Giving back Empowering sectors of the society Corporate Citizen like-minded institutions Synergy for a common cause Excellence Engaging 2011 Annual Report Journey Towards Excellence in CSR A roadmap gives one a sense of direction. For travelers, it aids them in exploring their way towards their destinations. Like a compass, a roadmap sets the tempo of your course and it leads you to the right path. Like a lodestar, a roadmap helps one to focus and avoid unnecessary and miscalculated steps. In its thirty three years of CSR journey, the Metrobank Foundation has always been guided by a roadmap: that is to bring out the best in the Filipino people – teachers, students, artists, policemen and women, soldiers, and to our communities through its social development partners. We take pride that we are one of the Filipino corporate foundations that celebrates excellence and honor the outstanding contributions of ordinary individuals who choose to be exemplars in their respective fields. We inspire and empower them to give back to their respective spheres of influences. We continuously engage likeminded institutions and harness relationships with the government Community building. Healthy Citizenry. Uplifting lives. Compassion. Dedication. Responsibility. These are our buzzwords that serve as our roadmap towards excellence in CSR. Our MISSION To realize its vision, the Foundation shall propagate a culture of excellence with a human face by actively implementing, assisting, and supporting programs which strengthen and advance the strategic sectors of society as well as respond to the needs of the disadvantaged. Annual Report 2011 1 Turning Words into Action T he Metrobank Foundation was built on one of the values dear to Metrobank’s business philosophy: social responsibility. Specifically, we believe that leadership in business entails leadership in community service as well. After, nearly half a decade of its existence and sustained leadership in the banking industry, Metrobank remains steadfast in its commitment to corporate citizenship as exemplified by the enduring involvement of the Foundation in corporate social responsibility. Over the last three decades, the Foundation has redefined the concept and practice of corporate social responsibility, transforming grants and awards into sustainable investments in human development and nation building. Beyond serving as an expression of gratitude and a reward for their excellence, our recognition programs for outstanding Filipinos have become a testament to the abilities and potential of our institutions and people to bring about change. From the simple sharing of resources, our grant-making initiatives have evolved into dynamic partnerships for the shared pursuit of progress and development. In 2011, we are proud to have continued to build on and reinforce the Foundation’s legacy. We honored another corps of exemplary individuals who share and epitomize our core values of excellence and service to the wider community. We strengthened long-standing partnerships and forged new ones in pursuit of our goal of making sustainable contributions to enhance the quality of life of our people, particularly the disadvantaged, through collaborative projects in education, health, and the arts. At the same time, our collective efforts and hard work have been affirmed by the commendations we received 2 M etrobank Foundation, I nc. Even as we celebrate these achievements, we know very well that our work is never done. The Foundation is constantly challenged to be more strategic and results-oriented in our work, making sure our programs and advocacies are more relevant and responsive to our stakeholders and publics. To succeed, we must continue to exercise focus, accountability, and transparency, while remembering who will ultimately gain from our CSR commitments: the Filipino people whom we seek to inspire, and whose lives, we aspire to change for the better. As the Metrobank Foundation embarks on another year, we share with you our accomplishments from 2011 and hope you continue to join us in our CSR journey. DR. GEORGE S.K. Our engagement in MDGs is at the heart of the Foundation’s steadfast commitment to nation building. Throughout the year, the Foundation enjoyed the enduring support of our institutional partners and stakeholders with whom we have formed strong and successful partnerships for our different programs. We are thankful for these relationships and look forward to more fruitful years of working together to uplift the lives of our people and inspire the best in the Filipinos. As we report to you our humble achievements in another milestone year for us at Metrobank Foundation, we also express our gratitude and appreciation to our Boards of Trustees and Advisers for their unwavering trust and guidance. Combined with the unrelenting hard work and diligence of our officers and staff, there is no doubt we will continue to deliver on our commitment to remain a leader in CSR in the many years to come. ANICETO M. SOBREPEÑA President Annual Report 2011 5 Creativity Integrity Nation-builders Inspiration Community service Exemplars Building the future Service 2011 Search for Outstanding Teachers awardee Mrs. Marcela Jingco from Angeles Elementary School with the winners of the MetrobankMTAP-DepEd Math Challenge (MMC) (from left): Andrea Jessica Jaba (St. Jude Catholic School); Farrell Eldrian Wu (MGC New Life Christian Academy); and Nathan Joseph Oranga (St. Jude Catholic School). What makes an outstanding Filipino? Each year, the Metrobank Foundation searches for exceptional individuals who embody the best in our people and who represent our best values: commitment to excellence and passion for service; hard work and dedication; courage and honor; creativity and innovativeness. Their exemplary achievements in their own fields are inspiring beyond words. Their remarkable stories of hope and inspiration are the good news the Foundation will continue to share with