MARCH 1994 FIFTH COLUMN Editorial They have a saying here in beautiful Southern California that we have four seasons: fire, quake, flood, and drought. With the riots and the expected plague oflocusts, no one can say that living here boring. The SoCal members I have talked to seemed to have had is only minor property damage. Most affected are the folks from Palmdale (J&T.Sharp, J. Weiherer, and W&S.Gadand) who are trapped behind a massive traffic jam due to a freeway shortage. People on the south side of the quake could probably make an excellent deal on some LA Kings tickets with Ward! We have been through a few earthquakes before, but we were only 25 miles from the epicenter of this 6.8; and it is the first time we could hear things breaking as the house shook. The newspaper reported acceleration measurements of 1.829 vertically and l.2g horizontally around town. Once you get over the initial effects, the most disturbing thing is the continual random aftershocks. We have a couple of friends who lost their homes, and we send our sympathy to everyone affected. We are now hoping that we are old enough so that for us, this was the Big One. Phoenix is only days away, and we all have high hopes for the event. As could have been expected, the organizers went to Reno for help; as the only continuous air racing series in the last 45 years, they represent success. Unfortunately, although Reno does many things right, maintaining good relations with competitors is not one of them. The racers have coordinated ten times more races than Reno at dozens of sites around the country and 30 years of working the same event cannot match that. Formula One has always tried to work with FORMULA FORUM - MARCH 1994 promoters and generally believes that for an event to be a success, the first guy to get out of the red should be the guy who finances the show. We want to work with the show as an organrzation - it's easier for everyone. But we need the show to work with us too. Reno Air Racing Association recently put out a press release announcing a withdrawal of support for the latest Unlimited organization, Air Racing Limited (ARL) and the formation of their owR non-profit organization to promote air races. They plan three or four strong events coordinated by a "race circuit governing body made up of representatives from each event", and pledge their support for Phoenix. Nowhere is any mention made of participation by any racing organrzation in this 'governing body'. The release also states that "the sanctioning ofthe events would be a function ofthe corporation". Clearly for any circuit to be a success, the support ofthe racing classes is needed. As ARU and Reno should know, sanction is a function of racinglparticipant organtzations NOT promoters. In the case of air racing this means the classes; or in multiclass events, ARCUS which is in turn a part of NAA, the US sport aviation organization and the FAI in Paris, the world body. Phoenix is working with our leadership to resolve issues, and they are changing things where they have been misled. When they work with all ofus at the site and watch Ward and Tom coordinate our show on the road, I have no doubt that next year will be much easier for everyone. If IFl and the other racing classes can be $een as part of the AARLP entertainment team, the'94 event will be great and'95 even more successful. SECRETARIAL STUFF Dan Bond Long Range Planning # 1 in press relations: "He who toots not his Before we cafl do any real planning, we must decide where we want to go. What we need is a Mission Statement. The IFl Articles of incorporation give us a good start: The purpose organization to: ,ADVANCE PROMOTE THE OF SCIENCE own hom, so shall it not be tooted". of this is AND AND SPORT INTERNATIONAL FORMULA I AIR RACING". Any actions taken bythe board ofdirectors must by law address this purpose. This conceptshould be on the first page of the rule boolq and distibuted to every member, not hidden away in the Articles of Incorporation. This will go a long way to stop the active discouragement ofinnovation that our class has become famous far. Awareness TV is often held up a.s an "if only...' in plaruring the future of International Formula 1. "If only we could get on TV, we could..." Unfortunately, there is no "if only" in the real world. We can't waste our time chasing TV if rve don't have a product. How much magazine coverage did we get from Reno? Aside from Jack Cox's coverage, oru exposue from the "Premier Air Racing Evenf'was dismal. This is in spite of the fact that several of the races srere some of the mcst exciting in recent memory. Generating exposure takes work. In the last year I have sent out over 200 