Plan de dinamización do Sitio de Interese Nacional cabo Vilán, Camariñas o mar todo
Camariñas is sea,
all sea
Bobbin lace,
value the world over
Vilán Lighthouse,
Guardian of the coast
Shipwreck Route,
a legacy preserved
Natural Heritage,
superb leisure
The port is Camariñas' centre of activity. Boats
coming and going, fishing gear, seafarers
bringing delicious treasures for the most refined
palates: octopus, sardines, mackerel, clams,
razorshells, goose barnacles, sea urchins...
Watching the lacemakers at work is
mesmerizing. Fast hands twist threads
among the clack of the wooden bobbins
against the coira (leather piece covering
the pillow), braiding delicate patterns such
us the Simona, Fieita, Flor or Gitana.
The sinking of the battleship HMS Serpent
(1890) in Boi Point gave an impulse to the
construction of the current lighthouse, with
a reach of over 60 miles (97 km) and
classified as a 1st order lighthouse, just as
Finisterre or Sisargas lighthouses. The
disaster also led to it becoming the first
electric lighthouse in Spain (1896).
Hundreds of shipwrecks have made of
Camariñas one of the most dangerous
places in maritime history. It is a story of
misfortune that runs parallel to a dynamic
business environment with the setting up
in Camelle (1891) of the Costa da Morte's
first Salvage Station and the specialization
of the nationally renowned Camelle divers.
This is one of the most characteristic
lighthouses in the Costa da Morte. The natural
enclave where it stands is breath-taking. In
fact, Cape Vilán was declared a Natural Site
of National Interest already in 1933. It is hard
to forget about this site's architecture, built
on several levels and adapted to the terrain.
The keeper's dwellings are separated from
the tower and connected by a covered tunnel
and 250 steps.
172 of the HMS Serpent crew (only 3
survived) are buried in the English Cemetery.
Their lives, and all those lost at sea, are
honoured here.
Camariñas' natural wealth is another of its
striking features. Much of the coast is
protected by the Natura 2000 Network, and
places such as Cape Vilán have been
recognized as a Site of Community Interest
(SCI) and Special Protection Area for Birds
(SPA). It is easy to spot migratory birds such
as the whinchat (Saxicola rubetra), the
northern wheatear (Oenanthe oenanthe)
or the red-billed chough (Pyrrhocorax
pyrrhocorax). It is home to Spain's largest
colonies of black-legged kittiwake (Rissa
tridactyla) and of European Shag
(Phalacrocorax aristotelis).
Leisure has taken a prominent role along
with business activities in this town's daily
life. In 2012, the Camariñas Yacht Club
became the first marina of the Costa da
Morte to be awarded the blue flag.
Our town's wealth has always been closely
related to the sea and to the different
cultures that have left their mark in the
area: the Reira Mámoa (tumulus), the
Trench of the Wolves –medieval hunting
technique-, the remains of the Soberano
Castle –witness to battles against
Napoleon–, the salting factories in Camelle,
the whaling tradition, the surge in the
number of shipwreck-related companies...
Camariñas handmade lace is renowned
worldwide, thanks to the lacemakers who keep
this ancient craft alive. An annual lace fair, the
Mostra Internacional do Encaixe de Camariñas,
is celebrated every Easter since 1991.
Traditionally sold in physical stores, lace can
now also be bought from the www.mecam.net
website, created with the aim of promoting
Camariñas' most prominent creation.
Visit to the Lighthouse Museum is free,
Monday to Sunday, 11 to 14 and 15:30 to
19h (www.farovilan.com).
