I am inspired everyday by my daughter and the many people who complement my life on many
levels. The following quotation by Goethe was an inspiration, as well as a call to action when Inspire
was conceived 18 months ago. “Whatever you can do or dream you can do, begin it with boldness.
Boldness has genius, power and magic in it.” If you are beginning something in this new year and
new decade, then begin it now. Cling to that vision, take a chance and make it happen.
Hello 2010. A new year and a new decade...
Welcome to the first edition of Inspire Barbados, the magazine devoted to life and style in Barbados. Inspire Barbados will
do just that, inspire you with the latest trends in fashion, jewellery, beauty, health, music, sport, interior design and inspiring
people who make contributions to Barbados. Here, you’ll be able to discover what’s stylish now and where you can get it.
The idea for Inspire Barbados came from living here for several years and realising that even though we’re a geographically
small island, we have so much to offer with the influx of some of the trendiest celebrities, combined with the Barbadian unique
sense of style and attitude. We have scoured Barbados looking at some of the best items available here and now, and looked
at some the trends most suitable for our climate. Excitingly, our shopping horizon is set to expand wonderfully with the highly
anticipated opening of The Limegrove Lifestyle Centre at the end of this year.
This insiders’ guide includes health treatments, hairdressers, make-up artists; some you will know, others you may not. Our
feature, “Off The Beaten Track” highlights some of those little known hideaways, and hangouts you may wish to explore.
We’ll be highlighting exactly what Barbados has to offer from the best health and spa treatments. Barbados is lucky enough
to be home to some of the best healthcare practioners in the world. We have a variety of clinicians, including a world-class
fertility treatment centre. In addition, there are numerous fabulous spas to choose from. What better place to rejuvenate your
body, your mind and soul than in the warmth of Barbados.
In this first issue we have focused on some of the outstanding musical talent here on the island that is being exported around
the world, including our cover girl, Livvi Franc, who is releasing her new single, Automatik this month.
If you’re not fortunate enough to reside on this beautiful island full time, then you can catch up with Inspire Barbados at
www.inspirebarbados.com to read the latest news and features.
So, what are you waiting for? Turn the page and be inspired...

Rihanna Rocks
Six key looks for 2010
1. ROCK CHICK, “I’M WITH THE BAND LOOK”
Appearing at the Jean-Paul Gaultier show, Rihanna wore the designer’s
revealing black bondage style coat over skin-tight leather pants and
electric blue shoes. Many designers are focusing on black and continue
to work with leather. They are accessorising with studded biker platform
shoes and embellished chain bags.
2. CUT ME OUT
Cut outs were EVERYWHERE, creating a mosaic of fabric shapes against
sharp contrasts of skin cut outs.
3. MOULD YOUR SHOULDER
Big coat hanger shoulders on everything from jackets to dresses have reemerged highlighting cinched waists and an hourglass figure. A Balmain
favourite.
NO ONE HAS PULLED OFF A GREATER STYLE
TRANSFORMATION THAN OUR VERY OWN
RIHANNA. Long gone are the wavy extensions and baggy jeans,
4. NOT NAKED, NUDE
replaced by a succession of newsworthy outfits and cutting edge hair.
A number of Paris shows pushed nudity: sheer translucent fabrics designed
to expose. From nipples to belly buttons, the chiffons were intertwined with
solid materials. Rihanna carried off an audaciously revealing Gareth Pugh
dress with horizontal stripes of sheer and solids accompanied by heavy
black designer shades.
In a few whirlwind days at Paris Fashion Week, Rihanna captivated the
5. SPARKLY SEQUINS
world’s headlines with a series of eye-popping outfits at top shows
such as Chanel, Hussein Chalayan and Jean-Paul Gaultier.
What better way to gauge the style direction for 2010 than to
scrutinize Rihanna’s outfits in Paris and keep an eye on her latest
album, Rated R. Voted one of the 50 Most Glamourous Women of
the World by Glamour Magazine, the style icon said “fashion for me is
another way I get to express myself creatively…I am an artist, so I like
creating things.” Long may she rock the fashion world!

Sequins are in abundance. Now acceptable for day and night. Sparkling
crystals look best when they are placed in a symmetrical style, as strewn
over much of the Prada collection. Rihanna sported a crystal embellished
black muff to keep her hands warm, paired with black pumps and Ray
Bans.
6. COUNTRY ROAD
At Chanel’s ready-to-wear show in Paris, Karl Lagerfeld turned his attention
to country chic: subdued earth tones, tweeds and silks contrasts. Rihanna
followed the country theme - with the exception of her Louboutins wearing a high waisted Chanel tweed skirt and a white bustier loaded with
layers of custom-made Chanel jewellery.

a girl’s best friend!
Buying tips for HIM...
You’ve found the right girl to ask, the perfect place to ask her, the words to
say, and the time to say them. But do you have the ring?
Seems you’d better. Proposing without a rock is the biggest proposal
blunder a guy can make. Which means you’ve got to divvy up the dough.
The guideline for this major purchase is 10% of your salary. Sorry guys but
it’s true. Make sure you know the basics diamonds are rated on a 4 C scale.
CUT
Not the shape, but how well it’s shaped.
COLOUR
The amount of brown or yellow in a “colourless stone”. The whiter it is, the
better the diamond.
CLARITY
Clarity describes the clearness or purity of a diamond. This is determined
by the number, size, nature, and location of the internal (inclusions) and
external (blemishes) imperfections.
CARAT
A diamond’s size is measured in carat weight. Big rock equals many carats.
Each diamond carat is also equal to 100-points; a diamond that is a 1/2
carat can also be referred to as a 50-point
diamond. But keep in mind bigger isn’t
necessarily better.
BONUS C - CONFIDENCE!
Buy from a reputable source that provides a
certificate of authenticity. This ensures you are not
buying a blood diamond.

INTERVIEW BY
LUCY ECCLES
How would you describe your style?
Classic...jeans, t-shirt & leather jacket; for evening I like a more
urban look..
Which movie stars’ films will you always see?
Russell Crowe and Kenneth Branagh. It’s hard to choose a favourite
film...too many to identify but Henry V and Gladiator come to mind!
Where is home?
Home is in the UK but I spend an increasing amount of time at my
house in the South of France, just outside St Tropez.
Where have you been on vacation recently?
I have just come back from South East Asia...travelling in Thailand,
Vietnam and Cambodia. A really eye-opening trip.
What’s in your travel bag?
My Mac laptop with Slingbox for watching Birmingham FC when I am
away.
What is on your bedside table?
A great book. Paper and pen so I can scribble down lyrics.
What is on your iPod?
4,000 songs. Classic rock n’ roll - Jerry Lee Lewis & Little Richard
through to modern rock bands like Snow Patrol and Yeha-Noha
(native American Indian music).
What is your signature scent?

etc. My favourite application at the moment is one that let’s you
navigate the night sky and identifies the star constellations. Really
fascinating; it is great for the evening skies in Barbados. I also love
my SkyCaddie. I love playing golf and the latest SkyCaddie model is
the best GPS I have come across.
Where do you like to hang out in Barbados?
Lonestar. I have known it from the days when it was just a garage.
I think the waterside setting is the best on the island. It just captures
the vibe of Barbados...For that special night out, I would always go to
The Cliff, the food & service are world-class.
What are your involvements in charity on the island at
the moment?
I am involved with The Sandy Lane Charitable Trust.
What is your philosopy on life?
Whatever I set my mind to, I will always follow it through... stay
positive and focused....

