Innovative outpatient Treatment an
supportive housing for addiction
“As the drummer for the rock band, The Del Fuegos, I experienced
firsthand the devastating effects of drug and alcohol abuse.
Fortunately, my path led to recovery, and to a new passion
as an Addictions Specialist .“
As a creative person with a history of addiction, I knew that some of the larger obstacles to recovery were
the feelings of hopelessness and the fear of not being able to return to a productive, creative lifestyle without
drugs or alcohol. I saw the need for a unique new treatment approach that would combine evidence-based
treatment and creative expression. The result is Right Turn: an innovative program for men and women that
offers intensive outpatient services and supportive housing for men in a uniquely creative environment.
Anyone with a desire for creative expression, recovery and the support of a
kindred community will feel welcome here.
Welcome to Right Turn. We look forward to helping you find your own path to recovery.

a Kind, Gentle Approach
“Many of us at Right Turn have dealt with addiction on a personal level and understand
the struggle to get well. That’s why we love our work. We get to see people get better.”
We know that addiction comes in many forms—from alcohol and chemical
dependency to process addictions of gambling, gaming, and sex. Our services
are designed to address the underlying issues that lead to destructive coping
patterns, and to do this in a compassionate way. We understand that there
is no single road to recovery and our services must be personalized to
help individuals find their own road to recovery.

meet our directors
“My training is in social
work, public health and
psychotherapy. When I
joined forces with Woody
in 2005, I had already
designed and run many
addiction recovery
programs, a residential
program for opiate-addicted
women and their children,
and a women’s program in
Dorchester. The idea of designing a landmark
program with Woody was very exciting to me.
Our shared vision was to develop an innovative
program that would incorporate complementary
expressive therapies and creativity into an addiction
program. Evoking and developing individual creativity
as a part of recovery is incredibly rewarding.”
Gabrielle (Abby) Dean, LICSW, MPH; Clinical Director
“In addition to the physical
aspect of addiction, there
is always a mental health
component. The emotional
factors and experience
underlying addictive behaviors -- from self-esteem
to personal trauma – need
to be considered. I joined
RightTurn in 2009.
My background includes
degrees from Harvard and Cornell University Medical College. I currently serve on the faculty of Harvard Medical School’s Division on Addictions and
as Medical Director of Addictions at Cambridge
Health Alliance. I’m certified by the American
Board of Psychiatry and Neurology in general
psychiatry and addiction psychiatry.”

SUPPORTive HOUSING FOR MEN
“Research demonstrates that a person has a 27-times greater chance
of staying sober if they have a sense of belonging to
something larger than themselves”
a safe, supportive environment
At Right Turn, our supervised housing for men provides residents
with a chance to belong to a sober community where creative people
share a vision of recovery. Our program also emphasizes the development
of life skills and healthy relationships.
Conveniently located in Watertown Square, MA, the facility offers a creative
community for 6 men in recovery in a beautifully renovated, historic
New England house. The home-like setting offers private rooms with
access to outdoor gardens and private sitting rooms. The firepit in the
backyard is a great place for gathering and feeling part of a community.
our philosophy
The goal of our Supportive Housing Program is to help residents build a clean
and sober support network and to develop the skills that are required for sober
living beyond the safe structure of a treatment program. Residents will also
have full access to Right Turn’s IOP services including addiction counseling,
intensive psychotherapy, medication management, family therapy, and more.
building life skills
Addicted individuals often lose touch with the ordinary tasks of daily life, such
as budgeting, housekeeping, self-care and food preparation. In our Supportive
Housing Program, residents learn to rebuild these vital skills with our guidance.
This includes a renewed focus on health and wellness, nutrition and exercise.
To help residents in this regard, we provide an on-site weight room and local
gym membership. Likewise, to encourage healthy eating, we bring in local chefs
to assist in menu planning and preparation . In this way, we turn skill building
activities into a fun, community building experience.

creativity and sober support
Right Turn Supportive Housing for Men offers many opportunities to express individual creativity and
to feel part of a vital, creative community. Daily access to The Fuegos Music Room is one of many avenues for creative exploration. This fully equipped music room is open to all residents for practice and
rediscovering the kind of “healthy fun” so often lost to addiction. Rehearsing for Right Turn LIVE!’s
weekly jam sessions is a popular activity through the week. Performances are open to
the public every Saturday night at Right Turn LIVE! – the sober café.
“what’s next“? planning for success in sobriety
During the first few months of sobriety, the recovering addict is at heightened risk of relapse.
Given this reality, we are very focused on what happens when the program ends. Our hope is
that recovering addicts will leave with a sense that they are no longer alone – with
confidence that they are now part of a vital recovery community, fortified by new friendships and skills that will support a productive, substance-free life. To this end, our
“What’s Next” group is designed to help individuals identify their own personal vision
for a healthy future, and to help them take the next steps toward those goals. The
group focus is on three major life issues: Education, Employment, and Housing.
Our objective is to have specific mechanisms set in place to help individuals
start the next stage of recovery with new tools and a plan.
INTENSIVE OUTPATIENT PROGRAM (IOP)
“Recovery is not a one-step process. It takes place incrementally
over time. Our IOP reflects that by offering a continuum
of care with support at every stage.”
Located in Arlington Center, MA, this 3 – 6 month early recovery program includes 3 Phases of Recovery.
Individuals attend groups, individual psychotherapy, family counseling, and psychiatry, as needed,
along with addiction education, relapse prevention, and daily creativity workshops.
For the individual, the emphasis is on learning to cope with cravings and urges, understanding
a clean and sober lifestyle, managing symptoms of early recovery and building a supportive
network in sobriety. Many people in early recovery will experience symptoms of depression,
anxiety, ADD, ADHD and trauma. For this reason, comprehensive assessment and on-going
evaluation is provided at all stages. Identification of early signs of withdrawal, coping
skills and recovery strategies are key components of the program.
fam ily work
Recognizing that addiction and substance abuse disorders cause stress, confusion and anxiety for
family members, Right Turn works with a family specialist to offer an array of services designed to
educate family members about addiction and healthy family responses.
“Progression through Phase I, II and III is clinically driven,
and each phase is designed to build upon the progress, skills
and self-awareness of the previous stage.”
Intervention Services
An intervention is when family members and friends come together to help a chemically dependent person get help.
Interventions are considered successful when they result in the addict agreeing to enter a drug or alcohol treatment program.
Interventions have a much higher success rate when done under the guidance of an intervention professional.
CEO Woody Giessmann is a Board Registered Interventionist (BR-II) with the Association of Intervention
Specialists Credentialing Board who has helped many families through successful interventions.
“The intervention was obviously an emotional experience for me and my
family. Woody’s patience and calm manner allowed us to express our
fears and our concerns and determine what the next step should be.”

Creativity is so much a part of Right Turn, that we are an office
by day, and a stage by night. Whether it’s a famous rock star
on stage, or an aspiring local poet, our sober café,
Right Turn LIVE! gives recovering addicts a safe performance
venue. Even more importantly, it provides a community of
creative individuals who share the trauma of addiction and a
commitment to recovery. Our in-the-round performance space
creates a sense of intimacy between audience and performers,
and offers excellent sound quality. In this atmosphere, artistic
collaborations develop. Friendships grow. Art and music are
created. And healing may take place.
