POINTS OF EXCELLENCE
u
u
F
redonia is consistently a top performer among four-year graduation
rate comparisons, thanks in part to its “Fredonia in 4” program. This
guarantees a student’s access to classes to graduate in four years – or
Fredonia pays for the remaining courses. Together, we help you stay
on track to make sure you manage your course load, major requirements, and financial commitments.
Fredonia is regularly ranked near the top of the public master’s-granting
universities in the North (among more than 180 universities) by U.S.
News & World Report in its annual “America’s Best Colleges” issue, and
has been repeatedly recognized for its strong freshmen retention rates.
u
Fredonia has consistently been selected by Kiplinger’s Personal Finance
magazine as one of the 100 best values in public higher education in
the U.S. for both in-state and out-of-state students.
u
Fredonia is perennially ranked among the best colleges and universi-
ties in the Northeast by The Princeton Review.
THE FREDONIA DIFFERENCE
At Fredonia, you become part of a community of scholars and artists living,
working, and learning together. You get to know your professors and fellow
students well and have many opportunities to contribute your perspectives
and questions about the subjects you’re exploring. You become knowledgeable about current developments in your field of study, including the
technology that is critical to discovery, communication, and research.
Fredonia professors are passionate about teaching. Whether they’re in
the classroom, on the stage, or in the field, our faculty help you succeed.
Many have been recognized for their innovation and excellence at the state,
national, and global level. They are also involved in research and creative
activity, and you’ll find they are eager to have you collaborate.
Academic excellence relies on diversity – of backgrounds, perspectives,
and ideas – and at Fredonia, you join a multicultural campus that offers
opportunities to meet, learn from, and live with people from many different
backgrounds. In classes, residence halls, student-run clubs, and campus
events, you can share your opinions and learn about those of others. Your
classes challenge you to think globally, and you can study abroad in a
wide range of countries, learning first-hand about international issues.
Fredonia is also committed to helping you reach your goal: graduation.
From knowledgeable advisors to the campus’ “Fredonia in Four” four-year
graduation guarantee, every member of the faculty and staff stands ready
to make sure you can meet your goals – and manage your finances.

A new set of courses are now offered in international entrepreneurship.
Your School of Business experience – regardless of major – includes
strong components in ethics, global-cultural awareness, technology,
critical thinking, and leadership.
You will work closely with faculty who are engaged in discipline-specific,
professional, and instructional research. You’ll have opportunities for
research, internships, and student competitions. You can also join clubs and
organizations, including Fredonia’s perennial award-winning Enactus team,
as well as the Economics Club, Business Club, and Accounting Society.
You can strive for membership in the campus chapter of Delta Mu Delta
(a national honor society in business), the Financial Management Association National Honor Society, or the American Marketing Association.
These groups supplement your education by helping to develop professional skills that you will use throughout your life.
Students have gained internships with such respected companies as General Electric, American Express, Walt Disney World, Fisher Price, the Buffalo
Sabres, the Atlanta Braves, Merrill Lynch, Wegmans, Paychex, Radio City
Music Hall, the Buffalo Philharmonic Orchestra, and Country Music Television, as well as many of the region’s largest media groups, accounting
firms, and marketing agencies.
The School of Business also provides opportunities to work in teams on
projects with global corporations, local businesses, non-profit organizations, and adventurous entrepreneurs leading start-up companies in the
Fredonia Technology Incubator.

EDUCATION
If you have the passion to teach, Fredonia’s nationally accredited teacher
preparation programs develop the knowledge, skills, and experience you
need. Since its founding as the Fredonia Academy in 1826, this institution has
earned a reputation for preparing outstanding teachers. You can choose from
a range of programs, all leading to New York State certification.
You can earn certification in Early Childhood (Birth-Grade 2), Childhood
Education (Grades 1-6), and Students with Disabilities (Grades 1-6). Dual
certification programs give you skills and credentials highly sought after by
school districts across the U.S. You can be certified in both Early Childhood
and Childhood Education through the dual certification program, and the
Childhood Inclusive Education program certifies you in both Childhood
Education and Students with Disabilities.
If you’re interested in teaching grades 7 to 12, you can choose from Adolescence Education programs in Biology, Chemistry, Earth Sciences, English,
French, Mathematics, Physics, Social Studies, and Spanish. Each ensures that
you know your subject well and know how to teach effectively, and each collaborates with the College of Education, which oversees all programs leading
to teacher certification.
You’ll also have plenty of practice before graduation. You begin field experiences your first year, and continue to work with elementary, middle, and high
school students throughout your program. You also complete a series of fieldbased experiences in schools, taught in conjunction with a course to connect
educational theory and practice. Student teaching gives you a chance to work
with a group of students over an extended period and put what you’ve learned
into practice. Placements are available across much of New York State.

“My experience in the sciences at Fredonia has been amazing. I have been given amazing
undergraduate research opportunities that have allowed me to help better understand —
and potentially even solve — the real-world issues which our faculty are exploring.
As an undergrad, I worked on a collaboration between a Biology professor and a
Chemistry professor which could help researchers better understand new modes of
alternative energy in the form of biofuels. Now, as a graduate student, I’m working to
understand a developmental pathway in fruit flies, which can help researchers better
understand certain human cancers.”

ATHLETICS
When you become part of a Fredonia
team, you work with highly respected
coaches and staff who have produced
over 120 collegiate All-Americans (including several national
champions) and many team championships at the division,
conference, and regional level.
Opportunities to participate in sporting activities abound at
Fredonia. The university fields 19 intercollegiate teams and each is
exciting for both athletes and spectators. A member of the State
University of New York Athletic Conference (SUNYAC), Fredonia
gives talented athletes the challenge of highly competitive
conference and non-conference opponents. And if you’re interested
in simply learning a sport or engaging in friendly competition, you
can choose from many intramural and club activities.

SAFE, FUN,

PLACE TO WALK, EAT, SHOP, AND SOCIALIZE.
THE REGION
40
You’ll love venturing into the village of Fredonia and exploring Chautauqua County, Lake Erie’s shores, and beyond. The region, home to
Chautauqua Institution, the Lucille Ball Comedy Festival, and the Roger
Tory Peterson Institute of Natural History, is 90 minutes from Niagara
Falls and a vacation destination for fans of cultural activities and
seasonal recreation.
The village of Fredonia is a safe, fun, and charming place to walk, eat,
shop, and socialize. In addition to festivals that bring art, music, and food
downtown, you’ll enjoy everyday life in this historic, tree-lined community
noted for its Victorian-era homes. You can taste the specialties of a
range of locally owned restaurants, bakeries, pubs, and pizza shops. You
can see a film or enjoy a concert at the beautifully restored 1891 Fredonia
Opera House. Barker Commons has two fountains, a gazebo, and plenty
of benches for hanging out with friends (and eating ice cream). The
village is within walking distance of campus, and a special late-night
shuttle makes it even easier to get to and from popular night spots
safely. The shuttle also runs to shopping plazas, grocery and retail stores,
banks, and a movie theatre complex.
