General Information
All targets will be registered with the ATA and all shooters must be ATA members.
ATA and MSTA fees apply to each day’s program or event. State Fee is one cent on
each 2009 registered target. ATA rules shall govern.
All ties for trophies will be shot-off the day the event is finished, time permitting: failure
to be present for a shoot-off will forfeit your right therein. Money will be divided in case
of ties, except the Butte Medal.
Singles shoot-offs will be limited to 100 targets, and if still tied will be carried over.
Ties will be shot off in the following manner: Singles – 25 targets; Handicap – 25
targets; Doubles – 10 pairs; All-Around – 20 singles, 10 handicap and 5 pairs of
doubles.
Please be ready when your squad number is posted on the starting board.
Hand loads permitted, subject to inspection for shot and powder specifications.
If you want your empty cases, please catch them before they hit the ground.
Watch your scores – they cannot be changed after you leave the shooting post.
Errors in scores must be corrected on the score sheets before you change stations.
The management will refuse to enter into discussion on this point and will compile the
scores as shown on the score sheets.
Grievances will be handled by grievance committee on the grounds.
This is an Invitational Tournament and the management reserves the right to reject,
refund, or disqualify any contestant who interferes with the safety, conduct, accuracy, or
sportsmanship of the Shoot. The management may exercise the right to change or
modify this program in whole or in part.
The Handicap Committee reserves the right to change the classification of any shooter
(or change penalty yardage) at any time during the tournament.
Concessionaires must have permission of the shoot chairman to sell on the grounds.
On singles and handicap, only the “lost” targets will be called. In doubles, the results on
both targets will be called.
Practice traps will be open all day from 8 a.m. Targets at $5.00 per 25.
The Billings Trap Club will not be responsible for any accident or for loss of property.
A.T.A. rules on alcohol will be strictly enforced.
To win the H.R. “Firecracker” Peterson 100 straight pin you must break 100 targets on
one of the three championship events (Doubles, Singles, and Handicap), no carryovers. If you qualify, see the State Secretary Jim Jones.

