Welcome to the second Issue of From E to You... At this
time of year the focus of most clubs is on getting their
Distinguished Club Programmes firmly in place, welcoming
Area Governors on their first official visit, and – of course –
enjoying the challenges of the first club speech contests of the
2010/11 Toastmasters year – the Humorous Speech contest
and the Table Topics contest.
Many of you will have already competed and completed your
club level events and will be looking forward to supporting
your representatives at your Area contests coming up in
September. A timetable of the many Area contests is included
in this newsletter - along with some information on the
Division E Conference in October and the District Convention
in New Plymouth in November.
For those of you who may not have heard, take note of the
pictures on the right – Robin Grieve, our New Zealand
representative at the World Championship of Public Speaking,
did us proud. Maybe your turn next year?
The last few weeks have been busy in Division E with Judging
Clinics and the Club Coaching Clinic being successfully held in
the region in August. Thanks to all involved - read more inside.

Award Corner
The Toastmasters’ educational program is the heart of every Toastmasters club. It
provides members with a proven curriculum that develops communication and
leadership skills one step at a time, with many opportunities for awards and recognition
along the way. It is important that we recognise and acknowledge the achievements of
our Club members when they receive an award.

Congratulations to the members of Wellington Professional Toastmasters
who have already achieved 7 goals since the beginning of July.
Congratulations also to the members of Hutt Valley, Spinnaker, Five Crowns and High Noon Toastmasters who have each
achieved 2 goals, and the members of ANZ National Wellington, Business Breakfast, Gracefield, Ngaio, Waikanae, DIAlogue and
Island Bay Toastmasters who have all achieved one goal each.

UPPER HUTT TOASTMASTERS CLUB – 30th ANNIVERSARY CELEBRATIONS

Earlier this year the Upper Hutt Toastmasters Club celebrated their 30 Anniversary...
In June 1979, 8 people met for the first time
on a cold winter’s night at the Progressive
Association Community Hall, Pinehaven; this
was the very first public meeting of what was
to become the Upper Hutt Toastmasters
Community Club. Two of the people at this
meeting, John and Pat Christianson, became
founding members when the Club was
chartered with Toastmasters International in
the United States, and they are still members
today!
The idea for a Toastmasters Club started when
John was at a national conference in Nelson for
the Sports Recreation Association. A fellow

discussed Toastmasters and, a year after the conference, John contacted this person for more information about Toastmasters.
This was followed up with a meeting of three people at the Christianson’s home to discuss the forming of a club.
The club was mentored by Roger Pitchforth from the South
Wairarapa Club (which no longer exists) and became chartered
at the beginning of April 1980. In those days it was not a
requirement to have 20 members to start as it is today, but we
are happy to report that after 30 years, the Upper Hutt
Toastmasters maintains a membership averaging 22 people.
In the 30 years of the Club’s existence the members have met
not only at the Pinehaven Hall but also the Red Cross Rooms,
Astral Towers and the old Cossie club until the fire, when some
of the Toastmaster records were lost. Club meetings are
currently held at Kingswood.
Both John and Pat have achieved the highest award at
Toastmasters, that of Distinguished Toastmasters (DTMs). To
achieve this they have completed speech projects and worked

Division E is currently made up of 9 areas, one of which, Area E8, comprises the following clubs: Upper Hutt, Wairarapa on
Weekends (Featherston), Masterton and a new club in formation - Top Town Talkers (Greytown).
The Christianson’s list of achievements for the club are many, and include starting and sponsoring six new clubs; John has
represented Division E in national speech competitions, and the couple have coached at schools such as St Patrick’s,
Silverstream, as well as speaking to various groups all over New Zealand, Australia, UK and Philippines.
To celebrate the club’s 30 successful years, current and ex members were invited to a lunch at Riverfern Restaurant, on Saturday
27th March 2010, starting at 11 am. This was followed by the Area E8 International Speech and Evaluation Competitions, and
the sun shone down to give us a lovely autumn day to enjoy.

The club formerly known as SKM Toastmasters has undergone a name change and is
now named the Terrace@12 Toastmasters Club

Leadership Track
The Competent Leadership manual is the core of the leadership track.
This manual is organized into ten separate projects, each with its own individual
focus or objective. An extremely effective tool in developing your leadership skills,
the Competent Leadership manual gives you the opportunity at the beginning of each
project to do a self-inventory of the skills you already have, as well as those you feel
may need improvement. Each project also lists numerous tips, how-to's, and
suggestions for practicing your new skills.
As with the Communication Track, another Toastmaster will evaluate each project,
providing positive feedback and suggestions for improvement, as necessary. After
completing the Competent Leadership manual, you earn Competent Leader (CL)
recognition and are able to focus your efforts on the projects in the advanced speech
and leadership manuals of the Toastmasters program.
Your club's Vice President Education (or other Club officer if a VPE is the one earning the award) can submit an application for
your awards online at the Toastmasters International website. The chart on the left below lists the 10 projects in the CL manual.
The chart on the right outlines the key components of the Communication and Leadership tracks.

After earning the CL award you can further refine and
develop your leadership skills by working in the advanced
leader program. Members working in this program are
eligible for Advanced Leader Bronze (ALB) and Advanced
Leader Silver (ALS) and Distinguished Toastmaster (DTM)
recognition.

Membership Promotions
Triple Peaks Award
Purpose - To recognize those individual members who excel in both educational
achievement and membership recruitment during the same Toastmasters Year.
Description - Each recipient receives a certificate and a voucher for two Advanced
Communication manuals from District 72 Supplies. Recipients can choose
whether to receive their award at their April Division Conference or either the
May or November District Convention.
Criteria - This award is made to any member in good standing who during the same Toastmasters year:
• Achieved one communications award (CC, ACB, ACS, ACG), and
• Achieved one leadership award (CL, ALB, or ALS only) and
• Personally sponsored at least three new members of Toastmasters (excludes dual and reinstated members).
• The recipient must be listed as sponsor on the Form 400
An award entry is required. The awards achieved and sponsored members are verified with Toastmasters International.

Judging Workshops

The two judging workshops run recently (24 and 28 August 2010)
were well attended. The workshops, facilitated by Kath Cherry and
Mark Garnham, were not lecture-style sessions, but involved the
audience in almost all aspects.
The aim of the workshop was to give the participants practical judging
experience and to understand what a judge must be looking for.
After an initial presentation on the theory of judging, the audience
was able to judge 3 table topics and a humorous speech. After the
results were collected, a group discussion took place during which the
judges-to-be were invited to give the logic for their own score sheets.
As was pointed out by the facilitators, there were no right or wrong
scores....it was a matter of understanding how and why they reached
their decisions.
It appeared that everyone picked up some helpful hints for judging, even the more experienced judges who attended.
Coaching Clinic
The recent Club Coaching Clinic was attended by 12 potential club coaches. Presented by Division E TLIs Judy Love and
Michelle Selby, the initial presentation on “What is a Club Coach” gave the theory behind being a club coach.
The participants were split into groups of 3 and given various club scenarios to analyse. Each group then gave a summary of their
analysis, and the entire audience discussed all points raised.
The final assignment given to the groups was the current situation of an actual club for
analysis and to produce a rescue plan. Again the individual groups gave their comments
and thoughts on what needed to be done to save the club. A compilation of the group’s
ideas was noted by the facilitators.