the Filipinos. Annual Report 2011 7 Classroom Heroes “Where I am from, everyone is a hero.” When Efren Peñaflorida was named CNN Hero in 2009 for bringing learning to underprivileged children through his Dynamic Teen Company’s mobile classroom project, “Kariton Klasrum,” the veracity of these words resonated among millions of Filipinos. Indeed, throughout the country’s history, our innate sense of heroism has turned many an ordinary man, woman, and youth into much-admired icons in their fields. For the last 27 years, the Metrobank Foundation’s Search for Outstanding Teachers (SOT) has been honoring everyday heroes in education, who mold the minds and hearts of our young people, imparting their knowledge to and inspiring budding leaders of the nation. In 2011, the Foundation awarded 10 outstanding teachers who represent the finest examples of competence, commitment, and dedication to their noble profession. Deemed by the awardees as the pinnacle of their professional lives, the award also serves as a challenge to carry on their commitment to mentor the foundations of a brighter and better future for the country. 306 outstanding teachers have been honored since 1984 8 M etrobank Foundation, I nc. It is a challenge 63-year old awardee Teodora D. Conde, Ph.D. has embraced and lived out in a career that spans four long, but gratifying decades. A consummate Science educator, Dr. Conde of Andres Bonifacio Elementary School in Sta. Cruz, Manila has made learning about the world and its phenomena easy and enjoyable for students by developing innovative and interactive instructional materials and devices. A true nurturer, she introduced – among other inventive strategies in teaching the subject – the Child-Friendly Approach, which not only helps students learn academic content but also addressed their inner and hidden feelings. Dr. Jericho Thaddeus P. Luna enjoys best of both noble professions in his dual role as a medical doctor and an associate professor at the University of the Philippines College of Medicine-Philippine General Hospital. Honed by years of practice with medical institutions and societies, Dr. Luna’s contributions in the field of obstetrics and gynecology study have literally saved countless lives. His research on minimally invasive surgery for gynecologic malignancies or cancer has given options to patients to undergo less radical procedures that retain fertility. Dr. Luna shares these innovations and expertise with his students, colleagues in the field, as well as the government by training municipal health workers on prenatal care, obstetric emergencies, and gynecologic cancer prevention and screening. The 2011 SOT winners, together with the awardees of the Foundation’s excellence award programs for The Outstanding Philippine Soldiers (TOPS) and the Country’s Outstanding Policemen in Service (COPS), were awarded with gold medallions by His Excellency President Benigno S. Aquino III in ceremonies held at the Malacañan Palace. Collectively hailed as Metrobank Foundation Outstanding Filipinos, they were recognized as exemplars in public service by President Aquino, who expressed the gratitude and appreciation of the entire nation for their contributions to nation building. Conveying a response on behalf of the awardees, outstanding teacher Marcela E. Jingco of Angeles Elementary School in Angeles City, Pampanga pledged the awardees’ support to the government’s campaign to revive the values of honor and duty in public service: “Your Excellency, you are assured of our continuing commitment to serve as instruments in carrying out the government’s advocacy of ‘Tuwid na Daan.’” Future Leaders The Foundation has always held a strong faith in the Filipino youth and their potential. They are at the heart of the Foundation’s interventions in education, which is the most significant investment it can make on their future. Through the Foundation’s College Scholarship Program (CSP), it helps poor but deserving students fulfill their dreams of obtaining high quality education in the finest schools in the country. In the past year, 28 scholars graduated from the various scholarship programs implemented by the Foundation together with partner schools nationwide. Leading the graduates is Elvin Cruz, a magna cum laude Civil Engineering graduate from the University of the Philippines-Diliman. He and his fellow scholars gathered during the annual Graduates’ Forum where they shared their respective stories of overcoming adversities, and were inspired by a special lecture on Philippine national hero, Jose P. Rizal. “Most of you might relate to my story, but one thing for sure is common to all of us: Metrobank Foundation served as our stepping stone to our success as graduates today. They believed in our potential more than we did,” stated Elvin, recalling how the CSP has taken an average “promdi” places and allowed him to dream big dreams. Content with his initial plans to attend the best college in his province, graduate, and get a high-paying job in his hometown, Elvin took a different path when he passed the UP College Admission Test (UPCAT). Despite the financial challenges, he pursued the opportunity to be an Iskolar ng Bayan. On his third year at the university, Elvin applied for the Foundation’s scholarship program, and luckily, got in, becoming one of the close to 900 scholars assisted by the Foundation since CSP was established in 1995. Close to 900 college scholars assisted since 1995 Annual Report 2011 9 Echoing the Foundation’s only appeal to the scholars in return for the gift of education they received and attesting to Rizal’s conviction that “the youth is the hope of the motherland,” Elvin exhorted his peers: “Metrobank Foundation has shown us that it is not enough that we achieve academic excellence but also develop leadership so that we may contribute more effectively to society. It is then our responsibility to continue improving ourselves to be one of the best, if not, the best in