Social Science - Statistics
Big data is used to spy on us, hire and fire us, and sell us
things we don’t need. In Dataclysm, Christian Rudder
puts this flood of information to an entirely different use:
understanding human nature. Drawing on terabytes of
data from Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, OkCupid, and many
other sites, Rudder examines the terrain of human experience to answer a range of questions: Does it matter
where you went to college? How racist are we? How do
political views alter relationships?
Philosophers, psychologists, gene hunters and neuroscientists have tried to explain our flaws and foibles.
Rudder shows that in today’s era of social media, a powerful new approach is possible, one that reveals how we
actually behave when we think no one’s looking. Outrageous and illuminating, Dataclysm, is a portrait of our
essential selves—dark, absurd, occasionally noble—and a
first look at a revolution in the making.
Author Bio
CHRISTIAN RUDDER is co-founder of OkCupid and now
serves as chief data analyst and is the author of the
popular blog OkTrends. He graduated from Harvard in

The Science of How We Get Smarter

Summary
Acclaimed science writer Annie Murphy Paul
draws on cutting-edge research to offer a
radically hopeful new theory of intelligence.
Intelligence is not fixed, she says, but can be
powerfully evoked by the everyday situations
we ourselves create. Brilliant shows us how.

Psychology - Cognitive
Most of us assume that intelligence is immutable, set
by our genetic inheritance or by our upbringing.
Brilliant explodes that myth by revealing the impact of
what Paul calls the microenvironment: the context in
which we use our minds at any given moment. Over the
past two decades, evidence has been growing that the
microenvironments in which we learn and work exert a
powerful influence on the expression of our intelligence.
From the physical postures we assume to the amount of
sleep and exercise we get, from the way we take in new
knowledge to the techniques we use to commit material to memory, from our reaction to mistakes to how we
handle distractions, from the information we glean from
classmates and coworkers to the roles we occupy in our
organizations, the situations we create (or find ourselves
in) can evoke or suppress intelligent thought and behavior. Through painstaking laboratory experiments—and
through real-world field studies involving Tibetan monks
and video-game designers, neonatal-care nurses and
racetrack bettors, Juilliard-trained pianists and Air Force
aviators—cognitive scientists and psychologists have
arrived at a revolutionary insight: by carefully structuring
the situations presented by our schools and workplaces,
we can deliberately evoke intelligence—from ourselves,
and from our children, students, and employees.

Fiction - Contemporary Women
Junior attorney Lily Wilder is six days from walking down
the aisle but has absolutely no business getting married.
Her fiancé, Will, is a sweet, intelligent, and loving man.
She, however, is sassy, impulsive, and fond of a good
drink(s). She is also unapologetic about her appetite for
sex—definitely not your average blushing bride. Lily loves
Will, but can she really go through with this? Will loves
Lily, but does he know her? As the wedding approaches,
Lily’s nights—and days—of boozing it up with her best
friend, Freddy, are an ever-present reminder of what
she’ll be giving up come Saturday. Lily’s mother, grandmother, and a bevy of stepmothers join forces to try and
stop what they feel is a disaster in the making, but Lily
refuses to hear them out. She is determined to both wed
her man and bed whom she pleases as she wraps up the
final stages of planning in her Key West hometown.
Meanwhile, her job at a powerful Manhattan firm
threatens to upend both her wedding and career—and
a dark secret from her past resurfaces, thanks to the
appearance of an old friend and the intervention of her
disapproving future mother-in-law.
Unlike anything you’ve ever read before, this joyous
and ribald debut introduces a fabulously self-assured
protagonist whose choices usher in fresh messages
about sexual politics.

Peter—devoted pastor, dedicated missionary, and loving
husband to his wife, Bea—has just accepted a demanding and perilous new job. He’s to travel to a new planet,
Oasis, to work for a mysterious corporation called USIC.
He’s tasked with reaching out to the indigenous race, to
make sure they are as peaceful as they seem.
Resolutely devout and strengthened by his letters from
Bea at home, Peter undertakes his job with complete
focus. The Oasans are shockingly open to his teachings,
but things start to unravel when Bea’s missives from
Earth take a dark tone. Earth appears to be coming
apart at the seams: typhoons and earthquakes are devastating whole countries and governments are crumbling. Even the hospital where she works has ceased to
function. Their unearthly divide is testing Peter and Bea’s
relationship to a startling degree.
Peter is thrown into crisis. USIC might be hiding its
true motives in developing Oasis, and the Oasans themselves are frustratingly opaque. Bea’s desperate letters
are only fomenting his doubt. Peter is suddenly faced
with an impossible—and dangerous—decision: to follow
his faith, or follow his heart. His life depends on it.

