We had a lot of returning players from the previous years (Nat, Julie, Terri, Isabel, Meagan, Lauren) plus we gained four long time club members who didn’t want to train this year for one reason or another (Claire, Mariet, Alex and Nicolette), ending up with 10 players. That may sound like a lot, but I think we only had all 10 players to the game once or twice in the season – and we managed to rotate quite well so that players got a fair amount of court time. We had a lot of defenders, so this sometimes meant that players had to play out of position – and everyone coped really well. Julie – we’ll make a WA out of you yet. It was also nice to have a game day coach this year – thanks to Stacey for volunteering at the start of the year (even if it was a slightly alcohol induced conversation) and for being an enthusiastic and positive person on the sidelines for us. Overall, we had a really good season finishing in 2nd place. There were lots of great wins, a couple of small losses (no absolute thrashings at all), quite a few incidents of less than desirable umpiring (by the opposition umpires of course – not our Wembley umps), 3 hotly contested ‘Wembley Derby’s’ against Wembley 6 most importantly fortnightly trips to the pub after the 2.30 game. On the news front, we had an engagement congrats to Isabel and Ben, and there will be a wedding in a few weeks time (Meagan and Abhi). We were lucky to have no serious injuries during the season. A couple of players were sidelined at various times with what I like to call ‘getting old’ injuries (Terri’s calf muscle, Alex’s knee, Claire’s neck) but overall it was great to not be carting anyone off to sick bay in a wheel chair throughout the season. This is especially good considering our warm up normally consisted of standing on the sidelines chatting. There are a couple of moments in our season stand out and are worth mentioning. A particularly unpopular umpire in our division was umpiring on the court next to us, and was the recipient of one of Lauren’s wayward (and very hard) passes – in the back of the head. Yes, it was entirely an accident, but when the umpire turned around demanding to know ‘who threw that‘ Lauren was smart enough not to own up. It must have been ‘unconscious’ payback for the warning you got the week before Loz! The funniest thing was that the players on the sidelines of that court secretly gave Lauren the thumbs up when the umpire wasn’t looking. Then there was the ‘stacks on’ incident. No – we’re not talking players here – we’re talking kids. One particular afternoon Nat, Terri and Claire all had to bring their kids for various reasons. They were under the supervision of 2 grandma’s while we were playing, but there seemed to be an increasing amount of running and chasing and arguing going on. When the final whistle went and we were all shook hands and left the court, we looked over to the grassed area to see the kids all squirming around in a pile doing goodness knows what. They were happy – so whatever it was can’t have been that bad - it was just a crazy kids day out at the netball. For the last couple of years the non training team has been really strong all season, and then when it comes to finals time we’ve just seemed to lose it...and unfortunately 2010 was no exception. In the first final we actually played well, but ended up going down to Wembley 6 by 2 goals. Then in the second final UWA had the better of us from the start. Well done to everyone though for not giving up and fighting it out to the bitter end. One of these years we will go all the way and win a medal, I’m sure of it. When it comes to the crunch and you need the goals guarded, Look to our three defenders; the game’s won ‘fore it’s started, First we have Sharon our tall and lean keeper, Her arms wave in defence like an aerial sweeper. Then there is Kristy the tall leaning tower of Pisa, It’s the pre game snakes and drinks that really does please her, She’s definitely got height, she’s the right netball sort, And we’re all glad she’s on our side on the netball court! Next is Chantel Lappin, our trusty goal defender, Our Channy the party girl - fond of a big bender, Unfortunately shin splints sidelined her with reason, To lead our cheer squad for the rest of the season. Wing Defence: Amy owns this position, She has luscious blonde hair and an eye for precision, The pom of the team (we can’t always understand), But with any enemy forward she’ll easily withstand. Lizzy’s the youngest of the Wembley 8 team, She ran hard through the court and passed like a dream, With her quick little legs and famous intercepts, Lizzy’s an old hand at this netball concept. Captain Kate is our next centre court player, When coach was absent she’d be acting team surveyor, She was versatile on court and a hard running great, With a focus to increase our sometimes winning fate. Up front in attack we have Ang on the court, Who took off to Bali and a relaxing holiday resort, In the midst of her partying she sliced her right foot, This unluckily meant on the bench she did stay put. Country girl Bec’s one of the team shooters, Racking up the kilometres as our country commuter, The goals she shot were only sometimes great, But her rebounds reduced our turnover rate! Finally Sarah with the gorgeous red hair, Led by example and was always fair, The goals she shot were a little slow to start, But in a few training sessions, she was a real work of art! Unfortunately we didn’t make finals this time, But Michelle stood steadfast coaching from the sideline, So thanks for all your