our respective chosen careers, and serve this nation with outmost patriotism and integrity.” Young Math geniuses likewise, remain a source of confidence and optimism for the Foundation, which bears witness to their indomitable spirit and strong sense of discipline as they battle it out in the annual Metrobank-MTAP-DepEd Math Challenge (MMC). On its 10th year, MMC gathered more than half a million students, upholding its stature as the most prestigious and widely participated competition among elementary and high school students in the country. Continuous overwhelming response from both participants and institutional partners strengthens the Foundation’s resolve to advance Math education in the country and to inspire and reward the achievements of young Math enthusiasts like Carmela Antoinette Lao of St. Jude Catholic School in San Miguel, Manila. Since 1998, the Metrobank Math Challenge has 712 national winners , produced some of whom have joined and won medals in international competitions “If we eliminate as many of our distractions as possible and just concentrate on achieving growth, we will achieve boundless growth and our limit is only infinity,” Carmela opined. Considered an MMC veteran, the 2011 4th Year Individual Champion first had joined the competition at the age of seven and had been a first placer for the Grade 6 Individual and Team Categories in 2007. Carmela credited her experiences in MMC for her subsequent successes in international contests such as the 50th and 51st International Mathematical Olympiad (IMO) where she took home silver and bronze medals, respectively. She and the sixteen (16) 2011 MMC national winners, received more than P600, 000 in total cash prizes, trophies, and medals. Fifty percent (50%) of the winning students’ prize money was converted into Metrobank Fun Savers Club savings accounts to instill in them the value of saving at an early age. Creative Geniuses A fundamental component of the Foundation’s aspiration to build the nation is to nurture its soul: the inimitable creativity of the Filipinos as embodied by our rich and vibrant artistic traditions. For nearly three decades, the Foundation, through its pioneering Metrobank Art & Design Excellence (MADE) competitions, has been at the forefront of promoting artistic excellence. In 2011, MADE presented a new crop of promising visual artists, architects, and designers, who demonstrated sophistication in 500,000 students More than joined the elimination rounds of the 2011 Metrobank Math Challenge 10 M etrobank Foundation, I nc. styles and techniques, but also audacity in the choice of themes with majority of the winning works serving as commentaries on the changing social, political, and cultural landscape of the country. Jericho Valjusto G. Vamenta, grand prize winner in the oil on canvas category of the painting competition, reflected on the changing roles of men and women in the society, particularly in the domestic setting. His work, entitled “Ang Maleta sa Mundo ni Tatang Danilo,” depicts a woman in working clothes that denote her dominance as the breadwinner, and her “houseband,” hovering around her in a skirt. The adept use of symbolisms combined with the rendering of images in reverse coloring, reinforced this reversal of roles and apparent shift in power between the sexes. Staying true to the competition’s advocacy, “Your Environment Shapes You,” that focuses on sustainable design and use of indigenous materials for artistic expression, grand prize winner Interior Designer Angelo Venci S. Del Mundo presented a Filipino home with an urban-Asian lifestyle. His design mixes touches of Chinese in furniture and “green” accessories (bamboo shades, sea grass rugs) used in the living spaces. His color selection of green subliminally echoes current design trends and creates a tranquil ambience. “I like spaces that tell a story and (love) taking inspiration from the simplest of things,” he explained. Meanwhile, sculpture competition grand prize winner, Architect Jonathan V. Dangue takes a philosophical look at the nature of materiality and human happiness using the metaphor of the human hand in his opus “Walang Pinanghahawakang Anuman sa Palad.” Carefully crafted from bamboo sticks, the modernist sculpture is a reminder that one is born “without anything in our hands, and even in our death we cannot bring our possessions.” Knowing this, Dangue believes that one should focus instead on being content and having a positive disposition in life, dealing with whatever it throws one’s way and moving on despite all the struggles and failures. Over the years, MADE has recognized and launched the careers of over 371 young artists and designers in the country Annual Report 2011 11 The selection of winning works proved to be tough for the judges comprised of eminent personalities and experts in the fields of arts and design, as entries across all categories of the competition were at records high last year. Following a more aggressive information campaign through the use of social media and engagement of its partner institutions, the architecture competition for instance, posted a 133% increase with half of submissions coming from the Visayas and from Mindanao. Coincidentally, the grand prize went to Arch. Oscar J. Peñasales of Iloilo for his re-imagination of the traditional nipa hut. The 2011 MADE winners were feted in a lavish ceremony attended by top executives from the Metrobank Group, famous personalities in business, art community, diplomatic corps, politics, and media. A grand exhibit featuring the winning and semi-finalists’ works was also unveiled during the event held at the Le Pavillon. Protectors of the People Theirs is a path most of us are not brave enough to take. But for the gallant men and women in uniform who took the road less travelled, the journey proved to be a truly rewarding one. Such is a sentiment shared by the 2011 awardees of the Foundation’s Excellence Awards Program to recognize