appropriations along the river. Howells
and Bidwell decided to get a jump on the
other group by cutting the telephone wires
so that it was impossible to phone Quincy.
They then sped to Quincy and located the
county recorder and filed their papers at
8:25 pm. Cornell’s men arrived 50
minutes later and thus lost the battle.
By Carolyn Stillman
In the beginning, there was a beautiful
valley. The North Fork of the Feather
River meandered through the valley. The
Northern Maidu tribe fished and hunted
along the banks of the river. It came to be
known as Big Meadows.
A number of families, most of Swiss
origin, settled there in the 1820’s. Most
had originally come looking for gold that
brought so many to the wilds of the
Northern California Mountains. But
many returned to their agricultural roots
when prospecting palled and developed
farms and ranches in the meadow. Butter
and dairy products from their productive
farms and beef from their cattle ranches
found their way to tables in Sacramento
and the Bay Area.
In 1867, Dr. William Pratt built a hotel
which he called Prattville Hotel.
Gradually a town developed around the
hotel and adopted its name from the hotel.
The bucolic life in the Big Meadows
continued undisturbed until the early part
of 1900.
Marilyn Quadrio’s informative book, Big
Meadows and Lake A lmanor, relates the
story of the creation of the lake. Julius
Howells, a civil engineer, had visited Big
Meadows in the early 1880’s. He
remembered the huge, well-watered

meadow through which the North Fork of
the Feather River flowed. His mind being
attuned to the possibilities of
hydroelectric power, he realized the
potential of damming the river at the end
of the valley. The North Fork carried the
promise of generating large amounts of
hydraulic energy in its drop of 4,350 feet
in the 74 miles between Big Meadows
and Oroville.
To make his plan a reality, he partnered
with the wealthy Earl Brothers, Edwin
and Guy, of San Francisco and Oakland.
They created Western Power Company
and began collecting the capital needed to
proceed with the venture. They assigned
Arthur Breed, an Oakland real estate
speculator/developer, to quietly obtain
options on the ranches in Big Meadows
and also Butt Valley. Augustus Bidwell
of Greenville assisted Breed in his
endeavors.
It became apparent that Greenville’s G. P.
Cornell had similar plans to develop Big
Meadows into a storage reservoir. The
two rival parties posted notices of water

We’re getting busy, again. The lake is high, the grass is green and we’re all lucky to
be here. That’s really all that needs to be said.
Before long, Great Western consolidated
control of the water rights in Big
Meadows and Butt Valley. Only one
roadblock remained prior to beginning
construction…the town of Prattville.
Prattville was a community of close to
100 people with stores, homes and two
hotels. Residents of the town saw no
reason to sell and give up their homes and
businesses, so plans for construction

I’m sure you’re curious, as am I, as to how our community
fared during last season’s drought conditions. As you may
remember, we were asked to cut usage back by 25%. I spoke
to Troy Henry at the Water Company and he told me that we
had done very well in June and July, but badly in August and
September. October we pulled back to normal which means we didn’t meet the
cutback level.
The weather is warming up, and we are beginning to see more
activity throughout the community. The level of the lake
continues to rise, the golf course and tennis courts 1 & 2 are
open, and many properties are doing spring cleaning. There are
many contractor projects going on, and we ask that you use caution on the
roadways.
Going forward, Troy felt we would still be asked to meet the 25% cutback but he
hasn’t received word from the State. As most of us know, February was
disastrously dry but in March we had a small miracle. More information will be
available in the next issue of the Newsletter following the determination of the
State’s requirements. Stay tuned!
Last month I began to share information that came out of last year’s Long Range
Planning Committee Survey. The committee continues to evaluate the feedback
that was received. Most recently, they have been reviewing individual comments
(of which there were many); grouping them into categories which are being
forwarded to other committees (e.g. Golf, Tennis, etc.). A sampling of comments
received (more than once) includes:

