BV CSD TRANSFER STATION RULES
Operating procedures at the Bear Valley transfer station help
control costs and keep rates down. The premises are monitored
by surveillance cameras – so if a violation is reported, staff can
verify the complaint. Let’s take a look at the rules:
1. Only vehicles displaying a BVCSD windshield decals are
permitted within the solid waste transfer station.
2. No hazardous materials are accepted. Batteries, oil and other
hazardous materials must be disposed of at the Kern County
Special Waste Facility (862-8922).
3. No waste from construction or demolition is accepted.
Commercial vehicles carrying building materials are prohibited
from entering the solid waste transfer station.
4. All green waste, including horse manure is to be placed north
of the fence. No building materials are accepted in this area either.
5. Fireplace ashes are to be placed only in marked cans.
6. No plastic bags, household trash or concrete is to be dumped
in the green waste area.
Remember the district does not have permitting for paint, oil,
appliances, fuels, batteries, tires, chemicals or furniture. Our
transfer station is designed for household trash to be picked up
from our central location.
HOMEOWNER INSURANCE
DISASTER PREPAREDNESS
If you think hurricanes, wildfires, tornadoes and floods won’t
happen to you or that you don’t need to insure against these
disasters, you’re among the nearly half of U.S. homeowners and
renters who lack the insurance coverage to deal with potential
losses, according to the National Association of Insurance
Commissioners (NAIC).
In a recent NAIC national survey, about 48 percent of
homeowners and renters said they did not have an inventory of
their possessions. Of those who reported having a checklist,
32 percent had not taken any pictures and 58 percent had no
receipts validating the cost of their possessions. In addition,
44 percent of respondents acknowledged that they had not
stored their inventory in a separate location.
Here are some tips from the NAIC to help you prepare for
disasters:
1. Take an inventory of your valuables and belongings. This
should include taking photographs or a video of each room. This
documentation will provide your insurance company with proof of
your belongings and help to process claims more quickly in the
event of disaster.
2. To enable filing claims more quickly, keep sales receipts and
canceled checks. Also note the model and serial numbers of the
items in your home inventory.

Mornings at Sierra Vista:
Mornings are my favorite time to visit with the
ladies while we are all at the table. We talked a
little about life's important things when they grew
up some 80 to 90 years ago. Things that were of
concern were how long their one pair of shoes
would last, if their socks would be dry after walking
through snow to get to school in the mid-west, if the
bath water would still be warm when it was their turn
to hop in the slightly used bath water, if they would
have a little meat for dinner and if their father could
find work. How things have changed. We talked
while they were having breakfast burritos and
monkey bread, fresh berries and pineapple. (I didn't
realize the monkey bread took 14 hours to prepare
but it was worth the wait.)
We have been sitting out in the evenings and
right as it’s getting dark, we saw a herd of deer, a
pack of seven coyotes (down San Juan near Oak
Flat), about ten elk lounging under the oak trees,
and of course, a few horses with riders.
How about the moths; they were everywhere for
a while. We don't like to use bug spray especially
in the house, but a good deterrent is to hang a
perforated muslin bag filled with lavender and
added lavender oil.
Want to slow the development of Alzheimer's
disease? Daily coconut oil is rich in medium-chain
triglycerides that help to keep the brain from deteriorating. This is being researched so get a head start;
it can't hurt as there are a multitude of benefits.
How do you like this monkey bread?

