Pitney Bowes, Inc. Confidential- Internal use only Page 2 Quick History of the DM Series™ Quick History • • • Late 1990s and early 2000s Postal requirements changed, requiring Postage meters to transition from electro-mechanical devices to secure computer chips – called PSD or a Postal Security Device. The USPS® announced 4 phases of migration that started around 1998 and ended in 2008. Each phase marked an end to mechanical technology for postage printing. In 2002, Pitney Bowes led advancements in metering technology with the development and launch of the DM Series™ including the DM500, DM800 and DM900 Series. Quick History - DM500 Series (DM525, DM575) • • • The DM500 Series was the entry-level automatic mailing system that replaced the U570 Series. (The 6500, A900 or B900 postage meters were ultimately decertified by the USPS® in 2006 and 2008.) The IntelliLink® Control Center was common for each DM Series™ system. However, software features on each model may vary depending on which options were available at point-of-sale. Two versions were available at launch: DM500 (135 LPM) and DM550 (160 LPM). At the time, neither system had the capability of WOW (Weigh-on-the-Way). DM525 without WOW Module • • • • DM525 with WOW Module IntelliLink® Control Center In 2007, the USPS® changed rules for thick envelopes and small packages. Pitney Bowes developed “Shape Based Rating” functionality in each of our automatic mailing systems to enable the system to not only weigh mail, but to measure the thickness and size of mail automatically. August 2008, the second generation of DM500 was introduced. The DM500 became the DM525 with increased speed from 135 LPM to 150 LPM. The DM550 became the DM575 with increased speed from 160 to 175 LPM. An optional WOW Module was also introduced for both systems which included Shape Based Rating functionality. (DM525 – 55 LPM WOW; DM575 – 85 LPM WOW.) Once inventory was available in 2010, the Green DM Series™ was introduced to provide high quality systems for budget conscious clients. The Green DM525 and Green DM575 had all the same features and options as a “new” manufactured system. Pitney Bowes, Inc. Confidential- Internal use only Page 3 Quick History – DM800 Series (DM825, DM875) • • • The DM800 Series was launched as a mid-to-high volume production system. The DM800 Series replaced both the U570 and Galaxy Mailing systems. In 2002, the DM800 Series was the entry-level for automatic in-line weighing. (The DM500 Series only had WOW capabilities available after 2007.) This original DM800 System was a full console system – not modular. (Being a console system means that the feeder, WOW and printing functions were all a single unit.) Two versions of the DM800 Series were available at launch: DM800 @ 70/190 LPM and 90/210 LPM (WOW, Non-WOW LPM). DM825 without WOW Module Original Galaxy System • • • • DM825 with WOW Galaxy (launched 1998) was the first digital system in the high volume market. However, Galaxy did not meet USPS® guidelines for an Information Based Indicia (IBI-compliant indicia). Eventually, Pitney Bowes stopped offering the Galaxy system in favor of the DM800 Series. By August 2008, the second generation of DM800 was introduced. The systems were fully redesigned, changing from a “console” to “modular” architecture. With the modular architecture, the 3 core system components (Feeder, WOW, Printer) could be interchanged to provide multiple configurations that met the market needs including Shape Based Rating functionality. The Green DM825 and Green DM875 were introduced in 2010 with all the same features and options as a “new” manufactured system. Like the DM500 Series, the IntelliLink® Control Center was common for each DM Series™ system. However, software features on each model varied depending on which options were available at point-of-sale. Quick History – DM900 Series (DM900, DM925) • • • The DM900 was launched in April 2002 as our high volume, production system. The DM900 replaced both the Galaxy and Paragon systems. (Paragon was the premier mailing system on the market since 1990.) Like the original DM800 Series, the DM900 was a full console system – not modular. The DM900 operated at 110/240 LPM (WOW, Non-WOW). Shape Based Rating was incorporated in 2007. Green solutions were launched in 2010. Original DM900 Series Pitney Bowes, Inc. Confidential- Internal use only Page 4 Quick History – DM1000, DM1100 • • • • The DM1000 was launched in October 2002 – 6 months after the DM900. The DM1000 was a more pure replacement for the Paragon system, and included features such as Jet Spray Sealing, Open and Closed Flap Sealing, and other functions critical to our highest volume mailers. From 2002 to 2009, the DM1000 was the premier system on the market – originally rated at 130/260 LPM. In 2009, the DM1100 replaced the original DM1000 with improvements to overall productivity and efficiency. The system ultimately processed mail at the fastest speeds ever – topping 140 LPM in WOW, and 280 LPM in Non-WOW. Green DM1000 and Green DM1100 became