Institute of Landscape Architects Malaysia CERTIFIED PLAYGROUND SAFETY INSPECTOR PROGRAMME 2-5 May 2012 PUTRAJAYA, MALAYSIA CERTIFIED PLAYGROUND SAFETY INSPECTOR PROGRAM The Certified Playground Safety Inspector (CPSI) Programme is a professional certification programme for professionals and practitioners, accredited with the National Park and Recreation Association, USA and the International Safety Institute based in USA. Perbadanan Putrajaya, in collaboration with the International Playground Institute LLC (IPSI, LLC) will be conducting a playground Maintenance Training Programme and certification examination on 2-5 May 2012 at Perbadanan Putrajaya Complex, Presint 3, Putrajaya, Malaysia. The 3-day rigorous programme focuses on the standards and practices of installation and maintenance of playground and recreation facilities. The examination will be held on the final day of programme. Topics for the course include: Playground Safety Standards Overview Playground Injuries and How They Occur ASTM Standards and CPSI Guidelines Hazard Identification and Analysis Proper Use of Test Method Probes and Gauges Play Equipment Performance Requirements WHO SHOULD ATTEND? Landscape Managers | Landscape Architects | Landscape Supervisors | Landscape Designers| Contract Managers | Facilities Managers and Engineers | Local Authority Managers, Supervisors, Technicians and others responsible for operations and safety of playgrounds WHY CPSI PROGRAM IMPORTANT? According to the United States Consumer Product Safety Commission (CPSC), it is estimated that each year over 205,850 injuries requiring emergency room medical treatment occur on playgrounds and approximately fifteen children will die from playground related injuries. Lack of or improper play area inspection and maintenance is alleged to be a major contributing cause of nearly 40% of these injuries. The CPSI Programme was developed by the Park District Risk Management Agency (PDRMA) from 2004 to 2008, this programme is the most comprehensive training programme on playground maintenance and inspection and includes other new industry risk management methods developed specifically for this programme. FACILITATORS AND ASSESSORS Mr. Ken Kutska is an independent consultant in the area of safety specializing in play spaces for children. Ken received his B.S. in Public Park and Recreation Administration from Western Illinois University. He is a Certified Park and Recreation Professional and a Certified Playground Safety Inspector with more than 35 years of full-time experience in all aspects of public park operations management. He chaired his agency’s Safety Committee from 1984 until retiring in 2006. Ken is an active member of the Illinois Park and Recreation Association and the National Recreation and Park Association. He has served on the; IPRA Board of Directors, chaired the IPRA Park and Natural Resource Management Section, chaired the NRPA Great Lakes Regional Council, the NRPA National Forum, served on the NRPA Board of Trustees, and was President of the NRPA in 1995. Ken is cofounder of the NRPA National Playground Safety Institute. The NPSI’s Certified Playground Safety Inspector Course and Exam Program has certified more than 30,000 with a current national registry of 8,000. Ken has been a CPSI Course Certified Instructor since 1994. The course is a must for municipalities, schools, child care facilities, health departments, playground manufacturers and installers; park and recreation agencies; public facility maintenance managers and technicians and others responsible for the day to day operations and safety of playgrounds.
