RACING REVIEW > ARABIANS > QATAR ARABIAN WORLD CUP By Véroniq ue Briat A look back at the Qatar Arabian World Cup Inaugurated in 2008, the Qatar Arabian World Cup is now a recognised highlight of the worldwide Arabian racing calendar. In 2012, the prize money of this prestigious race has been boosted from €500,000 to €700,000 by Qatar. It was a clean sweep of top five places by Qatar in the Qatar Arabian World Cup (Gr.1 PA) on Arc Day, where 52,000 enthusiasts turned out to enjoy the most prestigious meeting in Europe. Twenty horses lined up for the contest, they came from as far afield as the USA, Turkey and of course Qatar, eleven among them had previously won at Group 1 level. Trainer Julian Smart took the top two slots for owner/breeder HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Thani at Longchamp, with Alban de Mieulle taking third slot. Supplemented for the race by her connections, Mkeefa (Amer), a fouryear-old filly, was in a class of her own when winning by four lengths clear of stable companion Rathowan (Amer). Only two weeks before, she had won the Hatta International Stakes (Gr.1 PA) at Newbury, Rathowan himself 44 PART 1 had won a conditions race on the same card. Tabarak (Nizam), winner of the Doha Cup - Prix Manganate (Gr.1 PA) at Deauville in August (in front of Mkeefa and Rathowan), was back in third for trainer Alban de Mieulle and owner HH Sheikh Abdullah bin Khalifa Al Thani. Al Mamun Monlau (Munjiz), the 2011 highest rated three-year-old, finished a creditable fourth for trainer Jean-François Bernard and owner HH Sheikh Joaan bin Hamad Al Thani. Areej (Amer), In 2012, the prize money of this prestigious race has been boosted from €500,000 to €700,000 by Qatar. last year’s winner, was a huge disappointment, finishing unplaced a long way down the field, she had finished two lengths behind Mkeefa in third position at Newbury two weeks earlier. The first four home were all four-year-olds which augurs well for the future n MKEEFA winning the Qatar Arabian World Cup (Gr.1 PA) by four lengths Group 1 success abroad for French bred horses RACING REVIEW > ARABIANS > ARC WEEKEND By Véroniq ue Briat Success for French bred horses during the Arc weekend Trainer Arnaud Chaillé-Chaillé saddled the first two home at Longchamp in the Qatar Total Arabian Trophy des Juments (Gr.1 PA) for owner/breeder M. Faiz Al Elweet. It was Al Moutawakila (Al Sakbe) who came out on top stable companion Al Saklawiya (Al Sakbe), Sifflet Al Maury (Akbar) finished back in third for trainer Jean-François Bernard who had five in the race. Arnaud Chaillé-Chaillé was confident the two fillies would appreciate some cut in the ground, which they certainly had. Djainka des Forges (Kerbella) proved a shock winner of the Qatar Arabian Trophy des Pouliches (Gr.1 PA) at Saint-Cloud for trainer Julian Smart and owner HH Sheikh Mohammed bin Khalifa Al Thani, when beating Waahiba (Akbar) and Al Anga (Amer). Still a maiden, she showed a huge improvement on her previous race where she was beaten twelve lengths by Manark (Mahabb) in a Group 2 at Newbury two weeks before. She clearly appreciated the step-up in trip. The Qatar Total Arabian Trophy des Poulains (Gr.1 PA) went to the favourite Mushrae (Munjiz), for owner/breeder HH Sheikh Mansoor bin Zayed Al Nahyan and trainer Jean-Pierre Totain. An unlucky second at Deauville when his jockey lost his whip at the furlong marker, he came into It was another good year for French bred Arabians abroad, with six Group 1 wins in 2012. It is important to point out that these four Listed races were entirely financed by AFAC in 2012, they are worth €45,000 each in prize money and are a sort of finale to the French Arabian racing season. Finally, should the level of the horses running in them be the same next year, these races should hopefully be upgraded to Group status in 2014. SAHLAMBO winning the French Arabian Breeders’ Challenge Sprint at Toulouse GHARRAA (grey) winning the French Arabian Breeders’ Challenge Classic by a neck in front of GHALIB French Arabian Breeders’ Challenge Classic French Arabian Breeders’ Challenge Sprint Gharraa keeps the race for the second year running Sahlambo in front of Hilal Al Zaman She had been looking for a race to win all season. Patiently ridden by her jockey Jean-Baptiste Hamel at the rear of the field, Gharraa (Matador 12) finished in front of Ghalib (Munjiz) after a thrilling battle, one neck separated the first two. No Problem Al Maury (Dormane) was back in third. Gharraa finished second to Sahlambo (winner of the Sprint race on the card that night) in the Critérium des Pouliches (Gr.2 PA) at La Teste. Narrowly beaten in this same race last year, Hilal Al Zaman (Mencour), a dual Group 1 winner abroad this autumn, could not go past Sahlambo (Munjiz), who tracked him most of the race to go in front one furlong out. Awam (Munjiz) was back in third after leading most of the race. A nice end to her season after winning the Critérium des Pouliches (Gr.2 PA) and the Prix Nevadour (Gr.3 PA) in 2012. These four Listed races were entirely financed by AFAC in 2012. 