November 27 ,2015 Lake Forest Home Journal The Open Door Hello Everyone – Another week is upon us! Please review the following updates: A memorial service for Helen Schmidt will occur here on behalf of her family. It will be held on Monday, November 30th at 2pm here at Lake Forest. Join as we honor her while offering support to Rudy and his daughters. The celebration for Lake Forest is just around the corner so to speak. Please be sure your response card has been turned in to the office. Cathryn, in Janet’s absence, is collecting your information so we can plan accordingly. A seating plan is being developed in order to preserve your typical seating preferences as much as possible while accommodating the additional attendees. Please understand this may result in an unfamiliar face or two at your dining table for that evening. Recently, several of you have had clothing ruined during use of the laundry facilities. This occurred due to items being inadvertently and unintentionally being added to the washer/dryer cycle. Prior to your routine laundry activities; we respectfully ask everyone to empty pockets, shake your towels and linens and be sure there is nothing other than washables being placed into the appliances. By not doing so, you run the risk of causing your neighbors to incur unnecessary expenses in terms of replacing clothing. In addition, the proper functioning of the equipment may be compromised. Our first dusting of snow is upon us. Please be careful out there! Lastly, I want to extend my wishes for a safe and healthy Thanksgiving to each of you. I will be out of town Wednesday afternoon through the weekend. However, my fellow Lake Forest colleagues have my contact information in the event of any emergencies and I am accessible. Be Well! - Kevin Shelly is on call November 30th Our Lake Forest Website www.onlakeforest.org www.facebook.com/Lake ForestSeniorCommunity Activities Monday, November 30, 2015 11:00am Exercise 12:00pm Soup & Salad 2:00pm Memorial Service for Helen S. Friendship Committee Notes We are glad to see Bill L. home after a stay in the hospital. BOOK REPORT: Alistair MacLean, “The Way to Dusty Death" This is a mystery/suspense story and I was attracted to it because of the Formula 1 racing background. In a former life I was a huge fan of Formula 1 racing, and eagerly waited for my monthly issue of "Road and Track" magazine to arrive so I could read about the latest Formula 1 Grand Prix races, and see how my hero, Stirling Moss, the British ace was doing. A big thrill was to actually see him in action! I went with friends to Watkins Glen, the track where the Grand Prix of the Unite States was run. Great fun!! Well, back to the book. The story is about a champion Formula 1 driver who is experiencing unusual accidents and decides to investigate. How he does this lead to some hair raising car chases - I will not go into detail; I don't want to spoil the suspense! This is a good read, even if you are not a racing fan. The book is in our library in the mystery section! How much do you remember? TRIVIA FUN: THE 1940'S 1. (This article was submitted by a Resident. Author unknown) If you travel at all an stay at any leading hotel chains, you’ve encountered the ubiquitous make-your-own Belgian waffle. Pour the packaged mix in, flip the waffle maker and in a few minutes you have a freshly made, hot waffle. So how do hotel breakfast-bar waffles stack up nutritionally? Numbers vary depending on the chain, but one waffle without syrup contains about 220 calories, 2 grams of saturated fat, 25 grams of carbohydrates, 2 grams of fiber, 2 grams of sugars, 420 milligrams of sodium and 6 grams of protein. Add 1.5 ounces of syrup and you increase those numbers by 160 calories and 44 grams of carbs (43 of them sugars). A “butter” packet adds another 40 calories and a little saturated fat. Better choices, if available, include yogurt, fresh fruit and bran or Cheerios 'type cereal. Muffins are a gamble: A healthy – sounding “banana nut” muffin, for example, might have double the calories, triple the saturated fat and six times the sugar of the “harvest bran” muffin right beside it. Says Tufts’ Jeffrey Blumberg, “For breakfasts, I generally leave the hotel and find a place to buy