True story |
THE BOY WHO
A mother’s story by Kelly Moll
WALKED
I heard shouts and screams coming from the beach outside our house. I ran
outside to be greeted by the sight of my neighbour Robyn Edgehill and my
husband holding our 7-year-old son Evan. Blood everywhere. Half of his left
leg is missing. Why is it missing? While out snorkeling with his friend Danny, the
tail prop of a passing fishing boat had severed Evan’s left leg off at the knee.
On the way to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, I prayed someone would be able
to help my little boy. Despite having lost a tremendous amount of blood Evan
is alert…and even more amazingly, calm.
After 16 hours of reattachment surgery, Evan’s amazing doctors managed to
regraft all his arteries by using part of a vein from the right leg. Once stable,
Evan was airlifted to The Hospital for Sick Children (SickKids) in Canada; one
of the world’s largest and most respected pediatric academic health sciences
centres. After 2 surgeries in Canada, Evan’s leg was fitted with an external
fixator used to keep fractured bones stabilized and in alignment.
Months later, as his leg began to heal, Evan was casted with an AFO (ankle/foot
orthodox) that supported his ankle and leg. Wearing this, Evan continued to
surf, skateboard and run, despite having lost the anterior muscle compartment
of his leg that would allow him to move his ankle upwards.
November 2008. Evan underwent yet another surgery at SickKids, where he
regained some use of his ankle after a tendon transfer. This last surgery was

THE BENEFITS OF REGULAR READING TO CHILDREN
1. Promotes family bonding and routine in the home.
2. Develops vocabulary and pronunciation skills.
3. Facilitates ‘teaching moments’; children’s fears can be overcome, sympathy
developed, experiences broadened, and they can be taught appropriate
behaviour through new situations they encounter while reading stories.
4. Carefully chosen books may foster communication about topics otherwise
difficult to broach, e.g. divorce, racism, sexuality, etc.
5. Expands children’s horizons; learning about other people, places and times.
6. Reading aloud can increase cognitive ability and IQ scores.

5 TIPS TO HELP YOUR
CHILD AVOID COLDS & FLU
1. Get children to wash their hands frequently.
2. Blow their noses into clean tissues, put in the garbage and
wash hands.
3. Urge children to cover mouths when coughing and sneezing.
4. Discourage children from touching their mouth, eyes and
nose. This is the biggest entry of viruses into the body.
5. Discourage thumb and finger sucking.
When flu or allergies afflict you, remember you can use effective
symptomatic medicines available over the counter, a few are shown

In the past, beauty and spa treatments
were the realm of women only. Today,
men are more interested in their looks
and fighting the affects of aging.
Over the past decade and a half, gym
memberships and grooming products
have become the norm for men
wanting to look younger, live longer,
and feel better. Now trend setting
alpha males like David Beckham,
openly acknowledge they take it
further, indulging in beauty treatments
previously reserved for their wives
and girlfriends. Read on for Jason’s
account of his day of pampered
indulgence.
Treatment 1
First, up, I experienced the impressively named galvanic facial.
Negatively charged ionised water-soluble products are introduced
into the deep layers of your skin via a galvanic current. Negative
ions, positive ions, futuristic instruments - it sounds and looks
like something from “STAR TREK” or “FRINGE”. However, it was
relaxing and worked wonders instantly. My face felt and looked
reenergised; my skin was smooth, firm and healthy looking.
Treatment 2
The verdict is out on whether it is “manly” to have a pedicure/
manicure. That being said, don’t underestimate the effects of
having clean, groomed nails on your level of attractiveness. I
totally enjoyed the experience of having both simultaneously by
two different beauticians. Hmm...wonder why?
Treatment 3
Finally, I had an unforgettable hot-stone massage. The technique
involves placing water-heated smooth stones of various sizes
on key points of the body and face. Apparently, the benefits
include stress alleviation, toxin release, circulation improvement,
pain relief, and the promotion of harmony and balance within
the body. For me, the primary benefit was that this treatment felt
fantastic and so did I afterwards. Not to be missed!

Hair
Colour
Care
By Lisa Cabral
Have you left the salon with vibrant, fabulous colour only
to see it fade away? Or, even worse go ‘brassy’ in weeks?
We live in a wonderful climate, but unfortunately the worse
enemy of colour-treated hair is the sun.
Over the years I have seen an improvement in colour treated hair products and
have found there are many ways you can extend the life of your colour. My best
results involve applying a clear glaze to the hair after colouring. This works like a
protective seal on the hair, coating it, evening out the porosity and adding extra
shine and condition. I also recommend giving your colour a chance to settle in
and waiting 48 hrs after a colour treatment before shampooing.
However, the most important advice that I can give is to use the correct products.
Harsh shampoos strip colour, so be sure to use a professional shampoo,
conditioner and leave-in treatment specially formulated for colour-treated hair.
They are more gentle and moisturising and contain sunscreens to protect hair.
I recommend Biolage Colorcarethérapie Shampoo and Conditioner followed by
Biolage Hydrathérapie Daily Leave-In Tonic.
Salt water and chlorine also wreak havoc. Chlorine turns blonde hair green and
fades reds and brunettes, so avoid if possible. Rinse out salt water or chlorine
immediately after swimming. If you must swim saturate hair with un-chlorinated
water first, this will ensure your hair soaks up less chlorine.
Last but not least - the most obvious! Cover up with a fabulous hat or scarf
when at the beach. This will offer complete protection and your skin will thank
you as well.
6 tips to keep
your hair
looking great
By Car-Ron Grazette
Qualified Trichologist Car-Ron gives her top tips on keeping your hair in great condition.
1. Wear hair to compliment your lifestyle and features.
2. Understand the limitations of your hair.
3. Build a relationship with your hair care professional. Find a stylist who listens. 80% of
their job is understanding who the client is and what they need.
4. Invest in the best quality products available and suited to your hair type.
5. Maintain a healthy hair care programme.

