“GET THE BALL ROLLING…”
STAGE 1:
Our PE Leadership 10 class met
with the Wellness Workshop
coordinator and discussed using
S.M.A.R.T. goals to create a stepby-step agenda for implementing
a sport, physical activity, or
recreation project within our
school or community and learning
what makes an effective action
plan through examples and best
practices.
THEME: “Get the
Ball Rolling”
HERE WAS OUR IDEA: “GET THE BALL
ROLLING”
We chose to introduce LEADERSHIP
students and the BASES students and
their parents and/or caregivers to the
sport of lawnbowling.
STAGE 2: BOCCE
We decided to start our initiative
by introducing our leadership and
BASES students to each other
with 2 classes of bocce.
Students were split into teams
and played bocce on our school
grounds. Scoring and throwing
techniques are similar to lawn
bowling, so we thought this was a
good place to start.
The leadership students instantly took on a teaching role
and worked very well with the special needs students.
We found the BASES students loved the interaction and
participation with their peers.
CHALLENGE AND SUCCESS
Our initial plan was to try and
include parents and
caregivers. This did not work
during the bocce sessions.
We had 13-15 BASES students
and 28-30 leadership students
participating together in each
class.
We quickly found out having
set teams, keeping score and
recording wins/losses was
going to be difficult when
working with a variety of
students. Attendance and
commitment changed
throughout the 2 classes.
The leadership students
enjoyed and learned from
their “teacher” roles.
The BASES students became
more comfortable with their
peers and enjoyed forming
new friendships through
sport.
STAGE 3:
Introduction to lawn bowling
Fortunately, the local lawn
bowling pitch is within a ten
minute walk from our school.
After talks with the club
executive, they were happy to
supply us with volunteers from
their club and welcome all of our
students to their facility.
Fun and Games
On day 1 at the pitch, we spent an hour
and a half introducing the BASES students
to the sport of lawn bowling.
Our leadership students had previously
learned the rules, skills and techniques
when we participated in the sport as part
of our pe program.
We had 9-12 volunteers from the Mann
Park Club come and work with us. They
were pleasantly surprised at the
dedication and enthusiasm of the
leadership students in working with the
special needs kids.
INVITATION TO PARTICIPATE
Some parents came early to pick up their kids from the class in order to see them in action.
We sent home a notice with ALL students that as a follow up to our initiative, the lawn
bowling club was willing to open their doors for free, casual bowling every Friday night for
youth and their families. We are hoping after this introduction to the sport, some of our
students will take them up on their invitation!
OUR BIG DAY!
To end the school year, we planned for a
tournament and BBQ for everyone who
had been involved throughout the
process. This is what we chose to spend
our grant money on.
All participants received this great shirt,
lots of food and everyone received
prizes. Overall, we had 40+ people
participate on the last day.
TEAMWORK
A local newspaper reporter
joined us. She took photos and
wrote an article on the event.
Our principal joined in the
festivities and tried the game as
well.
Volunteers gave free lessons to
all adults (teachers, parents,
caregivers…) present during
tournament games.
THANK YOU!
Overall, we feel this initiative
was a TREMENDOUS success.
Thank you Motivate Canada for
your help in making this happen!
We look forward to the possibility
of trying this again in the future.