press releases. To make the leap from release to exposrue" each of these releases has to be followed up by an avetage of 2 phone calls. A press release without a follow up call is a waste of time & money. I assumed (incorrecfly) that the media interest generated by the Aeroshell Speed Dash would carry over to Reno. Rule Talk to your local mediq now. Local papers and TV can do wonders for your scrapbook. Askyour local EAA chapter if you can talk to trem about racing at a mont}ly meeting. Ask yoru local Euick dealer if you can display your airplane in their showroom. Talk to any tuade publications you get. Ag Pilot International rarL an outstanding story on Dusty Dowd in Septernber. The Alexander Aeroplane News ran a story 0n Scott Crandlemire and his Rookie of the Year award. Almost every one of you has a connection somewhere, and a story to tell. If you do get some press, let me know. We need a scrapbook too. The public isn't as interested in auto racing as it is in the personalities of the drivers. The probably true in all sports. You often root for a team based on criteria other than their skill or technique. Why else would people support Houston football & baseball same is teams? Other Things For some reason, some people seem to like thingstlreway they are (were). I'm sor4r, but the days of jumping in a stock racer and firirming the Gold race are gone. Come to think of it, when was the last time that somebody won the Gold race without expending a lot of effort? To serve the needs ofthe entry level racer we must develop a "Sportsman" class. Racers in ttris class would compete for a limited amorurt of prize money, but would have additional racesthatme not open to the "Championship" class racers. A 6 plane field could be offered T,ORIIIT]LATORUM . MARCH 1994 PRESIDENT'S PAGE Bruce Bohannon RACERS, START YOUR ENGINES Off and Running! With our first event just around the corner, IFI is looking forward to a of racing. The Phoenix 500 promises to be the greatest first time air racing good year event in history. I really appreciate the support that IFI members have been showing for this event as it has been a rough road for the organizers. We need to make a good showing and help the Phoenix guys any way possible as they have taken on a tremendous gamble and their success is our success. We need more events of this caliber to further the cause of air racing and the surest way for that to happen is for Pat and Scott to be successful. Along the same lines, I would like to thank Shell Oil Company for supporting Formula One for 1994. As you all probably know, Shell is providing some cash to offset the entry fees at Phoenix. All Formula One entrants sent in $250.00 and will receive a check for $200.00 on arrival in PFD( Shell is paying the $200.00 even though it will come from the PFD( guys. Shell will also provide Aeroshell Oil 15W50 (2 cases per airplane) for each entrant that flies the Shell logos and uses their product in their racers. They have stipulated that they may sample oil to check for compliance. I urge all members that are not currently supported by other oil companies to take part in this program. We need to show solidarrty and our appreciation for the help Shell is giving us. Watch for Linda Elliott's write up on our Team Competition. There will be substantial prizes for the most improved teams judged on a variety of criteria. If anyone has any questions, input, or can help, please contact FOR]VIULAFORUM - MARCH 1994 Linda. (See page 13 Ed.) Dan has some interesting ideas on getting everyone involved in the education of Joe Public about who we are and what it is that we do. As an example, I have contacted a new "ALL NEWS" TV station in Houston and informed them of our spoft, local racers and they want to do a story on us. It wasn't diffrcult at all and the extra exposure for Formula One will benefit us all in the long run. Try to catch us in Phoenix! Secretarial Stuff Bruce Cont shows for $6,000. These 6 planes could race 2 or 3 times a day, giving the pilots much more racing experience than could be obtained in an open event. PART I Since we are all the products of our own backgrounds, I suppose it's only natural that we each tend to view beauty, even that of an airplane in a different light. Those of my advancing years and former flying adventures will have to be forgiven for our unrepentant expressed admiration of particularly attractive planes, like their sea-going counterparts, in terms of the feminine gender. This correlation to female beauty by many, certainly by former military pilots may well stem from the long held service practice of pilots naming planes after females in their Iives. I dunno'. But aircraft