Pure Source introduced their
range
of
organic
products
to the island in 2005. Their
expertise and success here
demonstrates that the market
is now becoming aware and
informed of the real benefits
of natural products.
fIND ouT wHY NATuRAl bEAuTY pRoDucTS woRK bEST.
Natural skin care has come a long, long way! A
handful of entrepreneurial, independent skin care
companies have led a groundbreaking revolt
against the mass manufactured commercial skin
care industry and are achieving scientific results
with natural, healthier skin friendly ingredients
obtained from the highest quality, sustainable
sources.
Research shows that 60% of what contacts the
skin will be absorbed and enter the bloodstream.
In the past, the absorption of synthetics and
chemicals from most commercial beauty products
were deemed harmless in isolation; however, new
research indicates that in accumulation, i.e. when
applied with the countless other personal care
products used on a daily basis, skin can become
toxic and affect our overall health. The list of
additives is endless and frankly rather frightening:
parabens (a chemical that mimics the hormone
estrogen), mineral oils, petrochemicals, sulphates,
silicons and PEGS.
Aluminium chloride/aluminium chlorohydrate, the
prominent ingredient in most commercial antiperspirants and deodorants may stop sweating; as
a result, it creates a build-up of toxins. In addition,
a high level of aluminium has been linked to
several health problems that affect the central
nervous system most notably Alzheimer’s disease.
There are plenty of highly effective, safe, nonaluminium deodorants such as crystal deodorants,
natural deodorant roll-ons and sprays, which do
not block pores but still effectively stop odour and
inhibit excess sweating. Don’t be afraid to try an
alternative – they work!
It is not only natural skin care, natural wax candles
are also starting to be appreciated for their
benefits. At the Pure Source store, we make a
point of supplying only natural wax candles, which
do not emit any harmful carcinogens. Paraffin
wax, when burnt, is effectively the same as
burning gasoline producing the same emissions
as car exhaust. Furthermore, our candles provide
an aromatherapy treatment of its own; as the
essential oils burn, they emit their own benefits.
At Pure Source, we actually prefer our customers
to take time before they buy, to test how beneficial
the products feel on their skin. Natural products
leave out harmful additives but also promote our
overall well-being.
So do yourself a favour and do a bit of research.
Use your senses; a synthetic smell is obvious,
a natural scent more subtle and more likely
to incorporate pure essential oils used for
aromatherapy benefits. Feel the product on your
skin. It should work with the skin not against it.
All this contributes to a healthier appearance,
healthier body and healthier life, plus the fewer
chemicals we use, the less are dumped on our
eco system, making it better for everyone.

Why this serious treatment
has become a diet trend in
Hollywood and the media.
Take a walk through the health food section
of your supermarket; chances are you’ll find
gluten-free cereals, breads, crackers and
desserts.
So why are we seeing a trend towards more
gluten-free products? If you’re gluten sensitive,
eating foods that contain gluten can be
problematic and cause discomfort. If you are
unlucky enough to suffer from a condition called
celiac disease, gluten may go as far as causing
severe damage to the small intestine. Celiac
disease is an autoimmune disorder that causes
your immune system to attack your intestines in
response to gluten. Although the disease is not
immediately life threatening, symptoms may
include painful stomach cramps. The long-term
effects of consuming gluten may be serious
and include a compromised immune system,
increased risk of colon and other cancers,
anemia, low energy, and other complications
that can result from lack of immune function
and/or nutrient absorption. Untreated celiac
disease in children has been linked to anemia,
underdevelopment, and even autism.
To date, the only known treatment for celiac
disease is a completely gluten-free diet.
Although obviously well worth the effort
if you are a suffering or even if you are
gluten sensitive, eating gluten-free can be a
challenging proposition. So why are so many
non-sufferers following this strict way of eating?
Are there benefits for everyone?
Absolutely, is the succinct answer! Since the
best way to stay true to gluten-free is to eat
fresh fruits, vegetables and meats, and to
prepare most of your own meals, a glutenfree diet dictates you stay away from many
fatty, fried, and pre-packaged foods. Of
course, if you do not have celiac disease or
gluten intolerance, you may still consume the
occasional pizza and beer without negative
health affects. However, if gluten-free is your
primary way of eating, your diet is much more
likely to be fresh, nutritious, and high in natural
fiber and protein. It is much easier to stay lean
and feel healthy when you are eating food that
you prepare from scratch!
It is certainly not necessary to live a completely
gluten-free life unless you suffer from a serious
condition such as celiac disease. What is
certain is the health benefits of cutting out
processed and fatty foods are remarkable and
undeniable.
Inspire Tip
Many chefs do not know what ‘gluten
free’ really means and instructions get
lost in translation. One idea is to carry a
card that explains your dietary restrictions,
and hand it to the server. That way, he or
she does not have to write it all down, or
translate it for the chef.
| Health & Beauty P.58
WHAT IS GLUTEN?
Gluten refers to protein components, called peptides, found in wheat, barley and rye; so most flours,
breads, pastas, and beers are sources. Most oats also contain gluten, as do condiments such as soy sauce
and vinegar, gravies, sour cream, and other products that include thickeners or binders. It is even found in
many prescription medications, over-the-counter drugs, and dietary supplements.

Alternative
Solution
Dr. Jennifer Harper-Deacon PhD, MSc,
ND précis the key points of her acclaimed
health book, “Natural Care Detox
Handbook” published by Dorling Kindersley.
Detoxification has typically been viewed as a
stoical practice followed by health nuts, so if you
shudder at the very thought of following a carrotjuice detoxification programme, take heart. Why
not take it slowly and enjoy the changes as you
integrate new foods, change and develop your
taste buds to appreciate the fresh flavour of
unprocessed, natural, organic foods, herbs and
spices? The carrot juice can come later! Barbados
is the ideal place to make changes to your diet;
many of the best detox super foods I recommend
are readily available here and the gorgeous climate
makes it so easy to follow a lighter diet. These
foods include fish, organic eggs, sprouts (alfalfa,
broccoli and clover) cruciferous vegetables i.e.
cabbage, broccoli, avocado, beetroot, sweet
potatoes, fennel, tomatoes, onions & garlic, salad
leaves, asparagus, pineapple, limes and lemons
- all packed with antioxidants, phytonutrients,
vitamins and minerals.
My Natural Care Detox Handbook provides a
sophisticated new detoxification programme that
has little in common with the “quick-fix” detox
diets of recent times. Detoxification regimes must
change and adapt to our circumstances, as today
the tremendous toxic over-burdening of our body
exposes us to a greater number of chemicals
coupled with higher stress levels and exhaustion.
A programme must provide a safe and sustainable
approach, giving a powerful platform to guide
you to build and maintain a lifetime of good
health. I believe in combining the wisdom of
| Health & Beauty P.60
Eastern medicine, the practice of natural medicine
and the latest research in Functional medicine. I
advise a three-level, pyramid-style approach that
starts gently and becomes progressively more
deep acting. At each level, there are individual
programmes for body, mind and spirit that provide
a complete holistic detox.
A detoxification programme usually produces quite
dramatic results - increased energy, improved sleep
patterns, a sense of peace or calmness, decreased
bloating and fluid retention, fewer aches and pains,
mental clarity, and improved memory. However, it
needs to be fun, accessible - a personal voyage
where the outcome will be a cleaner, clearer body,
and a greater awareness and respect for your
body. The Detox Handbook teaches you to focus
on positive, nurturing thoughts because unless you
develop that ‘indefinable’ spark within, encouraging
and inspiring you on a deeper level, the changes
will be transient.
During detox, I advocate meditation to promote
inner peace, one of the prerequisites to maintaining
outer stability and balance. Many of the ancient
healing traditions understood that healing the body
involves healing the soul. As Plato said, “The
cure of any part should not be attempted without
treatment of the whole. No attempt should be
made to cure the body without the soul and if the
head and body are to be healthy you must begin by
curing the mind, for this is the great error of our day
in the treatment of the human body that physicians
first separate the soul from the body”.
Do you need to Detox? If you have 3 or
4 of these symptoms, you might need
to detox:
•Poor digestion, abdominal distension after
meals.
•Food sensitivities or allergies, heightened
sensitivity to environmental toxins (exhaust
fumes, paint, and tobacco).
•Lethargy and fatigue; a tired, ‘heavy’
feeling in the body.
•Discomfort under the left side of the rib
cage (spleen and stomach) or right side
(liver and gall bladder). Unable to nourish
oneself, a lack of self-worth.
•Bowel irregularities such as constipation
or diarrhea, strong odours from faeces or
flatulence.
•Poor lymph drainage such as body
swelling, oedema in legs and abdomen.
•Lowered immunity, prone to viral or
bacterial infections, fungal infections
including thrush, athlete’s foot etc.
•Dryness of the skin, psoriasis, eczema and
poor complexion.
•Nausea, vomiting, headaches and
migraines.

