President’s Report
By Steve Prugh, PGA
Short timer’s disease seems to
be setting in. My last meeting to run
is in 30 days. Time has flown by and
what a great experience this has
been. I have said this many times:
you receive much more in return
than you give. If you ever have
the opportunity to get involved in
governance, I highly recommend it.
The busy summer season is also winding down,
as is the PNW PGA tournament season. I am happy
to say that a number of our tournaments had larger
fields this year. I think this is a certain sign that the
golf business is on the rebound.
While on the topic of tournaments, I congratulate
Ryan Benzel for winning the Section Championship.
Also, with the end of tournament season comes
the final tally of the Section’s Player of the Year
program points. Congratulations to Corey Prugh for
winning Player of the Year (again— good job son!),
The following golf industry companies and their representatives drive financial support to
Pacific Northwest Section member events and programs.
Jeff Coston for winning Senior Player of the Year
(for the 7th year) and to Tim Feenstra for winning
Assistant Player of the year.
Gold Sponsors - over $20,000 per year
The fall chapter meetings are going on as I write this
letter, and a part of these meetings is the election
of our new Section Secretary. David Owens and
Greg Manley are very qualified candidates and you
all should get out and vote at either your chapter
meeting or the section meeting. The board will
also select a new District Director this fall. I am very
interested in any comments from members about
Dan Hill or Pat Huffer. Either of these two fine
gentlemen will represent our district wonderfully,
but I would like to hear your input.

Jeff Ellison, PGA
Please plan on attending the Merchandise
Show and Annual Meeting. Over 120 booths, 250
companies and 125 sales representatives support this
important program and they are looking forward
to helping you be successful. We have the usual
suspects of course but also a host of new companies
are taking advantage of the opportunity to visit
with YOU. The Show is a great place to view all the
new products in one place, to compare lines and to
seek out that new product that will be a hit with
your customers. Use the Show to help your business.
This is a buying show, please write a few orders in
support of the vendors who support you. Please
pre-register by visiting our web site — you can even
save paper by using the online form. Don’t forget to
alert your merchandising staff to attend as well.
We hold a number of special events around the
Show. Demo Night on Monday evening features
all our club vendors at Tacoma Firs giving you the
chance to test the latest and greatest while enjoying
the comrade of your fellow professionals and the
beverage of your choice. Demo Night would not be
possible without Mike Givens and his staff doing a
great job as our hosts. Thanks you! Two outstanding
education programs are on the schedule as well.
PGA Player Development Regional Manager Monte
Koch presents a Golf 2.0 program on Monday at
Fircrest (very near Tacoma Firs!) and Jeff Coston of
Semiahmoo, the most successful player in Section
history, will present a teaching seminar immediately
after the Show on Wednesday. Click here for details
and registration information.
The Pacific Northwest Section Annual Meeting
is scheduled for 7:30 AM on Wednesday, October
24. We open with a member breakfast at 6:30 –
bacon, eggs and the works to let you beat traffic.
This meeting is the culmination of our year. You’ll

hear reports on National activities, congratulate
our Special Award winners and have your last
chance to vote for our two candidates for Section
Secretary. Greg Manley and David Owens are
enjoying the chapter meeting tour and we’ve had
great discussions about how important this process
is to the eventual new officer. They will gain an
appreciation for the similarities and the uniqueness
of each chapter. If you are a member of the three
chapters still on the schedule, I encourage you to
attend and get to know these two gentlemen… and
vote for the one you want to be our next Secretary
and eventual President.

One final thought: the Fall Chapter Meetings
and the Section Annual Meeting mark the final
meeting for your Past Presidents. In most cases,
this marks a minimum of eight years of service for
your chapter past presidents – Tod Fitterer, Matt
Mandell, Steve Nelke, Gordon Tolbert, and Tony
Wilkins. Our Section Past President Dan Hill leaves
office after giving a whopping 17 years of service to
his chapters and the Section. Please take a minute
to thank these gentlemen for their service. They all
made a difference.

Benzel Wins PNW PGA Professional Championship
PNW PGA Professional Championship
By Molly Cooper, PGA
Director of Tournament and Membership Programs
September 18-20, 2012
WORLEY, ID - Circling Raven GC
6,947 Yards, Par 72, 103 players, $75,000 Purse
Ryan Benzel of Pro Golf - Lynnwood
won
the
Pacific
Northwest
PGA
Professional Championship at Circling
Raven GC and will lead ten of our PNW
PGA Professionals to compete in the 46th
National Championship at Sunriver Resort
on June 23-26, 2013.
Benzel, along with Corey Prugh of
Manito G&CC and Jason Pitt of Chewelah
G&CC, all finished the 54-hole stroke
play championship at 202, 14-under par
forcing a playoff. Benzel and Pitt both
birdied the first two playoff holes before
Benzel captured the title of 2012 PNW PGA
Professional Championship and the first
place check of $8,650.
Going into the final day of the event
with a two shot lead, Benzel’s thought
process was simple “My thoughts were to
go out and play my game and wherever
that left me in the tournament, it was all I
could control. So I focused on my shots, my
situations, and tried to play golf.”
After his win, Benzel was quoted saying
“It feels great to have won the 2012 PNW
PGA Professional Championship! It has
been a long time since I last won a Section
major, and I feel like I got the monkey off
my back from having only one Section
major win. Hopefully I can win more in the
years to come.”

