Connecticut Odyssey of the Mind (CTOM) turns 35 this year. I am so proud to be part of an organization
that is providing creative problem solving opportunities for public, private and home schooled students
from across Connecticut for so many years.
This year there are 158 teams participating at 16 different competition sites. To run a successful
competition an army of volunteers is needed along with weeks of planning and coordination.
I would like to thank the administrators and staff of Bristol Eastern High School and Stafford School
for their commitment to the Odyssey of the Mind program and for providing us with this awesome
competition space.
I would also like to recognize the many volunteers who help support our program during the year.
Approximately 500+ volunteer coaches, judges, volunteers, and town coordinators work hard to run
events during the year to ensure a successful competition.
A very special thank you to the dedicated CTOM Board Members and Problem Captains who contribute
so much time and talent to keep the focus on inspiring creativity in the children of Connecticut.

CTOM, Inc. is a 501 (c) (3) tax exempt non-profit organization which allows us to explore grants and
sponsorships from corporate and private donors. This year we were fortunate to receive support from
the General Electric Company, Nestlé Waters North America, and the 3M Company. Printing services

Odyssey of the Mind Problem Synopses 2016
All problems have an 8-minute time limit.
Problem 1: No-Cycle Recycle
Divisions I, II, & III — Cost Limit: $145 USD — Problem Captain: Bob Zinser
Teams will build, ride on, and drive a no-cycle, recycling vehicle. It will pick up discarded items, adapt
them in some way, and then deliver them to places to be re-used. The vehicle must travel without
pedaling for propulsion. In addition, the driver will have an assistant worker riding on the vehicle that
will help process the trash items being repurposed. They will make an unplanned stop along the way
to perform a random act of kindness.
Problem 2: Something Fishy
Divisions I, II, III & IV — Cost Limit: $145 USD — Problem Captain: John Scheuermann
Teams will design and operate a technical solution that simulates multiple styles of fishing. A Fisher
Character will work from a designated area to “catch” three different objects that are outside of that
area. The catch will be on the move and will include something expected, something unexpected,
and a new discovery. The performance will also include a change of weather and a humorous
character that portrays a potential catch and avoids being caught by the Fisher.
Problem 3: Classics... Aesop Gone Viral
Divisions I, II, III & IV — Cost Limit: $125 USD — Problem Captain: Betsy Wellington
Teams will create and present an original performance about a fable gone “viral.” The problem will
include a list of fables attributed to Aesop. Teams will select one and portray it, and its moral, as
going viral – that is, being shared throughout the community and beyond. The performance will be
set in a past era and include a narrator character, an artistic representation of the fable’s moral, and a
character that makes a wrong conclusion about the moral and is corrected.
Problem 4: Stack Attack!
Divisions I, II, III & IV — Cost Limit: $145 USD — Problem Captain: Amy Zinser
This problem requires teams to design, build, and test a structure, made only of balsa wood and glue
that will balance and support as much weight as possible – twice. During weight-placement, teams
can “Attack the Stack” where they will remove all of the weights except for the bottom one and the
crusher board. Teams will also receive score for removing weights! After Attacking the Stack, the
weight placement process can be repeated to add to the total weight held. Teams will incorporate
weight-placement, repetition, and Attacking a Stack into the theme of the performance.
Problem 5: Furs, Fins, Feathers & Friends
Divisions I, II, III & IV — Cost Limit: $125 USD — Problem Captain: John Pullan
The team’s problem is to create and present a humorous performance depicting problem solving
from the perspective of three different animals. The animals will help a stranger, help each other, and
solve a problem that threatens the survival of all animals. During the performance, the animals will
sing and dance. They will also show curiosity, sympathy, frustration, and joy.
Primary: Stir the Pot
Grades K-2 — Cost Limit: $125 USD — Problem Captain: Debi Crotty
Teams will create and present a humorous performance about an object that comes to life when
touched by an item that turns out to be magical. While it is alive, the animated object will encounter
three other objects that will result in a dramatic change of behavior. There will be a narrator
character that explains what is happening and a character that becomes friends with the object. The
performance will also include a team-created poem, song, or dance.

The Primary Division of Odyssey of the Mind gives students in kindergarten through
second grade the opportunity to begin experiencing the components of Odyssey in
a non-competitive manner. No scoring takes place. While their long-term problem is
designed specifically with their age range (5-8) in mind, they still experience rigorous
challenges inviting creative thinking, problem solving, brain storming and team

Jill Riggles Award
The Jill Riggles Award
for Excellence in
Spontaneous
Jill Riggles, a former coach, assistant problem captain
and long-serving Board of Directors member, passed
away from cancer in 2011. Jill was a gifted, dynamic,
dedicated individual who exemplified the CTOM ideals
to serve Connecticut youth. Her special talents for
artistic expression, particularly in music, theater and
communication,
combined with her
passion for the arts and
exuberance for CTOM,
were infectious and
inspirational.
In Jill’s honor the
CTOM Board has created
the Riggles Award for Excellence in Spontaneous. This
award will be given to teams with the highest spontaneous
scores at our yearly tournament.

Homestay Program
The Homestay Program benefits both international teams that
travel to World Finals and Connecticut teams, especially those
that do not attend Worlds.
The concept is simple –
international teams stay a few
days after World Finals with
Connecticut Odyssey host
families who provide lodging
and food and introduce their
guests to American life. In
return, host families are enriched by learning about a different
culture and make lasting international friendships.

We’d love to include you!
Could I be a Coach?
Yes, you can do it! Volunteer coaches are the foundation of the
Odyssey program. They are often parents, teachers, grandparents or
community members. Coaching is rewarding, fun, and best of all it
gives more kids the opportunity to be involved in all the wonderful,
productive creativity you saw on display today. Coaches generally meet
weekly with teams of 5-7 children to supervise them and stimulate
rather than influence their thinking. No “outside assistance” is allowed
as the team works together to solve its chosen problem.
You won’t be alone. CTOM offers coach training in the fall and early
winter. We also offer Odyssey Day, a skills training day for kids and
coaches, with topics such as balsa wood building, improvisation, script
writing, making things work, and junk-to-treasure. Our website www.
ctom.org and the national website www.odysseyofthemind.com,
are loaded with hints and resources to help you. Several school districts
hold spontaneous scrimmages you can attend to help your team
practice on-the-spot verbal and hands-on problem solving skills.
