienced, the members befriended, the
memorable events and famous tournaments attended, as well as the club traditions,
history, and heritage proudly recognized.

Boardroom magazine developed the Distinguished Clubs of the World award program
to recognize and share – with the private club industry as a whole – what it is that
Distinguished Clubs do differently, and to do so with the specific goal of improving the
Member Experience at every private club, and thereby helping to preserve the institution
of private clubs for many future generations.
BoardRoom magazine is the official publication of the Association of Private Club Directors
and is published in print and digital formats, and shipped to 27 countries worldwide.
BoardRoom magazine is now widely viewed as the most respected and influential
magazine in the private club industry.

Wendy and Russ Lynch
Full Members
Russ and Wendy moved to Governors Club at the end of
August from Wilton, CT, where they lived for 25 years and
where they raised their three daughters. Prior to Wilton, they
also lived in Chicago, Hong Kong, and Houston. Russ retired
in 2014 from a career in investment management. Wendy
taught both middle and high school mathematics and most
recently, had a business prepping students for the SAT and
ACT exams. Russ and Wendy were very active members of
their church as well as other community organizations. They
enjoy playing both tennis and golf and look forward to meeting new friends on the
tennis court/golf course.
Betsy and Michael Riggan
Sports Members
Betsy and Michael have been married for 45 years
having met in high school in South Texas. They
attended The University of Texas at Austin and
married after receiving their first degrees. Betsy
taught high school in Austin while Michael finished
his second degree. Michael has been in Specialty
Retailing for 30 years doing start ups at AutoZone and
Petco. More recently, he was CEO of Merchants Tire, Inc. before selling the company
and retiring. Betsy taught high school until their children were born. She received
her Masters Degree in Educational Ministries from Wheaton College. She recently
retired as the Director of Children’s Ministries (Director of Kids Quest) at McLean
Bible Church in Vienna, VA. Currently, they are both very involved in helping the ultra
poor in the Dominican Republic and working with orphanages in Ukraine and the
Congo. They are looking forward to spending time with their grandchildren that live
in Chapel Hill.

Bob was born and raised in New Jersey and is retired
from a 30 year career in Human Resources and
Operations. He came to NC in 1998 as Senior VP for
HR at Blue Cross & Blue Shield. Prior to joining BCBS,
Bob held senior executive positions at Travelers
Property & Casualty, Metra Health Companies, Advo,
Inc., and KFC Corp. Currently, Bob works parttime as an executive coach working
with C-suite executives to enhance personal and organizational performance.
A native of Philadelphia, Melissa spent her formative years in Greensboro, NC, and
recently retired from a career in university development including positions at UNC,
NC State and UNC-Greensboro, as well as statewide nonprofits including the March
of Dimes and the NC Advocates for Justice. Prior to her development career, Melissa
spent 20 years in corporate communications and PR with Burlington Ind.
Both Bob and Melissa look forward to exercising at the Wellness Center and enjoying
the many social opportunities offered by the Club. They will be joining as Sports
Members.

Discovering North Carolina
John Lawson’s Exploration of
Carolina – 1701
with Scott Huler
A century before Lewis and Clark, John Lawson made a journey. Lawson's journey
of 1700-1701 provided the first scientific descriptions of the Carolinas. His resulting
book cataloged everything from flora and fauna to the native populations and their
languages and practices. Considering "the Latitude and convenient Situation of
Carolina," he wrote, "our Reason would inform us, that such a place lay fairly to be a
delicious Country."
Scott Huler, author, journalist and Piedmont Laureate 2011, is recreating the 550
mile exploration journey of John Lawson who embarked from Charleston on Dec. 28,
1700. Lawson’s trek and his extensive notations of flora, fauna, geography and native
tribes predated Lewis & Clark by 103 years. His journey traveled through present-day
Charlotte and Hillsborough before reaching the coast at Pamlico Sound. This program
will share the history of the Carolinas which fostered this exploration as well as relating
his experiences in recreating the trek by canoe and foot.