and reward exemplary performances and achievements among members of the Philippine National Police through the Country’s Outstanding Policemen in Service (COPS), and of The Armed Forces of the Philippines through the search for The Outstanding Philippine Soldiers (TOPS). Dedicating it to the 130,000-strong police force, Police Superintendent Steve B. Ludan regards the award as an affirmation of the PNP still being an honorable institution sustained by the commitment of yet many among its members, who continue to uphold the values of service, honor, and justice in carrying out their duties. The current Chief of the Budget and Fiscal Office of the PNP Aviation Security Group, PSpt. Ludan is an accomplished crime fighter, who was responsible for the neutralization of a number of kidnap-for-ransom groups and the dismantling of shabu laboratories in Cavite and Laguna. While the life of duty may be more challenging for them, female members of the National Police like Police Chief Inspector Delia Jacob Ingalla proved that it could not hinder them from excelling at their job. PCInsp. Ingalla is among the three women COPS awardees dedicated in championing and protecting the rights of women and children. Their compassion and empathy in handling highly sensitive cases help keep families safe, protect communities, strengthen public confidence in the police force, and reinforce the PNP’s moral renewal program. During her two 111 soldiers 88 policemen Metrobank Foundation continues to honor top men and women of the Armed Forces of the Philippines and the Philippine National Police 12 M etrobank Foundation, I nc. years as the chief of the Women and Children Protection Desk /Family, Juvenile, Gender and Development (FJGAD) Section of the Taguig City Police Station, PCInsp. Ingalla has rescued numerous victims of sexual, domestic and other forms of abuses, sending their perpetrators to jail. Like her female colleagues in the National Police, 2011 TOPS awardee Master Sergeant Ma. Teresita M. Bitong has had her share of difficulties trying to fulfill her sworn duty as a member of the Philippine Air Force and her obligations as a wife and a mother. But through her fortitude and perseverance, MSgt. Bitong was able to lead a full and balanced life while in the Air Force, raising the bar of outstanding service to the military with her accomplishments. During her first few years in the service, MSgt. Bitong worked for the Presidential Security Group (PSG) and together with her peers, provided an unflinching guard to the late President Corazon Aquino during some of the most fraught years in her presidency, including the 1989 military coup. Indeed, TOP winners like Colonel Daniel A. Lucero are set apart by their professionalism and excellence in military services. Appointed as spokesperson of Southern Command in Zamboanga City from 2002 to 2003, and as chief of the Public Information Office of the AFP and the concurrent spokesperson from 2003 to 2004, Col. Lucero served as the voice of the organization. Although the position proved to be taxing for the military man, who is supposed to be stoic and content to let his actions speak for him, Col. Lucero demonstrated incomparable competence. His skillful handling allowed him to effectively respond to all the negative feedback thrown against the AFP, including the Oakwood Mutiny, the scandal about the ill-gotten wealth of some military generals, the Garci scandal, and other rumors of coups and destabilization. After being awarded by the Foundation, 2011 TOPS and COPS winners received similar recognitions and commendations from government executives, national and LGU leaders, and other socio-civic organizations, validating further the programs’ role as an expression of the civilian sector’s appreciation and gratitude for the protectors of the country and our people. Past awardees also continued to be recognized for their sustained exemplary public service, such as 2008 outstanding soldiers Col. Joselito Kakilala, MSgt. Jesus Fabian, and Commodore Jose Renan Suarez who accepted top honors from the Civil Service Commission (CSC) Search for Outstanding Officials and Employees. MSgt. Fabian received the Presidential Lingkod Bayan award for his invaluable contribution to counter-terrorism and the security of Filipinos while Col. Kakilala received the same award for his tactical approach to counter-insurgency, gallantry in combat, and social concern for communities under his watch. Meanwhile, Commo. Suarez earned the Pag-Asa Award for his meritorious and invaluable service in the methodical implementation of the Philippine Navy Modernization Program. Annual Report 2011 13 Government partner Shared passion Synergy for a common cause Tapping best practices Inspiring change Giving back Forging alliance True to his philanthropic commitment to give back to society and to express his Chinese New Year felicitations, Metrobank Group founder and chairman Dr. George S.K Ty donated Php 10 million worth of food packages to 10,000 families in identified 17 areas nationwide. Dubbed as “Bags of Blessing”, this gesture of goodwill helped underprivileged families and calamity victims in coordination with government agencies and local government units. Indeed, this event marked another milestone for the Metrobank Group, as it brought together its subsidiaries, affiliates, and employee volunteers, in order to make this nationwide endeavor a success. Giving back is at the core of the Metrobank Foundation’s goal to build the nation. It is the passion the Foundation shares with like-minded institutions in working towards strengthening key sectors of Philippine society. It is the message the Foundation instills among beneficiaries and awardees, encouraging them to pay it forward and serve as agents of positive influence among their peers. It is the philosophy that has made the Foundation a CSR champion not only within the Metrobank Group, but also in the larger community, which continues to recognize