Heart Health
The health of your heart is one of the most important
indicators of your overall level of health. In fact, nothing is
more important in terms of living a long and healthy life.
With so much emphasis being placed on outer beauty, it’s no wonder that few people find the time to
take care of what’s inside—their heart. Several studies today show that the major cause of mortality is
coronary artery disease, which is the hardening and narrowing of the arteries that supply blood to the
heart muscle. Collapse of these arteries can lead to a heart attack, which is first indicated by a painful
tightening of the chest. THE SPARMAN CLINIC and WELLNESS CENTRE specializes in interventional
cardiology, with angioplasty as its trademark. The Clinic is designed to treat heart disease and prevent
cardiac events in high risk patient groups. High risk patients can be identified by the following: age,
family history, diabetes, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, smoking, sedentary lifestyle and obesity. While
it may not be possible to reverse some of these risk factors, it is very possible to reduce their impact.
Changes to your lifestyle, such as controlling blood pressure and diabetes and not smoking can each
make a significant difference. Additional changes include: exercising regularly (remember to consult
your physician before embarking on any exercise regimes), losing excess weight, lowering blood levels
of LDL cholesterol, increasing blood levels of HDL cholesterol, lowering blood levels of Lipoprotein A
cholesterol and triglycerides, increasing LDL cholesterol particle sizes, taking anti-platelet medications
to prevent blood clots (e.g. aspirin and plavix) and consuming antioxidants to prevent blood vessel
damage (though not scientifically proven to date).
At The Sparman Clinic and Wellness Centre, a team of experts are available to advise on how to best
reduce your risk factor and improve your health. As a one stop facility, the Clinic offers an ICU with 7
bed in-stay unit; state of the art fixed digital Cathlab with non-invasive cardiac equipment and a fully
equipped gym with personal trainers and dieticians. Also available is an ambulance service, shuttle
service, & Executive Physicals (where persons can enjoy a full hour body massage and healthy snacks,
while having blood tests and cardiac physicals in the Clinic’s VIP lounge).
At The Sparman Clinic and Wellness Centre, this philosophy remains: A healthy heart is the most
important indicator of your overall level of health. A healthy diet and regular exercise helps to reduce
the development of heart disease therefore making it possible for you to live a long and healthy life.

HOW DO YOU KNOW
IF YOU ARE HAVING A

• Chest pain, sometimes

• Shortness of breath
• Palpitations
• Syncope
• Fatigue

Men have a higher

however, women have

therefore women should

Smiling is one of the most natural
movements the body makes. It is
one of the greatest gifts you can
give to someone and even greater
gift to receive.
There’s an excellent reason why the smile is the universal language. A smile is ageless; it never goes
out of style. When you really consider it, a smile is instant messaging in its most basic form.
In recent years, the smile has emerged as the definitive symbol of beauty. It trumps eyes, hair…even
body. A brilliant smile has become an irrefutable factor in describing both beauty and personality.
Comments such as, “She’s got such a great smile,” are hardly ever used to describe someone who
comes across as inaccessible. Rather, such appraisal evokes admiration, even envy. It speaks of an
individual you’d love to model yourself after. Beauty and personality aside, a smile is also a good way
to gauge one’s overall state of health. Rejuvenation Dentistry is a philosophy that bases its foundation
on the premise that a healthy mouth helps to maintain a healthy body by preventing disease and
enhancing longevity.
The first step to achieving this is to establish a healthy and strong foundation in the supporting
structures of the mouth, particularly the bones and gums. Following this, various treatment modalities
are used to create a unique and stunning smile make over.
As we age, our front teeth wear and become shorter; the edges chip and become rough. Teeth
become more stained appearing more yellow or more brown. Gums may recede exposing more
of the roots. The elasticity of the gums is also lost as we age and therefore teeth have a greater
tendency to shift and rotate, resulting in overlapping especially in the front of the mouth.
All of these aging phenomena may be reversed. My patients have had success with cosmetic
procedures such as Enamel Microderbrasion (ultra fine polishing), Tooth Whitening (zoom bleaching),
Implants, Bridges, Porcelain Veneers, Porcelain Jacket Crowns, Bonding and Invisilign. With this wide
range of modern treatments available in Barbados, there is no reason to avoid smiling ever again!

