The historic Guenther House is the riverfront home built in 1860 by Carl Hilmar Guenther, a European immigrant, who set- tled in San Antonio and founded Pioneer Flour Mills. The original home was a single story structure built from stones quarried from an area near what is now the San Antonio Zoo. The mortar joining these stones was made from rocks gathered downstream. The home was remodeled in 1902 giving the Guenther House the look it has today. The entire top floor is referred to as The Roof Garden; a spacious, airy, former ballroom with an adjoining open terrace overlooking the San Antonio River. The main room features its original porcelain tile floors, ceiling lanterns, wall sconces, charming brick fireplace and fountain. PLEASE NOTE: The Roof Garden is located on the third floor of the Guenther House and is inaccessible to those unable to negotiate stairs. Also, given the layout of this historic home, reservations will be limited 45 guests. RSVP to scfshreservations@gmail.com or call Leonie Ikimau at 210-749-2761 no later than 5pm on February 13th. See below for the Spouses’ Club reservation policy. Reservation policy: reservations or cancellations must be made by the stated deadline (usually 5 p.m. the Wednesday before each luncheon). Anyone needing to cancel who does not do so by this deadline will be responsible for the full cost of the luncheon. Thanks also to Janice’s two daughters, Pat Kirk and her sister, Joy Kellner and daughter Justina Moloney , Donna Budjenska, Linda Uberti, Shari Calder and her daughters and friends. Customers are finding the store and seem very pleased by what we have to offer! Business is very good, our consignments remain consistent and we receive an abundance of donations! Currently, Christmas decorations are half price plus we have held a variety of sales such as 50% off and/or $5.00 bag sales of Thrift Shop property which surely moved a lot of off season merchandise! FYI - We are no longer taking winter clothing and will start accepting summer things on March 5th. Valentine items will be taken as of Jan. 23rd followed by Easter on Feb. 27th. We will be closed for Spring Break the week of Mar. 11-15. The Thrift Shop now has a Facebook page which provides this kind of information and we are accepting email addresses for those who wish to receive pertinent notifications. On a VERY HAPPY note, we are extremely proud to report from Oct. through Dec., the Thrift Shop generated an available profit of $14,400.00 and the money has been deposited in the Spouses’ Club Ways and Means account!! This is an incredible amount of money for such a short time and it is due to the hard work of our dedicated volunteers!!!! With this kind of suc- cess, our club should not need to expend any further effort on fundraising other than the Thrift Shop!!!!! So, please join our team to ensure these profits continue as we move into 2013. We are open for business every Wed., Thurs. and the 3rd Sat. of ea. month from 9AM to 2PM with consignments taken from 9AM to 1PM. Tuesdays from 9AM to 2PM are volunteer work days when we pull expired items and get ready for the new week. Even if you only volunteer a few hours, your time would be greatly appreciated!! We look forward to seeing you in the store soon, whether to work, consign or shop!! This is our project so please support it with your enthusiastic participation and help spread the news we are open by sharing copies of the enclosed Thrift Shop flyer (page 3) with all your coffee and FRG groups, etc.!!!!!! By Shari Calder and Nancy Forn, Spouses Out and About Coordinators POSTSCRIPTS February 2013 Page 6 Tech Corner: Microsoft Surface tablet hits a home run By Rich Arnold, Webmaster We wanted to replace our daughter’s computer so we took the leap with the new Microsoft Surface tablet. Since we were replacing a Windows computer, we wanted this device to be something she could easily use for school while providing that cool factor that a kid would want. Early indications are that we’ve hit a home run. The new Windows 8 operating system, specifically Windows 8 RT which is running on this tablet, is designed to be very touch friendly compared to previous versions of Windows. It runs apps, similar to Apple and Android. That means you can’t go to the PX and buy software to load on it. MS has also included their new Office 2013 Home and Student with it. Pros: Light, high quality materials, USB, Office, touch cover keyboard (extra cost), Windows 8 as touch software is easy to use—Apple like. Like other Windows computers, it allows for multiple user accounts, so a