our humble contributions to improving the lives of the Filipino people. Annual Report 2011 15 Planting the Seeds of Tomorrow As a staunch advocate of sustainable growth and development, the Foundation sustained its support to initiatives and programs to promote environment protection and conservation last year. To commemorate its 32nd anniversary, the Foundation conducted a tree-planting activity together with the Toyota Motor Philippines Foundation (TMPF). Foundation staff and officers rolled up their sleeves for Mother Earth and sowed some 600 of rare species of Kalumpit, Tabon-tabon, Balukang, and Balobo tree seedlings at the Toyota Forest in Sta. Rosa City, Laguna. Measuring 11.4 hectares, the forest is located within the sprawling Toyota Special Economic Zone in the province, and is a brainchild of Group Chairman Dr. George S.K. Ty, who envisioned a model of a car manufacturing plant that exists harmoniously with its surroundings. The Foundation, too, also led a nationwide simultaneous tree planting activity organized by the Metrobank Group to mark the CSR Week. 10,000 beneficiaries assisted through the “Bags of Blessing” 16 M etrobank Foundation, I nc. Dubbed “You’re in Green Hands,” it gathered an unprecedented 1,854 volunteers of the Metrobank Purple Hearts Club and from the subsidiaries & affiliates of the Metrobank Group, who planted about 17,500 seedlings in nine sites across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. The project aptly symbolized the Group’s growing commitment to its responsibility as good stewards of the environment for future generations. Sharing “Bags of Blessing” “It is our wish that other companies will also follow in the footsteps of the Metrobank Group and initiate this kind of activity in the future,” says DSWD Secretary Dinky Soliman, lauding the special gift-giving drive, “Bags of Blessing.” Instead of hosting a lavish party for its clients, Metrobank Group chose to celebrate the Chinese New Year with the less fortunate by distributing P10-million worth of bags of goods to 10,000 poor families all over the country including those who were affected by natural calamities in 2010. Being the Group’s CSR arm, the Foundation led and mobilized more than 1,000 employee volunteers from the Metrobank Purple Hearts Club and their counterparts at the Manila Doctors Hospital (MDH) for the project held on February 3 to 9, 2011. 17,500 seedlings planted in nine sites across Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao through the “You’re in Green Hands” A total of1,854 volunteers of the Metrobank Purple Hearts Club as well as volunteers from subsidiaries & affiliates of the Metrobank Group during the “You’re in Green Hands” Group Chairman Dr. George S.K. Ty gave the donation in the form of a pledge to President Benigno S. Aquino III in a simple turnover ceremony at the Malacañan Palace, where the Foundation later hosted an appreciation dinner for its different communications and media units and staff. Each year since 1987 when the Foundation first presented its outstanding teachers to the late President Corazon C. Aquino, they have been graciously welcoming awardees to the Palace and generously providing assistance in intensifying public awareness of and participation in the Foundation’s pursuits. Converging for a Common Cause A big thank you for teachers The Foundation takes great pride in enduring strong partnerships it has gained during the past three decades with numerous institutions from the government and non-government sectors. Collaborations with like-minded organizations have resulted in successful endeavors such as the annual Teachers’ Month Campaign (TMC) honoring the unique role of teachers in educating the youth. On its 4th year, combined efforts from the Foundation and major players of the campaign – DepEd, LGUs, business, socio-civic organizations, and academe – have helped institutionalize the month-long celebration throughout the country. President Aquino signed Presidential Proclamation No. 242, declaring September 5 to October 5 as National Teachers’ Month. DepEd divisions, both in Metro Manila and the provinces, staged various activities for teachers during the month. Commercial establishments offered promos and discount packages. Inspiring stories of Filipino mentors were featured on popular TV programs, magazines and newspapers, while social networking sites were flooded with messages, thanking these heroes for touching countless lives. In line with the Foundation’s objective of encouraging continuing excellence among the country’s educators, it has formed partnerships with different academic institutions and organizations for scholarship programs for its SOT awardees to pursue higher education. In 2011, it partnered with the Agency for International Development (AusAID) to launch a leadership training implemented under the agency’s Fellowship for International Understanding Program. It gave select members of the Network of Outstanding Teachers and Educators (NOTED), including four (4) awardees from last year’s search an opportunity to participate in a study visit to Australia. Annual Report 2011 17 Professorial Chairs for Excellence More than a decade ago, in the belief on the importance of continuing research to further strengthen key professions in the country, the Foundation linked up with premier institutions to establish Professorial Chairs in the areas of law, medicine, and public service and governance. The Metrobank Foundation Professorial Lecture in the Judiciary is a joint undertaking of the Foundation, the Supreme Court of the Philippines, and the Philippine Judicial Academy (PhilJA) to educate the citizenry on public interest issues. Last year, 8th chair holder and well-known activist lawyer Harry I. Roque, Jr. tackled legal nuances to the Philippine ratification of the Rome Statute of the International Criminal Court (ICC), underlining how the move can help end impunity in the country. By signing the said