CRITTER MAGAZINE • OCTOBER 2010 • PAGE 3 Point of View No Justice for Samson and Epic By Sharon Nataline and Jessica M. Torrence Around 3 pm on August 12, 2010, two Great Danes slipped out of their caretakers yard when a family member accidentally left the gate open at the Marion County home of Holli Tencza. Less than one mile from their home, Samson and Epic were shot. Epic was pronounced dead on the scene as Samson, gasping for air, continued to fight for his life. The Great Dane died later that night in the care of emergency veterinarians. The tragedy began when Chris Monteiro called 911 to report the two animals, claiming they tried to attack him while he was working inside his garage. The 911 operator instructed Monteiro that the best course of action was to stay inside his home and someone would be sent out to help. Instead, Monteiro went outside a second time, armed with his Glock 9mm pistol. He said he saw the dogs chasing children down the street and shot the two Great Danes when they ran toward him as he stood in his yard. Witnesses told Kray, Tencza‟s lawyer, that the dogs weren‟t in Monteiro‟s yard, but that Monteiro was in the road. Witness statements also state that there were no children outside playing and the dogs were nowhere near him. They were running toward a field, not at Monteiro. Kray said that by Monteiro‟s defying the 911 operator‟s See us at Petsmart in Gainesville on Archer Rd. every Sat. 11:30 am to 4 pm. “We speak for those who have no voice” Adoptions held at the Humane Society on Fridays 10:30 - 2 Be sure to visit us at our indoor/outdoor yard sale every Thursday, Friday, & Saturday from 10:30 - 2! PAGE 4 • CRITTER MAGAZINE • OCTOBER 2010 Epic and Sampson advice to stay inside, by his getting his gun and falsely claiming there were children outside playing, and by stepping out onto the road, his intent all along was to kill the dogs. Three-hundred grieving and frustrated people, with nearly 100 dogs in tow, gathered at the Ocala Downtown Square on September 2 to hold a candlelight vigil to mourn two dogs they say were needlessly killed. Unfortunately, an NRA-backed measure, approved by Congress and signed into statute in 2005, tied the hands of the justice system. The “Stand Your Ground” bill, now F.S. 776.013, states, “a person…has no duty to retreat… and [can] meet force with force,” and this law caused the issue to be legally convoluted. The State Attorney announced on September 21 that he would not be charging the shooter of Samson and Epic, in part because the shooter says he was in fear for his life and that they couldn‟t prove criminal activity. But Monteiro is not innocent. He admitted he killed the family pets. He was not prosecuted because Florida allows people to protect themselves from a perceived threat without backing down. Now, that law has been used to protect a man who left the safety of his home to shoot two dogs that could not have pursued him. He did not “stand his ground,” but instead re-entered the situation after placing the 911 call. It is obvious someone lobbied to protect people from people. Who will lobby to protect animals from people? This is not justice. They were dogs! Not burglars, not murderers, not rapists trespassing on land, breaking into homes. Animals are different and deserve different laws. We need to lobby for laws that protect our pets and wildlife from their greatest threat, people. Today, Tencza can take some solace in the fact that the investigation was re-opened, and the State Attorney moved quickly to investigate the situation. Visit “Justice wanted for Epic and Samson” on Facebook for more information and to show your support. Please contact the Fifth Judicial Circuit, Brad King, State Attorney, 19 NW Pine Av., Ocala, FL 34475, 352.620-3800, to let Marion County officials know that Monteiro should not go unpunished. Please contact your Florida Congressman and let them know laws need to be changed. Together we can work to insure our beloved pets will be protected in the future. A walk in the woods, aka a hike, is a healthy, mentally and physically stimulating activity for both you and your dog. Conditioning and planning are key elements to your enjoyment. Dogs pant to cool off so use caution on excessively hot days. Consider heat index (temperature/humidity level) and physical conditioning for each of you when planning a hike. Conditioning means building up to long hikes gradually. Your dog‟s paw pads need to callus up a bit, his aerobic fitness needs to be satisfactory and he needs to know a few basic commands and trail etiquette. Be sure to offer your dog cool water frequently; plan on 1/3 cup of water for every half mile. Use a wide-mouthed bowl to offer the water as it helps catch the splashes. You may pour the unused portion back into your dog‟s water carrier and gauge how much water your dog is actually ingesting. Condition your dog for hiking by walking together