LAKE ALMANOR COUNTRY CLUB
BOARD OF DIRECTORS MEETING
AT THE CLUBHOUSE
MARCH 19, 2016
Board President, Nancy Foote, called this duly noticed regular meeting of Lake Almanor Country Club Board
of Directors to order at 8:30AM in the Clubhouse. There was a quorum present with Directors Dave
Blomgren, Mike Daly, President Nancy Foote, Vice President Mark Crager, Assistant Treasurer Dennis
George, Secretary Mark Fawver, and Eric Rudgers in attendance. Also present were General Manager Scott
Devereaux, and Recording Secretary Brenda Stoner.
MEMBER COMMENT: None.
SECRETARY’S REPORT: Foote made a motion to approve the minutes of the January 16, 2016 regular
Board of Directors meeting. Crager seconded the motion which passed unanimously. Rudgers made a
motion to approve the executive session minutes of the January 16, 2016 Board of Directors meeting. George
seconded the motion and it passed unanimously. Secretary Fawver read a statement that during the executive
session of the January 16, 2016 the Board of Directors of the Lake Almanor Country Club discussed legal
and contracts.
CORRESPONDENCE: A letter from a member talking about several subjects regarding dues and concerts.
The General Manager responded on February 4, 2016.
Devereaux said we have a small budget for this software and if we really like one that has modules that may
be the best way to get started and add other modules at a later date. He also said the office is working on
financial entries to close out 2015 Fiscal Year and will then forward to the Accountants so they can get draft
report back to us in March to go over before the tax return is filed in April. He asked Stoner to announce our
new employee. Stoner stated that a new employee for the Front Desk/Reception area was hired and her name
is Margo Ormiston, daughter of Peggy Lentz, and she said they’re happy to announce she is starting Monday,
March 21st.
Golf Course – Art Broughton and Devereaux have been working on the renovation of the irrigation system
and will discuss later in the meeting. The plan is to open April 1st to the 15th depending on weather.
Maintenance – Maintenance is ramping up for the pre-Season and still has some snow removal. They have
added the alley easement unit 2 and 2a on backside of Peninsula off Cedar Canyon for snow removal.
They’re also working on capital road improvements. Devereaux has authorized work to be done at Rec 1 and
they have also started putting up new signs.
Security – Security is advertising for seasonal gate attendants and is starting to put on new stickers on
vehicles.
Tennis – Tennis Courts are back on track. He spoke to two of the companies and has an appointment with a
third contractor. They’re looking at resurfacing or overlaying Courts 6 & 7 and he doesn’t think we will be
happy with overlay. We also need to install some type of drainage and need repairs on the fence. He isn’t
sure about the timing of these courts, but will provide periodic updates.
Music – Shirley Leschinsky brought us up to date with the concert series. Everyone is in place and we have
all contracts back but one. They have rooms for everyone except one on August 6th of which she is in need
of a room for 5 band members. She says they are also in budget.
Fawver asked about the raffles. Devereaux stated we have resolved that and there was paperwork that needed
to be sent in and that was being taken care of. State requires that no more than 10% of the monies can be
given away so we can’t really have a 50/50 raffle. Leschinsky stated that the paperwork along with payment
had already been sent in.
Unfinished Business: None.
NEW BUSINESS:
Devereaux spoke about three new policies he needed to get approved. The first is the Assessment Collection
See MINUTES, Page 4
FINANCIAL REPORT: Devereaux said we are still finishing 2015 and expect something from the auditors
next week or the week after. He said both he and Stoner have had multiple discussions with them and we
were down to a couple of account questions. He said this morning the Board of Directors received
preliminary 2016 January and February financial statements to give them a general idea of what is going on
for the first part of the new fiscal year. Bar revenues are up which is good. There were no surprises at this
point. George thanked Stoner and Nancy Philbrick in the office for their efforts on getting these to the Board
of Directors. Devereaux said the Board Members would be getting this type of financial statement every
month.
COMMITTEE REPORTS:
Architectural Review Committee Chair Cliff Shelton said it’s been rather quiet. He said there were no new
starts. There were a few minor projects like a detached garage, paint project, and a driveway project. Foote
had a question regarding initiating ruling of drains under driveways. Shelton said he and Mike Bagby had
discussions on this issue and they have tried to persuade members to put in “valley gutters” (a little swale
close to the edge of the road a couple of inches deep) instead of culverts in the future, wherever possible.
Clubhouse Committee Chair, Donna Smith reported that the budget for the clubhouse restaurant chairs
wouldn’t buy new ones, so they are moving forward to recover the existing chairs and have maintenance
refinish the wood to a darker stain. She was trying to get this completed by May 1st.
Firewise Committee – Cliff Shelton spoke in Barbara MacArthur’s absence. The community wildfire
protection plan is out for signatures. They just need the last couple of signatures which went out this week.
They should have these back by the next meeting on April 6, 2016.
Foote asked if there really was an Ad Hoc Road Committee and the answer was yes it was Bob Feeney and
the General Manager.
GENERAL MANAGER’S REPORT: Administration: Devereaux stated the payroll outsource was
nearly complete and we should see many benefits from this. We’re looking at five new software programs
and should have some preliminary information back soon. We want to get this selected by the end of May
and then we can go through the process as to how we will implement. The Main issue is the accounting
package. Some packages include everything from accounting, data base management, website, and more.
Some also include ARC permitting. Crager suggested that the Rental Registration Forms be available online.

