The Cougar Chronicle “Bridging the PATH of Excellence to Children” V O L U M E 6 , I S S U E 1 1 O C T O B E R DAT E S TO REMEMBER ……………..………. October 31 Early Dismissal 11:30 AM ……………………………… November 1 Report Card Issued ……………………………… November 5 Chick-Fil-A Night 5-8 PM ……………………………… We have experienced our first bout of cold weather this week. As we move into November and December, colder days will become the norm. We want all of our students to be warm. Therefore, we are partnering with Mount Horeb United Methodist Church and they are donating new coats for any Bridge Creek student whose family is struggling with financial hardship. If your child needs a coat for this winter, please contact Jeanie Sullivan, our school guidance counselor, to request a coat. Her email address is jsullivan@richland2.org or you may reach her by telephone at (803) 462-3900 ext. 32208. On a different note, our school’s lost and found is growing rapidly. With the cool mornings and warm afternoons, students are shedding jackets and leaving them behind. We will be placing lost and found items on the benches in the cafeteria every day next week. Please remind your child to look for any of his or her lost items when coming to lunch each day next week. Due to lack of storage for the lost and found items, next Friday, November 1st, we will be placing any remaining lost items in the donation box in our parking lot. Mrs. Kristen Eubanks DON’T FORGET There will be No Cougar Connections on Thursday, October 31 due to the half day dismissal. 2 0 1 3 News From the Nurse… From The Principal… . 2 5 , HEALTH SCREENING Bridge Creek Elementary annual Health Screening for students will be held on Tuesday, October 29th and Wednesday, October 30th. Did you know that Bridge Creek has many support personnel that can assist or direct you to assistance? If your child has a physical concern, our school nurse, Ms. Pyfrom, and her assistant, Ms. Butler, are here to assist. They screen for vision and hearing problems as well as provide care for the everyday “mishaps" that occur in school. If your child has more serious medical needs, our nursing staff develops health plans and provides referrals for in-school and outside assistance. If you are struggling to meet your child’s basic needs of food, shelter, or clothing, our school’s social worker, Ms. Inman, can lead you to community resources that may be helpful. Right now, an area church is providing coats for students in need. If you are unable to provide your child with a coat for the colder days ahead, please contact Ms. Sullivan at 462-3900, ext. 32208 or email her at jsullivan@richland2.org. Mrs. Jeanie Sullivan CLASS OF THE WEEK Mrs. Shivley’s Class Cougar Readers…Cougar Leaders A jump start for Non Reader Acknowledge the problem with your child: Talk about it, but in a positive way. Say things like: "Yes we have a problem, but the best thing to do, is to do something about it." Make a new start: Wipe the slate clean and say "Let's put the past aside. We're going to teach you to read in a very special way, that's just right for you." Make a commitment and stick to it. The approach must open the door for success: Take very small steps. it is essential for your child to experience success. Praise the smallest thing, one step at a time. Start with something the child is interested in to motivate them and make learning seem fun. Establish a routine: Set aside a special time for the both of you to sit down and focus on the child. Be open to their learning style - some children learn better when things are written down or drawn in pictures. Brief, frequent sessions will work best, especially at the start. Show them that you expect this to work: They will take cues from your confidence, so make sure they see you being just that. Celebrate each step forward with them. Use the child's strengths: Their own language, their interests, their current knowledge - it's familiar territory and far away from word lists, charts and books that label a person a non-reader. Use this, be committed and you will succeed. This information has been sourced from the book "Parents, Teachers, Partners" by Barry Dwyer. News from the Den….. Uniform/Spririt Wear on Sale...