regularly. Build up your distance gradually. Your dog will encounter sand, dirt, water, gravel, weeds and perhaps some concrete or asphalt on hikes. Be sure to condition your dog for all of these walking conditions. Be aware of the temperature of concrete, asphalt or sand and the impact on your dog‟s paws. Hike in the shade as much as possible. A waist leash or sturdy belt with your leash attached is a great way to hike with your dog, and it allows your hands to be free. It‟s handy if your dog will respond reliably to “sit,” “stay,” “come,” and “leave it” commands. Many hikers also train their dogs to respond to “this way” and “that way” (or “right” and “left”) on command. When encountering another hiker on the trail, practice good trail manners and have your dog move off to the side and sit/ stay until the hiker passes. Not all humans appreciate dogs and you are an ambassador for all dogs on trails every time you hike. If another dog is approaching, again have your dog sit/stay off to the side of the trail. Confirm agreeability with the other person before you let your dogs meet nose to nose. If your dog relieves himself on the trail, be sure to pick it up and pack it out. Trash receptacles are usually available at the trailhead. Familiarizing yourself with the trail you‟ll be visiting may be as simple as picking up a map at the trailhead, and/or preparing ahead of time by visiting the park‟s website to be sure dogs are allowed. That‟s where being a good dog ambassador comes in … we don‟t want to lose the privilege of hiking with our dogs due to someone else‟s poor trail etiquette! There are innumerable trails to hike throughout North Central Florida. Check websites for the city parks, county parks, state and national parks, local, state and national forests, plus the water management district properties, preserves and more. You‟ll be amazed at all there is to explore with your canine companion. Read up, harness your pup and hit the trail! The college will be offering the tours after construction and remodeling is complete, anticipated to happen in mid-October. In November 2008, university administrators, students, and supporters gathered for the groundbreaking ceremony of the $58 million new facility. Now, just two years later in November 2010, the state-of-the-art building is scheduled to open for business. Of the many aesthetic qualities of the hospital, visitors will find artist-rendered stained glass decorating the new hospital atrium. UF's new Small Animal Hospital will provide medical and surgical care as well as 24/7 emergency services to cats, dogs, birds, and exotic pets. The 100,000 square foot building will serve the community where boardcertified veterinarians, supported by certified veterinary technicians, fulfill the hospital's mission, “Here when you need us.” The Small Animal Hospital is located at 2015 S.W. 16th Ave in Gainesville. Be Prepared Fire Prevention Week - October 3-9, 2010 In case of fire or other emergency, it‟s important to get out of your home - quickly. Don‟t stop to look for your pets. Leave that to your parents and the professionals. Tell how many pets you have and where they are in your home. But what of you‟re not home when there‟s an emergency? You can still let emergency workers know who‟s inside. Fill in the form above. Then color the rest if it using bright, eye-catching colors. Laminate the form or cover it in clear contact paper. Then place it in a window or on an outside door at home. If you don‟t have a pet, color and give this form to a neighbor. Along with her family, she shares her life with her horse and her companion, a miniature horse, as well as two rescued dogs and a cat. A talented writer, she covers a variety of topics like motherhood, divorce, and living with disabilities, all through a variety of genres including biographies, humorous essays, and children‟s books. Animals and the lessons we can learn from them are a common theme in her writing. Several of her books feature characters who were inspired by animals Mickle met in her own life. In 101 Dog Street, a chapter book for second graders and other young readers, Amos the dog travels on an adventure with his canine friends and solves mysteries with Tessee, a wheelchair-bound girl who lets the dogs ride on her lap. Mickle says, “Amos and the other dogs are all based on real dogs from my neighborhood, featuring a variety of breeds like bloodhounds, poodles, Labrador retrievers, and terriers.” Her book Barbaro: America’s Horse, chronicles the life of famed racehorse Barbaro, told from the horse‟s point of view. The book details Barbaro‟s birth, training, racing career, Kentucky Derby win, injury, and his final days. Also intended for young readers, ages 9 through 12, the book features a story of hope and determination, along with beautiful pictures of Barbaro. Following her precedent of donating to charitable organizations, Mickle has committed two-thirds