IN GOOD TASTE
by Celeste Pontifex
FOR THE UNINITIATED, WINE TASTING CAN BE
INTIMIDATING. DON’T WORRY OUR SIMPLE GUIDE
CAN HELP GET YOU STARTED...
Wine is one of the most civilized
things in the world and one of the
most natural things of the world
that has been brought to the
greatest perfection, and it offers a
greater range for enjoyment and
appreciation than, possibly, any
other purely sensory thing.
Ernest Hemingway, Death in
the Afternoon.
First things first, appearance. What does your wine look
like poured into a clear glass? The colour will give an
immediate clue as to the age of the wine. Red wines start
life as a deep purple and with time, their colour turns to a
tawny with a paler brick red hue. The colour of reds may
also indicate what grape varietal has been used. For
example, a Pinot Noir tends to be paler whereas many
other red grapes, particularly in their youth would be
inky purple-black. White wines turns from lemon gold to
rich golden amber as it ages. Cool climate whites will be
less richly coloured; for example, a wine from Chablis
(France) will be paler than her Californian counterparts.
Be warned, certain grapes have a characteristic hue
such as the green tinge of Riesling. The term ‘legs’
captivated conversation at 1990’s dinner tables, as folk
awed and hummed over their wine and how wonderful
their ‘legs’ were within their glasses (i.e. long streaks
on inside of glass when swirled). This dear friends, is
simply an indication of alcohol content within a wine
and not quality. With reference to sparkling wines, ‘the
bead’ describes the size of bubbles generated by the
wine. Champagne generates a finer bead (i.e. smaller
bubbles) than other sparkling wines.
Next up, the ‘swirl and smell’. Everyone seems to
love to demonstrate this, and even exaggerate in
crowded environments. Swirling wine in your glass
immediately increases its contact with oxygen, which
releases aromas from the wines. When you stick your
nose into the glass, you are flooded by smells, which
are processed by the olfactory bulb, then relayed to
the hippocampus and limbic system, the portions of
the brain responsible for emotion/gut response and
memory respectively. Too much information I know!
The fact is, smell is entirely subjective; you are only
going to be able to identify a smell you have already
experienced. If you have never tasted a kumquat,
you’re certainly not going to pick that up in your glass
of wine! What exactly are we looking for when we smell
wine? Young wines will exhibit primary aromas relating
to the grape variety. Such smells are fruit related usually.
Wines with a little bit of age develop secondary aromas
which may be more ‘earthy’ or ‘animalistic’.
Finally comes the tasting! This part is entirely objective.
Your tongue acts as a touching device, which picks up
different sensations such as sweetness, acidity and
bitterness. On the ‘palate’, flavours are detected; the
presence and quantities of these flavour substances
tells us about quality, ageing potential and how well
the wine will drink with food etc. This empowers you
to select good wines and discard bad ones. After
swallowing the wine, you may still feel flavours linering
on for a while and this is called ‘length’. The longer the
length, the higher the quality. How else can we tell if
a wine is of good quality? Here are some other key
words to check when tasting wine; balance, complexity,
and concentration. When describing wines it is much
more interesting to talk about these points as opposed
to what smell, or how the legs look in the glass!
Wondering where to start your wine tasting experience?
You can always ask your local supplier for some
guidance, and I recommended trying 3 different whites
and 3 different reds with varying price points and styles
(or varietals). Cheers, salute, and prost!
EXTRA VIRGIN RULES
Extra virgin olive oil is widely regarded as the pinnacle of olive oils. The best extra virgin is
decided by two simple factors. How are the olives picked? Which pressing of the olives does
the oil comes from?
The best olive oil makers use only olives picked directly from the tree since olives that fall on
the ground become acidic. And acidic olives make for a poor olive oil. The second important
factor is the pressing. Top oils are extracted in the first pressing using the cold-press process.
Of course the olives themselves should be taken into consideration. It seems obvious, but
olives used to make oil should be ripe. Underripe or overripe olives produce poor olive oil.
When choosing an extra virgin olive oil, treat it a bit like choosing a fine wine, and engage your
senses. Smell is important but what really matters is taste.

Inspire meets dishy chef Scott Ames as he looks
forward to combining his day job as a top West

Inspire: What inspires your
cooking philosophy?
Scott: When I first came to
Barbados 9 years ago, I lead
a very simple life and ended up
picking fruit and spear fishing.
My first restaurant was actually

influenced me ever since. I
am a real advocate of using

very earthy, and simple to
recreate.
Inspire: Why an Internet show?
Scott: I am delighted that I am

of my time on the beach. I don’t
want to give away too much at
this stage, but you also get to

| COVER STORY
Today’s music industry thrives on placing talent in small boxes, as
though the public can’t appreciate anyone new who does not conform
to a preconceived script. So it is a blessing that the music powers that
be at Jive Records signed someone who defies easy categorisation.
Listening to Livvi’s music reveals almost too much. There is the
divalicious dance floor conqueror; responsible for the banging club
anthem “I’m That B.I.T.C.H.”. Or the natural carefree island girl of her
earlier single “Free”, whose breezy vocal styling transports you instantly
to a soothing Caribbean white sand beach. If Livvi’s sound is difficult
to classify, she is fine with that. The paradox reflects who she is as a
musician and person.
| Music & Culture P.90
Inspire: You are only 21 now but seem musically polished and experienced.
How old were you when you started singing?
LF: I have always sang and been fascinated with music. In fact, I was just 2
when my grandfather predicted I would be a musician when I was playing on
a piano. In school, I participated in pageants and sang whenever I could, at
friends’ birthday parties - whenever, wherever. And I wrote my first song at 11.
Inspire: So how did you make the leap from loving music to a career in
music?
LF: My manager, Kerrie Thomas-Armstrong, discovered me at 15. I spent a
couple years being developed and then recorded my first demo at 17 with
Classic Soul Productions in Barbados. When I was 18, I got two offers from
independent labels in the US, but waited until I was officially shopped the next
year. At that point, Jive Records, my label of choice and current label, made me

an offer. Sounds simple, but it wasn’t easy and I was lucky.
Inspire: Jive Records is such a big label! What was the process of being signed by
them?
LF: My first label choice was always Jive Records. So, with that knowledge in mind,
my team targeted the label and shopped me there first. Jeff Fenster, Senior VP of
A&R at Jive, was really enthusiastic about my sound and style! After four visits, I was
offered a deal.
Inspire: How do you define your musical style?
LF: Full of contradictions! But at my core, I am a pop artist with a unique sound that is
still commercially viable. Generally, my music will make you want to move.
Inspire: How does the Caribbean influence your music?
LF: My goal was to fuse my Caribbean heritage into a pop sound in a fresh way. I
think I managed to do that. Listening to my album will take you to the beaches of the
Barbados via NYC, LA and London!
Inspire: Who are your early musical inspirations?
LF: Katie Melua, Eva Cassidy, Etta James, Nelly Furtado, Lauryn Hill,
The Cranberries. These artists all taught me to embrace my uniqueness.
Inspire: If you were told you could only listen to 5 songs for the rest of
your life, which songs would you pick?
LF: I’m Like A Bird – Nelly Furtado, Ex-Factor – Lauryn Hill, By Your Side
– Sade. No Other Like Jah – Sizzla, Paper Planes – M.I.A.
Inspire: How did you come to the public attention internationally?
LF: After being signed, I spent a year and a half writing and recording
material for my album, working really hard. Then in 2009, my first two
singles “Free” and “Now I’m That B.I.T.C.H.”, were released in the UK and
US. It was a whirlwind of travel with interviews and photo shoots. Hearing
my songs on the radio for the first time blew my mind.
Inspire: What is the significance behind the lyrics of “Now I’m That
B.I.T.C.H.”?
LF: It’s about letting people, who may have bullied you or taken
advantage in the past, know that you are now in control and not
relinquishing control anytime soon.
Inspire: That sounds personal. Is it?
LF: Definitely! For me it says that I am in control of my life, my emotions,
my career.
Inspire: What was it like to work with Pitbull?
LF: I did not record the song with him, but I did work with him on the
video shoot. Completely professional and full of energy!
Inspire: So what factors helped your success?
LF: Hmmm… I can’t speak to external factors, but on my end I would
say lots of hard work, a great team and more hard work! I think my
sound helped.
Inspire: What inspires you? In your life and your career?
LF: Dedication and hard work. People who have the courage of their
convictions and people who do not settle for anything other than what
they truly want!
Livvi Franc’s new single “Automatik” is scheduled to be released in January 2010.