help, your guidance and praise, We will definitely miss your kind and gentle ways. Well there you have it; you have now met Wembley 8, However winning games for the club was not to be our fate, Best you look out for us next year at the club, Or next time you have wandered down to the pub! Anna could be described as the mother figure of our team, dependable and consistent throughout the entire season. From the outset of the season Anna did not seem to miss a shot, putting it up from everywhere. At the beginning of the season Anna was also appointed the social head of our team, attempting to rally the team to the Wembley after ever game and organised a dinner during the season and the teams end of year wind-up. Anna was a highly valued member of the team through her attitude and effort on and off the netball court. Congratulations on a fantastic season Anna and I am sure there will be many more like it to come in the future. Bree consistently played to the best of her abilities all season in the centre court. Bree was always positive, remained smiling and was always encouraging of the possibility of a win each week regardless of our opposition. In Wing Defence she worked hard for intercepts and applied pressure to her opposing player. She was also able to make the transition into attacking roles in Centre and Wing Attack with relative ease and ran hard to provide good leads and options in attack. She even managed a few goals in our final game against Aranmore as a Goal Attack! The heart of Wembley 9 was our passionate dominator of defence Bridie, whose season got off to an interesting start when she was sent off by the umpire in our first game for swearing. But her constant enthusiasm for the game shone through week in, week out both at training and games (and curse-free) until the May 29 game against UWA when she popped her shoulder out. Rumour has it when the physio was trying to get her shoulder back in, she swore and in the same breath apologised for swearing in front of kids. Bridie’s commitment, support and cheering – bringing lollies to the game even though she was injured – helped lift our team when we needed it. We were very glad to see her make her comeback and run out on the court again for the last few games of the season. Caitlyn is our goal attack She shoots from near and far Sprinting around the netball court, Caitlyn you’re a star!!! Claire is a lovely person who has played really well all season. She happily played in any position that needed to be filled and always tried her best whatever the situation. Claire is a very calming person who is encouraging and a joy to play with. She has been very supportive and always comes to training and games with a great attitude and enthusiasm. I have really enjoyed being in a team with her and wish her the best for the rest of the year. Hayley is the youngest player on our team. She is a team player who always goes hard for the ball. She never stops running around and loves getting all the intercepts. Never complains, is always smiling when coming to training and games. She’s injured herself a few times but she’s always brave. She’s the energetic rabbit in our team! Laura plays with a strong will. She constantly strives in any position and knows how to hold her own against solid players with sharp elbows... Laura holds numerous talents as a centre court player, and possesses secret skills as a goal shooter which only became apparent in the last quarter of the last game of the season. It was great playing alongside Laura this season knowing she is a reliable team player. Tegan – aka Doigy: Our trusty captain, Teegs was always setting the bar high. Her first year at Wembley has been a good one - she is always the first to training, yelling positive comments down the court, offering constructive criticism between quarters and pulling the team together in tough times. Teegs took over with her no nonsense boot camp style fitness training when Catherine was away and although the team hated it, it was ultimately the best thing for us. She learnt the hard way after consuming a dodgy coffee from the Matthew’s canteen and was sidelined for a game struggling to hold down her lunch. All in all, Doigy has been a great team mate and leader and almost managed to shrug off her past Aranmore playing experience in favour of the black and white… “Aranmore three cheers for Wembley… I mean, Wembley, three cheers for Aranmore!” Almost Catherine has been a fantastic coach, with just the right amount of fun, fitness and organisation. She has had to deal with numerous injuries, not enough people for training and organising spare players when needed. Cath has always been on time and well prepared for both training and games, giving great feedback and staying positive when the team is down and getting everyone to change their attitude and encouraging us to always play our best. Thanks for a great year Cath : ) GO WEMBLEY! My first visit down to the courts and I was pleasantly surprised, the team I had been slotted into was full of great chicks, the coach seemed like fun and most importantly I could still remember how to catch the ball. Things were looking promising. Until of course I headed over to pick up my uniform. It had been a while since I’d worn a netball skirt, but how bad could it possibly be? I naively thought to myself. It was at this point that I saw the plastic bag full of LYCRA. I must admit I nearly turned and ran to my car, never to return again. Of course it didn’t help when I got home and my younger, slimmer sister came bouncing out of