Policy. A motion to approve this policy was made by Blomgren and seconded by George and passed
unanimously.
The second policy is the Capitalization of Fixed Assets policy. A motion to approve this policy was made by
Daly and seconded by Crager and passed unanimously.
The third policy is a revision to the existing Conflict of Interest Policy. A motion to approve this policy was
made by Rudgers and seconded by Blomgren and passed unanimously.
An Unbudgeted Capital Expenditure for the bar flooring was discussed for $1,804. There was discussion
about line items in reserve. A motion to approve this unbudgeted capital expenditure item was made by
George and seconded by Crager and passed unanimously.
Devereaux stated the Long Range Planning Committee was evaluating the survey and they had overwhelming
support of a new Food truck at the Rec 1 area. Staff would like to move forward and search for an
independent Food Truck owner. Blomgren checked with the County and was told the same rules apply for a
food truck or a restaurant. We would be looking for a licensed food truck so they would be responsible for
all licensing and requirements by County. We would put out an advertisement in the paper with a simple
RFP. The board agreed to let Devereaux look into this further.
Septic work at the Rental House was explained by Stoner. A lot of investigation was done and so far, after
flushing an electronic device, it looks as though there is an old redwood tank that is disintegrating. We need
to have approval to delve into this further to determine what needs to be done. There were three bids
included in the board package and she was asking for a motion to approve moving forward with one of these
contractors to solve the mystery of what is going on with the septic tank and leach fields. A motion was
made by Foote to move forward using Turner Excavating to investigate and repair or replace what is needed
on this septic project not to exceed $7,795. Motion was seconded by George and passed unanimously.
Devereaux spoke about the irrigation project for the golf course which we had budgeted $361,000 for 3 holes.
We had a golf course architect put a plan together for the final six holes (#1-6). We received two bids for
this project and the bids were within $2,000 of each other. The total for six holes is $540,000, which is
actually under budget if you doubled the $361,000 which would be $722,000. Even though we didn’t have
You’ve got
all six holes budgeted at the same time, we would be saving $182,000 to do them all now. Devereaux said
that we have the money in the reserve and should still end the year with a surplus of about 1.5 million which
is still a healthy reserve. He would like to accept the low bid and ask for 5% contingency ($27,000) so he
would want authority to spend $567,000. Art Broughton explained that if they don’t do all six holes at the
same time, the startup money is a lot and they can actually get these done within a 2 month timeframe. He
said it wouldn’t disrupt the entire course and golfers could continue to play while the work is being
completed. When they start the lateral lines, there may be a time that a hole would be down for a half a day.
Daly asked one more question regarding the % of funding for our Reserve account. Devereaux explained he
is working on the Reserve Schedule and there are two rules of thumb. There is a % funded basis which
works well for a smaller community. The newer concept for a community like ours is called threshold
funding. It basically says “where is the floor that the BOD is comfortable with having in the bank that would
cover any expenditure that we would have to make.” When you look at your exposure like buildings, you
have insurance to cover this. He thinks we may be looking at 1.5 million or 2 million that the LACC wants
to carry. He thinks we are not too far off this figure and could get there within two years based on our
current funding model. George said that it sounded like we would be back on track within two years of
where we were. Devereaux agreed and said we should actually be above where we are now at that time.
Crager asked who would be doing the work and Art told them it was the original contractor who did all the
other work and put in the original irrigation system. Fawver asked if we would we be able to hold the
Invitationals in August. Art said he hoped to be done by then, but would do what it took to be sure we could
hold the Invitationals. The Board wanted to begin as quickly as possible. A motion was made to accept the
concept of doing the six holes on the golf course not to exceed $567,000 which was seconded by Rudgers
and passed unanimously. Art Broughton thanked everyone on the Board of Directors.
Devereaux asked for board approval to file liens on three pieces of property. A motion was made by Foote to
authorize filing these three liens and suspension of membership privileges and was seconded by Crager.
Discussion followed and motion passed unanimously.
Devereaux asked to pull Item G and discuss next month regarding Financial Statements.
This meeting adjourned at 9:30 a.m. to Executive Session to discuss legal.
The next regular meeting of the Lake Almanor Country Club Board of Directors is scheduled for April 16,
2016 to be held in the Clubhouse at 8:30 a.m.