Holk’s Highlights
Spotlight on Amy Pendergast
Amy Pendergast, Head PGA Professional at Bandon Dunes Golf Resort in Bandon,
Ore., has been named the recipient of the national 2012 PGA Merchandiser of the
Year Award for Resort Facilities.
Since joining the staff only 10 months after the resort opened, Pendergast has
seen it grow from 18 holes and one 800-square-foot golf shop to 85 holes and
approximately 5,000 square feet of retail space.
Facility: Bandon Dunes Resort
Hometown: Bandon, OR
Turned Professional: 2008
University: Portland State University
Amy’s merchandising philosophy:
Pendergast said a key to the success
of Bandon’s retail operation is the
emphasis that is placed on training and
motivation of staff led by PGA Director
of Golf Jeff Simonds. Included in that
is a monthly newsletter she produces,
which contains selling tips and product
information specifically for educating
the sales staff. In addition, she
schedules monthly training sessions
with vendors to enhance the expertise
of her team.
“Having the right product assortment
is central to the merchandising
philosophy in the Bandon Dunes
Golf Shop. Since we are a destination
resort, it is important that we stock a
variety of golf-related necessities and
gifts.
“The ever-changing weather on the
Oregon Coast is a driving factor for
the majority of products stocked. It
is the goal of the shop to prepare
every golfer for the round. I realized
some time ago that we are selling an
experience and we want every golfer
to be prepared for their own unique
experience—including the elements.
Approximately 50% of the
shop’s inventory is outerwear
for men and women.”

Player Development
Office Solutions Exclusively
Available to PGA Professionals
The Value of People is Ever-Increasing
By Monte Koch, PGA
PNW PGA Regional Player Development Manager
Have you noticed that nearly
every service call you make these
days must first go through a
“computerized” phone tree, or
an online “troubleshooting” web
page? A famous innovation and
motivational speaker, Simon Sinek,
recalls his amazement one day when
he achieved elite status with an airline company. In
the mail, he received a “private phone number”
whereby he could get a real person to address
his needs, issues, etc. instead of dealing with the
phone tree or support website. He also mentions,
“I saw an ad for a bank the other day, where they
advertised the fact that you could talk to a real
person.” Somehow, it seems that personal contact,
with a real person has become a luxury these days.
In our personal and professional lives, we have
all experienced this phenomenon as “customers”. In
a different way, but equally personal, we’ve all seen
how people, sometimes our staff, sometimes us, have
been taken out of the customer experience (and out
of the budget,) for the sake of the organization’s
bottom line. This is not new of course, because as
Sinek puts it, “In the 1980s, businesses started using
people as a way to balance the books,” to make the
bottom line result healthier.
As a result, Sinek states that we have, as a nation,
become distrustful of the organization we work
for, the politicians we vote for, etc. Naturally, we
all yearn for the days of the handshake, of personal
contact in the most basic way, as this is the nature
of the way we develop trust person to person.
Once again, technology seems to be battling the
value of personal contact. Andy Grove, the founder
of Intel, says “The only thing the microprocessor
ever did, was make things go faster.” These days, I
believe there are more “lonely people” than ever...
and this “people are a luxury” business model is
part of it.
Even with the pervasive compression within
many facility organizational charts, we can still
say our customers have a people-based experience
when they play with others, and interact with us.

This is yet another reason why I think the game
of golf is a great solution AND a I believe a great
selling point. Certainly, our game is not the fastest
game to be played, but it is unhurried enough to
allow two potential business partners to develop
a framework of trust. It is paced out enough for a
father and a son, or a potential father-in-law to get
to know his future son-in-law. It is slow enough for
a wife and husband to “get on the same page.”
The PGA of America has aligned with several leading brands to offer products and
As I’ve written before, the game of golf is all
about reality, connection, personal contact, natural
contact and much more. If you’re in business to
win, may I suggest evaluating the quality and the
sincerity of your facility’s “people plan” for the 2013
season?

In today’s “people are a luxury” business culture,
let’s leverage our people with this connection plan
en masse for the benefit of the bottom line and
our own professional credibility. Let’s not forget,
this people plan starts with us modeling it for (and

How the 2012 Election Could Impact Investors
By Blake Parrish, Financial Advisor
Merrill Lynch - Global Wealth Management
“The greatest wealth is health.” —VIRGIL
Tournaments
DATE
For all of the self-directed investors, or even if you have the slightest interest in
what the election means to your investments, this month’s article is for you. No, not the
PNW PGA officer elections, the 2012 U.S. Presidential Election. How does it affect your
investments? Well, regardless of which party wins the national election in November,
some sectors and industries will be directly impacted. Let’s explore Health Care and others
with an Obama win, and Defense plus a few more from a Romney win.
Hospitals
Medicaid MCOs
Pharmacy Benefit Managers
Pharmacy Distributors
Utilities (renewable)
Municipal Bonds
The current administration has strongly
supported Health Care Reform. Health Care
Reform is considered better for hospitals,
Medicaid managed care, pharmaceuticals, and
pharmacy benefit managers (PMSs). An Obama reelection would ensure the entrance of 30 million
uninsured into the health care market two years
from now, boosting pharmacy benefit managers
and pharmaceutical distributors.
In the utility sector, Obama supports the
extension of the wind production tax credit which
would be positive for large renewable generators
(contact me to talk about specific companies). In
addition, higher taxes on upper-income taxpayers’
income, capital gains, and dividends should bolster
demand for municipal bonds.
Watch this monthly column for tips, or contact
me directly. My team can help you get closer
to the pin on where you want to be with
retirement goals.

A Romney win is considered negative for
