Our Help and Comfort - St Katherine Greek Orthodox Church
“Our Help and Comfort” St. Katherine Greek Orthodox Church Rev. Fr. Michael K. Courey, D.Min., Economos Rev. Dcn. Cary Constantine, Pastoral Assistant 722 Knob Hill Avenue, Redondo Beach, CA 90277 (310) 540-2434 Website: www.stkatherinegoc.org July & August 2013 Volume 3, Issue 4 GREEK FESTIVAL 2013 & OUR BUILDING PROJECT ANSWERS TO FREQUESTLY ASKED QUESTIONS A MESSAGE FROM FATHER MICHAEL Where will the Greek Festival be held due to the construction project? Many people have been wondering: “Will our church grounds be prepared for the Greek Festival this year?” I am happy to report to you that the answer is “YES!” Our grounds are being prepared for the opening of the Greek Festival on Friday, July 12. As we have done for the last decade plus, our Festival will be held at St. Katherine’s. We will have the new Knob Hill improvements for disabled access complete in time for the Festival. Our inner courtyard has been expanded to increase outdoor seating and improve the movement of people from one section of the grounds to another. Of course, these upgrades will improve our accessibility and outdoor usable space not only for the Festival but more importantly for our everyday church use of our buildings and grounds. There will be some changes to our Festival layout due to the increased outdoor space to allow for better use of our entire campus. We believe that these changes will result in a more enjoyable Greek Festival! When the Redondo Beach Planning Commission approved our Master Plan, they requested we schedule our construction so that it does not interfere with the annual Greek Festival! Our goal is to joyfully accomplish this request. When will the new Education Center be open? Although our grounds will be prepared for the Greek Festival this year in July, public access to the interior of the building will not be possible until late September. Youth Sunday will take place the Sunday after Labor Day Weekend, September 8, and Sunday School classes will begin in on September 15, in the Community Center. We are planning to open the building for community use following the blessing from His Eminence Metropolitan Gerasimos during a pastoral visit of His Eminence on Saturday, September 28 and Sunday, September 29. On Sunday, September 29, classes will be held for the first time in the newly remodeled Education Center. What can I do to help with the Festival and the Building Project? All proceeds from the Greek Festival will go to the Building Project! Here are ways that you can help with the Greek Festival: 1) Volunteer your time to help before the Festival with food preparation; 2) Donate cash to the Festival to offset our costs; 3) Help with Festival set up the week prior; 4) Volunteer at the Festival to work a booth; 5) Help with Festival cleanup the week following. Regarding the Building Project, in addition to helping make our Greek Festival a success, we will need every family to consider making a pledge to the Capital Campaign. Our Master Plan has three Phases, and there are opportunities for all of us to be involved in one way or another, each of us giving of our time, talent, and treasury according to our ability, with a cheerful heart! Love in Christ Jesus, our Lord, God, and Savior, +Father Michael ORTHROS 9:00 AM; DIVINE LITURGY 10:00AM; SUNDAY SCHOOL FOLLOWING HOLY COMMUNION; MEMORIALS / 40 DAY BLESSINGS AFTER LITURGY Our Help and Comfort PRESIDENT’S MESSAGE—NOTES FROM JUNE 2 PARISH ASSEMBLY GEORGE MITSANAS For this month’s President’s Message, I am sharing my presentation (notes) from our recent Parish Assembly meeting. Please note I did expand on most topics in greater detail as I stood at the podium. For our November Parish Assembly meeting, I plan on working with our Parish Council to explore ways on increasing attendance including offering activities in the courtyard or Youth Center for our youth while their parents attend the Parish Assembly meeting. During the next Parish Council meeting this topic will be on our meeting agenda. Meeting minutes for all Parish Assembly and Parish Council meetings are available through the office. I am once again honored to speak with you about our wonderful Saint Katherine Community. I stand here today, however, at the podium for the first time as your Parish Council President. I would like to take a moment to sincerely thank our Clergy for all their dedication, spiritual guidance and commitment to our Community. The Council wants to thank Gus Alex, thank you for serving as our Parliamentarian. I would also like to recognize our previous Parish Council President, Nick