of the proceeds of her newest book, Jason and Elihu: A Fisherman's Story, toward programs dedicated to strengthening families. Jason and Elihu tells the story of young Jason, who is determined to catch the legendary bass, Elihu, and hear the secret the fish whispers once it is caught. Jason‟s story is populated with other memorable characters, including two foster children, a miniature horse with a love of peppermints, and a young girl recalibrating her life after a brain tumor robs her of her balance and her dream of becoming an ice skater. Mickle says the miniature horse, Sundance, is a real-life horse who is a member of Gentle Carousel Miniature Therapy Horses. He was trained by the directors of the non-profit organization specifically to appear as a character in the book. Mickle says, “He kisses his photo in the book as a way of „signing‟ it. He has a fan base starting to follow him. They buy the book at Publix, then go to wherever he is appearing.” Several of Mickle‟s books can be purchased at Publix, as well as on www.Amazon.com, and on the publisher‟s website, www.wildonionpress.com. Wild Onion Press also features lesson plans and reading guides on the website for teachers who plan to use the books in the classroom. You can also check this website for pictures of Sundance‟s book signing appearances and news on upcoming events featuring this unforgettable miniature horse. It isn't just one of your holiday games. T.S. Eliot wrote that…well at least it was something that sounded like that. He also wrote that there never was a cat so clever as Magical Mr. Mistofelees, and now that we've met him in person, the Micanopy Animal Hospital staff can definitely vouch for that. From the minute he appeared out of thin air in a parking lot and spoke his magic words to one of the technicians, he's had a spell firmly cast over everyone who's met him. Unfortunately, Mistofelees has also had an evil spell cast on him: Feline Immunodeficiency Virus, also known as feline AIDS. Despite this evil spell, he should be able to live with other cats, provided they get along with each other, but he should stay indoors. Although Mistofelees doesn't prefer to perform his magic tricks for dogs, he can coexist with them if they don't bother him too much, and he absolutely LOVES to perform for people of all ages. Come be dazzled and amazed by him! He's waiting for a new stage! Reed - Step right up and meet the most amazing doggy acrobat ever! Reed has performed around the world....okay, mostly just around Micanopy, but still he's amazing! You've never seen a doggy who jumped so high, ran so fast, or cuddled so many kittens! Reed can run long distances and jump through firey hoops! Okay, so maybe he's a little afraid of the firey hoops, but there was one thing he wasn't afraid of: heartworms! Reed has vanquished heartworms and is now ready to come do his tricks for you! Reed is a gentle boy, he loves adults and children, dogs and cats, and is never ever mean. (In fact, you'd probably have to worry that he'd be the one getting pushed around!) Call Micanopy Animal Hospital today and make a date with this adorable and talented boy! What could be better than a new dog or cat to play with and love? Nothing, that's what! Can't afford a new animal right now? That's where fostering comes in, and Micanopy Animal Hospital needs your help! We are looking for loving, enriching foster homes for our adoptable animals. We have several dogs and cats who need some extra love, and we need responsible people who will give them plenty of playtime and socialization, to get them ready to go to their forever home! We have several options, including long and short term foster opportunities, even day trips! Call us today, help an animal in need! If you’re interested in any of these great pets, stop by Micanopy Animal Hospital 306 NE Highway 441, Micanopy or call (352) 466-0067. They’re already trained, with no personality surprises for you … and they need your love. ADOPT A SENIOR PET! URGENT!! NEW HOME OR FOSTER CARE NEEDED! Hi, my name is Eskimo, or "Eski" for short. I’m an 8-year young neutered male, and I'm full of energy. I enjoy spending my time playing with my favorite toy, or napping in a human lap. I'm very intelligent, inquisitive, and I quickly learn new things. I'm quite agile, soft, and appear light as a feather. I sometimes sneak into a lap without even being noticed. I live indoors, and I also enjoy spending time on the porch watching wildlife. I have current rabies shots, and a microchip in case I get lost. My favorite things to play with are mini-mouse toys that I can chase around the house. I have a sensitive tummy, so I eat strictly grain-free canned cat food--no human food. However, I do love cooked chicken livers. I'm looking for a loving home where I will get lots of attention and “lap time.” Sadly, I am in need of a home ASAP due to my caretaker’s severe allergies and asthma.