beauty like all beauty is a subjective thing, and a new design will only occasionally generate our admiration in an immediate esthetic sense, Far too often, acceptance, like an antelope crocodile stream is hesitant. our at the Not so, though, for a small group of new in 49 and showed up to year's Goodyear Races in qualify at that Cleveland. There was #3T, KISTLER SPECIAL; #39, DEERFLY; #34, ESTRELLITA; and #16, SHOESTRING. (Note: Although Estrellita actually qualified at the'48 Miami meet, she lost a prop in her first race, dropped from sight and didn't appear again until'49). designs that appeared These four new models were distinctive and appealing additions to the midget air racing scene and commanded unusual interest. But of the four, SHOESTRING stood out... an attractive chartreuse lady of unusually symmetrical lines generating more appeal than seemed warranted by Bob Downey's 7th place finish with her in the Finals at 171.359. This "back in-the-pack" finish, however, was not to become commonplace, At the '5O Miami meet four months later she was to qualiff 3rd of 18, win her first heat race, place 3rd in the Finals, then win her next race meets including the '51 four national championship at Detroit. Following a period of modest success and a five year recess from racing SHOESTRING returned in'65 to commence an incomparable 16 year reign atop this racing class... a period that embraoed 43 race wins including an additional 9 national championships. She was not only pleasing to the eye, she was swift. Shoestring was designed in early '48 by Rodney Kreimendahl who assigned it the model designation "Mercury Air Special". Kreimendahl then assisted the Ast brothers, Carl and Vincent, in building the prototype which they completed in early'49 in sufficient time for Doumey to race it at Cleveland in September... racing with the name "SHOESTRING" That name was to become so synonymous with the design despite Kreimendahl's protestations however, that the model designation was similarly changed to simplify matters and eliminate confusion. John Anderson of Miami bought the deteriorated SHOESTRING in'63 and, with Bob Harmon's help, restored it and arranged for veteran John Paul lones to fly it for him in '65, then sold the plane. Ray Cote's long triumphant partnership with the beautiful SHOESTRING thus began in'66 and lasted until her retirement to the San Diego air museum late in'81. FORMULA FORUM - MARCH 1994 During Anderson's period of ownership, he maintained it in a hangar at Opa Locka airport adjacent to a Piper Aircraft Company office where engineer Landis Ketner was ernployed. Ketner, an admirer of the plane's clean aerodynamic lines, upor leaming that I{reimendatrl had died and that no plans for the craft were in existence, agreed to do an engineedngshrdy of it in otder that it could be restored should it be damaged or deshoyed while racing. From this study emerged a detailed set of constuction plans in 1969, and itwasfrom them that subsequent Shoestings were built. Ketrersoldapproximately 20 sets ofplans for these Shoeshings which he designated as model K-10s, but he estimates that no more than perhaps l0 or 12 planes were actually completed... 6 ofthem were ultimatelyto race in the US and 2 in Europe. This could mean a full field which will encourage the promoters to do better for us next year. Remember that you should have your dues paid and your aeroplane registered with IFl if you wish to race. Our committee will consist of Frank Ronco, Dan Glbert, and Jim Stevenson. The Operations officials for the race will be under Ward Garland and consist of Scott Garland, Jim Stevenson, JeffGunn and Frank Benko. Dave Morss will be the pilot evaluator, unless of course he actually enters. Tow money will be paid at the rate of 10 cents per mile based on the mileage in my Rand McNally road atlas. This means $160 for the FORMULAFORUM - MARCH 1994 Bay area people, $230 for Hooooston, $190 for Oklahoma City etc. Now! How to get there:- Mesa is a suburb east of Phoenix and the airfield, Williams airport, is south of route 60, (also known as 360) the Superstition Highway, on Power Road. The entrance to use initially is at the north west corner of the facility. Find hanger number 25 and park your vehicles and trailers behind it and put the birds in it. I will be there on Sunday so that hopefully everything will be sorted by the time most people get in. Those ofyou that booked your hotel through the IFI number will get a map of how to get there with your written confirmation. The hotel is near Phoenix. International Airport. The entrants should get a package containing l0 arm bands, 2 car passes and some, as yet undetermined, number