her room in her new uniform looking like a supermodel… but I soon accepted the idea, bought a uniform one size too big (to allow for the inevitable winter bulge) and got excited about playing netball again. I’m so glad that I stayed… 2010 has been a successful and enjoyable season for Wembley 11. We have developed into a happy team who enjoy playing the game together and also enjoy the challenge of fighting for a win (geeze we didn’t make it easy for ourselves at times!) Under the leadership of Jo (legend) who was full of endless pearls of wisdom such as; “Squeeze your butt cheeks if you are trying to stay on court… SQUEEZE YOUR BUTT CHEEKS!” (Advice to anyone interested: do not yell this out at a social game of netball if nobody knows what you are talking about…) We trained hard (most weeks) played hard and tried our hardest to listen to coaching advice prior to games instead of sharing stories of Friday night or plans for Saturday. Apologies on behalf of all of us Jo, as it was always one of us who wouldn’t shut up at some point and let you talk! Thanks for everything; you have been a fantastic coach! As for the girls… everyone has bought something different to the team, whether it be taking on leadership roles at pre game warm ups, organising social gatherings or just always training hard and being a positive part of the team, everyone has contributed something to make the season an enjoyable one. Everyone had their role on the court… Jos, Jody, Pip and Mel, the energiser bunnies, always there when you need someone to pass to. Jodie, Mary, Penny and Shannon (the kindest defender ever!) all standing tall in defence with their lightning reflexes and spaghetti arms and Kylie, myself and Jodie trying our best to finish all of that hard work off with a goal! Of course I can’t let people get away with some of the more memorable contributions… Mary joining in the Wembley cheer before we went on court, deciding only to apply self encouragement! “Goooooo Mary!!” Kylie dressing like an Eskimo at the slightest chance of light rain, Penny’s Vita Brit passes that everyone is too scared to catch at times and Pip coming to training with a rock on her finger (congrats Pip!) Overall, we have had a lot of fun, we have had much success (hopefully more will come our way during the finals) and we have had lots of good laughs. So I guess the decision to come back was a good one for me. I certainly don’t recover as quickly after games now that I’m ten years older, and I still don’t love the idea of the Lycra (Is it absolutely necessary??) But it certainly is an enjoyable world to be a part of and I can’t think of a better group of girls to share the experience with. See you all back next year to do it all over again! With the final score a tight 38-29, the sidelines were marked by the nervous pacing of netball stalwarts and coach extraordinaires’ Amy Litton and Annika Johns. Considering most ladies had never played together before, Wembley 11 had a brilliant season. The team soon discovered playing in wet weather was not its forte, however to their advantage there were only 2 wet games, one won, one lost to season rivals Stirling Saints. With a team makeup of four shooters and two defenders, positioning players sometimes proved a challenge, however a swift rotation into WD proved successful. All players improved in their game this season, whether it be skills or leading – testament to the coach’s hard work, experience and dedication. Amy was our fantastic defensive coach and kept us focused on tight defense and keeping our chins up when under pressure. Annika our expert in the offence, kept us challenged with new drills and focusing on strong leads and calling for the ball. The team’s success was also owed to Kasse’s positive and inspiring influence as team captain. Kasse is a brilliant defender, getting some excellent intercepts and consistently putting pressure on her opponent. Our vice captain Chloe is a versatile player proving skilled in both offence and defense. Chloe was a great back-up in defense when our offence were under pressure and consistent in offence with her strong passing and quick thinking play. We were lucky to have some great height in our defense with one of our four kiwi’s in the team Rochelle. With her long arms and legs Rochelle was a weapon in the goal circle, not much got past her! Rochelle only missed one game all season and even though being right on time for a game wasn’t quite her forte she always played her best. Much the same for our quick paced and passionate Kaitlyn, she always played well in any centre court position. Some great intercepts and thoughtful passing made Kaitlyn a valuable player for Wembley 11. Also in our mid-court was Shiona who never shied away from a challenge and kept a positive attitude at all times. Shiona was a strong player and a great attribute to our team and we always loved her facebook updates! The quiet achiever of the team, Karen performed well under pressure, getting some great goals and rebounds. Karen always made strong leads and even if she was seen and not heard she always tried again with even more effort. Well done Karen on a great season! Also in our goal circle was Nikki, a passionate netballer with her height and strong leads she proved beneficial in the goal circle. Nikki is an excellent shooter who was not afraid to call for and contest the ball chasing most of her rebounds and getting them too! Jo was our reliable shooter, who positioned herself well and quickly gained a reputation for some awesome goals from the edge of