Congratulations!!!!
Team Cargojet
It was a great honour accepting the Entrepreneur of the
Year award on behalf of our great team on October 7,
2004, at the Ernst and Young Gala Event Evening.
Ernst and Young Entrepreneur of the Year award honours
entrepreneurs who have demonstrated excellence, innovation, performance and personal commitment to their
business. This award certainly honours the entrepreneur in
each one of you and the commitment you bring to Cargojet.
Ernst & Young Entrepreneur of the Year Award
The environment today in the aviation business is
extremely turbulent. Through the efforts of our dedicated
and committed Cargojet team it has made it easier
for us to make this business a success. No doubt, we
have earned the loyalty of our customers by providing
unparallel on-time performance and excellent service.
To be continually successful and earn every pound of
business from our customers we must continue to provide
the best possible service and excel in all areas of our
operations while keeping our cost in control. I am counting
on each one of you to keep up the great effort and
continue to provide the competitive edge in the market
place in becoming the best cargo airline not only in Canada
but globally.
Congratulations to the One Team on behalf of Dan, Jamie
and myself for this great honour and award which is
proudly displayed in our reception area at our Head Office
in Mississauga.

“INFORMATION TECHNOLOGY - YOUR STRATEGIC PARTNER IN SUCCESS”
Anju Virmani Director of Information Technology
For any organization seeking to achieve
high performance, the role of Information
Technology has never been more vital.
Traditionally viewed as a facilitator of business,
more recently, innovative and successful
companies have come to view IT as a strategic
partner in their corporate business plan.
Companies use IT to move ahead of their
competition, viewing IT as a source of
competitive advantage and using IT to
empower their employees with tools to make
them successful. One of the most important
resources in any organization is "Information".
The extraordinary abundance and easy
accessibility of information mean that its very
nature is changing. The tools and technologies
used to gather and share information are
contributing to an ever-expanding list of uses
for information in business. IT is about
leveraging all these tools and making them
available to you, our ONE TEAM.
So let's talk about IT at Cargojet. Allow me to
take this opportunity to guide you through the
evolution of IT at Cargojet and introduce
you to Kevin Dsouza and Sohail Kayani,
your dedicated IT support team, and Wally
Fong who supports our very fragile and
temperamental Billing System affectionately
known as TLS.
A little over two years ago, IT at Cargojet
experienced its humble beginnings with the
help of a consulting company and established
its current infrastructure with two servers
running a mail/exchange server, and a file
server to store information. We had 10
desktops and a handful of laptops. Since then
we have made a significant investment in
our infrastructure, our hardware and our
software licensing. Today we have a server
room that boasts 18 servers running under a
Windows 2000 environment, using CITRIX to
deploy our applications across the country.
We provide technical support to over 200
users, some 100 desktops and 50 laptops and
we do it 24 hours a day 7 day a week. On an
average day we support 10 to 20 issues
ranging in various levels of priority to users
across the country. Making information
available to the appropriate people at the
appropriate time is a task of the highest
priority. High speed Internet has been made
available to all stations, making it possible
for everyone to share information across
the country. This enables us to support
applications for all the business area, all
deployed over Citrix to the twelve stations
across Canada. Not only does the support
team provide infrastructure support to all these
applications, they also provide services for
users ranging from to hooking up printers to
providing support for the Blackberries.
In the past two years, our business has
overcome many challenges and has grown
exponentially. Our infrastructure, too, has
faced many challenges. The amount of
information we manage on our servers has
more than quadrupled in this time, our files
have grown, and our backup tapes are full.
We seem to be bursting at the seams as we
outgrow our servers. An important aspect
of our job is to manage the growth of this
information and technology and the risk
associated with it.
Still there is more to IT than meets the eye.
Our job doesn't end with supporting users,
providing new equipment, and maintaining
existing equipment. It is also our mandate to
protect the resources of Cargojet, including
its data, information and the hardware and
infrastructure. To this end, we constantly
ensure that our networks are safe from virus
attacks and hackers, and that our networks
are kept fine-tuned, up and running 100% of
the time.
IT is currently managing several new projects.