BVS VETERANS ASSOCIATION
Jed Hannan, BVS – VA Secretary
Our unit had a great July 4th. We marched in the parade and
member Henry Martinez, WW II Battle of the Bulge Veteran, was
honored as the Grand Marshall. We participated in the Flag
Ceremony, Jim Carmichael played the bagpipes, Richard Oldenburg bugled ‘Attention to the Colors’ and ‘Taps’, Rick Zannuto was
MC, Debbie Martin sang our National Anthem, Vinnie Apicella and
Al Dameron delivered a Rifle Salute. Our booth was very successful in raising funds for Veterans in Need, and was presented an
award for Best Patriotic Decorations by Debbie Papac.
At our July meeting, Barbara Barnett and Michael McCurdy of
the Bob Hope Hollywood USO at LAX spoke about the facility
there; last year they served 72,000 servicemen and women
passing through. Barbara is also the Director of Families of the
Fallen, they provide comfort and services to families whose
warrior heroes are being returned for internments in the area.
All Bear Valley Springs Veterans who served honorably, with a
valid DD-214 are invited to join. Meetings are the 2nd Tuesday at
the Equestrian Center Recreation Room 6:30 pm. Next meeting
will be August 11.

MESSAGE FROM BOARD OF DIRECTORS
Bear Valley Community Services District
The California Condor in Bear Valley
Over the last few years, we have had the opportunity to view
the California Condor here in BVS. For many of us, sighting the
largest flying North American bird is a rare, and even once-in-alifetime privilege. Unfortunately for a few, the bird’s presence
results in damage to their homes: Most of us have read the news
articles that even made Fox News in 2013. Whatever your point
of view, it’s hard to argue that a California Condor soaring above
is not a magnificent sight.
A few condor facts:
With a wingspan of 10 feet, and weighing up to 35 pounds, The
California Condor is the largest flying bird in North America,
The condor feeds on carrion and has a beak strong enough to
tear through the hide of the largest big game animals. The condor
has an enormous range, can soar at nearly 15,000 feet, and often
travels more than 100 miles in a day in its search for food. Often
condors can be seen soaring above Bear Valley Springs with
large groups of turkey vultures. They can be identified by their
large size, (twice the size of most), and the white on the undersides of their wings.
Condors were listed as extinct in the wild in the 1980’s;
however a captive breeding program has met with some success
and numbers in the wild are now about 170 individuals. Of the
wild population, about 70 reside in California, and another 100 in
the Grand Canyon area of Arizona. To put this in perspective, is
has not been unusual to witness one tenth of the world’s wild
population of California Condors right here in Bear Valley.
As of late, condors have been successfully breeding in the
wild. Condors typically mate for life and can live up to 60 years.
The recovery of the California Condor has been a challenge for
State and Federal Fish and Wildlife officials, due to the usual
reasons: loss of habitat and conflicts with humans. Lead
poisoning from feeding on animal carcasses that have been shot
with lead bullets is a major cause of condor mortality. As a result,
the use of lead ammunition has been banned for hunting in our
area. (It is still OK to use lead ammo at the range, but illegal to
have it in possession while afield.)
Fossil records and accounts of early explorers indicate that
condors once ranged across the entirety of the United States,
relying on the vast herds of buffalo for sustenance. The “Thunder
Bird” of Native American myth may actually have been the
California Condor. Bear Valley’s abundance of big game animals,
such as elk and deer, along with favorable thermals air currents,
are certainly a factor in the presence of condors.
In any event, California Condors remain critically endangered
and are fully protected by Federal and State law. There are stiff
fines for harming or harassing condors, including jail time. In
other words, don’t even look at them cross-eyed. Approaching a
condor too closely, even with good intentions, can be considered
harassment. Most of us appreciate the un-paralleled wildlife in
our area, and we accepted the inconveniences that animals can
cause when we moved to BVS. However, there has been some
property damage attributed to condors that few would have
expected. If this occurs at your residence, there are “approved”
methods of discouraging condors from using your property;
however, to avoid any misinterpretations, they are not reprinted
here. In these cases, the Board suggests the property owner
contact the California State Fish & Wildlife Department for
recommendations. Meanwhile, try to enjoy and tolerate not only
condors, but all of our native wildlife. Future articles will include
recommendations for avoiding negative interactions with wildlife.
CSD Board of Directors: President Charlene LaClaire;
Vice President Rick Zanutto; Director Jane Baron;
Director Gil Grace; and Director Walt Ritchie.

