2015 Madison County Fair
2015 Madison County Fair published by 2 Saturday, July 11, 2015 2015 MADISON COUNTY Fair Madison Press New hog barn to hog attention at fair By Dean Shipley dshipley@civitasmedia.com Doug Peterman was eagerly awaiting a visitor from Clark County. He would be the county’s electrical inspector. Once he signed off on the new Beck’s Hog Barn’s wiring, the Madison County Agricultural Society could be issued an occupancy permit. The barn of new construction, and another facility to its rear, are the latest additions to the fairgrounds and the newest assets to the community, thanks to the hard work of many in the community. Peterman, a member of the jr. fair sales committee, and others have pulled together to create a fresh face on the fairgrounds, which will host the 126th edition of the Madison County Fair July 12-18. Numerous businesses, the county commissioners and private donors have pooled resources and brought about a renaissance on the grounds. The hog barn will be furnished with 200 portable hog pens. They were assembled by inmates at the Marion Correctional Facility from materials paid for by the sales committee. To recoup those funds, the sales committee has offered anyone with $200 an opportunity for sponsorship of a pen. Peterman said the program has proceeded well with a few sponsorship opportunities remaining. To help out a weighty situation, two donors have come forward to provide scales for animal weighins. A fund set up in remembrance of Bob Murry has purchased one scale and Neil Babb, former Madison County engineer, has donated another livestock scale. The other new buildings, the Eby Arena, and the Coughlin Community Center, will host numerous events during the fair. The grandstand will host events starting Sunday, July 12 with harness racing. A county with a lengthy heritage of raising and racing trotters and pacers, colts and fillies, will host racing all afternoon with post time at noon. One of the harness races will feature all female drivers in the Ohio Ladies Pace. Gerald Henry, spokesman for the racing event, said it will not be known which race it will be until the competitors draw. Those who like their horsepower in the form of diesel and gasolinepowered engines will want to come out the evenings of Tuesday, Wednesday or Friday for truck and tractor pulls. The Central Ohio Truck Pullers will hold its event Tuesday evening with its full array of events diesel, modified, pro gas events. The Wednesday event will be the NTPA Tractor pull with FWD diesel trucks, light pro stock, heavy super stock and modified tractors. Friday will feature two-wheel drive trucks, minis, light super stock and super farm tractors. Thursday’s grandstand events will include a hot dog eating contest ($5 entry fee), 6 p.m. and at 7 p.m as well as Triple H rodeo barrel racing and bull riding. Saturday at 5 p.m. ladies will test their arms with a skillet throwing contest and at 7 p.m. a demolition derby. For kids, earlier at noon, the sheep arena will host a pedal pull. Members of 4-H and FFA clubs will be busy preparing their fair entries, animal and non-animal, to show the county their skills in their chosen areas of competition. They are events in which everybody wins because everybody, as they compete, will learn about not only their entry, but also about themselves. Speaking for the Madison County commissioners, Commissioner David Dhume said the 126th Madison County Fair will be a great one. “We’re feeling renewed energy, renewed ownership of the fairgrounds. With the cooperation of Dean Shipley | The Madison Press Heritage Cooperative volunteers, Dave Monnin, top, and John Arthur, apply green paint to the fairgrounds sign at the Elm Street entrance to the Madison County Fairgrounds. The Sheehys of Custom Sign Co. of Columbus donated new “skins” for the sign and Marshall Electric repaired the lighting. The plan calls for it eventually to be replaced with a digital sign. A fund has been started for that project, said Bob Richardson, marketing representative for the ag society. the fair board and the sales committee, the fair is more prominent and important than it has been in years,” Dhume said. Dhume said with the renewed enthusiasm surrounding the fair he expects animal entries to be at overflow capacity. “The new hog barn will be full with some overflow,” Dhume said. The barn was erected with the cooperation of the commissioners and local businesses. The commissioners offered a two dollarsper-one-dollar match to donations to the project. It was the same as was offered for the Eby Arena and Coughlin Community Center. “We’re really pleased with the two for one commitment,” he said. “It’s been an overwhelming success as far as we’re concerned.” Dean Shipley can be reached at 740-852-1616, ext. 1617, on Facebook at Dean Shipley or via Twitter @DeanAShipley. The public will certainly want more than a peek inside the new Beck’s Hog Barn on the Madison County Fairgrounds. By fair time, all the pens will be erected. Many of the 200 pens are already sponsored. Dean Shipley | The Madison Press The Beck’s Hog barn sits adjacent to the Coughlin Community Center and the Eby Arena on the Madison County Fairgrounds. The new structure stands as another asset for the community. 2015 MADISON COUNTY FAIr Madison Press Saturday, July 11, 2015 3 Dean Shipley | The Madison Press Olivia Looby, of the Starlight Riders 4-H Club, left, and David Harris, of the Canaan Pathfinders 4-H Club, fasten pieces of display walls together in the Della Selsor Building on the Madison County Fairgrounds.