“Nasty Nigel”
NIGEL LYTHGOE
SPEAKS HIS MIND
INSPIRE: How did your career begin?
NL: At age 11, I enrolled myself in a dance class because I had a
passion for dance, I was inspired by Sammy Davis Jr., The Nicholas
Bros and Gene Kelly. Dance classes were also the best places to
find the prettiest girls! It was not popular for boys to take dance
lessons in those days, so my father quickly enrolled me in a boxing
club. However, my mother took me out because if I was going to
be a dancer, she didn’t want me to be an ugly dancer! After that I
moved on to choreograph various programmes, such as The Muppet
Show, The Morecambe and Wise Show, and several Royal Variety
Shows. Eventually I moved to LWT, where I became the Controller for
Entertainment and Comedy.
INSPIRE: Tell us about ‘Nasty Nigel’!
NL: During the first series of Pop Idol in the UK we needed an arrogant
person to sit on the panel. We had found this guy called Simon Cowell
(ever heard of him?). However, he was not available to start before the
first show so I stepped in as the mean judge and became known as
“Nasty Nigel”.
INSPIRE: Where is home?
NL: Los Angeles. But I love Barbados as you know! I love the
atmosphere, the people, my friends, the golf & the camaraderie.

5 TV shows to
own on DVD
There are shows we simply will not sit through. Bad
sitcoms overwhelmed with canned laugh tracks, most
so-called reality shows, and The View. Then there
are shows we’re perfectly happy to watch; Grey’s
Anatomy, Bones, even The Vampire Diaries. Good
actors, competent writing, major PR budgets... but
they don’t have ‘mustownability’.
Must-own shows have to be good; they also need
real rewatchability. Unlikely to be part of a Lifetime
or Bravo marathon, these shows need a compelling
story arc, the kind of writing that makes you cancel
any plans because you just have to finish. In fact,
some of the best DVD shows are those that do not flourish on network
television, because they rely on the audience having seen each
previous episode. But when you own them on DVD, you can be totally
invested in the stories and characters without fear of losing track. So in
no particular order, we present our top 5 DVD TV shows.
1. Battlestar Galactica – Recently lent the entire series to a reluctant
friend, who just is not “into Science Fiction” and received a thank you
note that sums up the experience of watching BSG perfectly. “Survival,
fear, how humans respond to religion in times of extreme vulnerability,
leadership, strength, weakness, power, love… I will never watch a TV
series again.”
2. Friday Night Lights – This show about a small town in Texas,
struggled on NBC before a ground breaking deal with Direct TV saved
it. And what a great save! Although not a big show in terms of audience
numbers, we have never met anyone who watched it who didn’t love
it. The super talented cast is given enormous freedom to improvise,
so over time the characters are so real, they feel like people you really
care about. Then there is Tim Riggins.
3. Lost – The sixth and final season starts airing in February 2010. What a ride it
has been. The mystery, the mind games, the jaw droppingly unexpected reveals. An
instant classic.
4. Entourage – This makes the list because of one endlessly watchable character.
Ari Gold. You will love him or hate him. Either way you will want to watch him. And
watch him again. And again.
5. Firefly – Cruelly cancelled by Fox after only 14 episodes, Joss Whedon’s
amazingly great space western spawned a big screen movie called Serenity that
was voted SFX magazine’s best sci-fi movie of all time, beating out some little
known films like Star Wars and Alien. We recommend you also give Firefly and
Serenity to all your friends; it is just that good.
All DVD series are available from Amazon.com who ship directly to Barbados.

Chattel Houses
| Music & Culture P.100
Feature |
A compilation of more than
one hundred beautiful platinum
paladium prints by Bob Kiss
will appear in a splendid book,
“Chattel Houses of Barbados”
in October 2010 published by
Toute Bagai Publishing.
The chattel house, icon of 20th century Barbados and a ubiquitous feature
of our landscape, has been rapidly disappearing, replaced by pragmatic
modern structures of less aesthetic appeal. Nevertheless, perhaps as
a result of the advocacy of the Barbados National Trust, and perhaps
because of a more general interest in heritage, there is a growing pride in
this unique design and its merits, and many people are proudly preserving
them. The term chattel house refers to a movable wooden house, built in
sections, which can be quickly taken apart and re-erected on a new site,
traditionally on a foundation of loosely packed coral stones. (Chattel was
the old English word for possessions). Traditionally a chattel house grew
with increasing wealth or family size, from a single rectangular structure,
by addition of units at the back of the “front house”, culminating in a “lean
to” or “shed roof” at the very back, accommodating the kitchen.
Older houses in the nineteenth century usually had a four-hip roof (all four
sides of the roof sloping towards a central ridge) , but this gave way in the
twentieth century to the more popular gable roof (with only two sloping
sides, as shown in the picture of the beautifully decorated house “On
the old airport road”. Houses were invariably symmetrical, with a central
front door, and windows on each side, and could be richly decorated with
bell pelmet window hoods and elegant fretworked bargeboards along the
edge of the roofs. The more affluent have pedimented porches, miniature
replicas of the grander plantation houses, as in our pictured house, built
around 1930. And in the older suburbs of Bridgetown there is a gradation
from the modest chattel house with its 14 or 16 foot frontage to the larger
middle class wooden suburban house of the school teacher or civil servant,
but built on the same principles, of wood, with serial gable roofs - a “chattel
house writ large”. Our second photo “Stormy sky” shows a splendid
example of a small, older house with a large open verandah on two sides
– taking full advantage of the wonderful tropical climate for outdoor living!
Scattered around Barbados are a few score chattel houses
proudly maintained by their owners, many more crying out
for restoration, or maybe beyond realistic repair, and some
converted as shops or restaurants, serving as a valuable link with the past,
and earning a living while doing so. Bob Kiss has done us a valuable
service in capturing these artistic and architectural gems through the
hallowed, traditional medium of platinum-palladium prints.

Artist Rachelle Gray on her very personal creative exploration.
My inspiration for ‘I Queen’ is the desire to photograph and exhibit a subject about which I am passionate, Rastafari women. I saw an
opportunity to allow the wider public to explore a subculture often marred by negative perceptions, and to show these women in a
positive light. Early in my career I chose to dedicate my life to redefining the visual representation of all things Caribbean; my intention in
photographing these women is to expose the latent beauty, truth and uniqueness of Caribbean life. Rachelle runs her own photography
studio GrayWorks Media Inc located in Speightstown.
It is my hope ‘I Queen’ ventures into the interior folds of Barbadian society exploring the beauty of Afro-Caribbean people.