Ladydi Garcia Martínez is fierce, funny, and smart, yet
she was born into a world where being a girl is a dangerous thing. In the mountains of Guerrero, Mexico, women
must fend for themselves, as their men have left to seek
opportunities elsewhere. They live in the shadows of the
drug war, where bodies turn up on the village outskirts
and school is only held sporadically. In Guerrero, drug
lords are kings and mothers disguise their daughters as
sons. When that fails, they “make them ugly”—cropping
their hair, blackening their teeth—anything to protect
them from the rapacious grasp of the cartels. And when
the notorious black SUVs roll through town, Ladydi and
her friends burrow into holes in their backyards like animals, tucked safely out of sight.
An illuminating and affecting portrait of women
in rural Mexico and a stunning exploration of the
hidden consequences of an unjust war, Prayers for the
Stolen is an unforgettable story of friendship, family,
and determination.

Ephram Jennings has never forgotten the beautiful girl
with the long braids running through the piney woods
of Liberty, their small East Texas town. Young Ruby, “the
kind of pretty it hurt to look at,” has suffered beyond
imagining, so as soon as she can, she flees suffocating
Liberty for the bright pull of 1950s New York. Ruby
quickly winds her way into the ripe center of the city—
the darkened piano bars and hidden alleyways of the
Village—all the while hoping for a glimpse of the red hair
and green eyes of her mother. When a telegram from her
cousin forces her to return home, 30-year-old Ruby Bell
finds herself reliving the devastating violence of her girlhood. With the terrifying realization that she might not
be strong enough to fight her way back out again, Ruby
struggles to survive her memories of the town’s dark
past. Meanwhile, Ephram must choose between loyalty
to the sister who raised him and the chance for a life
with the woman he has loved since he was a boy. Utterly

Will has never been to the outside, at least not since
he can remember. And he has certainly never gotten to
know anyone other than his mother, a fiercely loving yet
wildly eccentric agoraphobe who drowns in panic at the
thought of opening the front door. Their little world comprises only the rooms in their home, each filled with Will’s
art projects and named for various exotic locales.
Soon the confines of his world close in on Will. Despite
his mother’s protestations, Will ventures outside clad in
a protective helmet and braces himself for danger. He
eventually meets and befriends Jonah, a quiet boy who
introduces Will to skateboarding.
Will welcomes his new world with enthusiam, his fears
fading and his body hardening with each new bump,
scrape, and fall. But life quickly gets complicated. When
a local boy goes missing, Will and Jonah want to uncover what happened. They embark on an extraordinary
adventure that pulls Will far from the confines of his
closed-off world and into the throes of early adulthood
and the dangers that everyday life offers.

Social Science - Disease &
Health Issues
In the tradition of the best investigative journalism, physician and reporter Sheri Fink reconstructs five days at
Memorial Medical Center and draws the reader into the
lives of those who struggled mightily to survive and to
maintain life amid chaos.
After Katrina struck and the floodwaters rose, the
power failed, and the heat climbed, exhausted caregivers chose to designate certain patients last for rescue.
Months later, several health professionals faced criminal
allegations that they deliberately injected numerous
patients with drugs to hasten their deaths.
Five Days at Memorial, the culmination of six years
of reporting, unspools the mystery of what happened in
those days, bringing the reader into a hospital fighting
for its life and into a conversation about the most terrifying form of health care rationing.
In a voice at once involving and fair, masterful and intimate, Fink exposes the hidden dilemmas of end-of-life
care and reveals just how ill-prepared we are in America
for the impact of large-scale disasters—and how we can
do better. A remarkable book, engrossing from start to
finish, Five Days at Memorial radically transforms your
understanding of human nature in crisis.

Years ago, the city of Bulikov wielded the powers of the
Gods to conquer the world. But after its divine protectors
were mysteriously killed, the conqueror has become the
conquered; the city’s proud history has been erased and
censored, progress has left it behind, and it is just another
colonial outpost of the world’s new geopolitical power.
Into this musty, backward city steps Shara Thivani.
Officially, the quiet mousy woman is just another lowly
diplomat sent by Bulikov’s oppressors. Unofficially, Shara
is one of her country’s most accomplished spymasters—
dispatched to investigate the brutal murder of a seemingly harmless historian.
As Shara pursues the mystery through the evershifting physical and political geography of the city, she
begins to suspect that the beings who once protected
Bulikov may not be as dead as they seem—and that her
own abilities might be touched by the divine as well.