law, the Philippines unites with the international community in taking a stand on human rights and the supremacy of law even in times of conflict. The Foundation likewise teamed up with the Supreme Court and PhilJA for its inaugural Academic Excellence Lecture Series (AELS) to bring knowledge of law to a broader audience by allowing professorial chair holders to present 18 M etrobank Foundation, I nc. their researches in other venues aside from their resident institutions. Held at the University of the East College of Law, the lecture was given by former Supreme Court Justice Dante O. Tinga. He talked about corporate rehabilitation in the Philippines and highlighted the pressing need for legislators to pass a comprehensive law on corporate rehabilitation. The Professorial Chair Lecture for Public Service and Governance on the other hand, is a partnership with the Ateneo School of Government and the Ateneo de Manila University’s Department of Political Science. Last year’s lecture entitled “Assessment of the 2010 Elections and Ways Forward” was given by Elections Commissioner Rene Sarmiento, who was cited for his sterling record as a public servant beginning from his days as a human rights lawyer during the Martial Law era to his appointment in the 1987 Constitutional Commission and in the government posts he has held since. Commissioner Sarmiento provided thoughtful insights on the 2010 automated elections as well as recommendations for crucial reforms. Commenting on the timeliness of subject matter, MBFI President Aniceto M. Sobrepeña enthused: “While elections serve as an important cornerstone in the exercise of democracy, education is the key that allows democracy to work.” For Arts’ Sake Meanwhile, in line with the month-long celebration of the Philippine International Arts Festival (PIAF), the Foundation linked with the National Commission for Culture and the Arts (NCCA) and the Philippine International Arts Festival (PIAF) to launch the MADE Art Caravan initiative. For the very first time, the competition’s latest batch of winning works were put on exhibit in venues outside of Metrobank’s corporate offices, providing wider exposure to the artists. The MADE Art Caravan also brought along notable art lecturers, who discussed a wide array of topics related to art and design during the 16 learning sessions attended by around 1,500 students in four universities and colleges in Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. Another alliance the Foundation forged to bolster its commitment to promote and nurture the Filipinos’ artistic excellence was with the Department of Foreign Affairs (DFA) for the “DiplomART: Cultural Diplomacy through Philippine Visual Arts” project. Designed for Filipino diplomats and personnel from the agency, DiplomART will be part of DFA’s Cultural Diplomacy Program, which seeks to establish, develop, and sustain foreign relations through culture, arts, and education. For its maiden run, the Foundation invited two distinguished speakers: noted historian and 2006 Outstanding Teacher, Dr. Ambeth Ocampo and famed art critic and 2011 MADE Painting Competition judge, Cid Reyes. Creating Ripples of Change The Foundation’s legacy lies in the communities it serves - its awardees and beneficiaries, whom it has inspired and empowered to become better members of the society and agents of positive influence among their peers. They make the Foundation’s humble contributions to nation building more relevant and meaningful. Policemen Responsible for Organizing, Training, and Empowering Communities (PROTECT) and Network of Outstanding Teachers and Educators (NOTED) worked together for the “Pulis Ko, Teacher Ko at PROTECT Ako” project to train Grade 6 and 1st Year High School students on responsible citizenship that is key to strengthening police community relations. NOTED, which previously developed the lesson plans for the said classes, conducted a trainers’ training for police personnel who will Annual Report 2011 19 be involved in the program. Simultaneously, NOTED sustained its initiatives to foster creativity and academic excellence among educators by sharing best practices in the field. It brought its “Lecture Caravan” to Paete, Laguna, training around 200 teachers on effective teaching strategies. NOTED also organized a forum entitled “Rekindling and Sustaining the Passion for Teaching,” featuring inspirational talks from three (3) Outstanding Teachers. For its part, The Organization of Philippine Soldiers with Outstanding Leadership, Dedication, Initiative, Excellence, and Responsibility to Society (TOPSOLDIERS) embarked on a disaster management training project dubbed “Building Community Resilience through Civil Military Community Managed Disaster Risk Reduction” or CMDRR2. The project, which aims to train select members of the AFP, underscores the indispensable role of the military in responding to helping communities prepare for disasters and other natural calamities. The CMDRR2 project is being piloted in Zambales. 20 M etrobank Foundation, I nc. Setting Benchmarks of Excellence The standard of excellence espoused by the Foundation has been consistently affirmed and recognized by its peers within and beyond the development arena. Over the years, it has been acclaimed for the successes and achievements of its programs, making it one of the most awarded corporate foundations in the country. In the true spirit of giving back, the Foundation regards every citation and accolade as an opportunity to share its learnings and best practices with other institutions engaged in social development. Specifically, MBFI sponsored the provision of schools supplies and other basic needs of indigent children and the requirements for backyard vegetable gardening in the Municipality of Libertad, Misamis Oriental. For the past three decades, the Metrobank Foundation has been working relentlessly to ensure that its brand of corporate social responsibility impact real lives in