WHY
BUSINESS
In these challenging times, more organisations are realising the benefits of Business Coaching.
Strategically focused Managing Directors can see that although there are costs involved in terms
of money and time, the investment is worthy, and will give long-term advantages to their business
through increased motivation and focus of employees.
The coach is there to help them:
• Build on their successes
• Work on the details that will sharpen their skills, and improve their techniques
• Plan tactics ahead of important events
• Stay at the top in a very competitive world
Teams also can have coaches, where specialist individuals help certain groups or players.
So what is ‘Business Coaching’? In a business context, coaching involves improving performance
by turning the things people do into learning situations, in a planned way to get the most out of the
situation. Through careful guidance, the coach transfers knowledge, skills and experience. In short,
it is about helping someone perform a skill or solve a problem better than they would otherwise
have been able to, and bringing improvements at work; especially where a change in performance
is required.
In the 16th century, Italian Scientist Galileo declared, “You cannot teach a man anything; you can
only help him find it within himself.” This statement is often confused by people who feel they are
coaching people when they are actually telling them what and how to do things. Coaching is a
voyage of discovery, where the coached sail into uncharted waters where they feel challenged and
uncomfortable, but learn new skills and gain new knowledge.

Invest Barbados on the Medical Tourism Industry.
A Premier Destination
for Health & Wellness.
Barbados, known the world over as an up-market
holiday destination and a sophisticated domicile
for international business, is now well poised to
carve out a special niche in the rapidly expanding
global health and wellness industry.
The trend of people traveling to locations to
promote and restore their physical, mental and
social well-being has been practiced for centuries.
Whether it was the legendary fountain of youth or
powerful medicinal herbs from remote locations,
humanity has been in pursuit of health and
wellness for generations. While this has been the
case for centuries, it was not until 1987 that the
expression “medical tourism” was coined.
Since the late 1980’s, medical tourism has grown
globally into a well-structured and immensely
successful driver of economic growth. Annually,
the global industry is worth more than USD$40
billion, and indications are that the sector will
continue to grow, amidst the turbulent economic
times. It has been estimated that an average of 30
million people travel for spa vacations, cosmetic
surgeries, cardiac treatments, dental surgeries
and other therapeutic and health related services.
Travel trends suggest that consumers will continue
to explore these health services to reduce
the increasing medical costs in the developed
world. Barbados provides a viable alternative,
given factors such as affordability, discreetness,
accessibility and quality standards.
Barbados, is ready to cater to this global market
of consumers who demand quality, confidentiality
and sophistication by providing access to a cadre
of well trained and highly professional experts in
disciplines and specialties including angioplasty,
pediatric cardiology, pacemaker implantation,
orthopedic surgery, cosmetic surgery, dental
surgery, ophthalmic surgery, homeopathy,
massage therapy, osteopathy, iridology and much
more. In Barbados, the consumer is guaranteed
to benefit from a quality wellness experience. The
range of facilities including the in-vitro fertilization
center, state of the art cardiac clinics, various
day spas, gym facilities and rehabilitation centers
along with the island’s tropical climate will make
this destination the Caribbean’s preferred wellness
choice.
Investment Opportunities in the Health and
Wellness Sector. The Health and Wellness sector
in Barbados offers an attractive investment
opportunity and the Government of Barbados is
working assiduously to ensure that measures
are in place to encourage its growth. In keeping
with the investor friendly policy used to promote
the island as a center for international business,
the Government is adapting the local incentives
regime to attract investment in the health and
wellness sector.
The International Business Companies Act, has
made it beneficial for foreign investors to setup
and operate medical transcription and intraocular
manufacturing facilities in Barbados. In addition,
the Tourism Development Act allows any health
and wellness tourism service company which
qualifies, access to waivers of capital expenditure
and 150% of interest, exemption from import duty,
value added tax and environmental levy in respect
of furniture, fixtures and equipment as well as
building materials, supplies and equity financing.
In addition, the country is positioning itself as
the Caribbean center for medical diversity and is
therefore inviting international service providers
to consider Barbados as an excellent strategic
partner. Access to Barbados is easy, with flights
to and from the major gateways in Europe and
North America leaving daily. Barbados also has an
excellent supply of highly trained professionals:
surgeons,
homeopaths,
alternative
care
providers and wellness experts. Medical tourism
facilities meet international quality standards
and, the support infrastructure, which includes
accommodation, information and communication
technology and regulatory framework are all of
world-class standards.
As Barbados continues to seek out innovative
ways to ensure the growth of its services sector,
more opportunities will be created in Health and
Wellness. There will be opportunities for strategic
partnerships across borders, to build and operate
a greater number of state-of-the-art facilities and
opportunities to share expertise and resources. As
Barbados marches forward, it will build on current
legislation in order to facilitate continued growth of
the sector. The excellent quality of service and the
opportunities for investing in health and wellness
make Barbados the preferred choice.
Barbados’ commitment to success is reflected in the adaptation of many of the best practices of the industry, including insistence on standards and accreditation
that are monitored by the Barbados Association of Medical Practitioners (BAMP), The Paramedical Council, The Caribbean Spa and Wellness Association
Barbados Chapter and the governmental regulatory body - The Ministry of Health. While some countries purport to offer first world services at third world prices,
Barbados
proudly
offersOFitself
as the
Caribbean center for medical diversity in a sophisticated yet relaxed environment.

Inspiration
My
My
PHOTOGRAPHY BY PHOTO DYNAMICS.
Selwyn Cambridge, founder of
The Entrepreneurial Network
(TEN) talks to Inspire about what
motivates him.
Inspire: What has been your greatest inspiration?
Inspire: What is your greatest fear, and how do you manage it?
SC: Back in college I realized that I held in my hands (like everyone else)
the power to make a difference in the lives of many by the choices I make,
even when others told me I couldn’t. That realization changed my approach
to everything I did forever. More recently the election of Barack Obama
solidified my belief in the power that determination holds. I remember the
morning after President Obama won, writing a note to everyone in my office
and pasting it on each of their computer screens. It said “It is amazing the
results determination and a resolve to make a difference can create! Never
let up on your dreams!”
SC: I used to have this overwhelming fear that I may never have enough
time to do all the things I need to get done. I have overcome this, and today
manage my time through what I call the “Six Shooter Approach!”. For me,
fear only becomes negative when you allow it to be so. Otherwise, it is an
energy that if channeled correctly into the right areas can create amazing
results.
Inspire: What ignited the spark to found The Entrepreneurial Network (TEN)?
SC: Having lived the experience of a startup entrepreneur myself, and
meeting countless others going through the same experience, there seems to
be a widely held feeling when starting your own business, that it is impossible
to emerge a success. I knew otherwise, and felt strongly I needed to help
people find the keys to the success they were looking for.
Inspire: If you could go back in time, is there anything you would do
differently?
SC: Start to do what I am doing now, only start it earlier!
Inspire: What are the top three tools or traits a successful entrepreneur
needs?
SC: Patience, perseverance and proper systems.
Inspire: How does being an entrepreneur affect your family life?
SC: I sometimes get concerned that my passion for entrepreneurship and
helping others, crowds my love and time for my family. Any committed
entrepreneur will tell you, it is an extremely delicate balance. My life is no
different. I continue to work on the balance.
Inspire: What has been the most satisfying moment in this business so far?
SC: The day I received a call from a total stranger who said, “Only last week
I was praying for an answer, when I saw your TEN programme. Thank you
for doing this!”
Inspire: Where do you see yourself in the next 5-10 years?
SC: In my office with my son sitting on my lap, showing me how he created
his own batman virtual experience, my daughter sitting across the room
planning my next overseas business trip to include visits to her “girly stores”,
and my assistant telling me that we were just able to help our 1,000th
entrepreneur increase sales! Life is good!

