CALAMITY JANE
There are so many stories
about Calamity Jane that were
exaggerated or downright
false — especially the ones
Jane herself told —
that it’s hard to get
a true picture of this
legendary character.
Here’s what we know:
Martha Jane Canary
was born in Missouri in
1852, the oldest of six
children. By 1867, both
parents were dead, and
15-year-old Jane, living
in Wyoming, supported
her younger siblings as a
dishwasher, cook, nurse, ox
team driver, dance-hall girl,
occasional lady of the night
and later Army scout.
In 1876 she
joined Wild
Bill Hickok
and Charlie Utter traveling by
wagon train to Deadwood. As
far as we know, she and Wild
Bill were not terribly close,
despite her later claims.
She was a wild, hard-drinking
woman who dressed like a
man and swore better than
most. But she had
her compassionate
side, tending the sick.
Calamity Jane died
in the nearby town of
Terry in 1903, and was
buried at Mount Moriah
next to Wild Bill.

THOEN STONE
Historians will tell you that
gold was discovered in the
Black Hills in 1874 during the
Custer expedition. But
if the inscription on
the Thoen Stone
is to believed,
prospectors were
here 40 years
before that.
The sandstone
slab, about 8
by 10 inches,
was found
near Lookout
Mountain near
Spearfish in 1887 by the
Thoen brothers, who were
local stone masons. It bore
an inscription that began,
“Came to these hills in 1833
seven of us.” It ends with,
“All dead but me, Ezra Kind
…. Got our gold June 1834.
Got all the gold we could
carry. Our ponies all got by
the Indians. I have lost my
gun and nothing to eat and
Indians hunting me.”
The Thoen Stone is on
display at the Adams
Museum in Deadwood.