48 PART 1 RACING REVIEW > ARABIANS In 2012, they were 83 races in France for pure-bred Arabians, for over two and a half Million euros in prize money (an increase of €500,000 from 2011). VAHESS DU CROATE, a promising filly, here winning the French Arabian Breeders’ Challenge 3YO Fillies French Arabian Breeders’ Challenge 3YO Fillies Vahess du Croate confirms Under the colors of her new owner the Royal Cavalry of Oman, Vahess du Croate (Dahess) finished first, with Myra de Monlau (Munjiz), under the same ownership, back in second RODESS ends his season by a win in the French Arabian Breeders’ Challenge 3YO Colts and Geldings at Toulouse place. Vahess du Croate won the Prix Nevada II (Gr.2 PA) back in September at Bordeaux in front of Myra de Monlau who had beat her earlier in July in the Prix Razzia III (Gr.3 PA) at La Teste. These two fillies were meeting for the third time. French Arabian Breeders’ Challenge 3YO Colts and Geldings Rodess likes Toulouse A winner for his first race here in Toulouse, Rodess (Dahess) finished third in the Prix Tidjani (Gr.3 PA) in La Teste on 22nd of July but wasn’t seen again until that day. He showed a nice turn of foot to finish in front of Nhir (Kerbella) and Djet Taouy (Dahess), both respectively fourth and fifth in The Qatar Arabian Trophy des Poulains (Gr.1 PA) earlier ARABIAN RACING > BREEDERS’ CHALLENGE that month. Manark (Mahabb) the hot favorite, having won the Emirates Equestrian International Stakes (Gr.2 PA) at Newbury a month before, could only manage fourth place, never settling in the race. Like last year, AFAC held a cocktail party after racing for its members, which featured a draw to win free nominations for the 2013 season. The aim is to make this day an important fixture in the calendar for all breeders, owners and trainers of pure-bred Arabians in France. The free nominations were generously donated by Shadwell (Madjani and No Risk Al Maury), Nasser Abdulla Al Attiyah (Akim de Ducor), France Haras (Kerbella), Jean-Pierre Deroubaix (Dahess), Hassan Mousli (Azadi), Guy Dell’Ova (Samir de Carrere), Jean-Luc Jardel (Tornado De Syrah) and Yves Plantin (Njewman) n PART 1 49 STALLION FOCUS > ARABIANS > STALLION FOCUS By Véroniq ue Briat Dahess leading sire of three-year-olds in 2012 Dahess (Amer) was bought at ARQANA in 2007 for a record €1,050,000 euros by the company Mayodor. He is out of Danie du Cassou, the dam of Bibi de Carrère (champion sire in the UAE). A winner in six different countries, he won thirteen Group 1 races for over one million euros in prize money. Among his fourteen runners in 2012, the colt Dahor de Brugère and the filly Vahess du Croate were the two stars of his first crop. Dahor de Brugère was unbeaten in four starts winning two Group 1 races : the Qatar Coupe de France des Chevaux Arabes at Chantilly and the Al Rayyan Cup - Prix Kesberoy at Deauville. Sadly he sustained an injury after Deauville and was not seen on a racecourse after. Vahess du Croate won the Prix Nevada II (Gr.2 PA) and finished her season by winning the Listed French Arabian Breeders’ Challenge for three-year-old Fillies in Toulouse. On the same day Rodess won the equivalent race for three-yearold Colts and Geldings. Djebelia Al Mels was also one to note this season, she won the Prix Ourour in Toulouse and finished second to Dahor de Brugère in the Qatar Coupe de France des Chevaux Arabes (Gr.1 PA). All this was enough to secure Dahess the title of leading sire of three-yearolds in France in 2012. In Qatar, Dahess is the sire of Insaf winner of the Qatar International Derby (Gr.2 PA). He is also the sire of Samima, a dual winner abroad, who finished second to PART 1 Manark in the Emirates Equestrian International Stakes (Gr.2 PA) at Newbury. Munjiz, leading sire of three-year-olds in 2011, finished second in the stallion rankings, with Mushrae and Myra de Monlau his two main horses. Mushrae finished a close second to Dahor de Brugère in the Al Rayyan Cup - Prix Kesberoy (Gr.1 PA) and won the Qatar Total Arabian Trophy des Poulains (Gr.1 PA) at Saint-Cloud.