CAL FIRE GUIDE TO MAINTAINING
DEFENSIBLE SPACE
Our neighborhood bushes and trees, especially large trees, are not of themselves fire hazards but rather they need proper spacing, pruning, removal
or reduction of underlying ladder fuels, removal of dead materials, and spacing from potential fuel sources to minimize their chances of burning.
The guidelines below should allow a better understanding of clearing and pruning distances recommended by Cal Fire. Defensible space is a harsh
reality of forest living, but it is the law. It is a hard concept to swallow since many of us inherited our landscapes when we originally bought. As
neighbors, we typically live within each other’s defensible space; therefore, it becomes important to do our part in meeting the guidelines within
our property and to talk to our neighbors about how to treat the overlap zones. A joint effort to clean up such areas together (in person or
financially) might be the best approach. You might find out your neighbor dislikes that “privacy wall” just as much as you do.
Barbara MacArthur, Firewise Chairperson (v. FireNews16_5 newsltr)
Creating defensible space is essential to improve your home’s chance of surviving a wildfire. It’s
the buffer you create between a building on your property and the grass, trees, shrubs, or any
wildland area that surround it. This space is needed to slow or stop the spread of wildfire and it
protects your home from catching fire—either from direct flame contact or radiant heat.
Defensible space is also important for the protection of the firefighters defending your home.
Defensible Space Zones: Two zones make up the required 100 feet of defensible space.
Plant and Tree Spacing The spacing between grass,
shrubs, and trees is crucial to reduce the spread of
wildfires. The spacing needed is determined by the type
and size of brush and trees, as well as the slope of the
land. For example, a property on a steep slope with larger
vegetation requires greater spacing between trees and
shrubs than a level property that has small, sparse
vegetation.
Vertical Spacing: Remove all tree branches at least 6
feet from the ground. Allow extra vertical space between
shrubs and trees. Lack of vertical space can allow a fire to
move from the ground to the brush to the tree tops like a
ladder.

2016 Band Shell News
By Shirley Leschinsky/Director of Music
SUMMER MUSIC AT LACC
Just think of how many ways that we have been able to listen to music beginning with live
music many years ago…then came radio, vinyl records; then came TV; cassettes, then 8
Tracks, Sonic TV music, iTunes and Satellite. I know there were lots more in between,
but those are the ones I remember best. Most of them are totally gone; except vinyls, they
are on their way back. But, what I remember the most during my lifetime…is live
music…music on the stage…band members, instruments; watching the action, the smiles
as they played and also the seriousness of some of the players, especially the drummers.
When we heard the sounds of instruments and vocals, it was real. There was no sound
equipment to change the tunes, or even change the songs by adding a third member to the
band, while there were only two on the stage in front of us. Some of you may not even
know that happens, but it does. Yes, a single person can be on the stage and the music
may sound like an entire orchestra. Technology has definitely taken over a big role in the
music we hear today.
In the past, the only way I ever hired a band was to see them in person. I have driven
miles, and miles, just to take a personal look and listen prior to hiring before a concert, a
wedding or any other event where music was a focus. I always look first with my eyes;
then shut them and just listen to the sound; then, I look and listen together to decide
whether this band will please the audience for which I am hiring. But now, my choices
are to listen to the internet or a CD prior to hiring a band. What am I hearing; is it real, or
only part real, and just how much technology has been interjected into the songs?
When hiring for our LACC Summer Concert Series, I take this all into consideration. Lots
of research is put into hiring of the bands. I try hard to have real band members on the
stage, playing real music, from real instruments. Our only technology usually comes from
the sound equipment. The bottom line is up to the band members as to how this sound
equipment is adjusted. We have the awesome expertise of our very own Sound Guy, Pat
Voboril, a staff member of the LACC. Pat makes sure the sound equipment is set up
properly. Prior to the actual concert, he does a Sound Check with the band to make sure
all is well. The Band knows what kind of sound they want and Pat provides it, so you, the
audience can listen to the best music possible.
LACC is excited for you to hear the bands of the 2016 Summer Concert Series. Some are
ones you have heard before; some are new; then, there are some that are only in our
thoughts to hire in 2017. Let us know what you like to hear. Remember, one type of
music does not suit all. We are here for variety. You may even learn to like a type of
music or a band that you have never heard prior to the Bandshell Concerts.