Biography & Autobiography Personal Memoirs
Born in 1963, Anya von Bremzen grew up in a communual
Moscow apartment where eighteen families shared one
kitchen. She sang odes to Lenin, black-marketeered Juicy
Fruit gum at school, and, like most Soviet citizens, longed
for a taste of the mythical West. When Anya was 10, she
and her mother fled the political repression of Brezhnevera Russia, arriving in Philadelphia with no winter coats
and no right of return.
Now Anya lives in two parallel food universes: one
where she writes about four-star restaurants, the other
where a taste of humble kolbasa transports her back to
her scarlet-blazed socialist past. To bring that past to
life in its full flavor, both bitter and sweet, Anya and her
mother, Larisa, decide to cook their way through every
decade of the Soviet experience. Through these meals,
Anya tells the story of three Soviet generations. Their stories unfold against the panorama of Soviet history and,
ultimately, the collapse of the USSR. Bound together by
Anya’s passionate nostalgia, sly humor, and piercing observations, Mastering the Art of Soviet Cooking stirs our
souls and our senses.

they really want—more than 200 pages of his thoughts

coconut water was invented to get people to stop drinking coconut water, why pretzel bread is #3 on his most

question: “Which animal is more delicious: the pig, the
cow, or the bacon cheeseburger?”

The long-awaited biography of the worldclass music legend, based on exclusive
interviews, originally intended for Billy
Joel’s autobiography
Fred Schruers provides an unfettered look into Billy Joel’s
journey from a pint-sized kid growing up in a cookiecutter Long Island suburb to a rock star of monumental
success, and the person that remains behind his iconic
status. After sitting down with Joel for over 100 hours of
exclusive interviews, Schruers tells Joel’s story with an
unparalleled level of intimate knowledge. He recounts
the bouts Joel fought in and out of the boxing ring, trying to assert himself in spite of his small stature, and the
sweaty, weekend shows he played as a member of the
Hassles. Schruers captures the spirit of a restless artist
breaking into the 1970s songwriting scene in narrating the experiences and relationships that inspired the
songs that helped define an era, such as “Only the Good
Die Young” and “Always a Woman to Me,” bringing to
life stories that live within those songs. Throughout, the
voices of Joel’s inner circle and associates—including the
Mean Brothers and the road dogs, who lived much of the
journey with him—are heard in this all-access story of a
beloved rock star’s epic American story.
Author Bio
FRED SCHRUERS enjoyed a successful, high-profile career
as a writer at Rolling Stone, chronicling an impressive
body of musicians and actors, including Fleetwood Mac,

Chris Rock. His writing has also appeared in Premiere,

John Cleese ranks among the most popular and influential comic geniuses of our time. His work has had—and
continues to have—an enormous impact on the world of
entertainment. After getting his start as a writer and actor on the landmark David Frost-hosted The Frost Report,
where he worked alongside many who would later become comedy icons, Cleese landed his most famous role
as a star of the TV show Monty Python’s Flying Circus.
To the legions of Python fans and comedy aficionados
worldwide, Cleese’s work with the Pythons has become
the stuff of legend. From a Minister of Silly Walks, to the
owner (and would-be returner) of a dead parrot, to the
ultraviolent Lancelot in Monty Python and the Holy Grail.
Cleese followed his Python work with a hugely successful turn as the neurotic hotel manager Basil Fawlty in the
British comedy Fawlty Towers, which in 2000 topped the
British Film Institute’s list of the 100 Greatest Television
Programs, as well as his starring role in the classic comedy A Fish Called Wanda, And these days there’s a new
generation of fans who’ve come to know and love him
for his recurring roles in the James Bond, Harry Potter,
and Shrek franchises, and his many guest appearances
on TV, ranging from roles on The Avengers and Dr. Who
to, more recently, 3rd Rock from the Sun, Will and Grace,
and Entourage.

