45th Annual Fall Meeting
The Lodge at Ventana Canyon, Tucson, AZ
November 4-10, 2012
The Lodge at Ventana Canyon sits against the
backdrop of the Santa Catalina Mountains. Nestled
within this spectacular setting is a private country
club and Lodge with just 50 suites and 36 holes of
golf. Winding through the canyons and arroyos of
this 600-acre desert preserve are Tom Fazio's two 18
hole championship courses (Mountain and Canyon),
which have won numerous awards as the best in the
country. The Lodge has been a prestigious AAA
Four Diamond property for 14 consecutive years, and
our many awards reflect our commitment to the highest standards in service excellence. The Lodge reflects the
spirit of warmth and comfort cherished by seasoned travelers.
A MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT
The meeting at Kiawah Island Golf Resort in South Carolina was a great week with new members, good friends
and families. The resort was a beautiful setting to start off the USDTA’s 45th Anniversary this year. The
weather was suspect in the beginning of the week, but the sun broke through and everyone had some good fun
tennis throughout the week. The speakers were the best line up of speakers we had in one week. Everyone was
able to take home little pearls of information. There was plenty of participation from the group at each lecture,
which kept everyone awake!
Our next USDTA meeting will be held November 4-10, 2012 at the Lodge at Ventana Canyon in Tucson, AZ.
There will be a continuation of the 45th year celebrations. Past Presidents will be honored at the Awards
Dinner, a special star gazing party, lots of great tennis, food, and of course, great speakers. Please be on the
lookout for an early registration discount.
I can’t wait to see you all in Arizona and enjoy the same camaraderie we had in South Carolina.
As always, if you have questions or comments, please feel free to contact me or the Executive Director at
www.dentaltennis.org.
Regards,
John Cross, D.D.S.

Kiawah Island Golf Resort at a glance
Driving into Kiawah Island is beautiful with lush trees, golf courses and alligators! The week started out with rain on
Sunday, so there was no tennis mixer. However, everyone still gathered at the pro shop to meet each other and say hello
to friends. The week went well with the lectures in the morning. Great speakers throughout the week! The rest of the
week was dry and tennis was played every day! The wind played havoc with several shots, but most everyone had their
fair share of tennis for the week.
Our new members were introduced at the Welcome Dinner:
Teresa Adams
Ellicott City, MD
Meino Mast
Newfoundland, Canada
Mike and Cindy Wieczorek
Bear, DE
If bikes were rented, one could bike on the packed sanded beach or bike paths throughout the resort. Beautiful homes and
water could be seen for miles. At the end was the Ocean Course Clubhouse where the PGA Championships will be held
later this year. There are plenty of bike trails to explore the island and many chances to see alligators sunning themselves
on the golf courses. The week ended with the Awards Dinner at the Ocean Course Clubhouse where we could see players
finishing (or trying to finish) the 18th hole. Everyone cheered when a guy finally got out of the sandtrap! The food was
fantastic, the sunset gorgeous, and, as always, the people memorable. With a great line up of speakers, and a beautiful
venue, the week could not have been better! Everyone had a great time and we will be back to Kiawah again!

Kiawah Island Lecture Review
Dr. Gianni gave a talk on
current dental technology
with a focus on chair side
scanners.
Patients have
access
to
so
much
information, many are
holding their dentist to a
higher standard of technology. If done right, proper
implementation increases efficiency and patients
perception of quality dentistry. Also, discussed lasers,
digital imaging, lab material, and case studies. Special
thanks to Kaines labs and Sirona. (J. Cross)
Dr. Tom Dudney, a Cosmetic
Restorative practicioner from
Alabama and California is
associated with Aesthetic
Advantage Programs and The
Northern California Institute
of Cosmetic Dentistry. He
discussed definitions, diagnosis and treatment of cases
involving dental wear of all types. Dr. Dudney presented
several complex restorative cases with discussion of the
causes, treatment goals and final treatment plans. Dr.
Dudney finished with a case of autotransplantation in the
case of an eleven year old girl suffering from traumatic
loss of her maxillary front teeth. (A. Biggs)
Renee Marks R.D.H.,
M.S. presented "Dental
Transitions are Not
Just for Retirement
Anymore". Ms. Marks,
who has worked with
many dental practices
and guided them in
clinical and practice management strategies, spent the
morning describing how she analyzes a practice and
what options she sees feasible for practice growth and
doctor/owner retirement. What was most impressive
about Ms. Marks is that while she gave ballpark figures;
erg. needing approximately 750 extra patients for an
associate and planning on 1 hygiene day for every 200
active patients, etc., it became obvious from the "stories"
she told that she listens well in order to help doctors get
to where they want to go on their "flight plan". While
teaching doctors how to meet their goals she recognizes
the uniqueness of each doctor's situation and integrates
that with the doctor's personality to achieve true
success. The lecture was very well presented and for
those USDTA members not present I would say if they
are considering getting advice on practice building or on
some other aspect of retiring, Ms. Marks would be an
excellent resource. (M. Belby)
In a reprise from Amelia
Island last year George
Warga
continued
his
lecture on occlusion. From
the start of the lecture Dr.
Warga helped is "unlearn"
some concepts we were
taught years ago in dental school and subsequent
continuing education courses. Redefining the terms
centric relation and centric occlusion was a hurdle for
some but with patience Dr. Warga guided us through the
changes to our previous definitions. As the "unlearning"
progressed we spoke to the predictable, repeatable
method of restoring a patients occlusion no matter what
they presented with at our office. Centric relation freely
moves to centric occlusion followed by protecting the
teeth, joints and periodontium with a guidance unique to
each patient. Attention was given to repeatable step by
step correction of several varying cases. Restoration of
lower anteriors, then upper anteriors, finally restoring
the patients posterior teeth. Many cases were presented
to show this process is repeatable in all types of cases.
Splint therapy was discussed and several splints were
shown, allowing us to see the possible extreme variation
from centric occlusion to maximum intercuspation. Dr.
Warga took a complex topic and simplified it. Keeping
us attentive all the while with a few of his personal
beliefs, such as never using a post or post and core.
There were many "pearls" we all wait for and I found the
mornings lecture enjoyable, fast paced, and informative.