ground to a halt.
These address markers help all
responding emergency agencies.
A very strange thing happened on July 4, 1910. Everyone in Prattville was enjoying
holiday festivities a few miles from town. Suddenly there was a huge explosion and the
startled revelers looked toward the town and saw an enormous tower of smoke and
flame. Most of the town was burned to the ground within hours. Whether it was arson
or just a fortuitous accident was never proved but the matter was resolved, and
construction could go forward.
Order your reflective address marker today.
It may save your life or someone you love.
By February 1914, the earth-fill and concrete dam was completed and within four years
the lake was filled to capacity. The lake was now a reservoir measuring nearly 40
square miles, 13 miles long and 6 miles wide capable of holding 220,000 acre feet of
water. In the 1950’s the lake was enlarged to 47 miles with the storage capacity
increased to the present 1.3 million acre feet.

Ed Clifford filed incorporation papers for the Lake Almanor Country Club on July 9,
1953. Clifford was a lawyer and developer whose intention for LACC was to create an

membership committee. This approval plan was subsequently phased out.

The community of 1832 single family homes now includes the golf course and
clubhouse, originally built by member volunteers, 25 miles of road, seven tennis courts,
boat launches and two recreation areas. What would those Indians, explorers and early
settlers think of what has transpired over the years?
After the payment is received, the Peninsula Fire Protection District
will make and install your marker for you.
It seems we missed the boat two years ago when Lake Almanor experienced its
centennial anniversary. It would have been fun to have a celebration. Oh, well, that’s

FIREWISE from Page 7
To determine the proper vertical spacing between shrubs
and the lowest branches of trees, use the formula in
diagram. This will help to preclude the potential for fire
climbing along adjacent laddered fuels.
Example: A five foot shrub is growing near a tree.
3×5 = 15 feet of clearance is needed between the top
of the shrub and the lowest tree branch.
Horizontal Spacing: Horizontal spacing depends on the
slope of the land and the height of the shrubs or trees.
Check the chart to the right to determine spacing
distance.
Fire Safe Landscaping and Plants to Avoid Fire-safe landscaping isn’t necessarily the same
thing as a well-maintained yard. Fire-safe landscaping uses fire-resistant plants that are
strategically planted to resist the spread of fire to your home (refer to short video below).

CLEARANCE
On the other hand, firefighters often refer to highly flammable vegetation as “gasoline plants.”
These plants are easily ignited and can burn very intensely. Make it a priority to minimize,
isolate, and/or remove gasoline plants from your landscape.

FIRE DISTRICT 2016 LOT CLEAN UP
REMINDER
By Chief Gary Pini
With the very mild winter and no snow on the ground, lot inspections for all properties within
the Peninsula Fire District will start April 18th this year. The main objective of the notice is to
make sure the Fire District stays as fire safe as possible. The month of May initiates the need
for property owners to obtain a burning permit before burning. Obtain burning permits from
Station #2, 801 Golf Club Road, between 8:00 AM to 5:00 P.M. Always call Air Quality
Control before burning at 258-2588.
To all property owners who receive a notice and complete the scheduled work, the Fire District
extends a thank you for doing a great job.
All lot clean up notices are from the Peninsula Fire District, not from the Lake Almanor
Country Club. The Fire District is a separate entity from LACC and you should not contact the
club office regarding these notices, NOR DOES LACC ASSUME RESPONSIBILITY.
In order to be of assistance to the property owner, a list of workers who perform lot clean up
can be found below. Homeowners should make sure that the work meets the specification of
the Fire District before the worker is paid in full.