Biography - Business
This is the behind the scenes account of
how Steve Jobs arguably became the most
famous and visionary CEO in history. Awardwinning journalist Brent Schlender and
veteran editor Rick Tetzeli have interviewed
friends, industry insiders, and the people
who knew Jobs best throughout his evolution
as a CEO and leader. In addition Schlender,
who knew Jobs personally for 25 years, has
over 100 hours of interview tapes with Jobs
to draw on, many hours of which have never
before been transcribed.
In May 2012, Schlender’s and Tetzeli’s Fast Company
cover story about Jobs, entitled “The Lost Tapes of Steve
Jobs,” created a sensation in publications around the
world. The narrative thrust of Becoming Steve Jobs is
Job’s growth and evolution as a manager and leader of
others, as an astute CEO, as a father and as a visionary
with an unparalled sense of what consumers wanted—
before they knew what they wanted themselves. But he
didn’t start out with those skills. When he first left Apple
in 1985 and struck out to form his own company, NeXT,
he knew little about running a company, or holding to
a budget, or developing successful products. It was during his years in the wilderness, unsuccessfully launching
NeXT, and helping to revitalize Pixar, that he learned the
skills that would make him so successful upon his return
to Apple in 1996.

seasons, Rose is well qualified to expose the inner workings of college basketball. His sharp tongue, quick wit,
and irreverent sense of humor leave no subject untouched, from the ways players blow off steam on the
road (champagning and campaigning) and what the
groupie scene is like in various NBA cities, to what draft
day is like and how race plays out in the locker room.
Flagrant Fouls will also discuss trends and transitions
within the game, including the rise and fall of the point

Self-Help - Happiness
Chris Guillebeau specializes in helping people break
out of the “box” of their everyday lives. His most recent
book, The $100 Startup, explained how to create income
on one’s own terms and not necessarily abide by a 9-to5, “work for the man” model. But while liberation from
“the grind” is one step in pursuing a life of purpose, it’s
far from the only way. Indeed, genuine fulfillment typically requires a quest or challenge that is big and
ambitious, that involves surpassing the limits most
people accept as part of their boring, routine-filled lives
and making an actual difference. Chris has undertaken a
successful quest of his own, having visited every country
in the world by age 35. But the quests or projects discussed in this book need not involve travel at all. What
they do involve is commitment and progressive accomplishment, losing oneself in an accretive task—whether
it be a physical journey, an artistic enterprise, a philanthropic feat, even an act of political protest. Chris has
surveyed thousands who’ve undertaken such quests and
really drilled down to discover how they went about it,
the common mistakes, what happened when they hit
the wall, and how they coped when the quest was over.
His specialty is well-researched, easy-to-follow advice
that helps readers bridge the gap between “impossible
dream” and “everyday reality.”

new theory and formula for how to build the

Business & Economics Entrepreneurship
Refining and expanding on the lecture notes from his
startups course at Stanford (which received over a million views online), Thiel says that progress comes in
two forms: vertical and horizontal. Horizontal progress
means copying or iterating on products, ideas, and solutions that already exist; vertical progress is building new
ones from the ground up. Yet horizontal progress yields
only incremental improvements and short-term profits that are quickly competed away. To create lasting
value, we must strive for vertical progress: going from
0 to 1. Thiel urges innovators in all fields not to compete
on well-trodden paths but rather to find a new frontier,
plant their flag, monopolize, then scale up as quickly as
possible. The next great company won’t be another
Microsoft or Apple—those have been done. Instead it will
be something completely new that we have yet to
dream up.

Scrum (which gets its name from the formation in rugby
in which the whole team locks its arms to gain control
of the ball) is the reason that Amazon can launch a
new feature on its website every day. It’s why the Red
River Army Depot in Texas was able to roll out armored
Humvees 39 times faster than before. It’s how the FBI
finally created a massive terrorist-tracking database.
The reason for the rapid embrace of Scrum across so
many disciplines is simple: organizations that implement
Scrum typically double productivity and quality—and
sometimes the increase can be as much as twelve-fold.
But the promise of Scrum as a project management tool
extends far beyond business. Much as Atul Gawande did
in The Checklist Manifesto, Sutherland shows how this
unique approach to problem solving and team optimization has nearly universal application. At bottom, Scrum is
about coming together with your team, looking at what
you’re doing, and course correcting.

media alike as the key to growth, a burning issue in every
company, from startups to the Fortune 500. And in that
space, Fahrenheit 212 is viewed as a high-performance
innovation SWAT team, able to solve the most complex,
mission-critical challenges. Under Mark Payne, the firm’s
president and head of Idea Development, Fahrenheit 212,
since its inception a decade ago, has worked with such
giants of industry as Coca-Cola, Samsung, Hershey’s,
Campbell’s Soup, LG, Starbucks, Mattel, Office Depot,
Citibank, P&G, American Express, Nutrisystem, GE, and
Goldman Sachs to name a few. It has been praised as a
hotspot for innovation in publications such as Fortune,
Esquire, Businessweek, and FastCompany.
What drives Fahrenheit 212’s success is its unique
methodology, combining what it calls Magic—the creative side of innovation—with Money—the business side.
They explore every potential idea with the end goal in
mind—bringing an innovative product to market in a way
that will transform a company’s business and growth. In
How to Kill a Unicorn, Mark Payne pulls back the curtain
on how the company is able to bring more innovative
products and ideas successfully to market
than any other firm and offers blow-by-blow inside
accounts of how they grappled with and solved their
biggest challenges.