of banquet tickets. I would appreciate that if you have excess to your needs of any of these that you contact me so that I can redistribute the excess. The prize money breakdown :- is a little different than the normal system in that we are folding the heat money into the qualifiing payout. Qualifying speed will be added to the two heat speeds to determine who gets the money; for instance, if your quahfying speed is 207mph and your two heat speeds are 212 and 209mph you have a qualifying payout based upon the total i.e.628. If you do not If finish your heat you score a zero for you do not start your heat you score a zero and also lose $150, which will be paid to the alternate that takes your place. it. Your position in the finals is determined by your last heat speed in the usual manner. This program is designed to promote team unity and appeal to and put to use the creative skills of team members for recognition and awards. The program also includes the participation of the Race Fans which will promote public relations and awareness and make IFl the most exciting and popular race class. The new program is simply, Race Team Competition. Teams will compete in 5 categories: (l) Best looking airplane; (2) Best looking team, (3) Best looking pit area; (4) Public relations and (5) Sportsmanship. will be selected by votes. Each team will cast one vote per category and the race fans will cast the balance for their favorites. Votes will be tabulated after each race and results published in the Formula Forum. Awards will be given at the end of the race Winners season in order to allow for the last race of the year. As awards are secured from sponsors, they will be published in the newsletter. Please note that we are seeking major awards that would be beneficial to any team. The goal is to give every team a chance for recognition and rewards for participation regardless of where they may place. To help support this program, IFl will set up an introduction/information table at the entrance to the hangar. With the help of the Women's Wing and volunteers from each teanr, the table can be manned at all times and pass out information on IFl. Specification sheets with data on each plane and crew, and ballots for voting will be available for those fans who wish to participate. This will help to educate the public on our class and to become FORMULA FORUM . MARCH 1994 familiar with the teams. IFI will also furnish signage for each race team to add uniformity to the group and make each team identifiable. TIPS FOR TEAM COMPETITION 1. Creative and unique does not have to be expensive. 2. Take time to answer questions and visit with fans. You never know who you may be talking to....A possible sponsor? 3. Souvenirs are great fun and essential for fans. How about the pilots spending some time at the information table autographing programs, pictures, tee-shirts or whatever? 4. Competition is supposed to be healthy! So let's keep the drunken brawls down to a minimum and the dancirtg girls off of the wings. 5. The keyto winning is Team Effort. We are all winning teams and together we can make IFl the winning team in the race circuit. 6. Most of a11......... HAVE FLINI In III to begin the competition at the Phoenix 500, all teams need to forward their specs for the information sheets ASAP. Most of the information is on the qntry form for Phoenix or Reno, so you can simply send a copy of that form and any additional data on the plang pilot and crew that you may have or wish to have included. Please forward this information to Linda Elliott, 2501 Hardy Road, Grand Prairie, TX 75051 or fax it to order 2141264-9800. IFl Pres Bruce Bohannon is planning an assault on the time-to-climb records for Class C-l.A at the EAA Sun-n-Fun fly-in April 1016. Current records are 3min 48sec to 3000m and 15min 17sec to 6000m, held by a Pitts and RV-3 respectively. No record exists for 9000m for some reason. Lyle Shelton (Rare Bear) did 3000m in lmin 31sec in class C-l. It is interesting that racing aircraft do well in climb and altitude as well as speed. Included in this year's list of distinguished inductees into the Motorsports Hall of Fame of America in Detroit is the winningest pilot in Fl history Bill Fatck In a career spanning almost 40 years Willy won 56 Fl races. Other nominees include some of the biggest names in racing- Bobby lJnser, Cale Yarborough, Bob Glidden, Jim Hall, Bernie Little, Sir Malcolm Campbell and Eddie Rickenbacker and Chris Economaki. The ceremony will be held June 8 at the historic State Theater in downtown Detroit. We hope chip-ofltheblock nephew Ilusty Dowd will be able to New for Phoenix is Linda Elliott's offer of signage for each team.
