Bob Lansing for The Leader-Herald Wilder registers modified victory By RON SZCZERBA Fonda Speedway FONDA — With the points battle heating up between six time modified champion Bobby Varin and defending track champion Stewart Friesen with only three races to go before champions are decided, Jeremy Wilder decided that it was time to take away some of the limelight those two drivers had going for them on Saturday evening at the Fonda Speedway as it was Wilder who drove a great race to pick up his third career win at the “Track of Champions”. Other winners at Fonda on Saturday included Dave Constantino (sportsman), Luke Horning (pro stock), Dave Horning Sr. (street stock), Ken Hollenbeck (4-cylinder), and Bobby Varin (Empire Lightning Sprints). A special dash for cash with a very unique format was also held in honor of a great friend of racing, the late Bill Anagnostopulos, with Bobby Varin win- ning that event. Brian Gleason was the race leader in the 30-lap modified feature event at the drop of Denny Tilison’s green flag with Jeremy Wilder wasting no time moving up from his fifth place starting position as he was up to the third position at the completion of lap one. It took Wilder three laps to make his way by his brother Korey by the time lap four was completed just before the first caution flag of the event was thrown for Elmo Reckner who came to a stop in turn four. On the restart, Jeremy Wilder was the new race leader with another caution out just two laps later for Jeff Trombley who slowed on the backstretch with a smoking race car. On this restart Wilder continued to lead with Bobby Varin and Stewart Friesen making their way to the front after starting 14th and 15th respectively as they sat in the seventh and eighth positions on the restart. When Jeff Rockefeller ended up in the infield in turn two on lap 13 the yellow was out again and on the single file restart Wilder maintained the lead followed in the top five by Gleason, Friesen, Bodie Bellinger, and Varin as spots in the top five continued to change. Just past the halfway point in the event Wilder held a straightaway advantage and despite getting into lap traffic with 10 laps to go he maintained the lead as Friesen moved into the second position on lap 22 after he got by Gleason for the spot. With two laps to go Friesen was closing in on Wilder but when Wilder made it safely under a lap car as the white flag flew while Friesen was forced to go around the outside of the lap car to get by which took more time it sealed the win for Wilder in the Adirondack Motorsports #24 owned by Bill Schoons and Dave Bogardus. Friesen, Varin, Gleason, and Bellinger rounded out the top five at the drop of the checkered flag. “The track was definitely challenging tonight, but everyone has to run on the same track so we put our big boy undies on tonight and went out there and raced,” Wilder said in victory lane. “We caught a break tonight and started towards the front and I want to dedicate this win to one of my car owners Dave Bogardus.” Complete heat race qualifying results can be found by going to www.fondaspeedway.com and clicking on the results link. Varin wins modified elimination race By RON SZCZERBA Fonda Speedway FONDA — The first Fonda Speedway Modified Elimination race in honor of the late Bill Anagnostopulos from the Winners Circle saw an interesting format of the top five in modified points along with a driver who was voted in by the fans take to the speedway in honor of Bill who was a great friend to the local racing community. That put the top five of Bobby Varin, Stewart Friesen, Ronnie Johnson, Jeremy Wilder, and A.J. Romano into the event along with Jeff Rockefeller who was voted in by the fans. Romano was involved in a crash in warm-ups forcing him out of the event with sixth place in points Jeff Trombley being added after Romano’s incident. In round one Wilder and Johnson ran the two lap distance with Wilder taking the win and $100 from Brian Grisel. The unique format allowed Wilder to choose his next opponent and he chose Rockefeller for the next round. Wilder was able to win round two and a $125 prize from One Small Step Walk for Layne Parks and Parks Companies Inc. For round three, Wilder chose Trombley to race with and Wilder was able to win round three as well and a prize of $150 donated by Shaffer Racing/Happy Harry and Shelly Shaffer. In a surprising move, Wilder chose Friesen as his next opponent and at the completion of the Bob Lansing for The Leader-Herald Bobby Varin poses in Victory Lane after winning the first Fonda Speedway Modified Elimination race July 26. two laps it was Friesen who was able to defeat Wilder and take a prize of $212 donated by Camp Can Opener. There was only one competitor left to challenge Friesen in the final round which was Varin and after a no start on the first try at the green flag Varin took control of the event on the second try at a start and went on to win $500 which was donated by Dirt Track Digest along with an extra $70 which was donated by Bill’s wife Chrissy in honor of what would have been Bill’s 70th birthday on July 16th. There also was a $25 prize to the 20th-place finisher in the modified feature event, which was donated by Eric and Sherry Gifford. All other drivers competing in the event, collected $50 each. The Racing Insider - 2014 — 12 Sportsman Race Report Bob Lansing for The Leader-Herald Dave Constantino poses in Victory Lane after winning the sportsman feature on July 26 at Fonda Speedway. Constantino claims sportsman win By RON SZCZERBA Fonda Speedway FONDA — Doug Hancock led from his pole position start in the 20-lap sportsman feature with Chris Schaffer in tow after starting right behind Hancock in the third spot. When the car of Jason Greco