SPORTSMAN’S CLUB
Kay Bryant, BVSA Resident
Tehachapi, Inc.
Just when you think you can take a
breather with the Sportsman’s Club
activities, there’s way more coming up.
Have I mentioned lately that your
membership fee of $30 per person ($60
per family) more than covers the food at
some of our activities: Deep Pit BBQ (food
& beverages free to members), Toys 4
Tehachapi Children (free appetizers to
members) and sometimes, depending on
the number of members, it covers one other
event. New friendships are being created at
every activity we do. So, now is the BEST
time to join while these activities are still yet to
happen.
AUGUST 1 - DINNER GOLF TOURNAMENT
The Sportsman’s Club Golf/Dinner Tournament
will include a catered dinner at Four Island Lake.
Woohoo! Non-golfers are welcome to come
just for dinner. The format will, once
again, be a four-ball scramble, and will be
handicapped. 50/50 tickets, Mulligans, and Magic Putts
will be offered at the check-in tables. Shot-Gun start at 11:00 am.
Registration begins at 10 am. Hot dogs will be served adjacent to
the 3rd green, along with beverages. A beverage cart will make
its round during the tournament to keep competitors hydrated.
Oak Tree CC will cater this soiree with tri-tip and BBQ chicken,
succulent baked beans and mouth watering potato salad. Beer,
wine, sodas, water and free margaritas will be available to slake
the thirst of the parched.
Awards for superior play will be presented at the dinner.
Longest drive, closest to the pin, and closest to the line will be
honored for their luck (hmmmm) skill, that is. Tickets will be
drawn for 50/50 winners and other cash prizes. Noteworthy
individuals will be honored with fabulous re-purposed trophies in
a variety of eclectic categories, some even golf-related. Entry fee
for this swell event is $43 (including golf cart) and $34 for those
with private carts. The price for dinner and libations only is $16.
A heck of a deal!
This event is, with regret, open to all comers. We just don’t
have enough Sportsman’s golfers to fill the field and a larger field
is preferable. Sign up in the Pro Shop as a single, double or
foursome. Handicaps will be assigned for those who do not have
SCGA handicaps.
SPORTSMAN’S CLUB MONTHLY MEETING
Thursday, August 20, 6:30-7:30 at OTCC Card Room. We’ve
been having lots of new members attending the meetings and
participating in the activities. Remember, this is the LAST BEST
time to join so you get all the fabulous food and beverages for free
at the Deep Pit BBQ.
DEEP PIT BBQ
Saturday, August 29. Hooray! Our biggest event of the year.
Of course, you are coming, but have you volunteered to help with
the deep pit cooking, the bar, the food setup, the tear-down, the
tent setup, etc? We need an army of volunteers. THAT MEANS
YOU, SOMETIME. 4:00 Check-in time. Is your mouth watering
for all that slow cooked meat, plus all the sides and all the
beverages free to members? The cost for guest is $20 per adult,
$10 per children ages 12 and under, age 5 and under is free.
To volunteer, please call Alan and Angela (817) 675-4334.
SEPTEMBER 12 – SATURDAY – PROGRESSIVE DINNER
Cost will be $16 per member. 1st seating 4:30, 2nd seating 5:30.

If you have Bark Beetle infected trees,
please contact us for a free evaluation
To date, millions of acres of forests and billions of trees are
dead and there is no end in sight. Some estimates predict that
by 2016, 80% of the North American forests could be gone.
By removing all infected trees, you prevent spreading the
bark beetles, infestation and protect your healthy trees.

Here’s your opportunity to visit the restored Bear Valley School
House, our community’s only museum. Inside are photographs
and displays associated with the early settlers and the Fickert
family, who owned most of Bear Valley before it was developed.
The schoolhouse will be open Saturday, August 1, Saturday,
September 5, and Sunday, September 6, from 12-3 pm. Visitors
can learn about the history of Bear Valley and the only one room
schoolhouse left in the area. The school has been moved several
times since it was built in 1872. The last move, from the Fickert
Ranch headquarters on Bear Valley Road to its present location,
occurred when Dart Industries began developing Bear Valley
Springs.
When renovation was started, a professional restoration
specialist was contacted and his advice was incorporated into the
plans for the preservation of the School House. Renovation was
completed in the Fall, 2007. Visitors will learn some interesting
facts such as the door handles of the front door of the Oak Tree
Country Club were custom made to represent the brand “88”
registered to Frederick Fickert and the Fickert Ranch.

