lash floods, avalanches, lightning

wilderness dangers give a new
meaning to the moniker “Wild
West.” The true, and horrifying,
tales recounting the misfortune of
both tenderfooted tourists and seasoned adventurers will make anyone
who is unprepared think twice
before venturing out into the western landscape. Alluring as it is, the
West is rife with vagaries that can
turn a pleasant outing into a final
outing for those ill equipped to face
harsh conditions and rugged terrain.
Even experienced wilderness experts
fall victim to the West’s canyons,
rivers, deserts, mountains, and
wildlife. The price of foolish mistakes
made in this forbidding landscape is
not coming back alive. In this gripping book, the author goes beyond
just telling the grisly tales of adventure gone wrong. A hindsight narrative offers insight into why these

measures could have been taken to

rounded in meticulous research
and written with an uncanny
understanding of the military and of
American Indian culture, Blake offers
soulful profiles of the participants,
both Indian and cavalry. Indian Yell
is filled with accounts of harrowing
sacrifice and tragic misdeeds of real
people. Blake tells of their lives and
loves, their bravery, and their shortcomings in a way that lends a new
perspective on America’s greatest
insurgency.
Some of the stories are well documented in the annals of history,
while others are more abscure.
Large or small, Blake weaves them
together to show that bitter memories of this war still haunt the
American West. These are the struggles that initiated the end of one
way of life and the beginning of
another; this struggle must not be