available in 2010. Confidential- Internal use only Page 5 DM Series™ Value Propositions How did the DM Series™ systems differ from prior models? Key Points Included: • • • • • • • Internal PSD (Postal Security Device) – replaced traditional postage metering technology and enabled digital printing of postage. IntelliLink® Control Center – a single control center simplified operations by eliminating multiple controls on the mailing system. This was the user’s gateway to IntelliLink® Technology. IntelliLink® Technology – a core internet technology that enabled software features to be downloaded directly to the mailing system and configured specifically for a customer’s needs. The Control Center is the user’s “tool” to access this backbone technology that created network links between our customers, our Accounting servers, download services and the USPS® for tracking services. Value Based Services – a suite of services were offered including Delivery Confirmation, Signature Confirmation, Electronic Return Receipt and other features that streamlined operations and saved on Postal expenses. Postage By Phone® – simplified access for refilling the meter and checking the account balance was available via the control center. USPS® Rate Updates – automatic downloads helped keep rates, ZIP Code and Class changes up-to-date. Software Updates – automatic downloads helped keep the core software up-to-date with the latest improvements and enhanced features. Pitney Bowes, Inc. Confidential- Internal use only Page 6 Understanding Information Based Indicia (IBI) Understanding Digital and Postal Indicia Current USPS® requirements for meter indicia mandate that the indicia must be generated electronically and produced by a nonimpact printing technology (i.e. ink-jet, thermal, or laser print). Information Based Indicia (IBI) technology uses an indicia with a two-dimensional bar code to encode security and mail processing information. The indicia contains the same human-readable information as the traditional postage meter indicia. All domestic postage meters that have been placed since January 01, 2009, regardless of manufacturer, are IBIP compliant. What IBI Provides The 2-dimensional bar code is an indication of the latest digital technology approved by the USPS®: • Encrypted Data • PSD serial number • Ascending register (how much money has been used by the meter since manufacture) • Descending register (how much money remains in the meter for use) • Date (applied by system clock) • Manufacturer • Unique digital signature • Origin ZIP Code Pitney Bowes, Inc. Demystifying “IBI-Lite” Some Neopost and Hasler solutions offer a modified version of the Information Based Indicia that they refer to as “IBI Lite”. They refer to the IBI Lite as the “next generation” of Information Based Indicia- inferring by default that the IBI produced by Pitney Bowes may be or may be becoming obsolete. Educate your customer that the IBI Lite is not the next generation of indicia, just a variation of the existing IBI. The USPS® has no migration plans in place to decertify any IBI compliant meters. For the purposes of USPS® use, the full IBI applied by Pitney Bowes solutions actually contains more information than the IBI Lite. The value proposition of the IBI Lite, according to Neopost and Hasler is that it uses 40% less ink than a traditional Information Based Indicia. Customers naturally assume that this will result in a 40% reduction in overall ink costs, thereby lowering the total cost of ownership. Educate you customer on true ink cost. True ink costs can be derived by taking the cost of the cartridge and dividing it by the identified yield for the cartridge to get a costper-indicia. Do the math for your customer to assist them in understanding the anticipated ink costs per month for both your solution and the competitive solution. It demonstrates a consultative approach and invalidates a “40% less ink” statement by the competitor. The DM925 required open-flap sealing, which means the user must “shingle” the envelope flaps if sealing was required. This was a differentiation point between the DM800 Series (closed flap sealing) and the DM1000 Series (open and closed flap sealing.) Overview The DM900 Series defined the standard for higher-volume output. It offered feeding, sealing, imprinting postage, and stacking mail at speeds up to 250 pieces a minute. The Weigh-on-the-Way™ (WOW™) mechanism was incorporated into this high-output digital system for maximum productivity. This system’s advanced features included 3/4˝ thickness processing and an auto-align that uniformly feeds various mail pieces. Mailers could choose from either a WOW or Non-WOW version. Software features may have been enabled at point-ofsale or post-install with a simple connection to the Pitney Bowes infrastructure. This section highlights some unique features that are widely used on the DM Series™ (DM500 – DM1100). Time Date Stamp • Automates the time and date stamping for applications that require record of receipt for incoming mail • Printing mode