Social Science - Sociology General
The American project is on the threshold of its third
act. Act I was the nation’s founding, establishing protections of individual liberty; Act II began in the 20th
century, when the welfare state was grafted onto the
original conception of limited government. But Act II has
proven unsustainable. Through legislative overreach and
misguided court decisions that expanded the federal
government’s scope, regulations originally intended to
protect individuals have morphed into an unjust, tangled
web that harms individuals and small businesses while
serving special interests and the few who are wealthy
enough to operate above the law by hiring good lawyers
and accountants.
In By the People, Charles Murray shows how, through
a resurgence in federalism (states’ rights), coordinated
mass civil disobedience, and privately funded court
cases in which the corruption of the regulatory process
gets exposed and hamstrung, Americans can take back
their individual liberty and restore the rule of law rightly
understood, because the federal government isn’t an
invincible foe against which we are powerless to resist.

Summary
A wry homage to Where’s Waldo that
challenges readers to “find Jesus” in a
variety of unlikely places
On each page of Finding Jesus, the Son of God is hidden
in a crowded scene—from a rock concert to a wedding
to a grocery store. The objective for the reader is to “find
Jesus” in the detailed illustrations—and it’s not always
easy, what with Jesus’s propensity for walking on water
and turning the other cheek! Darkly funny and pleasantly challenging, this interactive children’s book for adults
makes the perfect gift for believers and skeptics alike.

Summary
Based on Wired’s most popular column, an
irreverent, informative look at the shocking,
disgusting, and dumbfounding ingredients
found in the products we put in and on our

Axe deodorant
Wired writer Patrick Di Justo examines the inner workings of everything from WD-40 and Cool Whip to baby
formula and Miracle-Gro and reports his findings in the
magazine’s “What’s Inside” column (also its most popular). With rigorous research and sarcastic wit, he explains
what each ingredient does, what its side effects are,
other uses it may have, and how it interacts with the rest
of the ingredients to make ordinary household products
do what they do. The results are shocking, disgusting,
and even dumbfounding.
This Is What You Just Put in Your Mouth is a collection
of the best columns from the magazine, along with more
than ten new pieces, rounded out by stories of the wacky
experiences he had while doing his research.

Be the Message
Taking Your Faith Beyond Words to a Life of Action
Kerry Shook and Chris Shook
Publicist: Beverly Rykerd

Summary
The Gospel is not about what we say. It’s
about who we are, what we do, and how we
are Jesus to the world around us. The Gospel
is not a well-crafted sermon. It’s a life lived.

Religion - Christian Life
Many of us are caught in a disconnect between the
vital faith we want to have and the same old, same
old of words and messages we’ve heard and echoed all
our lives. Kerry and Chris Shook say that the solution to
that disconnect is a practical understanding of how the
Gospel is to be lived out in our lives. On the one hand,
being the Gospel is simple. As Chris Shook says, “You
can do more than nothing.” What does that look like for
you? What are the things holding you back from a life
of action, one that that lives out the Gospel? How do
you begin to change so that yours can be a life of action
not words? On the other hand, the call to a life of active
faith is costly. Kerry Shook explores the biblical story of
the rich young ruler and notes how he knew what the
“words” of the Gospel were, he knew the commandments, he had the right theology. But Jesus called him
to a Gospel of action—to give up his wealth to the poor.
And the rich young man couldn’t go there—he couldn’t
accept the cost. What does it cost you to be the Gospel
in your world?

Woodlands Church in The Woodlands, Texas, in 1993.

What could be more familiar than the Christmas story—
and yet what could be more extraordinary? The cast of
characters is strange and exotic: shepherds and magicians, an emperor and a despot, angels, and a baby who
is Almighty God. The strangeness calls for an explanation, and this book provides it by examining the characters and the story in light of the biblical and historical
context. Bestselling author Scott Hahn, who has
written extensively on Scripture and the early Church,
brings evidence to light, dispelling some of the mystery
of the story. Yet he also make Christmas familiar all over
again by showing it to be a family story. Christmas, as it
appears in the New Testament, is the story of a father,
a mother, and a child—their relationships, their interactions, their principles, their individual lives, and their
common life.