We are working on improving our infrastructure
in terms of connectivity across the country.
We are partnering with telecommunication
companies to find innovative and cost-effective ways of communicating with our
stations. We are exploring new and emerging
technologies that have evolved with the
Internet Protocol such as Voice over IP.
Because of the nature of our business, it is
imperative to provide a disaster recovery
infrastructure that serves us well in times of
disasters like power failures and fires. We are
exploring options for our Disaster Recovery
plans.
In addition, we are just about ready to launch
our intranet site. This site will provide a means
for employees to communicate with others
efficiently and for management to share
information with the employees. We are
constantly looking at opportunities to make the
best use of our valuable resources, information
and people.
But this is only the beginning. A high-performance IT plan involves managing far more
than traditional business data. It involves
recognizing inefficiencies in our current
systems and applications, and managing the
risk associated with them as well as identifying
opportunities for streamlining organizational
processes. Most of all IT deals with helping
you to manage change effectively. Today, we
have access to information from real-world
observations, made possible by the growing
prevalence of RFID tags, sensors, web
cameras and GPS, as well as information from
shared data banks and the Internet. And
thanks to the advancement of wireless and
mobile technologies we are able to tap and
share information, much more readily. The
Blackberry deployment a Cargojet has been
most readily embraced and is by far the most
successful project to date.
IT at Cargojet is about leveraging this vast
amount of information to work for us. IT is
about supporting you and partnering with
you to identify the right tools so that we as
a company can reach greater heights in
innovation and performance.
IT does not exist in isolation. We are your
partners in business. If you see a need in your
area of business that would benefit from
innovation and technology, we encourage you
to talk to us. Get us involved early, so that we
may help you to identify resources and
technologies that are instrumental to achieving
your goals. Please feel to drop by and ask
questions or exchange ideas or even ask for a
tour of our server room. We are proud to be
supporting our ONE TEAM at Cargojet!
“PULLING TOGETHER IN WINNIPEG”
The Cargojet / Customer team came in
second with a time of 8.43 seconds.
When the dust settled we realized that we
had pulled the plane with only 19 people.
Our 20th participant, Doug, was busy
positioning the plane after every pull and
did not know we had added him to our
employee list.
The event drew more people and interest
than any previous kick-off celebration.
Over 600 people came out to cheer on
their company team, and witness them
pull an aircraft.

On Monday September 20, 2004 The
United Way Campaign for funds kicked
off the week with an aircraft pull at the
Stevenson Aviation and Aerospace
Training Centre in Winnipeg.
Lynn Bishop was approached to see if
Cargojet was interested in providing an
aircraft for the event and history was
made.
The initial limit of 12 teams was set,
containing 20 "pullers", with as many
cheerleaders as you could get. Response
quickly grew beyond the initial 12 teams
to 20.
When Lynn advised his management
team at a meeting that the aircraft would
be brought to Winnipeg as part of the
United Way kick-off, it was suggested
that Cargojet enter a team as well.
Rather than having just Cargojet
employees the decision was made to
ask customers to join us as a team to
"pull together for United Way".
An invitation went out to all the major
customers, to ask for their participation.
Couriers, Forwarders, and Carriers, were
all included. DHL, ICS , Kuehne & Nagel,
Geologistics, Bax Global, EGL, &
Panalpina, all replied that they would
participate in the pull with our Cargojet
employees.
Finally the day arrived, cool and windy,
however that did not diminish the spirit
of the 20 teams waiting anxiously to pull
the 155,000 lb plane. YWG AME, Doug
Rowsome had the plane delivered to the
site and managed the repositioning of it
after each team finished.
Our flight crew Capt.Colin Brazier, F/O
James Strangway & S/O Marco Disimoni
worked the brakes (and did impromptu
tours of the aircraft for our customers
after the event was over).
The target United Way had established
was 15.7 Million, so the team that pulled
the plane 15.7 feet in the least amount of
time would be the winner.
All the customers have emailed what a
good time it was and are determined to
win next year!
On this particular day we were pulling
together, with our customers for a
worthwhile cause. However, every night,
Cargojet's main focus, is to pull it all
together for each our valued customers!
