The City of Madrid is fully committed to business tourism
The City of Madrid is fully committed to business tourism Madrid is an ideal destination for Business Tourism. Each year, the Spanish capital welcomes over one million business tourists, representing one eighth of the overall figure of tourists visiting the city, which surpassed eight million in 2012. One of the capital's greatest advantages is its communications system. Madrid is the indisputable international hub between Europe and South America, and has an enormous potential to become the main gateway to North America thanks to its main airport, which has direct flights to 200 cities worldwide. MadridBarajas is ranked fourth among European airports in terms of volume, with over 45 million passengers in 2012, and seeks to become third following the enlargement of terminal 4, thanks to which it may reach 70 million passengers per year. In addition, Madrid has an extensive subway network, city and intercity bus service, and an excellent railroad system interconnecting the main cities in Spain quickly and directly via the high-speed AVE. Its strategic situation in the center of Spain and its vast cultural and leisure offering easily turns business tourism into leisure tourism. Distances from Madrid in hours Barcelona 2.30 Cordoba 1.50 Malaga 2.25 Toledo 0.30 Seville 2.20 Valencia 1.35 Valladolid 1.00 Zaragoza 1.15 Madrid is also prominent for its range of hotels, particularly for the excellent qualityprice ratio of its 3, 4 and 5-star hotels. The city of Madrid has 234 hotels in these categories for a total of almost eighty thousand hotel beds. When considering all establishments in the region of Madrid, this figure increases to 1,191 establishments with 104,195 hotel beds. The price for a one night's stay in a hotel in the city of Madrid continues to be highly competitive, with a quality-price ratio hardly comparable to any other city worldwide. According to data from a hotel survey by Hotels.com, Madrid maintained an average rate of €108 (£95) in 2012, which is in line with Vienna or Berlin but cheaper than direct competitors such as Rome, London or Paris. 3* Hotel 4* 5* Hotel Hotel EUROPE Berlin 56 74 116 Istanbul 67 88 147 Madrid 69 78 138 Vienna 79 86 144 Barcelona 67 101 175 Stockholm 95 136 186 Amsterdam 88 110 159 Copenhagen 99 115 163 Moscow 95 160 204 Rome 83 105 227 London 89 128 232 Paris 102 151 290 REST OF WORLD Mumbai 72 99 136 Sydney 91 124 191 Shanghai 52 77 143 Cape Town 65 98 199 Rio de Janeiro 145 205 340 Los Angeles 110 186 280 Tokyo 87 160 317 New York 161 203 332 Hotel Price Index by Hotels.com. The renowned Madrid nightlife, with styles suited to all tastes, leaves no one disenchanted. With its variety of shops, from traditional downtown markets to the exclusive Golden Mile home to international fashion's top brands, options in Madrid are endless. In addition to all this, the city also boasts an enviable climate with almost 3,000 hours of sun annually, low crime level, a high quality of life and a multicultural environment that make it the perfect place to mix business and pleasure. Through Madrid Convention Bureau, part of Madrid Visitors & Convention Bureau and under the direction of the Arts, Sport and Tourism Department, the Madrid Council will intensify its promotional efforts in 2013 to continue being a benchmark in this segment of tourism, in accordance with the 2012-2015 Strategic Plan presented by the Mayor of Madrid, Ana Botella, on April 23, 2012. This plan envisages farther promotional activities in “mature” markets in addition to engaging in activities in China, the Middle East and Russia. Madrid Visitors & Convention Bureau, with almost 200 partners from private companies and public bodies providing professional services for business tourism, leads this market's promotion through destination activities, events organized in Madrid, a comprehensive media and promotional plan, and the management of candidacies for conferences and company events. Ever since its inauguration, the Municipal Conference Centre has consolidated its position as a benchmark venue for small and medium-sized companies, and as a site for events of significant political, institutional or social repercussion. The Heads of State and Government of the European Union agreed to coin the Euro as the single currency at the Madrid Summit held at the building in Campo de las Naciones. This venue has hosted summits for NATO, the UN, the European Union, Latin America and the Caribbean; the meeting in Spain of the International Monetary Fund and dozens of political, economic and social events. The venue has an auditorium with seating capacity for 1,800 people, a multi-purpose hall spanning 2,200 m2, meeting rooms of various sizes, exhibition areas, a parking lot and a VIP area, thus enabling the site to host a broad range of events and projects.
