A foretaste of your Marseille port call
Imagine you are already in Marseille and let yourself be guided along the
waterfront between the Old Port and the Joliette district.
The remarkable route takes in sun-filled shopping areas, cultural venues
and sea views, with several new places of interest dotted along the way:
the MuCEM, Regards de Provence Museum, or Villa Méditerranée for a
cultural interlude or the Terrasses du Port, Voûtes de la Major or Docks
Village for a shopping stopover.
You may then like to explore the narrow streets of the Panier, Marseille’s
historical quarter, and look around some of its unusual shops. Alternatively,
work your way back towards the Old Port and the start of the Canebière
to spend a few minutes on the esplanade and walk around the adjacent
streets with their many shops, such as those at the Centre Bourse.
All along your route, you will find a number of museums waiting to be
explored, including the Vieille Charité, History Museum, Contemporary
Art Museum, the Marseillaise Memorial and the Musée Cantini.
In 2017, Marseille will be the host city of the European Capital of Sport,
with its new Stade Vélodrome football stadium taking centre stage and
many events on the horizon...

Marseille, Provence, Camargue
3 trips in 1
The port of Marseille is the gateway to a unique experience and the
chance to discover a region with many faces.
Cosmopolitan and vibrant, France’s second city boasts both modernity
and an abundance of culture. Under azure skies, the sea is showcased
in all its glory in the picturesque harbours and grandiose calanques
between Martigues and La Ciotat.
Less than 30 km away are the terroirs and art of living of Provence
as you have always imagined it. Take a leisurely walk through Aix and
admire its baroque architecture; close by, discover the beautiful scenery
with its emblematic olive trees and vineyards stretching from the Sainte
Victoire to the Alpilles.
Only an hour away, nestled between the two branches of the River
Rhône, the Camargue is an other-worldly place of wild beauty. Together
with Arles and its Roman monuments it forms a striking combination of
history and biodiversity, the traditional and the contemporary…
6
Four (good) reasons
for visiting the Bouches-du-Rhône
Because it’s 3 trips in 1
Marseille, cosmopolitan city on the sea; the charm of Provence and its
picturesque scenery; the Camargue, with its miles of beaches and natural
wilderness: all 3 within 2 hours of each other.
Because it has both arts and the good life
Full of history yet creative and contemporary, Provence is an experience.
Whether it’s outstanding heritage sites or living culture, there’s something
for everyone!
Because the weather’s great
With more than 300 days of sunshine every year, the Bouches-du-Rhône
is the sunniest destination in France!
Because it’s easy to get to
Almost 130 direct flights to Marseille Provence Airport; 3 hours by train
from Paris, 3 ½ from Geneva, 4 ¼ from Barcelona and 5 ½ from Brussels
– the ideal destination to begin a cruise, make a stopover or spend a long
weekend.

Your first port call
Your Mediterranean cruise is departing from Marseille.
Make the most of the opportunity to discover the oldest city in France
with a history going back 2600 years, but also one of the most dynamic
and talked-about cities in the world today.
It’s a city in which the greatest international designers have all left their
mark: Le Corbusier with his Cité Radieuse, Norman Foster’s pedestrian
precinct on the Old Port, Rudy Ricciotti’s MuCEM (Museum of European
and Mediterranean Civilizations) and Kengo Kuma, with his Regional
Contemporary Art Fund building to name just a few...
Marseille was named European Capital of Culture in 2013 and has
since become one of the must-see cultural and tourist centres of
the Mediterranean. The city boasts dozens of new cultural venues,
a redesigned centre perfect for strolling around, an exceptional arts
programme – all this coupled with a stunning natural environment and
300 days of sunshine each year!
So choose Marseille – Provence’s ‘Attractive City’!

Papal city and
the heart of Provence…
At the crossroads between Provence and Languedoc regions, close to
the Mediterranean, Camargue, Luberon, the Alpilles and the vineyards of
Châteauneuf du Pape, Avignon is the ideal base for a Provence break.
City of art and history, Avignon in the 14th century was the capital of
Christendom and possesses an exceptional heritage: chapels, churches,
ramparts and, of course, the Palais des Papes and the St. Bénezet Bridge,
today listed as UNESCO World Heritage Sites.
Its theatre festival, first held in 1947, each summer attracts performing arts
lovers from all over the world. Its rich history, abundant heritage sites and
vibrant cultural life make Avignon one of the absolute must-see places,
whatever the time of year.