3RD ANNUAL BVS FREEDOM BOAT PARADE
Kimberly Clow, Bear Valley Resident
Sam’s Liberty Paddle Boat
SS Minnie Minnow
The Bear Valley Springs celebration of 2015 Fourth of July …Hot Air balloons,
pancakes, BBQs, parades, friends, family, flags and fun! Great participants, creative
designs, colorful boats and cheering spectators along the shoreline made the 3rd
Annual Freedom Boat Parade a great success.
The Best Youth Trophy went to the Tomkinson children Sammy, Kennedy, Rhys
and Tyler on Sam’s Liberty Paddleboard which was decorated with red, white and
blue balloons on the mast and rigging. We had the SS Minnie Minnow from
Gilligan’s Island win the Best Dressed Trophy award. The Skipper was Mike
Havens. The Patriotic Award went to the Founding Father’s entry from the Bear
Valley Church, with the Statue of Liberty on the bow. America Rocks won the
Sweepstakes Trophy, with the Marks family rendition rocking out in the USA.
Other entries included the Ritchie children’s Uncle Sam 2.0 on their family’s
wooden handmade paddleboard. The Great Inflatable’s skipper Jeff Cole navigated
the boat as his dad, Doug Cole played patriotic songs on the clarinet. Other boats
included the Kannard family’s Star Spangled Cutie Patooti and the Stripes Sea
Hawks being crewed by the Crosby family all decked out in Red, White and Blue.
Captain America’s 1st Mate was a Portuguese Water dog, Leyna! Eric and Keely
Loe were back in their Freedom Afloat canoe again this year with patriotic rigging
and huge smiles.
Thanks to Val Beck, Kelly Zimmerman, Deb Kline-Classen and Katie Quinn who
did a great job with the judging of our Freedom Floats! Many Thanks to the Bear
Valley VIPs who worked the parking lot to safely allow the boat trailers access to
marina. BVS Ranger Jim Carmichael and the BVS Lifeguards, Matthew Peyton and
Taydin Macon, were on hand to be sure all of our boating participants and spectators
were safe.
We are fortunate to live in a great place to appreciate our country’s freedom!
God Bless America!

MAMA DEER GIVES BIRTH
Shirley Hornbeck
This mama decided to have her
twins in our yard early in the
morning of June 29.
I watched them being born from
my garage and they were about 3
hours old when I took this picture.
They are one week old today and
finally out of our yard. I closed the
gate when mama took them out for
a stroll on the horse trail behind our
house. The mama nearly destroyed
our yard as we watched - eating
everything in sight - even things
I didn't think deer ate - including
lilac bushes.