to mark incoming mail as ‘Received’ • Prints on the top right corner of the envelope Postage Pass - Automated Postage Refill • Automatic refilling of the postage with a ‘low postage threshold’ set by the customer. (For those who have used or heard of E-Z Pass on the highway, this is the same idea for customer postage.) • Customers can automate a ‘refill’ amount, as well as a reset amount (Example: Reset when it reaches $50, refill for $500 automatically) Constant Connection • Constant Connection is LAN based connectivity for faster refills and quicker software updates. As technology progressed after 2002, LAN network connectivity became widespread. • Many customers were eliminating Analog Phone lines in favor of LAN networking due to the incremental cost to maintain phone lines. LAN networks could be expanded without costs to rd a 3 party provider (i.e. Phone company). Custom Text Entry • Mailers can create messages to print on envelopes. This included the ability to save up to 5 custom messages in memory, and print up to 5 lines of text (max 20 characters per line). • Guideline included the following: Fixed font (Lucidia Console at 10 point). Prints to the left of postage and envelope graphics (just like an ad); not left justified on an envelope. Pitney Bowes, Inc. Differential Weighing • Differential weighing saves customers time by eliminating the need to weigh each mail piece and parcel individually! Simply place all mail on the scale at once, then remove each piece, one at a time, and run it through the system. • The system automatically calculates the postage for each piece of mail as it is removed from the scale, calculates the “difference” in weight, and prints it on the piece as it feeds through the system. Dry Metering • Dry metering allows DM Series™ users (DM525™ – DM1100™) to account for mail pieces without printing postage. In Seal Only Mode or Time/Date Stamp Mode a customer can run mail pieces though the mailing system without printing postage to either seal mail pieces or perform a piece count. Without dry metering there is no ability to report piece counts back to an accounting solution. • Dry metering takes it one step further allowing customers to report back to INVIEW™ TMR or higher level accounting solutions, pieces in either a batch level or account level. Additionally, surcharges can be applied as a handling charge. • The need for dry metering has increased as rate structures and processing option have become more complex. Tracking the number of pieces by and multiplying to determine the cost then requires a manual entry into reporting/accounting solutions. Dry metering automates the whole process for mailers. Way back in the 1970s and 1980s, a postage meter had a capability commonly called “Accounting” that was somewhat limited to tracking pieces and postage by departmental account names. It was often difficult to generate reports or export the data to make it more useful to the organization. However, with the introduction of IntelliLink® Technology in 2002, Pitney Bowes’ value extended well beyond these traditional limits. With advancements in technology, Pitney Bowes has provided our clients a full range of information management and analytic tools that not only include the collection and storage of raw data, but now extending into enterprise consolidation, web reporting and exporting functionality. Single Meter Data Management • Standard or Basic Accounting – commonly found on entry-level systems. • INVIEW Accounting – more detailed accounting and analytics. An option on most entry-level and mid-range systems. • Budget Manager – similar to INVIEW Accounting, but provides tools for budgeting, setting spend limits, and includes the PC Transfer Utility for managing larger numbers of accounts. • Connect+® Accounting – virtually identical to Budget Manager in function, but with notable differences in how the data is managed. Connect+®Accounting is a cloud-based system that doesn’t rely on local memory for data storage. Refer to the chart for specification differences. Single Meter or Enterprise Data Management • INVIEW Total Meter Reporting – a web based solution compatible to INVIEW Accounting and Budget Manager. INVIEW TMR provides remote, web-based reporting and analytics. INVIEW TMR also allows consolidation of postage meter and account information from multiple sites in an enterprise. • Business Manager – a host PC-based solution used commonly to consolidate and report on information from multiple mailing systems. Important Distinction – INVIEW Accounting vs INVIEW TMR INVIEW Accounting is not the same as INVIEW Total Meter Reporting (TMR). INVIEW Accounting refers to the account chargeback feature on the mailing system. INVIEW TMR refers to our web- based solution where a client gains remote visibility to account chargeback information on MyAccount at PB.com. To gain web visibility with INVIEW TMR, the mailing system must have either INVIEW Accounting or Budget Manager installed. (Standard Accounting on the meter is not compatible to INVIEW TMR.)