MEN’S 18-HOLE GOLF
ASSOCIATION
By Ev Eaton, President
Welcome to the 2016 Golf Season!
Golf is a large part of the enjoyable time we spend at Lake Almanor. The camaraderie and
contacts we share contribute to the quality of our summer lives. I encourage each of us to
share this pleasure with others. Our personable and knowledgeable Golf Pro, John Moritz,
will be pleased to answer questions regarding joining our association.
The Men’s group officially began on May 4th with the weekly Sweeps Games. These games
are efficiently organized by John Leete. If you haven’t participated in these fun activities, I
encourage you to do so. Our handicap chairman, Lowell Neugebauer, reminds us that we
should have posted our winter scores making us up- to- date for the summer competitions.
I hope you are excited to participate in the Invitational (July 15th, 16th) as well as the Bash
(August 17th) and the Scotch Classic (September 15th). Remember to submit your
application for the Invitational by June 1st to Nate Ryan.
I am looking forward to returning to LACC, and will be available to give assistance to
anyone who is interested in being part of our fine organization.
Happy 2016 Summer Golf to all!

On May 3, the 18-Hole Women’s Golf Club kicked off the 2016 season which will run until
the end of September. Linda Rawson, with the help of Jessie King, has planned some fun
games for us to play on Tuesday mornings. Joan Johnson is running the Ringer tournament
this year. You will want to join right away so you have plenty of time to get in six rounds to
record your best score on each hole. Dana Seandel is once again organizing our Match Play
in June with some new twists. Carol Griswold has been having a merry time planning the
“Christmas in July” Sugar Pine Open Golf Tournament which promises to be a jolly event
on July 12. Jan Vortmann is coordinating our August Club Championship and Barbara
Leonard is planning our “Captain and Crew” awards celebration also taking place in
August. In addition, we have our monthly luncheons, coordinated by Mary Craig and
general membership meetings on the first Tuesday of each month.

As you can see, we have plenty going on all summer long. If you would like to become a
member of the LACC Women’s Golf Club and have a handicap of 38.1 or less, phone or
text Jessie King at 530-259-2896 or email her at pinegate2@frontiernet.net. If you don’t
have a handicap yet, we’ll help you get one. Tip: save your score cards from wherever you

When you join the LACC Women’s Golf Club, you also become a member of the Pacific
Women’s Golf Association. You will receive a GHIN number, and we will keep your

Working with Linda Pohler is a pleasure. Her knowledge of the Lake
Almanor area market, attention to detail, understanding the needs of
the buyer, ability to act quickly in identifying problems, concerns and
procuring appropriate decision making information make her a valuable partner in purchasing a home.
Linda is always available to us when needed. She helps us refine our
expectations and then finds homes that meet our criteria. Everything
she does for us is handled in a professionally and timely manner. We
would highly recommend Linda.
Lonny and MaryAnne Retzloff
I had to write to express our sincere gratitude for the assistance Linda
Pohler provided us in our recent home purchase. Linda’s professionalism and knowledge of area were amazing. She listened to what we
wanted in a new home and lined up a great list of properties to view.
She made the day a fun time for not only my wife and I, but our two
children. She is a skilled negotiator and we feel she made sure we paid
a fair price.
Linda was also extremely diligent throughout the closing process to
ensure everything remained on track. Our beautiful new home closed
on time and at a fair price. Linda has continued to be a wonderful resource even after the closing. She is always available for questions related to the area.
I would highly recommend Linda to any of my friends or family who
are looking to purchase homes in the area.