Streamlining Charitable Dentistry
The Supportful Foundation is a charitable organization which
promotes healthy living by facilitating programs and services that
improve the well-being of individuals and communities. One of
the premier programs offered by the Supportful Foundation helps people who cannot afford the costs of dental
treatments while removing the burden of restoration costs for charitable dentists. It is called the Dental-ful
Program and it is a dynamic network which connects underserved individuals with compassionate dentists,
laboratories, suppliers, and organizations.
How Does the Dental-ful Program Work?
Dentists receive free, or discounted restorations, from dental laboratories who sponsor the Supportful
Foundation. To receive restorations for charitable dental work, a dentist (or patient) fills out the Application for
Charitable Dental Restorations and sends it to the Supportful Foundation. With a generous approval process, the
dentist receives free, or discounted, restorations and then installs them into the mouth of the patient in need.
Through the Supportful Foundation there will be thousands of disadvantaged people who become empowered to
smile more often while managing their oral health needs. We hope to build bridges of compassion with many
dentists around the nation as we support their charitable efforts. For more information, or to learn about
overseas volunteering opportunities, contact David J. Rodriguez, Executive Director of the Supportful
Foundation at (510) 689-8669 or info@supportful.org. (Supportful is a non-profit organization. The USDTA
has offered to advertise to help benefit more across the country.)
The UCSD Student-Rum Free Dental Clinic Project and Pre-Dental Society run three free
dental clinics in San Diego County. Their licensed volunteer dentists and dental specialists
provide accessible, quality dental care to uninsured inner-city families, the working poor,
and homeless of all ages and help teach our students about the dental profession. Each
clinic provides a wide range of free dental care which includes comprehensive general
dentistry, prosthetics, endodontics, removable orthodontia, periodontics, and preventive
dentistry. They also hold a pediatric clinic two times a month for children and teenagers.
The UCSD Pre-Dental Society and Free Dental Clinic Project would appreciate any donations that your office
can provide. The organization operates solely on donations and services, and are always in need of dental
supplies and equipment so they can continue to provide quality dental care to their patients. They could also
use some toothbrushesand toys. Any donations will be of great assistance.

Dr. Hanna Hoesli passed away from a rare form of lymphoma in the comfort of
her home surrounded by family on February 17, 2012.
Hanna was born May 5, 1956 in Los Angeles. When reflecting on Hanna the
attributes that immediately come to mind are ones of intelligence, strength physical and mental, passion and compassion, determination and bravery. It was
a combination of all of these and other traits that made her an excellent dentist, a
wonderful daughter and sister, friend and colleague. Hanna's passion for helping
people led her to dentistry, a field that held her interest from a very young age. It
was also a profession that allowed her to demonstrate her technical perfection as well as to explore her
artistic side, creating crowns and fillings that looked like natural teeth. She was able to create her vision
of an ideal dental practice that was highly personalized and focused on what was always in the patient's
best interest.
Hanna felt it was important to give back to the dental community and to that end she maintained a parttime position at the USC Dental School and became involved with the California Dental Association's
Council on Peer Review. Hanna set the bar very high as to what she expected of herself and others
around her, and typically exceeded everyone's expectation of what could be achieved.
Her passions included tennis, travel, music - especially opera, her rose garden and propagating orchids.
She was very active in the United States Dental Tennis Association. It was the perfect organization that
fused her love of travel, competitive tennis and a morning filled with lectures and discussions on
dentistry. As a member for more than 20 years, the friendships and camaraderie that developed were
very dear to her.
Dr. Hanna Hoesli was an amazing person who faced the last 17 months fighting for her life with such
bravery and dignity. Her dearest wish during her valiant fight was to be able to return to her patients
and to dentistry.
She will be deeply missed.
Hanna Hoesli is survived by her mother, Hilda Hoesli, sisters, Karin Hoesli and Ingrid (Hoesli) Klestadt
and family, her aunt and uncles in America, and her cousins in Switzerland, Estonia, Germany and
America.
Words of condolence may be sent to her office: Hanna Hoesli, D.D.S., 7080 Hollywood Blvd. #808,
Hollywood, CA 90028. For those who prefer e-mail, words of support to the family may be sent to