BVS CARRIAGE DRIVING SOCIETY
Dawn Wright, BVSCDS resident
t
It is always a privilege to participate in the Bear Valley 4th of
July parade. This year's spectator crowd is the largest I have ever
seen. Through the last ten years, the Carriage Club has supported
the largest equestrian entry in these parades. This year the
Carriage Club followed a group of Veterans. These Veterans
represented the soldiers who fought to keep our country free.
Some Veterans in wheelchairs turned out to honor our country.
One Veteran played a brass horn throughout the parade. The
tunes were from a military theme, like Taps. This was a very
moving touch, honoring this holiday.
The Carriage Club turned out in numbers. All of the carriages
were decorated in festive patriotic Red, White and Blue. Dennis
Keck led the Carriage Club. Dennis drives a spectacular black
mini, Dakota. Passengers in Dennis's four wheel oak wagon were
Olivia Bowen and Carrie Mittler. Following included Diane Person
driving Winnie; Jeanne Riesen driving Munchie; Margaret Paez
driving Catrina. Margaret's grandson, Chito was her passenger.
Jennifer Estrada walked Nova and I drove Sunny. Saddle horses
followed while Romelle Kemp carried our Country’s Flag.
The monthly Poker Play Days were a lot of fun. The first prize
was a Tractor Supply gift card. In May, Judy and Jim Walsh were
the big winners. In June, the winners were Romelle Kemp, Sally
Barton and Cordula Kretger. We look forward to the rest the
Porker Play Days.
These days, it is not politicaly correct to have a lush lawn. The
new look is a distressed landscape. There is an ad on TV that
says they can keep your lawns green for $8.50 a month. Somehow I think they are selling a bucket of green paint.
I am pleased to see that property owners are cutting down
their dead trees. Not only does this make your property look bad,
but they are a hugh fire risk. Dead trees pose a tremendous fire
threat and a cinder could ignite a dead tree like a torch and could
set your house on fire. This fire season is very dangerous. It takes
a huge amount of water to fight a fire.
Did you know that we have a new full-service Vet, Ellice Rubin.
She lives on Oak Flat. I have used her services recently and have
been very pleased. To reach Dr. Rubin, call 805-708-5022.
Enjoy Bear Valley, there is no other place like it.

Our trail challenge June 27 was fantastic. I was in awe of the
number of senior riders who were out there doing this difficult
course with their horses. I know one of them is 90!!!! Will I even
be able or willing to get on a horse at 90 let alone do an obstacle
course? That remains to be seen. But the love of horses and
riding is like a fever. I don’t know why some of us just love horses
and can’t wait to ride. We read young adult books like Black
Beauty and the Ponies of Chincoteague. I cannot forget the T.V
show Mr. Ed. I always thought he lived in Diamond Bar or maybe
Palos Verdes. Where else in Los Angeles can you have horses
and riding trails back in the 1960s?
I did find out that there are horses tucked away everywhere
down there. Santa Anita area has track homes with acreage in
the back. Unfortunately, you have to ride on the side of the
concrete rivers. I guess it’s better than nothing (but just barely).
We have to talk about Norco, the County island of horse people.
They allow 10 horses per acre there! Everyone has a horse in the
front or backyard and trails go through town and along the river.
They have tie up racks at the stores and trails right down
mainstreet. It is a very unique place. When the 15 freeway came’
it separated the town.
I think that is why many people have moved here to enjoy the
trails and the beauty. Whilr the trail crew works on the damage
from the summer rain storm, we have to be patient and wait for
our beautiful trails to be passable again. Even hiking is tough on
some of the trails at the moment. The trail crew is aware of the
damage and are working hard on fixing them.
Have a safe and happy summer.

Bear Valley Springs – what a special place we live! Our whole
community turns out for the Independence Day Celebration. It’s a
unique time to honor the values our country is founded on and the
people who fought for those rights.
The Fourth of July Committee wants to thank you for joining in
the celebration and making it the success was is. Thank you to
the Police, the CSD employees, The BVSA IGM staff, janitors and
maintenance crews, the Whiting Center and OTCC staff, the
Police VIPs and Explorers and all the volunteers. I want to
especially commend the 4th of July Committee for the great job
decorating, planning, the raffle and the Parade Committee for the
awesome parade!
Thank you for going beyond the call of duty: to those who
spent the night at the lakes and kept everything secure. Thanks to
all the Clubs and their members working to serve the community,
and also the vendors for joining us at the lake.
Above and beyond all the myriads of employees and committee members there are a few special people that need a special
word of appreciation. Our Parade Grand Marshall, Henry
Martinez, Debby Martin who sang the National Anthem , Richard
Olenburg who played Colors and Taps, Rick Zanutto the MC, and
Sky Martin who sang “I’m proud to be an American”. It was a
wonderful and touching Flag Ceremony because of these people.
The activities and food booths fund many of the activities in
BVS. The Pancake Breakfast funds the Men’s and Women’s Golf
Club activities and scholarships, and you’ll see results on the golf
course that you helped provide. The Sportsmen’s Club Hot Dog
Booth, The Gem and Mineral Society, and Women’s Club Bingo
also creates scholarships given to local graduates each year.
The 5K and the Classic Car show both generate money for The
Cancer Society-Relay for Life. Knights of Columbus also use
the money in our community. The Therapeutic Riders and the
Veterans Clubs are also examples that give back to our Community. Please forgive me if I’ve forgotten anyone; the point was
for you to know that besides enjoying the holiday with friends
and neighbors, you are also contributing to the enrichment of
Bear Valley!
If you enjoyed this event and want to participate next year,
please join us in planning this event. Next year will be our 25th
celebration here in Bear Valley Springs! Call the Whiting Center to
be added to the contact list.

