Dear Collectors, Welcome to one of the most exciting issues of the Australian Stamp Bulletin. We looked at the upcoming Olympic Games in Australia as an opportunity to apply the Olympic ideals of – ‘faster, higher, stronger’ – to Australia’s Olympic stamp programme. Our goal was to reach new heights in philatelic excellence and national symbolism. I think you will agree that we have succeeded when you read about the instant Gold Medallists stamps. Yes, a stamp will be issued each time an Australian individual or team wins a gold medal! The stamps will be on sale at 67 post offices around the country from 12 noon the day after the medal is won. The stamps will be available in the vast majority of Australian outlets within three days of the medal being won. (Subject to normal opening hours.) The Gold Medallists stamp issue is a world philatelic first. It puts Australia at the forefront of stamp design as well as printing technology and innovation. You can read more about the design, development and innovation being used to deliver each new stamp in this issue. We are taking advantage of digital technology to produce both the digital (immediate supply in selected locations) and the offset versions of the stamps (ongoing supply throughout the country). The stamps’ significance extends beyond philately and printing. Each Gold Medallists stamp will capture the immediacy and enthusiasm of the competition and help spread the gold medal winners’ pride and excitement throughout Australia. We expect world wide interest in this stamp issue. Collectors who want to ensure their collections include a complete set of Gold Medallists stamps will be interested in our special offer. Read more about this historic and innovative stamp issue on page 8. Registering for the Gold Medallists special offer is the easiest and most cost effective way to collect Gold Medallists stamps and secure your own piece of Australian sporting history. Until next time, Australia Post is not a sponsor of the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games. Nothing in this publication should be read to imply or infer a sponsorship relationship. Cover: Olympic Sports (FHA Image Design) Find out more about stamps at our Web site: www.auspost.com.au/stamps David Maiden, Manager, Philatelic Group Olympic Sports 17 august 2000 Sheetlet at 80 % actual size This special stamp issue celebrates the Games of the XXVII Olympiad. The sheetlet of ten stamps captures the variety and vitality of the games themselves. The ten stamps in the issue depict male and female athletes engaged in individual and team sports. The range of sports covers those that are popular in Australia, sports introduced at the 2000 Olympic Games and sports in which Australians traditionally excel. The design by FHA Image Design, Melbourne, incorporates the Olympic Rings and uses fluid imagery to represent the athletes and communicate the emotion, energy and grace of Olympic competition. The bold multi-coloured background calls to mind the atmosphere of exuberant celebration the Olympics create throughout the world. The illustrations extend beyond the body of the stamp into the selvedge. The logo commemorating the Centenary of Women in the Olympic Games is also printed in the selvedge. Associated products include a self-adhesive book of ten stamps, a set of first day covers, two stamp and coin covers (Aquatics and Athletics), a sheetlet pack, an international pre-paid envelope, an aerogramme, and a set of ten maximum cards. A blank first day cover is also available. Depicted on the stamps, clockwise from top left are: water polo, hockey, swimming, basketball, triathlon, rowing, athletics, gymnastics, tennis and equestrian. This will be the first Olympic Games for women’s water polo and the men’s and women’s triathlon. In 1998 Australia Post’s Philatelic group set itself a significant goal , to celebrate each gold medal won by an Australian individual or team during the Sydney 2000 Olympic Games with a stamp available for sale from 12 noon the day after the medal is won. Developing the Gold Medallists stamps presented many challenges. The design had to be flexible enough to suit individuals as well as teams, the Australian Olympic Team logo, both male and female winners, differing backgrounds and event names, and incorporate an image taken during the event or in victory. A square stamp, produced in sheetlets of ten, provides the required flexibility and style. Next we had to develop the complex, integrated production and delivery processes that would enable us to meet our goal of next day availability. When a gold medal is won, Allsport (the official Olympic photographer) will send electronic images to Australia Post’s Sydney design studio. Our design team will select an image, create the stamp and sheetlet design, then transmit the electronic file to print sites in six capital cities, for digital printing. The file will also be sent for offset printing and to Australia Post’s Designers. An imprint (lower right-hand corner) will identify the source of each sheetlet. All sheetlets will be printed on pre-perforated paper stock. The instant nature of these stamps relies on recent advances in technology. Once printed, sheetlets from the six digital printers will be sent to 67 