Boyiazis. Nick is a very special person who has served our community faithfully and in many different capacities. I would like to take a moment and ask that Father Michael lead the Parish Assembly in a special prayer for Nick’s wife, Yvonne Boyiazis. Now, I would like to introduce our Parish Council members: Christ Tzelepis – Vice President Stephanie Vezzuto - Secretary John Giakouminakis – Treasurer Patrick Santy – Assistant Treasurer {New Position} Elaine Coate, Helen Dalis, Bill Vasilion, Nate Hubbard , Phil Rausch, Andy Mitrosilis - Members at Large Our PC members are dedicated; effective, trustworthy, hard working and most importantly we all share the common love of our Saint Katherine community. Who are we serving? In my February President’s Message, I reported the following: We have approximately 700 families in our local community We have almost 500 families who are either pledged stewards or donors We have 212 members under the age of 18 enrolled in our youth groups During 2012 we had 3 weddings, 20 baptisms, 8 funerals and 13 forty-day child blessings. (There are also continuous memorials, house blessings, hospital visits and spiritual counseling.) During the first 45 days of 2013, we have had 8 funerals (not a typo). You will hear today that our Youth, Treasury, Campus Remodel, Capital Campaign, Festival and many more aspects of our community are in good shape. Accomplishing all this does not just happen. It requires the sincere love of our Church, Community and a willingness to give back with our time, talent and treasury. A few dates to mark on you calendars: Metropolitan Visit is scheduled for September 28 - 29 for the opening of our Youth Center. We intend on throwing an all Community event for all generations. More to follow about the details. Mardi Gras 2014 is scheduled for Saturday, March 2 at the Palos Verdes Golf Club. Again, thank you for the opportunity and honor to serve our Saint Katherine Community. 2 Our Help and Comfort STEWARDSHIP ROZ HALIKIS & KATRINA WOLFE Many thanks to our St. Katherine Parish for once again giving support, dedication and love. With this devotion, we are certain that our faith and our ministries will grow to serve all. Please stop by the Stewardship Board to read about the latest honorees spotlighted by the Stewardship Committee. Sophia Peratis and Kosta Mallakis are two of our dedicated stewards who through the years have always been willing to help in our ministries. Be sure to thank them for all they have done and continue to do for our Church. AXIOI ! ! ! As of June 26, 2013 we have received 382 pledge cards totaling $409,719.00. Our goal for 2013 is $475,000. Please read the following commentary written by one of our young stewards, Ana Papadakis, expressing her love for the church and on becoming a pledged steward for the first time. Thank you, Ana, for the wonderful thoughts and for accepting to serve on the Stewardship Committee. REFLECTIONS ON STEWARDSHIP ANA PAPADAKIS While driving home from church recently, I felt an overwhelming sense of belonging. This intense sensation did not strike me like a bolt of lightning nor did it hover around me and seep into my body by virtue of osmosis. Instead, I found that this feeling was budding from within. Upon further introspection, I soon realized that this sense was growing stronger, taking shape, and in fact, wasn’t new at all; my newfound sense of belonging had actually been developing over several years, by unconsciously witnessing the selfless contributions of many of our church parishioners. I am 25 years old and approaching my third year in the maddening challenge of law school. I learned the virtue of hard work and self-sacrifice at a young age in my family’s restaurant. The aforementioned are just a few pieces of a prism that reflect who I am. During that drive home from church I realized that I was discovering my place in my church community. I could add another piece to that colorful prism that would strengthen my character. I suddenly came to the realization of my own ability to give back to the church that has nurtured and cared for me since I was born. As a young person, to simply “show up” for church services was enough. Somehow, in my naïve perspective, everything church-related was managed and overseen by others. I have come to realize that what others were doing for the benefit of our community reached deep into my soul and formed roots that with care and faith, have taken hold. I now relish that I am able to contribute to St. Katherine’s community by being a steward, volunteering at our festivals, and joining groups like the Stewardship