2015 Annual Report
ANNUAL REPORT 2015 Across the ages... Across the ages... Recent statistics confirm two important facts. First, domestic violence affects all ages. This year we sheltered victims as old as a 90-year-old great-grandmother and as young as a newborn infant. Second, our growing ranks of volunteers also span the decades. We’ve always welcomed retirees who read stories to our children, bake treats for our residents, assist with office jobs, and help with “handy-man” duties around our facility. But this year we saw a surge in the number of teens who made our agency the focus of their community service. As examples: A Daleville Girl Scout troop collected much needed winter coats for our kids, and a Fishers baseball team carried in and served a special Olive Garden dinner for our families. We were grateful to be among a group of organizations across the country showcased during the 20th anniversary observance of the Violence Against Women Act. Our work to establish safe havens at Ricker’s convenience stores was featured in a document distributed by Vice President Joe Biden’s office. This year our partnership with Ricker’s expanded beyond Madison and Tipton counties to include all Ricker stores in Hamilton County. Other highlights we can report: In April we launched the Hancock County Coalition against Domestic and Sexual Violence at an event attended and supported by Greenfield’s mayor, police chief, and the county prosecutor. We continued to offer training to law enforcement agencies in their handling of domestic violence cases. Whereas the national average of arrests made in such cases is 51 percent, Madison County’s average is holding at 73 percent. Our thanks go out to local officers for their outstanding work. When Butler Auto in Hamilton County learned that Alternatives had to “decommission” one of two vehicles used to transport victims, Rob Butler arranged for us to take delivery on a roomy new van. The Indiana Legislature passed two bills to ease the financial crunch of all domestic violence shelters and programs. Lawmakers increased the allocation for the Domestic Violence Prevention and Treatment fund and budgeted additional dollars to address sexual assault. Alternatives experienced key leadership changes this year with the departure of long-time board members Cindy Donnelly, Deanna Edwards, Scott Fadness, Lynn Gentry, Dr. Preetham Jetty, and Dr. Jennifer Nemunaitis-Keller. Before Deanna relocated to the West Coast, we honored her with our Liz McMahan Award in recognition of her more than two decades of service. We anticipate more changes ahead as Linda steps down as board president at the end of 2015 and Mary Jo retires in 2017 after 25 years as chief executive officer. On a positive note, efforts already are underway to ensure a seamless transition. We recently welcomed three additions to our board—Kristi Lemerick, Beatrice Ramey, and Diane Wilson. As we prepare for whatever the future brings, we are confident that Alternatives is well positioned to continue its advocacy to eradicate domestic and sexual violence through education, prevention, and intervention.