the circle. Jo always played well with whomever in the goal circle and was consistently moving and re-offering. Since her late entry into the team, Bridget had a strong court presence and her positive nature was certainly missed when she was unable to play. Unfortunately Bridget was injured at training towards the end of the season, but returned just in time for the final showdown! Well done to our entire team and coaches on a fantastic season!! We have shown great dedication to training and the post-match/posttraining drinks at the Wembley this season. Wembley 12 has had an amazing season this year, suffering only one defeat (which we won’t count as half of our team was away!). Getting into the finals has been a great accomplishment for the team. WELL DONE WEMBLEY 12 – this season has been sweet as bro! A special thank you goes to our amazing coaches Channy and Kate - we wouldn’t be in the finals without your hard work and dedication! Also, a big thank you to Jasmine Rothery for being our “super sub” during the finals! Linzi: Our awesome defender Linzi or Zee as she is affectionately known is the energizer bunny of the team. She goes in hard and gives 110% each and every week, even when she forgets to bring her shoes to training. She now joins the very elite “forgotten my shoes” club of which Anna and Shannon are founding members. She is also a member of the “forgotten to shave” club of which Shannon is CEO. Zee tallies countless numbers of tips and intercepts every game, and even manages to out-reach her taller opponents on many occasions. She’s a great team mate and a pleasure to have on the team. Annika: Annika has been an invaluable team player this year showing her off her strong mid court skills zipping around the court and pushing herself to grab the intercepts. Size doesn't seem to bother Annika and she has shown this off when we played our toughest competition - the Royals, by ripping it up the court and assisting to turn over the intercepts. Whether it be the attack or defensive skills she shows off, we are glad to have her! Sarah: Sarah is the captain of our team I’m glad she’s part of Wembley 13. Nicest girl you’ll ever meet At least she wears socks on her feet. She can play any position Runs rings around the competition. She may be a kiwi throw back But she is one hell of a goal attack! Anna: Anna McCracken, our superstar shooter! Never misses a goal, No chance for the opposition, Anna's on a roll! Making defenders go crazy, Catch her if you can, she's not lazy! Chasing leads, she's lightening quick, Rebounds are the specialty of this chick. Awesome pep talks and lots of cheers, Carries our team to a win and after-game beers, Keeping us focussed on our game, Everyone agrees her nights out at Hip-E aren't tame! Now for the end of this rhyme, Wembley 12 without Anna would not be the same! Nic: We have a sweet player Nic Who can run real quick She gets a cheeky intercept And hardly ever has a step With her amazing eyes She is a star for the pies. Shannon: Even though half of the games Shannon turned up hungover, she still put her all in and dominated her opponents with her feisty attitude. She was a saviour to the defenders: when we got pulled for contact outside the shooting circle, Shan would go offside and defend so we could get let back in (much to the disgust of Gremlin). Shan has made this season a lot of fun and full of laughs. Danni: This was an awesome season for Danni to join some of us girls from last year. She fitted right in and bought with her; long arms, huge jumps, awesome defensive skills and even the ability to shoot. Danni is not only a stunner and a sweet heart but she is a team player, who was always supportive and keen to party. Thanks for all your effort Danni! Suz: Suz was incredible in defense this season - she was able to intercept many of the opponent’s passes and turn them into Wembley goals! Suz was one of the tallest members of Wembley 12 this year and was an asset in the defending circle – especially against the massive Royal shooters! Suz always brings her positive attitude and an infectious giggle to every game which makes her an absolute pleasure to play with. Mel: Mel was a force to be reckoned with in the shooting circle this year. She is always a consistent shooter and if she doesn’t nail it, she will be straight under the goal to grab the rebound. Mel always gives 110% in both defence and attack and often get a cheeky intercept off the opponents centre pass. Well done Mel on an incredible season. We will all miss you in the finals- Ciao! Channy and Kate: Our lovely coaches Channy and Kate have done a brilliant job getting us to the finals this season. We have become an even better team this year thanks to their unwavering encouragement and amazing coaching skills. You guys were always more nervous than us before the games which we thought was very cute. THANK YOU both for your time and commitment this year – we all really appreciate it! P.S. Two very strong teams were moved down to our division part way through the season. After beating both teams we proved that we were one of the dominant forces in our division. Liz and VT were such amazing coaches and brought a lot of knowledge to the table! Thank you for all your motivation and support Team member Jo Position(s) GS Michelle GS,GA,C Jasmin (Vice Captain) GA,GS Marie WA, C Jo was our amazing English shooter! Her tactic was to lull the opposition into a false sense of security with her timidity then play with such audacity that their defence was totally thrown! Jo's awesomely