positive and lasting ways. The Foundation always endeavors to make its programs sustainable and relevant to the ever-changing needs of the communities it serve. It is in the belief that it is not simply about giving aid. The Foundation is making social investments for the future of our nation. Annual Report 2011 23 Addressing the Millennium Development Goals The imminent deadline for the achievement of the country’s Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) in 2015 has created opportunities for the private sector to intensify its efforts to contribute to this gargantuan task. In fact, as the centerpiece of its development agenda, the Aquino administration encourages increased public-private partnerships for growth and social infrastructure programs. In pursuit of its social development goal, the Foundation heeded this call and invested nearly Php 10 million in institutions working to deliver on the Philippines’ commitment to the MDGs, specifically those engaged in the critical areas of poverty reduction, improvement of maternal and child health, and universal access to education. Representatives from these NGOs, socio-civic groups, and LGUs personally accepted the Foundation’s donation during the annual Grants Turnover ceremonies in September. Among those who attended the event was Presidential Sister Ballsy Aquino-Cruz, who accepted the Foundation’s Php 1 million donation for the Aklat Gabay Aruga tungo sa Pag-angat at Pagasa (AGAPP) project to build classrooms cum libraries called “Silid Pangarap” in impoverished barangays nationwide. 24 M etrobank Foundation, I nc. The Foundation has also supported other charitable institutions involved in programs to provide access to primary education as MDG Goal 2 or set-up infrastructures that enhances the delivery of this service. These include the Federation of Filipino Chinese Chambers of Commerce and Industry (FFCCCI) through a Php 4-million grant from the Foundation. Ten (10) 2-classroom barrio schools were constructed. On the other hand, the International Institute of Rural Reconstruction (IIRR) constructed a pilot disaster-resilient classroom for Tacdugan Elementary School in San Jacinto, Masbate funded by the Foundation. The said classroom is envisioned to be a model for communities threatened by calamities and disasters brought by climate change. The Municipality of Lubang in Occidental Mindoro also received assistance for its “One Laptop per Child” program. The very first of its kind in the country and in Southeast Asia, it aspires to provide public school students in the municipality access to the latest in information technology by equipping them with low-cost personal computers (PCs). The idea for the said undertaking was pioneered by the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) to create educational opportunities for schoolchildren in developing countries with inexpensive but functional and energy-efficient laptop computers. On poverty alleviation as MDG Goal 1, the Foundation has carefully evaluated and partnered with select organizations which are implementing programs that help indigent sectors and communities to rise from poverty. Our main objective is to build capacity among beneficiaries in different income generating activities. Among these organizations is the Alalay sa Kaunlaran, Inc. (ASKI), an NGO working with OFWs and their families, instilling in them the discipline of managing their hard-earned money. The group holds financial literacy seminars and promotes the development of micro, and small to medium enterprises, as well as delivers basic social services for the socalled modern-day heroes of the country. Another organization we assisted was the Dairy Confederation of the Philippines (DairyCon). As the apex organization of all dairy cooperatives in the Philippines, DairyCon serves as an avenue for dairy farmers in the discussion of common interests affecting the dairy industry. MBFI supported its organizational development seminars for dairy cooperative officers aimed at enhancing their knowledge in managing a business. The Foundation also bestowed grant upon the WAND (Water, Agroforestry, Nutrition and Development) Foundation. The organization seeks to empower the rural poor by conducting research and development activities in the arena of sustainable agriculture, ecological sanitation and promoting rural livelihoods. MBFI supported their project on vegetable gardening in Libertad, Misamis Oriental, where most of their projects on ecological sanitation, small farm development, and sustainable local livelihoods are held in a 6-hectare demonstration cum training farm. On addressing the MDG Goal 4 on Reducing Child Mortality, one organization we assisted is the Children for Breastfeeding, Inc. The organization established the first breastfeeding clinic for indigent patients in a private hospital in the Philippines. As an intervention, the Foundation supported the childbirth preparation classes of the organization that promotes breastfeeding as a healthy option for mothers to reduce poverty and infant mortality. Childhope Asia Philippines, on the other hand, promotes the welfare of street children in the Philippines. It works toward the liberation of the child from the suffering caused by working and living on the street. MBFI supported its mobile health clinic project that responds to the children’s immediate health needs. This clinic also trains the street children on various aspects of primary care. Finally, in the area of promoting MDG Goal 5 Maternal Health, the Foundation supported the program of the Foundation of Our Lady of Peace Mission (FOLPMI) on setting up a satellite health clinic for the tribal community health workers called “Tribal Barefoot Doctors” in Bato, Leyte, assisting 500 beneficiaries. P10.14 million P16 million In 2011 has been donated to 92 social development partners were given to organizations whose programs have direct impact to the MDGs P4.6 million donated for calamity