O R G Exhibits Elmhurst Historical Museum proudly brought a diverse array of exhibits to the community in 2010 to fulfill its mission to collect, preserve, interpret and share the stories that are the history of Elmhurst. Whether the subject matter is local or international in scope, the goal is the same: to educate the public and foster an interest in history. Dwellings: A Study in Residential Architecture The Magical History Tour October 13, 2009 – May 23, 2010 June 15, 2010 – January 2, 2011 This case study of the character and diversity of suburban architecture as exemplified in the neighborhoods of Elmhurst highlighted work by Walter Burley Griffin and Frank Lloyd Wright, and included a self-guided architectural tour of central Elmhurst. The history of magic and Chicago’s ties to this mysterious art were presented in a family-friendly exhibit featuring fascinating artifacts from local collectors. Magicians such as Jay Marshall, Marshall Brodien, and former Elmhurst resident, Dr. Harlan Tarbell, were highlighted. Beyond Baseball: The Life of Roberto Clemente February 2, 2010 – April 11, 2010 Chicago Area Premiere of a New Traveling Exhibit February 2 - April 11 2 febrero - 11 abril 120 E. Park Ave. Elmhurst, IL www.elmhursthistory.org Free Admission admisión gratis This exhibit was developed by the Museo de Arte de Puerto Rico with the Carimar Design and Research Studio, and organized by the Smithsonian Institution Traveling Exhibit Service. The exhibition was made possible by the generous support of the Smithsonian Latino Center. The story of the baseball legend, cultural hero, and international humanitarian brought visitors from throughout the Chicago area to see this national traveling exhibition from the Smithsonian Institution which was supplemented with Clemente memorabilia. Century City October 12, 2010 – February 27, 2011 In honor of the City of Elmhurst’s 100th year of incorporation, Century City illuminated how and why Elmhurst chose the progressive path of changing from a village to a city form of government, and how that decision still impacts the quality of life today. Image courtesy AP Photo The Drawn-Out History of Comic Books (off-site) Summer 2010 Of special note is the off-site exhibition—a first for the Elmhurst Historical Museum— of the 2009 exhibit, The Drawn-Out History of Comic Books, which was loaned to the Gail Borden Public Library in Elgin to support its summer reading program. The library reported a 26 percent increase in program participation and more than 226,000 visitors throughout the summer. L E A R N M O R E AT E L M H U R S T H I S T O RY.