THE HOUSE THAT PORK BUILT
It’s Saturday morning and you’ve had 3 hours sleep.
But wait. It’s 11 o’clock! You’re late for Lemon Arbour!
Time to hop in the car and head off to scenic St. John for your
weekend pudding and souse fix, as well as a good old Bajan lime. As
you pull up to the Village Bar (dubbed Lemon Arbour by the locals)
you can’t help but marvel at how unassuming the whole scene is.
Who would have believed that a traditional Bajan chattel house on
the outside would open up to such an experience? Truly – this is the
house that pork built. Your mouth is watering as you approach the bar
to order. “What’s on the menu today?” You ask of your smiling hostess.
There is the basic pork lover’s dream – pudding and souse, BBQ pork
(rumored to be the best on the island), fried pork & pigtails. And of
course there’s the usual fare of rice & peas, macaroni pie, chicken, fish
& sea cat. Done with your placing order? Head on out to the sitting
area to be greeted with a panoramic view of St. John. Hardly a building
in sight….just the green fields, the blue skies and fresh country air.
All of the Saturday regulars are there, each group sitting in their self
designated area. By 12pm they’re onto seconds. Exactly what are you
waiting for? Dig in! Tel: 246 433 1992

FIT FOR GOLF
Inspire fitness expert, David Bayley recommends key exercises focusing on flexibility, static and dynamic stability, strength and power! Remember, golfers
are athletes and need a well designed conditioning programme to excel in their game. After assessing our golf enthusiast Graeme’s body alignment, David
tested for short, tight or weak muscles. Graeme’s diagnosis is a slight thoracic kyphosis, a protraction of the shoulders and a forward tilt of the head. He also
experiences lower back pain, has very tight hip flexors and upper trapezius muscles.
A. Piriformis Stretch
This stretch will increase the rotation in your trunk on
the back swing.
B. Lunge Stretch
A.
B.
Is used to lengthen the hip flexors. When these
muscles are short and tight, they limit your ability
to achieve a full rotation on your back swing. This
can also impede your follow through and limit the
distance on your drive.
C. Supine Russian Twist
C.
This is an excellent exercise for developing core
strength and also improves the strength of your
pelvic girdle, which is very important to your swing.
PHOTOGRAPHY BY JULIE WEBSTER.

PASSION FOR SPORTS
NOT CONTENT WITH MERELY SITTING ON THE SIDELINES, THESE TWO
PASSIONATE FANS HAVE FOUND RECOGNITION IN THE THICK OF THE ACTION.
TAKE ME TO
THE RACES
BY GAY SMITH
I love all animals, especially horses and dogs and
was going to train as a vet when I left school, but
things changed, I married and had 2 children.
When I was in my last years of school, I enjoyed
going on hacks with my friends whenever I was
invited. I never had a proper riding lesson (couldn’t
afford to have lessons) so I just kept practicing.
Before I moved to Barbados I used to ride at a
local stables in Surrey and enjoyed riding through
Windsor Great Park. I also used to go to the races
quite often.
When we moved to Barbados, I had the opportunity
to have my own horse and luckily could stable it
nearby and used to go riding with Edward Walcott,
who is now manager of my farm and trainer of my
horses. At that time it was just plantations all around
Sandy Lane Estate and we used to have a great
time riding wherever, sometimes even getting lost.
We would be out for hours!
We also bought some race horses and our trainer
then was the late William Marshall. We were quite
successful and won our first Gold Cup in 2003 with
Thady Quill, who is now one of my stallions at the
Farm. I won my 2nd Gold Cup with Sharp Impact
in 2006. These must have been my happiest days
in racing to date, although I have had many more
winners and places over the years.
We bought Springhead Farm a few years ago and
I now have 3 stallions and a dozen brood mares.
I keep all my racehorses at the farm and we
exercise them on the grounds, taking them to the
Garrison sometimes to get use to the track and
starting gates. I chose my jockey colours as I love
shocking pink, and with the blue stars it really made
them stand out.
CRICKET LOVELY
CRICKET
PHOTOGRAPHY BY SANDY PITT.
BY MAC FINGALL
While watching cricket I realised that Bajans don’t
really know how to support. They cheer when we
are doing well but keep quiet, fret, quarrel or curse
when we are down. So I decided somebody has
got to teach these people what support really is.
You see, when a man is hungry he needs food;
when a man is naked he needs clothes; when a
man is down he needs support. So I would exhort
the Kensington Stand to cheer and give support
when we are down.
My most special memory of cricket at Kensington
Oval is the test match between West Indies and
England in the nineties. Jack Russell, the English
wicketkeeper, had come in as night watchman
the evening before and he and his partner batted
through the entire pre-lunch period without any
sign of getting out. I was at home listening on the
radio and my sister Patsy said “yuh en gine down
and help the West Indies? Yuh en see duh can’t
even get the night watchman out!” So I packed up
all my things and prepared the “Duppy Dust”. As
soon as I walked in the extremely quiet crowd in
the Kensington Stand erupted and started to cheer
loudly.
I gave the Trumpet a blast, and threw a little Dust
and suddenly Jack Russell edged the ball - the first
sign of anything “close” for the morning. I threw
some more Dust and the next ball Russell was out.
The crowd went crazy. I threw some more Dust.
Curtley Ambrose began to bowl with new life as I
beat the drums to the rhythm of his footsteps. In a
hurry, Curtley bowled them out for about 8 for 25.
West Indies won the game with time to spare. We
jumped the fence and partied hard on the field. It
was a great moment.
As a little boy going to cricket at Kensington Oval,
I used to get quite excited watching Gary Sobers.
Just seeing him walk with such easy grace was
thrilling. So when he batted it was orgasmic;
everyone just went crazy. Wes Hall too was great
to watch. I considered him an entertainer. Later
on my favourites were Michael Holding and Vivian
Richards.
My thoughts on the new Kensington Oval? It is
beautiful. I feel so proud everytime I go there. It’s
like playing cricket in Heaven.