parent can have admin privileges while the child has lower privileges. Along these lines too are that Windows has Family Safety built in for monitoring or limiting your child’s use of the tablet Cons: App selection is a little thin, there is a learning curve, it’s not cheap Conclusion: Tablet computing is here. Can this replace your home computer? Yes in most cases. If there are certain programs that you need to run, the Surface Pro which is due out soon, will run the version of Windows which is not limited to programs in the app store. Evening Book Club had a spicy January discussion at Firebird Mexican Restaurant By Shari Calder, Evening Book Club Coordinator Evening book club enjoyed a Mexican feast at Firebird for our January discussion. Our February gathering meets February 5 at 6:30pm at Urban Taco. It is located at 290 E Basse Suite 105, in the Quarry Village near Trader’s Joe. We’ll be discussing Beautiful Ruins by Jess Walter. Please RSVP to Shari Calder at shari_calder@yahoo.com so we know to look for you at the restaurant. Happy Reading, Shari Calder Evening book club coordinator Page 7 Daytime Bunco accidentally skips January, but ready to go for February By Dee Martell, Daytime Bunco Coordinator Our normally on-the-ball Bunco administrator, Dee Martell (me,) apparently lost her mind in Las Vegas over the New Year's Holiday, and completely forgot about January's Bunco game! GASP!! Should that ever happen again,( and it's entirely possible as I am preparing for retirement and a move, as well as my daughter's graduation, literally ALL AT THE SAME TIME) please refer to your monthly newsletter for the pertinent information. Also, I can always be reached at 830 -714-7374 for any questions, concerns, or a wake up call! Hahaha! Now even though it's a month late, let me recognize December's winner's. We skipped Bunco and instead played 3 rounds of LRC. After a fierce battle between Maggie Konopa and Karen Carter, Maggie took the cash for round 1. After repeatedly getting to the second to last dollar, Donna Prewitt finally took home some cash in round 2! And finally, on a VERY short third round, Carryn Sheehan quickly eliminated the competition to steal the center pot...surprise!! Thank you to our lovely hostess Roma Litton for letting our raucous group into her beautiful home. This month we will play at Nancy Forn's house on Tuesday, February 5th at 11:00am. Please let Nancy know you'll be attending. She can be reached at 818-326-0627 or by email at nancy.forn@gmail.com. Remember to bring something for a potluck luncheon along with $5 for Bunco and an optional $3 for LRC. I know Nancy is planning on a Valentine's theme, so dig out something red...or come dressed as a heart, your choice! Just kidding, but hey, I'm game if you are! Evening Bunco players didn’t let January rain stop them from playing B U N By Mary Ann Haun, Evening Bunco Coordinator It was a dark and stormy night... Sixteen brave women slogged to Holly's house laughing in the face of predicted vicious weather. If we were forced to board the Ark, we would do it together bringing the bunco dice with us! Holly greeted us with warmth for our damp selves. Delicious food and cosmo punch gladdened the group while the wind and rain battered the house. Now we shouted bunco! and groaned snake eyes! in defiance. Holly believes that 2013 will be the New Year of Light. So, bunco winners waved a glowing rainbow star wand bestowing favor on each bunco player. Or was that the cosmo punch? If anyone had a magical night, it was Glenda. She took the money for most buncos, but she could have had wins and Evening Bunco players were treated to these delicious cupcakes made by Jen Iott. See page 10 for recipe. snake eyes as well. I want her to wave the wand over me, please. Holly had the next highest win count. Pat took the snake pot, and Patsy was the biggest loser. Jen Iott is quickly getting a reputation for her baking skills. She dazzled us with champagne cupcakes topped with handmade 2013's. Those of you who were unable to join us can enjoy her treat at home. (See recipe on page 10.) Like in Vegas, what happens at Holly's, stays. There was great laughter, silliness and fun. Too much fun because I can't remember who won LRC. If the editor would like to add that postscript, I am sure the winner would appreciate the credit. (Ed. note…it was Nancy!) Happy New Year, Sisters of the Traveling Dice! Luncheon Dates March 19, 2013 Joint Services Lunch hosted by LOSC April 16, 2013 FIESTA!! My name is Ed Briand. I am currently enrolled in a yoga teacher training program here