crash tests - the facts...
FMVSS stands for Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard
and is a set of American tests for car safety. This
standard is the only universally agreed standard that is
used by all car manufacturers.
FMVSS 208 - This test relates to passenger safety and
tests for likely injuries to passengers with and without
seatbelts and airbags.It is not a requirement of the test
for the windscreen to remain in place and so has no
relevance to a windscreen adhesive.
FMVSS 216 - This measures the ability of a vehicle to
withstand a rollover, it is tested by dropping a heavy
weight onto the roof.
In order to pass,the A pillar should not be crushed by
more than a specified amount.The windscreen is not
mentioned in this test and most cars will pass it without
a windscreen in place!
FMVSS 212 - Currently the only test that measures the
retention of a windscreen in a simulated crash is 212,as
such this is the only test with any real meaning with
regard to windscreen adhesives.This is why we use this
test to guarantee the performance of the KENT
Screenfix range of SMP adhesives.
FEDERAL MOTOR VEHICLE SAFETY STANDARDS
Standard No. 212;Windshield mounting.
“This standard establishes windshield retention requirements for motor vehicles during crashes.
The purpose of this standard is to reduce crash injuries and fatalities by providing for retention
of the vehicle windshield during a crash......and preventing the ejection of occupants from the
vehicle.
This standard applies to passenger cars, and to multipurpose passenger vehicles , trucks, and
buses having a gross vehicle weight rating of 4536 kilograms or less.
When the vehicle travelling longitudinally forward at any speed up to and including 48
kilometers per hour impacts a fixed collision barrier that is perpendicular to the line of travel
of the vehicle......the windshield mounting of the vehicle shall retain not less than the minimum
portion of the windshield periphery.
Vehicles equipped with passive restraint systems shall retain not less than 50 percent of the
portion of the windshield periphery on each side of the vehicle longitudinal centerline.
Vehicles not equipped with passive restraint systems shall retain not less than 75 percent of
the windshield peripher y.”

moulding is removed it is impossible to press it back into place. The U groove tool will cut a groove

Many technicians routinely grind standard cold knife blades
thinner so they will cut easier. Often this grinding action
will overheat the blade and reduce the hardening of the
cutting edge leading to premature wear and blunting.
Coined Z blades are thinned before they are hardened so
there is no need to grind them thinner. This grinding action
is carefully controlled to leave a sharp cutting edge only 88
thousandths of a mm thick.

Ultrawiz Blades
Tight Wire
The Ultrawiz cold knife blades were introduced in 1987
and have become one of the most used blades in the
world. They are now available in the original thickness and
in a thinner version. The Ultra thin blades are an average
of 40% thinner than the original blades. These blades are
made with the dual-angle sharpening method. Why is this
important? Most fitters feel the thinner the blade, the
better it cuts. But it also means the thinner the blade, the
easier it breaks. The original Ultrawiz blades are thicker
and do not break easy, but are harder to pull through the
adhesive. The Ultrathin blades are thinner and easier to
pull through the adhesive, but break easier.

One of the biggest mistakes a windscreen fitter can make
is trying to use the longest cold knife possible and make a
single cut. It would be better to use a short blade to make
the first cut, a longer blade to make a second cut and, if
necessary, a third blade to make the last cut. So each
windscreen fitter should have three cold knifes (E0102)
ready or the push button cold knife (E0101) to change the
blades quickly.

mirrors.

windscreen replacement:the long
and the short method. We would
recommend using the shor t
method for optimum results.
This involves cutting back the old
adhesives with Equalizer Super
Scraper (E0103) back to a height of
2mm around the screen
aperture/frame.

2 Cut out old screen preferably using
Equalizer Excalibur (E0136) or
Freedom (E0189) with serrated
blade (follow instructions supplied
with tool). Alternatively Square
Wire HF (E0209) or Cold Cut Out
Knife (E0146, or E0101 or E0102)
can be used depending on
application. Care should be taken to
protect interior trim and dashboard
using dash protector (E0122).
3 Make sure the screen is completely
cut out before attempting to
remove the screen with glass lifters
(E0111).