Two great ways to help your golf swing are lessons and re-gripping your clubs. Jeff and I have

WHAT IS A POKER RUN?
A poker run is an organized event where participants usually ride Motorcycles,
Golf Carts, Boats, and occasionally even horses. They must visit five to seven
checkpoints, drawing a single playing card at each one, and then travel to the next
location, eventually building their complete poker “hand.” The object is to have the
best poker hand at the end of the run. Poker run organizers usually develop a
unique or scenic route to each of the stops and the run normally takes 1 to 2 hours
to complete. Many times the event has a time limit. However, the participants are
normally not timed — winning is purely a matter of chance.
Poker runs usually require a fee to enter; part of the fee goes to funding the event,
including the prizes, while the rest goes to the event’s charity recipient or club
treasury. Prizes, such as money, plaques, or merchandise donated by commercial
sponsors of the event, will be awarded for the best hand. Some runs will award
smaller awards for lower hands or even the lowest hand.
Participants initially register at a specific location where they purchase one or more
blank tally sheets used to record the cards they’ll draw at each stop. The
participants then take their tally sheet(s) to the first card stop where a volunteer has
a container filled with a single deck of loose playing cards. Participants stir the
cards and draw one card for each tally sheet they purchased. The volunteers
observe the card(s) drawn by the participants, annotate the tally sheet(s) with the
appropriate card information, and the participants proceed to the next card stop
with their tally sheet. Each checkpoint might offer food or entertainment, covered
either by the entry fee or at additional cost.
Each participant is responsible for maintaining the integrity of his or her hand
during the run. The only requirement is that riders arrive at the final checkpoint by
the time prizes are awarded, usually near the end of the day, typically at a party
with food and refreshments. It might be required that participants collect all of the
requisite number of cards, five or seven, or they might be allowed to miss
checkpoints and use a hand with fewer cards, though the odds of a winning hand
are much lower. After drawing their seventh card at the final stop, the participants
give their tally sheets to other volunteers who will score the sheets and determine
the winning hands. Prizes are normally given to the top three hands and also to the
worst hand drawn by participants in the poker run.
That’s all there is to it, so sign up, ride and have fun!

LAKE ALMANOR COUNTRY CLUB
GOLF CART POKER RUN
The Poker Run will be Saturday, June 25, 2016. This event does not require
participants to play golf, as there is no golf play scheduled with this fundraiser.
A Poker Run is similar to a car rally, in which Golf Carts are used to drive on a
pre-planned route. Several locations will be marked, where you must stop and
select a Poker Card (or a numbered chip) that will be marked on your Poker Hand
by the person working the stop. After seven stops, the best five cards will be used
to select the best Poker Hand. Prizes are awarded for the three highest Poker Hands
and one prize for the lowest Poker Hand.
The cost of this event is $25.00 per person, which includes one poker hand and
lunch (served at 12:30 p.m.) following the event at Recreation Area 1. We will be
serving hamburgers and hot dogs at the picnic area. You may have more than one
player per golf cart as some people may not have a golf cart but will want to
participate.
Proceeds from this event will benefit the Franke Miller Girls Golf Program which
is conducted each year at our course. Registration forms may be picked up at the
Golf Pro Shop, LACC Administration Office, or found on the LACC Website.
Please complete the registration form and return it ASAP. A location for completed
forms will be set up in the Golf Area of the Club House. Extra lunches will be
available for $8.00 each.
Questions on this event can be directed to Susan Davenport (530) 259-5956 or
susandavenport1219@aol.com.

AUTHORIZATIONS NEEDED
With the increase in spring and summer traffic, the gate attendants are concerned with how to give
access to a guest, family member or worker that appears at the gate for entry, if the gate attendants
do not have the correct authorization on file. The Board of Directors has instructed that there be an
authorization on file, from the member before the guest, family member or worker is allowed
entry. Please know the attendant will diligently try to contact you, before turning away the person
requesting entry. However, there are times when the gates or the office do not have the correct
contact phone number and they can do nothing more than sending the individual away.
To make life a little simpler for all those involved, please let the LACC office or Security Gate
know your current phone number. It can be your home, office or a cell phone number. We often
ask a member for all their phone numbers so, in the case of an emergency, we can quickly get in
touch with you.
Please understand the gate attendants are only doing their usual great job. They want to make sure
that someone does not gain unauthorized entry to your property and they just need some help from
the members. So, please remember that when you send someone to LACC for work or pleasure,
call first: 530-259-5320.
2016 LACC ANNUAL STICKERS HAVE ARRIVED
It’s that time of year again! LACC Security will be replacing all expired
stickers on vehicles. Please keep in mind, in order to replace stickers on
vehicles, the weather must be dry and the temperature at a minimum of 55
degrees.
LACC Boat Launch Permits are also available for purchase. When purchasing
your launch permit, we ask that you show current boat registration.
Please update all lists: including name changes and adding or removing of any
guest or family authorizations.
2016 Phone Books are also available at the Clifford Gate.
LACC Security is looking forward to welcoming you back or to just say “Hi”.
NOTICE
MOVE CAN TAGS
The newest member handbook, approved November 17,
2007, was mailed to all LACC members. Additional
copies are available at the LACC office. It is also
available on the LACC web site. Insert pages, of Board
approved changes to the handbook, are mailed to all
members each year with your annual dues billing.
In order to provide our weekend Members, or their guests/renters, a convenient
alternative to dispose of trash the right way, without violating LACC rules, Move Can
Tags can now be purchased for $5.00 from the LACC office or the Clifford gate. Each
tag will be good for removing one or two 30-gallon cans or one 64-gallon wheeler from
the roadside by LACC staff for the member after Feather River Disposal has picked up
the trash.