slowed on lap four on the front stretch it slowed down the entire field with defending track champion Dave Constantino already up to the fourth position after starting seventh. The first of only two caution flags in the event was out on lap six for last week’s winner Tony Farone who stopped on the back- stretch and once the race was restarted Constantino was on the move as he was up to the second position by the time lap six was completed with John McAuliffe third after starting 10th. On the inside of turns three and four on lap seven Constantino took the lead away from Hancock and by the halfway point in the event he was out to a straightaway advantage over McAuliffe who also got by Hancock to take away the second position on lap 15. The final caution of the event came out when Jeremiah Munson came to a stop in turn two on lap 15 and once the race was restarted Constantino pulled away again to his fifth win of the season and the 10th of his career in the division over McAuliffe, point leader Rocky Warner, Schaffer, and Connor Cleveland. After wrecking his own car last week at Fonda the win for Constantino came in a car owned by Alton and Carole Palmer. “This car is white instead of silver but it still has the number “7” on it,” Constantino said about the Palmer car he drove to victory numbered 76. “There is no way I would have ever had a car ready for tonight, so I have to thank Carole and Alton who said to come and take their car win some races and have some fun.” Complete heat race qualifying re- sults can be found by going to www.fondaspeedway.com and clicking on the results link. Bob Lansing for The Leader-Herald Horning claims third career win By RON SZCZERBA Fonda Speedway FONDA — The 20-lap pro stock feature event was full of caution flags and action as well with Randy Cosselman leading at the start. Mark Sullivan started the event in the second position and by the time lap one was completed he was the new race leader with Nick Stone in the third position after starting 10th. On lap three Stone was the new second place car and after an outside move in turn three on the same lap Stone was the new race leader after getting by Sullivan. On lap seven Luke Horning moved into the second position after getting by Sullivan with Stone out to a straightaway lead which was taken away as the caution flag came out. On the restart Horning took the lead away from Stone who dropped back to the fourth position as Sullivan, defending track champion Pete Broderson, and Chuck Dumblewski were all able to get by Bob Lansing for The Leader-Herald Mark Sullivan races with Chuck Dumblewski (7) during pro stock action at Fonda Speedway on July 26. Stone for position. The yellow was out again before any laps were completed putting Stone back as the race leader. Just before the halfway point in the event the caution was out again this time for Broderson who ended up in the wall in turn one. On this restart Horning and Stone made contact going into turn one in a racing incident which caused Stone to spin out going into turn two collecting three other cars in the process. The next restart was single file with Horning in the lead followed by Sullivan, Dumblewski, Kenny Gates, and Reuben Kennedy Jr. Horning led the remaining laps despite pressure from Dumblewski and Gates over the final three laps and went on to his second win of the season and the third of his career in the division at Fonda over Dumblewski, Gates, Stone who came all the way back up from the rear of the field, and Sullivan who ran a great race to a fifth place finish. “The track was junk twice this year and I won on it both times when it was so what does that say about me,” Horning said in victory lane. “This new Stone chassis is a great car and deserves better results than what I am getting for it but thanks to Nick Stone who built me a great car.” DIRTCar PRO STOCK FEATURE – 20-LAPS – LUKE HORNING, Chuck Dumblewski, Kenny Gates, Nick Stone, Mark Sullivan, Dean Charbonneau, Rueben Kennedy Jr., Dennis Joslin, Jeff McPhail, Gus Hollner, Bill Knapp, Nate Furman, Adam Warner, Jamie Warner, Pete Broderson, Jason Casey, Randy Cosselman, Cassidy Wilson, Jim Normoyle, A.J. Horning claims sixth win of season By RON SZCZERBA Fonda Speedway FONDA — The street stock feature was a great race full of lead changes and contact with the first five laps being led by Cliff Haslun. Dave Horning Sr. and John Bradt started the event in the sixth and eighth positions respectively and by the time lap one was completed they sat in the third and fourth positions. When the yellow came out on lap two they were the second and third place cars as they swapped the second position amongst each other for the next two laps. Horning Sr. got by Haslun for the lead on the inside of the backstretch on lap six with Bradt also getting by Haslun for the second spot. Horning Sr. was only able to lead one lap at this point in the event as Bradt took the lead away on lap seven but the exciting race between these two drivers was far from over. On lap 10 of the 15-lap event Horning Sr. took the lead away as the lap was completed and then drove right across the nose of Bradt to maintain the lead going into turn one. Bradt would lead lap 13 of the event as they continued to swap the lead and coming out of turn four to the checkered flag Bradt and Horning Sr. were side by side with contact made between the two forcing Bradt to the infield as Bob Lansing for The Leader-Herald Dave Horning Sr. (17) races with John Bradt during street stock action July 26 at Fonda. Horning Sr. went on to his sixth win of the season and the 44th of his career in the division over Haslun, Brian Cosselman, Bradt who drove through the infield to cross the finish line in fourth, and Wayne Rubscha.