5 Take the new screen out of its
packaging and inspect it for any
defects.Make sure that the screen
will fit by placing it over the screen
aperture/frame using glass lifters
(E0111). Replace screen on
windscreen stand (E0133).
6 Clean the ceramic coating around
the screen using KENT Screenprep
wipe (34992).

7 Thoroughly clean the screen
aperture/frame bond area, including
the old adhesive, with KENT
Screenprep wipe (34992).
8 Depending on the application and
preference, apply Screenfix+ (SFX+)
on the screen aperture/frame or
directly to the glass ceramic coating
using a KENT air caulking gun
(34894 for SFX+ Cartridges,83400
for SFX+ sausages) or KENT hand
caulking gun (34775) with a
sufficient depth of bead.
9 Carefully position screen and press
into correct position,using
Waterproof tape (34720) if
necessary.

10 Replace trim,interior mirrors and
windscreen wipers.
Remove any excess adhesive using
a wipe or cloth using a small
amount of KENT Acrysol (500ml
aerosol 83930,or 1L bottle 83925).

sticker to the inside lower left
corner of the screen to allow easy
identification of the adhesive
should any future work be

Door Panel Clip Removal Tools
Cowling Clip Removal Tool
Door Panel Clips are anywhere on a car, some near an
edge, some far back under the edge, some are in
locations that are impossible to reach. Some cars have a
door skin made of metal so thin that a rounded clip
removal tool will bend the metal.
An innovative tool to remove expansion
fasteners quickly and without any damage.
The expansion screw that goes down into
the centre is not really a screw, but a push
in clip that is made to look like a Philips
head screw. On many new vehicles the
expansion fasteners are down in a recess
and cannot be easily accessed with existing tools.
This Equalizer set will offer a tool for every possible
panel clip to be removed. The large curved tool is for
removing on the front part of the door panel because
some door jams are so close a regular clip removal tool
will not work. A V-groove tool that will remove the small
clips on the cowling. The other door panel removal tools
have different size openings that will grab and hold the
clip and are available in different lengths so you can put
them far behind the door panel to reach deep recessed
clips.
The tools are made of the highest quality, heat treated
stainless steel and are fully polished.
The Equalizer expansion clip removal tool has a small screw that screws into the plastic head
and grabs onto the inside of the Philips head screw. Use the gnarled knob to screw the centre part
of the tool into the Philips head screw, then take the impact slide to the bottom,bring it up quickly to
impact the gnarled top of the tool and the screw is instantly pulled out of the clip. The clip will then
collapse and can be easily removed.

A plastic corkscrew which can be screwed into the cured urethane inside the nozzle. You
pull the plug of cured urethane out of the nozzle and use the remainder of the urethane in
the cartridge. The corkscrew part of the urethane plug puller is encased in a plastic cover.
To use the urethane plug puller, remove the handle and put it through the end of the
corkscrew. This will give you leverage to screw the puller into the urethane and pulling
power to remove the cured urethane.

Windscreen Stand
Normal files do not work well to sharpen most blades
used by a windscreen fitter. Most blades are as hard as the
file used to sharpen them, which will not give a sharp
enough finish.
A heavy-duty stand made out of 25mm diameter tubing
designed to last a lifetime. The foam around the tubing is medium
density foam that grabs and holds the glass so it can not move. The
stand is 70cm wide and can be adjusted higher or lower to fit the
glass. The height adjustment is done by hooking the I-bolt hook in the
end of the chain for the lowest setting and then moving up the links to
make the windscreen stand higher. Assembles with just 6 bolts.
This file is harder than cubic boron nitrate which is three
times as hard as a normal file, it will sharpen for years. It is
made of mono-crystalline diamonds which have a strong
crystal structure that does not break apart with use. It has
a sea of diamonds bonded in nickel and then bonded to steel.
Recessed dots provide chip clearance to prevent loading and
help speed sharpening. The file is conveniently colour coded
with blue for coarse (about as coarse as a normal file) and
red for fine. Complete with handle that folds up around the
sharpening part to keep it clean.