in San Antonio. A requirement for completion of the program is that I teach a series of six classes to beginning yoga students. In order to accomplish this, I would like to offer these classes as a gift to the Spouses Club (this is not a marketing endeavor). I am offering six classes (no cost) beginning on 11 February 2013. The classes will be at my home on Fort Sam Houston, Monday and Wednesday evenings, 6:00-7:15. I am looking for four people interested in learning what yoga is all about. The classes will be a very gentle introduction to yoga. Each class will build on the previous one, so if you are interested, I ask that you make a commitment to attend as many classes as you can. However, if you can't make it to all of the classes, don't worry! Life is unpredictable! I know many people have thought about trying yoga but haven’t because of doubts about their abilities. The main thing that seems to prevent people from trying yoga is the belief that you have to be flexible to do yoga. You don’t! My classes are designed to allow you to work with your body as it is today. No flexibility is required. Adults of any age are welcome. A little about me and my background: I am an active duty Colonel in the U.S. Army Veterinary Corps. I work on Fort Sam Houston at the AMEDD Center and School. I have been in the Army for 22 years and have been doing yoga for about ten years. Last September, I enrolled in yoga teacher training. The training is through Yoga-Yoga Studio in Austin, and is conducted at Synergy Studio here in San Antonio. My lovely wife, Kim, is a Registered Yoga Teacher (RYT-200), so when the opportunity came up to attend teacher training, I jumped at it. My long term goal is to volunteer-teach special populations that could benefit from yoga. The training is complete in April, so for full disclosure, I am still in training and am not yet a certified teacher. The classes I will give during this series have been approved by my teacher-trainer as appropriate for me to teach to beginners. I hope to see you in my classes! I only have room for four students, so if you are interested, please contact me as soon as possible. I am happy to answer any questions you have. Also, in case you have allergies, please be aware that I do have pets in the house (two very nice Greyhounds and a cat). They will not have access to the room where I will hold the classes. I can be reached at: Email: brianddvm@gmail.com Home Phone: (210)257-0590 Cell: (210)577-8728 Broadway Across America For the Spouses' Club of Ft. Reading 50 Shades of Grey. Careful - 50 shades is a trilogy, and reading the first one will make you commit to reading the others! And we recommend January's book, Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn, to those readers who love a good suspense. Champagne Cupcakes Ingredients Champagne cupcakes: 1/2 cup unsalted butter, softened 1 cup sugar 2 eggs 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 3/4 cups flour 1/2 tsp baking soda 1/4 tsp baking powder 1/4 tsp salt 1/2 cup sour cream 1/2 cup sparkling wine Champagne Buttercream Frosting: 3-3 1/2 cups powdered sugar 1 cup unsalted butter, softened 1/2 teaspoon vanilla extract 3-4 tablespoons sparkling wine POSTSCRIPTS Feb 2013 Instructions 1. For the cupcakes: Preheat oven to 350°F. Line cupcake pan with paper or foil liners (I used gold foil liners). 2. In a large bowl, beat sugar and butter together until light and fluffy. Add eggs, one at a time, mixing after adding each one. Mix in vanilla. 3. In a medium bowl, combine flour with baking soda, baking powder, and salt. Set aside. 4. In a small bowl, carefully mix sour cream and sparkling wine together. 5. Alternate adding flour and sparkling wine mixtures to large bowl, beginning and ending with flour. 6. Add 1/4 cup of batter to each cupcake liner (they should be a little over half full). 7. Bake for 18-20 minutes, until a toothpick inserted in the middle comes out clean. Let cool completely. 8. For the frosting: beat powdered sugar and butter together on medium for 2 minutes, until light. Add vanilla and sparkling wine, then beat for another minute. Pipe or spread onto cooled cupcakes. *It helps to refrigerate the frosting at least 30 minutes to harden it a bit before applying to the cupcakes. *For the 2013 chocolate cupcake toppers, I just melted some chocolate chips and piped them onto wax paper by hand. Refrigerate 1 hour before putting on cupcake tops. Spouses’ Club of the Fort Sam Houston Area P. O. Box 340209 Fort Sam Houston, TX 78234-0209 Visit us online! www.scfsh.com www.facebook.com/scfsh