LACC PICKLEBALL
ART AT THE CLUBHOUSE
By Linda Rawson
“FRIENDS OF PICKLEBALL”- it’s hard to believe that summer is just around the corner.
We are looking forward to a fun-filled season, and we are all very lucky to have such
wonderful amenities. Our “Opening Pickleball Celebration” will take place in June. Date
and details will be posted on the kiosk and in the June issue of our newsletter.
We hope to continue our regular Tuesday-Thursday play from 3:00-5:00 p.m. As in the
past, the courts are reserved for “Friends of Pickleball” players those two afternoons. The
nets should be up and ready for play Thursday, May 5th-opening day!!!
I have heard that there was a discussion at the last board meeting about perhaps lining the
two lower tennis courts for Pickleball during certain times. I believe the idea will be
presented to the tennis committee soon. Hopefully, we will get a favorable response.
It is time to update our pickleball roster for those that wish to be added. Please email me at
l.rawson@sbcglobal.net. We welcome all new ideas and really would like feedback. See
you on the courts in May.
You are invited to come and see the wonderful artwork displayed in
our Clubhouse from May 1 through July 15. This month’s featured
local artists from The Back Room Art Gallery are:
Karin Urquhart – Oil
Sylvia Smith – Watercolor
Sally Posner – Oil and Watercolor
Mary Jane Bagshaw – Oil and Pastel
Jacquie Cordova – Oil
Kari Mais – Mixed Media
Jan Parks – Oil
Barbara MacArthur – Acrylic
Betty Bishop – Photography
Kate Rondon – Photography
Barbara Jackson – Photography
There will be an art reception for the artists and our members on
Sunday, July 12, from 2-5 p.m. at the Clubhouse dining room. It will
be a nice opportunity to meet the featured artists. To see even more
of their artwork, stop by Books & Beyond in Old Town, Chester.

AMPLIFIED MUSIC ON THE LAKE
The sound of amplified music played from boats travels in an extraordinary
way across the water. The sound from one boat broadcasting music can travel
for several miles up and down the shore and across the Lake, thus upsetting
the peace and quiet for hundreds of people.
Boaters are requested to refrain from playing amplified music that
can be heard beyond the immediate area of the boat.
The Lake Almanor Community thanks you for your cooperation in
maintaining the quality of life at the Lake.
2016 LACC VEHICLE & BOAT STICKERS
The 2016 vehicle and boat stickers are now being applied at the Clifford Drive
gate.
When you arrive at the gate, be prepared to let the staff know if you have sold
any vehicles so that they can delete them from your member data. With the
busy summer season approaching, Security staff would like to know if there are
any changes or updates to your family member list and “anytime” guest
authorizations. Please call 530-259-5320 or email lakesecurity@frontiernet.net
or drop off the list at Clifford gate. Be thorough with your names, since stickers
will only be given to the names on your list.
All LACC members planning to launch or recover watercrafts, private docks or
use the docks in Rec 1 or Rec 2, will need to bring their current watercraft
registration to the gate to buy their boat sticker. Gate attendants will need to see
your registration for each watercraft, with a CF number, to issue stickers. The
cost is $15 per year, per CF number, for the member. If you are a co-owner
of a property, your fees are $20 per week or $200 annually per watercraft. If
you are a family member, your fees are $25 per week or $250 annually per
watercraft. Please remember to keep your registration in your watercraft.
Thank you for helping us. We are looking forward to a smooth summer season.