SOCCER
This year’s soccer program increased to a
total of 122 kids. 54 kids with six teams in
the 6U (fundamental) division, 46 kids with
five teams in the 10U division, and 22 kids
with three teams in the 13U division.
I want to thank all the coaches for their
time and dedication. Without them we
wouldn’t have had the year we had.
In the 6U fundamental division, there is no win/loss records; it’s all
about teaching the kids how to play the game. I can truly say in
this division there are some talented players who will be a forced
to be reckoned with as they move up in the years to come.
While writing this article, the season had not concluded. I can say
with the talented kids in both the 10U and 13U divisions the
playoffs will be very exciting to watch.
BASKETBALL
Wow! It hard to believe basketball season is right around the
corner. Signups for Basketball started July 14 and will run
through August 19. Player evaluations are scheduled for
August 22. Opening night will be September 18th. League
ends November 20.
FIRECRACKER 5K RUN - SUPER STAR
For the last four years, the 5K run organization has been handled
by Keely Guidotti. Organizing this event isn’t just pick a course,
make up registration forms and take entry fees. There is so much
more that goes into it than one would imagine.
Starting in early May, Keely begins the daunting task of going
over her checklist: Meeting with the Police Department on road
closures; ordering the medals, going over the route map making
changes if needed; coordinates with IGM manager, Brandon
Haynes to make sure the course is safe and ready for the even;
designing and ordering T-Shirts for the participants; organizing
staff and volunteers for the signups, water stations, timers, and
board tenders and two days before the event packaging and
organizing correct T-shirt sizes with corresponding contestant
number for all pre-signups. To top it all off, she is the Master of
Ceremonies at the end of the race handing out awards. And when
it is all done she goes home and thinks about the next year’s 5K
route and a new design for the shirts.
For those who have competed and enjoyed the Firecracker 5K,
next time you she Keely give her a big thank you because she
does it all, not because she is the coordinator; she does it for
those who compete.

8. Keep a readily available list of 24-hour contact information for
each of your insurance providers.
9. Find out if your possessions are insured for the actual cash
value or the replacement cost. Actual cash value is the amount it
would take to repair or replace your home and possessions after
depreciation, while replacement cost is the amount it would take
to repair or replace your home or possessions without deducting
for depreciation. Speak with your insurance provider to determine
whether purchasing replacement coverage is worth the cost.
10. Speak with your insurance provider to find out if your policy
covers additional living expenses for a temporary residence if you
are unable to live in your home due to damage from a disaster.

3. As you acquire more valuables such as jewelry or antiques,
consider purchasing an additional floater or rider to your policy to
cover these special items. These types of items typically are not
covered by a basic homeowner’s or renter’s insurance policy.
4. Remember to include in your home inventory those items you
rarely use such as holiday decorations, sports equipment and
tools.
5. Store copies of all your insurance policies in a safe location
away from your home that is easily accessible in case of disaster.
You may want to store your policies and inventory in a waterproof,

box.
6. Consider leaving a copy of your inventory with relatives,
friends or your insurance provider and store digital pictures in your
email or on a website for easy retrieval.
7. Know what is and is not covered by your insurance policy. You
might need additional protection depending on where you live.
Make sure your policies are up to date. Contact your insurance