Committee and the Bylaws Committee. I feel that the path I have taken has not led me to where I am today by accident. Staying close to home and attending UCLA for my undergraduate degree allowed me to continue working at my family’s restaurant. As a result of staying close to home, and in a somewhat roundabout way, I decided to go back to school to obtain a degree in law. In these recent endeavors, it has become clear to me that the gift of time is priceless. Not only is time precious in that there seems to be less and less of it as we get older, but also (and more importantly I might add) the giving of time to others and to the church has become one of the most valuable additions to my life. The gift of time is one that will keep on giving. It is one that I am grateful to have seen from a young age by being surrounded by people who devote themselves to the church and its community. It is this gift that I wish to give whole-heartedly, to join the community at large, and to be a part of something greater than myself. I believe I have become more enlightened with a sense of commitment, with a sense of belonging, with a resolve to contribute to my church, my faith, my community. BOOK STORE NEWS ANGIE SCHWITTERS & ANN ZAMPAS The St. Katherine Book Store will be up and running at this year’s Greek Festival. We are asking for your donation of gently used books on Orthodox Christianity for resale at the Festival. Please drop your books off to the book cart located outside the Church Office. All proceeds of the book sales will be donated to our Building Fund. Our Help and Comfort 3 ST. KATHERINE FOUNDATION ANGELO REVELS It was a heart warming day on May 19, 2013 as eleven of our St. Katherine young men and women were awarded merit scholarships after the Divine Liturgy. These students were ranked by an independent panel from Loyola Marymount University after their review of their completed applications. The site improvements along Knob Hill should essentially be complete and ready for use. There may be a few small items that will need to be taken care of after the Festival; however, we anticipate that the fences will be long gone, the area will be landscaped, and we will be ready to receive our 2013 Festival guests. I’m looking forward to the completion because I can almost guarantee that it will make us all proud of this accomplishment. One week before the Festival, the exterior of the Education Center will also be essentially completed, and the fences will be removed. The exterior is looking even better than I could have envisioned. Once the stone is completed and our railings are in, it will be a beautiful architectural feature on our campus. The interior of the Education Center will not be available for Festival use as we will be completing the interior finishes. Once completed, we will then prepare for Metropolitan Gerasimos to cut the ribbon on September 28 - 29, and the community can then begin to use and enjoy the wonderful upgrade to our parish. CAPITAL CAMPAIGN COMMUNIQUE ELLEN PAPADAKIS The Capital Campaign Committee will continue to periodically update parishioners on fundraising progress through our Communique. We will soon be publishing a Donor List to date. At present, plans are underway to welcome Metropolitan Gerasimos who will join us in late September for the official ribbon cutting and blessing of our new Education Building. To obtain a folder containing detailed information on the project please contact Ellen Papadakis at (424) 262-3356 or at capitalcampaign@stkatherinegoc.org. Understanding the great generational purpose of this gift will guide you to give as you are able. The first SKY Night will be October 4 and continue on the first Friday of the Month through June. There is no SKY Night in April because of the Lenten season. Our Youth Groups are: Little Lambs & HOPE (Preschool - 2nd grades), JOY (3rd - 5th grades), Jr. GOYA (6th - 8th Grades) and Sr. GOYA (9th - 12th grades). SKY Night is a busy night: dinner, time with Fr. Michael, crafts, games and even movies & outings for the older groups. Parent participation is always a blessing especially with the younger children. More information will be sent out in August. Please continue to support our youth through Stewardship and volunteering. GREEK DANCE SCHOOL JOANNA DEMETRIOU As summer approaches, another exciting year of Greek Dance is slowly winding down. We had a wonderful year of faith, dance, and fellowship as we taught our youth about our Greek culture through folk dance and song. As you probably have heard our dance groups performed very well at the Folk Dance Festival this year and were