PORT OF SAVANNAH:
What is a Port Authority?
•A local or regional governmental entity that oversees
transportation facilities such as ship ports, airports, bus terminals
and so forth.
•In the case of sea ports, they may be owned and operated by the
authority, as in the case of the Georgia Ports Authority’s
operations in Savannah and Brunswick, or authority’s may own
their terminal operation yet operate in a landlord environment,
such as the Port of New York / New Jersey.
•Ports such as Savannah, Norfolk and Charleston operate as “state
authorities”, while other port authorities may come under the
jurisdiction of a municipality, such as the Port of Jacksonville.