fruit or a yogurt.” The Christmas Gift Fund box is next to the bird cage and will be available there for donations until Monday morning, December 7th. Please make check out to: Lake Forest Resident Council. In the Memo section, write “Gift Fund” or “Christmas Gift Fund.” Week of December 7, 2015 Turn into Kitchen by Saturday, November 28 Name:__________________________________ Circle the Main Meal and the Sides You Like _____________________________________________________________________________________ Monday – December 7 (5:30 PM) Cream of Vegetable Soup Herbed Pork Chop /Bleu Cheese Butter Roasted Potatoes Dinner Roll OR Green Beans Cottage Cheese w/Fruit Cold Plate Apple Pie OR SF Jell-O _____________________________________________________________________________________ Tuesday – December 8 (5:30 PM) Lentil Vegetable Soup Apricot Honey Glazed Chicken Breast Squash Gratin Sunflower Bread OR Peppers & Onions Swordfish Kabob Rice Pudding OR SF Homemade Applesauce _____________________________________________________________________________________ Wednesday – December 9 (5:30 PM) Tossed Salad Cheese Ravioli w/Meat Sauce Roasted Zucchini OR Garlic Bread Grilled Pastrami Sandwich w/Cheese Fruit Bars OR Low Fat Chocolate Mousse _____________________________________________________________________________________ Thursday – December 10 (5:30 PM) Tomato Soup Slow Roasted Beef Corn Pudding Fresh Baked Bread OR Asian Slaw BBQ Pulled Chicken Pumpkin Whoopee Pies OR Fresh Fruit _____________________________________________________________________________________ Friday – December 11 (5:30 PM) Cucumber, Onion, Chickpea Salad Baked Salmon Wild Rice Pilaf Wheat Bread OR Asparagus Vegetable Frittata Ice Cream Sundae OR Fruit _____________________________________________________________________________________ Saturday – December 12 (5:30 PM) Soup Du Jour Boiled Dinner Potatoes Dinner Roll OR Cabbage & Carrots Chicken Sandwich w/Gouda & Onions Peach Cobbler OR SF Ice Cream _________________________________________________________________________________________ Sunday – December 13 (12:30 PM - Brunch) Cantaloupe & Celery Salad Pancakes Bacon Scrambled Eggs Lemon Poppy Muffins Pork Roast Mashed Potatoes Broccoli Lemon-Almond Butter Cake Week of December 7, 2015 Turn into Kitchen by Saturday, November 28 Name:__________________________________ Circle the Main Meal and the Sides You Like _____________________________________________________________________________________ Monday – December 7 (5:30 PM) Cream of Vegetable Soup Herbed Pork Chop /Bleu Cheese Butter Roasted Potatoes Dinner Roll OR Green Beans Cottage Cheese w/Fruit Cold Plate Apple Pie OR SF Jell-O _____________________________________________________________________________________ Tuesday – December 8 (5:30 PM) Lentil Vegetable Soup Apricot Honey Glazed Chicken Breast Squash Gratin Sunflower Bread OR Peppers & Onions Swordfish Kabob Rice Pudding OR SF Homemade Applesauce _____________________________________________________________________________________ Wednesday – December 9 (5:30 PM) Tossed Salad Cheese Ravioli w/Meat Sauce Roasted Zucchini OR Garlic Bread Grilled Pastrami Sandwich w/Cheese Fruit Bars OR Low Fat Chocolate Mousse _____________________________________________________________________________________ Thursday – December 10 (5:30 PM) Tomato Soup Slow Roasted Beef Corn Pudding Fresh Baked Bread OR Asian Slaw BBQ Pulled Chicken Pumpkin Whoopee Pies OR Fresh Fruit _____________________________________________________________________________________ Friday – December 11 (5:30 PM) Cucumber, Onion, Chickpea Salad Baked Salmon Wild Rice Pilaf Wheat Bread OR Asparagus Vegetable Frittata Ice Cream Sundae OR Fruit _____________________________________________________________________________________ Saturday – December 12 (5:30 PM) Soup Du Jour Boiled Dinner Potatoes Dinner Roll OR Cabbage & Carrots Chicken Sandwich w/Gouda & Onions Peach Cobbler OR SF Ice Cream _________________________________________________________________________________________ Sunday – December 13 (12:30 PM - Brunch) Cantaloupe & Celery Salad Pancakes Bacon Scrambled Eggs Lemon Poppy Muffins Pork Roast Mashed Potatoes Broccoli Lemon-Almond Butter Cake