awarded medals for their outstanding performances. Our oldest group Asterismos took 3rd place in the Intermediate category, Thysavros, our upper elementary/middle school group took home the Founder’s Special Achievement Award for their Thracian suite of dances and our darling Aggelakia group stole the show at the Exhibition performances. If you weren’t able to attend the Folk Dance Festival to see our dancers perform don’t worry you can see them entertain the crowd at our annual Greek Festival this July. Our dance groups will be performing Saturday and Sunday, July 13 & 14 beginning at 6:00pm. This is a great opportunity to see our kids perform and find out what our dance program is all about. We would not be able to continue this ministry without the support of many so we would like to thank our St. Katherine community for continuing to support the dance school with spiritual and moral support and participating in our fundraising efforts. A big thank you goes out to Father Michael, Deacon Cary, Tom Bouras, the dancers, the dance school families and our wonderful instructors: Kris Captanis, Eleni Giagos, Taylor Hane, Angelena Psaras, Anna Marie Sylvia, and Yanni Vlahos. A special thanks to this year’s Dance Board Members: Joanna Demetriou (President), Georgia Vasilion (Treasurer), Zephie Critikos (VP), Meschelle Courey (VP/ Fundraising) and Maria Dedes (Secretary), for their countless hours of dedication to the Greek Dance School. Registration for next year’s Greek Dance School program will begin at Youth Sunday on September 8. We welcome all new and former dancers to join us next year. We look forward to another year of faith, dance, and fellowship. Don't miss out on the fun! For information about the dance program please contact either: Nicole Carroll: 310-541-6308 ncarroll25@msn.com; or Vicki Schiappa - 310-540-2703 or pvschiappa@gmail.com GREEK LANGUAGE SCHOOL MARY PRUITT We are on summer break for the Greek school students but the teachers are busy preparing for the fall; selecting books, generating computer aids and determining our offerings. You can help by letting us know if your children would be interested in attending. Classes will begin September 13 or 14 and continue through May. The number of classes as well as the age group depends upon enrollment. We are prepared to offer the Mommy & Me, preschool, kindergarten, first level, second level and this year a young adult class. The young adult class is open to high school students as well as young adults. It will be offered twice a week, Saturday & Sunday afternoons. Level one and level two classes will reflect the knowledge of the student. We will continue with our three native-speakers teaching the young students and a Hellenic College grad teaching the young adult class. Questions, comments, and reservations may be discussed with either Mary Pruitt Pruitt@usc.edu or 310-372-5159, or George Vassilakis vassilak@usc.edu. Before our eyes our church campus is blossoming and it is exciting to see our Education Building taking shape beautifully. We have our teachers set for next year already and we are all working hard to prepare for another Sunday School year with the wonderful kids at St. Katherine. As mentioned in the last newsletter we are bringing our Pre-K class back as well. Mary Pruitt has been developing beautiful, detailed lessons that can be adapted to our Pre-K group to expand to some of the younger children with parental assistance. Our dedicated group of teachers ready to bring the Orthodox faith to life for your kids are: Pre-K - Mary Pruitt; Kindergarten - Shana Ghekiere; 1st Grade - Meschelle Courey; 2nd Grade - Presbytera Maria & Anastasia Courey; 3rd Grade - Ronnie & Elaine Wade; 4th Grade - Karen Hood; 5th Grade - Angelica Sotiriou Rausch; Middle School - Carolyn Crossley and Kynthia Furgis; High School - Ted Wolfe. We also have an incredible group of substitutes ready and willing to step in when needed: Andrea Ballas, Mary Helen Black, Grig Gheorghiu, Barbara Menzelos, Johanna Mitrosilis, Russ Pierson, Alexandria Rausch and Adelina Stubberud. Even with all of these wonderful people we are always honored when people want to give their time and talent to Sunday School. So, if you want to become involved please let us know! The first day of Sunday School will be September 15, 2013. Please plan on signing your child up at Youth Sunday on September 8, 2013. Metropolitan Gerasimos will be blessing our Education Building and our children will participate in that special blessings. We will have more details on preparing for that event in the bulletins during upcoming weeks. 12 Our Help and Comfort