victims of typhoons Pedring, Quiel, and Sendong Annual Report 2011 25 Delivering Quality Healthcare Uniting for Japan and Responding to Calamities The Foundation joined the international community in responding to call for humanitarian operations for the thousands of victims of the tsunami triggered by a powerful earthquake in Japan in March. Following the Php 10-million donation from the Metrobank Group, Toyota Motor Philippines Corp. and Mitsui & Co. Pte. Ltd, the Foundation made a Php 1-million additional assistance through the Philippine Embassy in Japan. Half of the amount came from Metrobank employees, clients, and the general public, whom the Foundation engaged in the cause by establishing the MBFI-Japan Assistance Fund where they deposited their donation; while the half was a matching grant from Metrobank. On the home front, the Foundation remained equally responsive to emergency and relief operations for Filipinos affected by calamities that wrecked havoc in different parts of the country. It donated a total of Php 2-million to the LGUs affected by tropical storms “Pedring” and “Quiel” that submerged many provinces in Luzon in October, including Bulacan, Pampanga, Bataan, Nueva Ecija, Pangasinan, and Isabela. Later in the year, the Foundation reached out to victims of typhoon “Sendong” in Visayas and Mindanao with a P5-million donation to the cities of Cagayan de Oro, Iligan and Dumaguete, and the Municipality of Tanjay in Negros Oriental. 33,000 beneficiaries Over served in various medical and surgical missions 26 M etrobank Foundation, I nc. “We are a health institution providing holistic care that exceeds industry standards and that anticipates and responds to the needs of the patients, their families and relevant communities.” So begins the Social Vision of the Manila Doctors Hospital (MDH) adopted in 2011 to mark its reinvigorated commitment to leadership in the field of healthcare by making it accessible to patients, especially to the marginalized and the underserved, therefore creating greater social impact. As the main pillar of the Foundation’s healthcare advocacy, MDH implements numerous CSR interventions such as medical-surgical missions, community health and school health programs, and hospital services. In the past year, these undertakings served more than 33,000 beneficiaries which include outpatients, inpatients, and those who received free surgery and treatment for cleft lip and palate, ovarian and uterine tumors, and cataract. The hospital also continued to reach out to its stakeholders in the City of Manila by bringing its community health program to yet another impoverished barangay in the metropolis. With the aim to build self-reliant community partners, the comprehensive program focuses on building the capacity of community health volunteers and empowering community members to take charge of their health and well-being. Validating the sustainability of the program is the Excellence Award that the MDH also won in the 2011 Asian Hospital Management Awards that recognized its successful implementation of a community health program in Brgy. 737 in San Andres, Manila. To further spread its reach to other areas in Manila, the Hospital likewise signed a Memorandum of Agreement with the City Mayor of Manila, adopting a new barangay, Brgy. 662 in Paco, Manila for 3 years. MDH’s involvement in its other CSR programs also won the hospital several accolades such an Anvil Award of Excellence for its Recyclables Program and a Philippine Quill Merit Award for its Oral Health Program for Grade 2 students of Epifanio Delos Santos Elementary School in Singalong, Manila. The Hospital’s steadfast commitment to excellence in healthcare also did not go unnoticed as it garnered both local and international awards for its patient safety and customer service projects. Foremost of these is MDH’s historic four-peat from AHMA receiving the Winner of Excellence Award (CSR Project Category) for its program on community health delivery and planning particularly in Barangay 737 San Andres, followed by a Center of Excellence seal from the PhilHealth. Meanwhile, four of the hospital’s service improvement projects bagged one gold, two silver, and a one bronze award respectively from the 2011 Search for Outstanding Quality Improvement Projects in Hospitals organized by the Philippine Society of Quality Awards (PSQua). Another feather to its cap is a set of recognitions in the 10th Philippine Quill Awards by the International Association of Business Communicators-Philippines (IABC). MDH’s “Pause for Patients’ Safety” bagged an Award of Excellence—a system that encourages doctors and nurses in the Operating Room to utilize the Patient Safety Checklist (PSC) following standard surgical procedures. And in the recent 47th Anvil Awards by the Public Relations Society of the Philippines (PRSP), MDH took home two (2) Anvil Awards of Excellence for their programs entitled “Going Green”: MDH’s Journey to Inspiring a Green Work Environment” and “Inspiring Excellence in Pursuit of Quality: MDH’s Journey towards a Culture of Excellence” and an Anvil Award of Merit for “Ngiting Maganda Dulot ay Saya” – A Comprehensive Oral Health Program for Grade 2 Students of Epifanio Delos Santos Elementary School (EDSES) in Singalong, Manila. Despite strings of commendations and honors, MDH is not resting on its laurels as it pushes forward on its mission to provide world-class healthcare to the Filipinos. Last year, the hospital invested in new technologies for diagnostics by acquiring the latest CT scan and mammography equipment. In line with the hospital’s ongoing efforts to get MDH accredited by the Joint Accreditation Canada International, it conducted its first regional workshop on emergency preparedness, response, and management. The event was attended by Canadian Ambassador Christopher Thornley and participants from the Philippines, Canada, and Malaysia. Annual Report 2011 27 Board of TRUSTEES Dr. George S.K.
