All of us at HOME START are proud to be entering
our 44th year of providing essential child abuse
prevention services to families and children
throughout San Diego County.
Our mission is to assure the safety and resiliency
of children by strengthening families and their
communities. To treat and prevent child abuse, it is
important that we not only address children who are at risk,
but the often complex underlying issues and work
with the whole family.
For San Diego families in need, Home Start provides a
community “safety net,” utilizing evidence-based
services, support and healing during times of great challenge.
Compassionate professional services provided by our trained staff can help
re-shape a negative cycle and establish a positive pattern in its place. When
families live in a safe and nurturing environment, children feel secure and parents
are more hopeful for their future.
This is how we help families when they need it most — encouraging our clients
and empowering children to strive for a healthy and promising future.
This report summarizes the life-changing outcomes provided by Home Start in
2015 and highlights the array of programs provided by our staff and volunteers.

With sensitivity to the needs of each individual and
family we serve, our professional counselors offer
therapeutic services to promote healing, personal
growth, healthy interpersonal relationships, and positive
life transitions.

Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT)
PCIT is an evidence-based best practice supported by
more than 30 years of research. Through an earpiece,
specially trained therapists coach parents/caregivers as
they interact with their child. Parents/caregivers learn
relationship enhancing skills and parenting techniques
for improving their child’s behavior.

Child Abuse Treatment Program (CHAT)
This program is specifically designed to provide therapy to youth 17 years of age
and younger who have been victims of abuse.
Crime Victims Counseling Service (VOC)
VOC provides adults, youth and families long-term trauma treatment for
victims of crime.

COVERED CALIFORNIA NAVIGATOR PROGRAM
Provides services to individuals and families who lack adequate health
insurance. Regular health care is important for a child’s well-being and
physical development. We help families access public health insurance
which is available at little to no-cost:
✪ Medi-Cal: no-cost comprehensive health, dental and vision coverage for children and pregnant women
✪
Access for Infants and Mothers (AIM): health insurance for uninsured pregnant women who are not eligible for Medi-Cal

MATERNITY SHELTER PROGRAM (MSP)
The Maternity Shelter Program provides homeless women ages 18-24, who
are pregnant or parenting, housing and supportive services.
MSP offers these women a home and
educational programs to give them the tools
they will need to become self-sufficient
and develop healthy relationships with their
children. Specifically, residents are provided
with parenting education, job readiness training,
financial literacy and higher education support.

Our Thrift Boutique supports Home Start’s residential shelter program —
a safe place that offers homeless young mothers renewed hope and an
opportunity to build confidence, access programs and strengthen their
families.
The store also provides a supportive setting for these young mothers to
develop job skills and gain work experience as they move toward greater
independence. There are several ways you can get involved!