MSTA Standard Procedures
Membership
Individuals who are legal residents of the State of Montana for a minimum of six months who
compete in one or more registered trap shoots in the state of Montana each year shall
automatically become members of the M.S.T.A. after paying the annual fee established by the
board.
Resident
He or She must have met the legal and Amateur Trapshooting Association requirements for
Citizenship in the State of Montana. He may not have participated in the state shoot in any other
state, representing himself as a resident of that state and eligible for state shooting titles of that
state, within the calendar year last preceding the Montana State Trapshooting Association’s last
state trap shoot. If he is desirous of transferring his membership from any other state to Montana
and becoming a member of this association, He shall inform the MSTA of his intentions at least six
months prior to any Montana State shoot to be eligible to participate in same. A shooter without a
permanent Amateur Trapshooting Association card shall be required to qualify his residency with
the Montana State Trapshooting Association delegate or the handicap committee.
Penalty Yardage and Classification
The handicap committee must assign a minimum of 24 yards and class A singles and class A
doubles to any shooter that does not have 500 singles, 500 handicap and 500 doubles in the
current and previous year combined.
Class Winners
Beginning with Thursdays Class Doubles, the winner of any Class Event advances to the next
highest class for the remained of the shoot. The shooter must advise the cashier of such changes
for options and purse calculations. Clarified by directors @ 1995 meeting to High in state and High
out of state shooter by class in Class Singles and Class Doubles Events. This rule reworded in
2000 to “winners and ties in state and out of state advance a class.” At the 1997 board of directors
meeting the board voted to award pins to the class winners in the state class doubles and state
class singles winners. At the 1999 board meeting the board voted to award the above pins to the
class winners in the state doubles on Friday and the state singles event 200 birds on Saturday and
Sunday.
Yardage Winners
Any shooter, that earns yardage, in any handicap event, must shoot the next event from his or her
new yardage or forfeit any and all prizes. The shooter is responsible to have his or her card
punched and advise the cashier of yardage changes for options and purse calculations.
All-State Team
Shooters must have at least 1500 Singles, 1500 Handicap, and 1000 Doubles to qualify. The
same applies to Veterans, Ladies, Juniors, Sr. Vet, and Sub Jr. If a category shooter makes the
All-State Team they must vacate the special category award allowing the next high shooter in the
special category to move up. In the event no one in a special category qualifies, with the required
targets, a winner will be chosen based on a combined average of singles and handicap targets.
The number of targets registered will also have a strong bearing on the selection. The above
targets requirements were revised by the board at the 1998 directors meeting. Sr. Vet and Sub Jr.
were added at the July 2001 directors meeting. In 2005 Women Team of top Five with 1200
singles, 1200 handicap, 500 doubles. High combined avg. will be captain if she qualifies for the allstate team the next highest Lady will be captain. In 2006 the requirements to shoot the
championship event was added. In 2007 voted on again and passed.
8
Hi Average Awards
To qualify for a Montana State Hi Average Award a shooter must have either 1500 Singles or 1500
Handicap or 1000 Doubles. To qualify for the Over All Award, shooters must have at least 1500
Singles, 1500 Handicap, and 1000 Doubles.
Champion of Champion Event
Will be shot on the first half of the State Singles Championship (Event 10). Open only to Montana
shooters who are members of paid up M.S.T.A member clubs. Each club selects their Champion
who is then eligible to compete. Each club champion must pay a $1 entry fee and place his or her
name on the list provided. There will be a trophy and $50 awarded to the winner. Ties shoot-off
for both trophy and money. Shoot-offs are carried over to 2nd half of Singles Championship (Event
13) Via 25’s. If a tie exists reverse score on 25’s will be used. If still undecided there will then be a
head to head shoot-off.
State Singles Championship
State Singles championship will be decided on 200 targets, Events 10 & 13. The M.S.T.A. will
provide funds to the State Champion or a Runner Up, provided he or she agrees to enter the
Champion of Champions race at the Grand American Handicap if eligible. ATA RULES allow only
the State Champion or Runner Up to enter the Champion of Champion event.
In All Cases
The recipients of these monies must enter the Champion of Champions event at the Grand to
receive this expense money from the M.S.T.A. WINNERS are to notify the M.S.T.A. secretary as
soon as possible whether they will or will not be able to attend the Grand. In 1999 the board
revised this rule. If the Champion or Runner-Up does not attend the Grand the Days fees are
retained in the M.S.T.A. treasury and awarded at the following year’s state shoot in the following
manner. The money is to be rounded down to the nearest $500 and awarded as added money to
the High All Around winners by class (AA, A, B, C, D) high gun 50-30-20 closed to out of state
shooters.
Special Category Trophies
All Shooters eligible to shoot for Special Trophies must advise the cashier and place their names
on the lists provided at the bulletin board.
Declare Special Categories
All Ladies, Juniors, Sub-Juniors, Veterans. Senior Veterans must declare their special category at
the time of their entry in any registered event. Without such declaration at the time of entry, the
shooter will not be allowed to compete for the applicable special category trophies. No exceptions
to this Rule are to be allowed.
Birthdays
For purposes of determining age category for HOA and HAA awards the category declared by the
participant on the first day he/she shoots shall be used.
Juniors, Sub-Juniors, Veterans, and Senior Veterans
When there are trophies for Juniors and Veterans only in a given event; Juniors and Sub-Juniors
are both in the Junior class; Veterans and Senior Veterans are both in the Veteran class. This
cannot apply if ATA trophies are involved.
9
High Gun Payoffs
The number of pays in a High Gun payoff is determined by how many shooters enter the event. In
the Montana State Shoot one place will be paid for each quantity filled with the first placed paid
regardless of entries, and a place for any fraction thereof. In a 1 in 7 event one place is paid for
each 7 entries and one more place is paid if there are any remaining entries. For example: 21
entries pay 3 places, 22 entries pay 4 places. Four places are paid until there are 29 entries.
Special Event
Special Event payoff is Hi Gun System. Paying 1 place per 10 entries with 70% for the buyer and
30% for the shooter. The payoff is limited to 20 PLACES. The Board added that the name of the
shooter, his score, his pay, the name of the buyer and his pay be included on the payoff report.
Shoot Off Procedures
The M.S.T.A board of directors voted in 1995 to standardize the shoot offs to the format used at
the Grand American with one shoot of deciding multiple trophies.
Butte Rod & Gun Medal
The Butte Rod & Gun Medal is a non-registered 40-target event. (15 @ 20 Yds, 15 @ 22 Yds, 5
pair dbls.) Targets $10.00, Purse non-compulsory (open) $10.00.
Only Montana Shooters are eligible to win and have their name placed on the medal. $100 is
added for the winner of the medal. There are no classes in the open purse, all that enter shoot for
the same money. The purse is split 30-30-20-20 Percentage System. Target prices set 7/11/97 @
Director’s meeting.
Added Money: $14,100
A total of $14,100 of added money is open to all shooters. This is divided among several events as
listed in the program. No special entry fee is required to participate. This money is provided by:
M.S.T.A $8,000, of which $4,834 is the A.T.A. rebate, Wellington Technologies, Inc $1,000, Jim
Jones & Friends $2,000, Rimrock GMC $500, Stockman Bank $1000, Billings Trap Club $600.

electricity and water on a limited basis. $50 min., 5 full days, additional parking is provided at no

Squad Hustling
In order to keep disturbance of shooters on the firing line to a minimum, we will not call each squad
on the PA system. The numbers of squads and their starting order will be posted on the starting
board. There will be no waiting! Your cooperation and attention are necessary to make this
procedure run smoothly. We will be shooting 50 targets per trap and starting six squads at the
beginning of each event.
Pre-registration
An advanced squadding form is contained in this program. This form must be received by June 29
2009, to be considered, and must include a $10.00 non-refundable deposit. Please make checks
payable to the Billings Trap Club. (Deposit will be applied to the entry fees.) The management is
not responsible for any late entries. This is the only method used for pre-squadding. No phone
calls accepted. Partial or full squads accepted, but they should all be mailed in the same envelope.
Upon arriving at the shoot – (1) go to the handicap table to pick up your entry form and be
classified. (2) Go directly to cashier to pay entry - squad and post will already be marked on form.
Safety
Safety will be of primary concern through out all aspects and activities of this shoot. It is each
person’s responsibility to conduct him/her self in a safe manner at all times, and not endanger
anyone else. This includes shooters, workers, and spectators; and covers gun handling, driving,
equipment use and maintenance, and any other potentially dangerous activity.
Alcohol and Gunpowder do not mix. Let’s help each other keep trapshooting a safe sport by
correcting any unsafe condition that may arise. Do it now – Later may be too late.