Private Virtue and the Search for Public Values

The son of a minister, James A. Joseph grew up in Louisiana’s Cajun country, where
his parents taught him the value of education and the importance of serving
others. These lessons inspired him to follow a career path that came to include
working in senior executive or advisory positions for four United States Presidents
and with the legendary Nelson Mandela to build a new democracy in Southern
Africa. Saved for a Purpose is Joseph’s ethical autobiography, in which he shares his
moral philosophy and his insights on leadership.

1st Wednesday Evening: GCBC has a SOCIAL game which begins at
7 pm. Meeting for dinner at the Club is optional: 5:30 pm.

What a great Celebration of the first 25 years of this great
Club! When the Club opened in 1990, there were big plans
for this place. Those that were here on day one knew that
Governors Club would be something special. That being
said, there is only one thing that can truly make a club
special and that is the membership. It is the members of Governors Club that help
create a warm and embracing culture. This hospitality paired with a drive for innovation
continues to keep this Club as an industry leader, and is only made possible by your
support. As we wrap up our 25th Anniversary Celebration and look forward to the next
25 years, we this support only growing stronger.
Switching gears, I am often told by my wife that it is never too early to start holiday
shopping. I decided to take her advice and in turn offer the membership a friendly
reminder that we are open for business in the Golf Shop! This fall, you will see new
merchandise from favorites such as Fairway and Greene, Donald Ross Sportswear, and
EP Pro. You will also see new brands and items that I feel will make shopping for your
entire list much easier. Lifestyle pieces will be a big part of this. With the pride you
have in your Club, why limit showing off the logo to just golf apparel. Why not wear
the logo to the big game or on your morning walk! If there is a product you want, see
if we can order it for you. For example, many of you use Bushnell range finders on the
course. Do you have a stargazer or birdwatcher in the family? Did you know that you
can order other Bushnell products through us such as telescopes or binoculars? On this
equipment, just as golf equipment, we will price match to ensure that as a Governors
Club member, you always get the best deal possible. Happy shopping!
NC Amateur Championship

host the 56th North Carolina Amateur
Championship! This prestigious event
will take place June 16–19, 2016. We
will announce more details soon including opportunities to volunteer and truly
showcase the warm hospitality that
Governors Club is known for!

A Sterling Affair
Under Carolina blue skies, 118 golfers
participated in this year's Women's
Member Guest. This year's theme was
"A Silver Tee Party" in honor of the 25th
anniversary of the golf course.
Thursday was a practice round followed
by a grand cocktail party on the terrace
for players and their spouses. On Friday,
the fun continued on the golf course and
the day ended with a delicious lunch in
the beautifully decorated ball room. Many
members and their guests are already
looking forward to next year's event.

9th Annual BigTen ACC Charity Golf Challenge

A planning committee with ACC CoChairs Nort Schonfeld and Maureen Kaplan has
begun plotting a return to Victory vs. BigTen CoChairs Jim Stickford and Ann Marie
Cox. General Chair Lowell Hoffman supported by Director of Golf Thomas Brinson is
assisting in making this year's event even more memorable.

A liberal sprinkling of Mulligans is available: 1 for first-time players and another for
wearing the "garb" of a Conference school and can be augmented by purchase of
an additional 3. Once again, treasured bottles of wine will be awarded to the skilled
and the lucky for longest putts, straightest drives and closest to pin.
All are invited to play their choice of tee (Blue to Red) and either 9 or 18 Holes.
Choose your Conference or express "no preference" to be assigned to the hopefully
winning team - the BigTen leads the series 4 to 2.
A tempting array of Tickets to Duke, State and UNC basketball games will be offered
supplemented by enticing Carolina Performing Arts tickets including "Down Home
with Garrison Keillor".... all to benefit two designated charities.

Anyone that watched the US Open last month probably saw
points that ended on close calls (in or out). If a player felt that an incorrect call was
made, they were allowed to make up to 3 incorrect challenges per set. This challenge
system (known as “Harkeye”) began its use in 2006 and has now become an important
part of the way that matches are called.
STAFF
Similar to instant reply in football or basketball, Hawkeye is made up of many cameras
that simulate the flight and landing of every shot hit. The accuracy is nothing short of
amazing and has greatly helped the sport of tennis being decided by the better player
and not a bad line call.