colour-coordinated gloves gave the impression that her hands were magnetically attracted to the ball & by mid-season, she was getting tricky passes left, right & centre. Jo's shooting ability developed exponentially throughout the season & it was with dismay that the team [especially those having to fill her shoes] regarded her back playing up, meaning she had to sit out for a couple of games. To our relief, Jo came back fighting for the semi-final with West Coasters & the team was once again complete! Jo is such a lovely person & this, added to her impressive shooting skills, meant she was so much fun to have on Wembley 13! Michelle is one of our shooters who joined the team at the end of the pre-season. She rotates between playing GS and GA, as well as occasionally a quarter of C. Michelle is very fast on her feet although she rarely gets pulled up by the umpires and often confuses the opposition with her fake passes! Michelle has improved over the season with her movement and teamwork within the ring in partnership with Jasmin and Jo. She is excellent with her shooting and her long shots have been exciting to watch! A key shooter interchanging between GS and GA throughout the season. Jasmin's accuracy & speed underneath the goals were indispensable for each game played. Jasmin's ability in moving around the circle in order to gain better positioning improved with each game and training with effort and concentration on her part. Always able to give good advice for defensive strategy. Jasmin was an integral member for Wembley 13 and demonstrated this by very rarely missing a pint at the Wembley after the game. Marie improved her skills with each game she played. As WA she worked perfectly as a team with C, GA, and GS . Her passing was great as she kept eye contact at all times. Marie had a big fall and ended up with a bad scratch on her left shoulder while we were playing UWA. She just stood up and kept playing on.. WOW.. how brave and awesome is she : D She encouraged the team all the time and was there for every game during the whole season :D She also interpreted for Michelle when she didn't understand. Kirsten (Captain) C,WA Mel GD,WD Alison WD,GD Tina Liz GD,GK,WD GK,GD Kirsten was the captain of Wembley 13 this year; she also played Centre and WA on court. Not only have her skills on court been outstanding, but her commitment to training and dedication as captain has encouraged the team considerably and helped secure victory after victory for Wembley 13 this year. Her captaincy skills were especially put to the test this season during a memorable (and rather aggressive) game against Westcoasters, when she had to contend with Westcoasters’ most feisty player AND somehow manage to keep the team focused (largely by restraining them). Following her example, and an inspiring pep talk, Wembley 13 were able to walk away with a victory (and no broken noses). The team could not have asked for a more dedicated and motivating Captain. Mel is a great defensive player and made a real effort throughout the season to improve and acquire new skills that she could use on court. Her long arms were a force to be reckoned with and she managed to get a ton of intercepts in nearly every game! For her first season at Wembley Alison was a good, fun and crazy member of Wembley 13. Part of ‘The Defence Team’ and could have been nominated for Princess Tool of the Week a couple of times. Number one ‘on and off’ court for her cheering and game motivation! Tina Van Malsen, defense and all round netball enthusiast, She Is always there to support the team both off and on the court. Never gives up and always impresses us with her long arms, Amazing holds, spectacular intercepts, dedication & skill. Go Tina! Liz played GK (that’s Goal Keeper, not Great-time Keeper). Despite being constantly late to coincidentally miss almost every warm up she did improve; or to be truthful her ability to play netball with a hangover improved. So we’re pretty sure Liz was the team’s most consistent player; missing warm-ups, always up for a drink and most noteworthy, “working late” for training sessions in the rain. BUT as Liz did point out, her best games were the ones where she missed the warm up and was a little hung-over!?! Liz Harrison, Wembley 13’s answer to Ben Cousins. I am an athlete. I am an individual. I am strong. I am weak. I have desires, hopes, and dreams. I have goals. I have fears. As a team my opponent will never see my weaknesses. Only my strength, never my fears, only my goals as they unfold before them. I am not afraid that my team will see my fears, my hopes, dreams, or desires. I trust them to an unlimited level. I am not afraid that my team will see my faults, because With them I can overcome my faults, with them I am fearless, with them I have hopes and dreams. With my team I am not weak, I do not have the strength of one athlete, but of many, combined, focused, And dangerous to my un-united opponent. I become my team and my team becomes me. I do not judge, and I am not judged. I have a goal, and the team has a goal. The team goal is my goal. All that matters is that the team reaches its goal. They always told me there is no “I” in “Team”. They were wrong. I am the team. I became the team. The team became me. The team becomes an entity unto itself. The team is strong, creative, compassionate, caring, Authoritative, disciplined. The team absorbs “I”, and then there is “I” in “Team”. The “I” becomes part of something much more powerful. They were right there is no “I” in “Team”, But there is “Team” in me.