outlets (page 10) where – subject to normal hours of operation and while stocks last – Gold Medallists stamps will be available from 12 noon the day after a gold medal is won. Distinctive imprints for each print site will identify the source of each sheetlet. Except for Tasmania and the Northern Territory (which will receive stock from Victoria and South Australia respectively) each digital print location will distribute stock within its own state/territory. Digital imprints NSW ACT QLD WA SA VIC Offset imprint Offset stamps This is traditional stamp printing with a high-tech twist. Using the latest printing technology will enable the printer to skip one step in the traditional printing process. Instead of making film from the electronic file, then using the film to make the printing plate, the printer will produce the plate directly from the electronic file. It is the combination of state of the art technology, pre-designed templates and preperforated paper that will enable us to deliver offset stock to post offices throughout Australia from 12 noon three days after the medal is won. Offset stock will replace initial digital stock as the digital stock is sold. All offset printing will be done in Victoria, so a single imprint will identify offset stock. Born the Honourable Elizabeth Angela Marguerite Bowes-Lyon, the Queen Mother is one of the most popular and admired members of the British royal family. She is the widow of King George VI and mother of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II and Princess Margaret. To mark her 100th birthday Australia Post will issue a special souvenir cover. The cover will feature Australia Post’s 1999 Queen’s Birthday stamp which also celebrated the life of the Queen Mother. The stamp features images of both the Queen and the Queen Mother and was the first time mother and daughter had appeared together on an Australian stamp. MOTHER The cover itself shows Her Majesty on her 96th birthday; at six years of age; and in 1937 as Queen, beside King George VI at the time of his coronation, and with her daughters. The postmark (Strathmore VIC) was selected because the Queen Mother’s father was the 14 Earl of Strathmore. A thistle is used in the design because the Queen Mother also became the First Lady of the Thistle. We have received special tour funding for Kangaroo and Map: ‘an advertisement for Australia’. The exhibition told the story behind the first Australian stamp and the controversy the stamp generated when it was issued in 1913. The Commonwealth government's Visions of Australia program has funded a tour of the exhibition which will take it to fourteen venues around Australia. The tour will start in early 2001 and will take the exhibition to every state and territory, to capital cities and regional locations. We will include the tour schedule as it becomes available. New catalogue In 1999 philatelist Richard Breckon curated an exhibition called ‘The rare and the beautiful’ in Australia Post’s Post Master Gallery. The exhibit’s 56-page full colour catalogue featuring many philatelic gems from Australia Post’s collection is now available by mail order. 1017260 The rare and the beautiful: exhibition catalogue ............................$25.00 The Rare and the Beautiful Christmas Island Christmas This year the Christmas Island Christmas stamps transport the nativity story to Christmas Island. Tropical flora and fauna stand in for the traditional players in the traditional Christmas carol, We Three Kings. Melbourne illustrator, Bill Wood gives us a delightful, whimsical interpretation of the nativity in this commemorative issue of three stamps. Each of the stamps illustrates lyrics from the song. From left to right, the first 40c stamp depicts the three kings passing their gifts of gold, frankincense and myrrh to Christmas Island birds. The birds will follow the star that guided the kings and transport the precious offerings to Christmas Island. The second 40c stamp shows the birds near the end of their journey as they approach the islands. The 45c stamp shows local red crabs ready to take the gifts and deliver them to the baby Jesus. Christmas Island Christmas stamps are issued in September for people who want to post Christmas items early. Bill Wood is a talented Melbourne-based illustrator. His artwork was also used for the 1995 Christmas Island Christmas stamp issue. 5 september 2000 First day cover Technical details Issue date ..........................5 September 2000 Denominations....................Two x 40c, one x 45c Designer ............................Bill Wood, Melbourne Printe ................................SNP Ausprint Paper ................................Tullis Russell, red phosphor Printing process ..................Lithography Stamp size..........................30 x 30.55 mm Perforations ........................14.4 x 14.0 Sheet layout........................Modules of 50, no gutter National postmark ..............Christmas Island Australia 6798 Mail order codes 1147067 Stamps, (two x 40c, one x 45c) ..............$1.25 1147001 First day cover ...................................... $1.50 Stamp Collecting Stamp Collecting Starter Kit This is your opportunity to purchase a Stamp Collecting Starter Kit at a special reduced price of $9.95.
