General Facts - Safety Eyewear
2,000 eye injuries occur every day, up
to 20% of which will be disabling because
of temporary or permanent vision loss. A
Bureau of Labor Statistics survey found
that 60% of workers who suffered an eye
injury wore no eye protection. And, of
those who did, 40% wore the wrong type.
These injuries cost over $467 million annually. Adding legal fees, judgments, and
the cost of training replacement workers
brings it to $934 million, and that is no
exaggeration.

Markings
There are two basic styles of traditional
Plano glasses as it concerns ANSI standards. The first is a complete device and
the second is made with replaceable
parts. A complete unit has no replaceable
parts (typically lenses). Markings for the
two styles vary.

Hydrophilic Coatings
Are “water loving” in that they constantly
absorb and then release moisture from
the environment. In most work environments, this type of coating works very
well; however, there are some very hot,
humid work environments that will cause
this type of coating to become oversaturated to a point where moisture can no
longer be absorbed, causing the lens to
fog. When the lens fogs, it temporarily
interrupts the wearer’s field of vision.

Hard Coatings

One important clause provides that employer “shall furnish to each of his employees employment and a place of employment which are free from recognized
hazards that are causing or likely to cause
death or serious physical harm to his employees.
Coatings are very important, because of
the added benefits they offer to polycarbonate lenses. Most protective eyewear
lenses are made from 100% impact-resistant polycarbonate. These lenses have
tremendous impact strength, but scratch
easily. Coatings are applied to lenses to
improve their scratch resistance, minimize fogging, and provide anti-static
properties.

Are “afraid of water” in that they react
to moisture by repelling it and cause it to
spread over the lens, forming a thin water
layer. The advantage is that although a
thin layer of water develops, it will drip off
the lens and generally not interrupt vision
or cause the wearer to remove the protective eyewear. A major disadvantage of
hydrophobic anti-fog coatings is that they
are not permanent and easily erode after
repeated cleaning.
Hybrid Coatings
There are anti fog coatings that combine
the best properties of both coatings previously mentioned. The Uvex Uvextreme
Anti-fog coating is an example of such a
hybrid.

Impact Goggles or “Cover” Goggles
The most common forms of protective
eyewear look like normal glasses, except
they have an industrial design and are
produced from stronger materials. They
often have side shields.
Have direct ventilation holes and protect
against direct impact and large particles.
Chemical Goggles
Protective Goggles
Protective Goggles are more all-encompassing in that they normally form a protective seal around both eyes, and the
material is flush to the face.
Basic Eyewear Selection
The protective eyewear worn by employees should be designed for the specific
operations they perform and the hazards
they are exposed to. The eyewear must
meet the ANSI Z87.1-2003 or CSA Z94.32002 standards. The Z87.1-2003 standard contains a selection chart for choosing recommended protective eyewear for
a particular job environment. All eyewear
should fit appropriately. Workers cannot
be expected to use their eyewear unless it
fits properly and comfortably. If it is prescription eyewear, it should be fitted by an
eye-care professional. Training should be
provided for the means of proper eyewear
maintenance, but each worker needs to
be responsible for cleaning and inspecting his or her own eyewear regularly.
Faceshields / Protective Helmets
Used in welding, grinding or sanding. They
can also be used in areas where there is a
potential for splashing of hazardous materials. Remember, faceshields or helmets are
considered to be secondary protectors and
must always be worn over protective spectacles or goggles.
Have hooded or indirect ventilation paths
protecting the worker from chemical
splashes.
Routine Maintenance
Eye protection devices must be properly
maintained. Scratched and dirty devices
reduce vision, cause glare, may reduce
impact resistance, and may contribute to
accidents.
Wash with mild detergent and warm water.
Rinse clean and remove
excess water with soft
tissue or cloth. Do not
use ammonia, alkaline
cleaners, solvents or
abrasive cleaning components. Please see

Radians safety lenses are not only stylish, but each lens option also has a specific function. This lens
selection chart has been provided as a general guideline. Please contact your safety director or Medsafe Sales Person to determine the proper lens option for your specific application. All polycarbonate
lenses provide 99.9% protection against harmful UV rays.
CLEAR – Allowing a maximum visible light transmission, this excellent safety lens is used for indoor applications where
impact protection is required.
ANTI-FOG – Provides excellent fog prevention in high humidity environments where sudden shifts in temperature occur.
LIGHT SMOKE – Commonly worn outdoors to filter moderate brightness during activities where the wearer is in a shaded area,
but the line of sight is in direct sunlight. Allowing approximately 50% visible light transmission, they reduce glare while allowing a
brighter field of vision than a dark smoke lens.
SMOKE – Worn on bright, sunny days, these lenses provide maximum light reduction and are ideal for applications where eye
strain is a major factor. They allow approximately 16% visible light transmission, show objects true to natural color and flatten light
to maintain normal depth perception.
INDOOR / OUTDOOR – This light tint is a comfortable solution for moving from indoor or shaded locations to direct sunlight and back.
Indoor/Outdoor allows approximately 50% visible light transmission and diminishes glare to ease the eye’s adjustment from inside to
outside applications, reducing eye strain.
AMBER – Light gathering properties make this lens ideal for low light environments in which contrast is low; highlights and defines by
blocking out much of the blue light and allows about 84% visible light transmission.
VERMILION – For applications such as inspection where contrast may be enhanced. Enhances target point sighting of the red alignment or leveling beam. Allows 33% visible light transmission.
COPPER – This blue blocking lens allows about 20% visible light transmission and is ideal for medium to bright outdoor conditions
where sunlight and glare cause eye strain and fatigue.
DESERT TAN – Enhances depth perception. Commonly used for outdoor applications. Minimizes glare that can result in eye strain and
fatigue.
COFFEE – Enhances depth perception. Commonly used for outdoor applications. Minimizes glare that can result in eye strain and
fatigue.
LIGHT BLUE – Reduces glare from artificial light such as halogen and fluorescent.
ORANGE – Filters out blue and green light to reduce eye fatigue, improves visual acuity during curing and inspection processes; it
allows 50% visible light transmission.
GREEN – Protects from excessive glare and enhances contrast.
POLARIZED – Eliminates all reflective glare that hits the lens and also a portion that hits from other angles. By eliminating glare
it reduces eyestrain, allowing a crisp view of the surroundings. Around water, it eliminates reflection and allows viewing below
the water’s surface.
Eyewear
IRUV – Worn for applications and in environments where others are performing welding tasks such as torch brazing, torch
soldering, gas welding and oxygen cutting. Available in 2.0 (light), 3.0 (medium) and 5.0 (heavy). As a general rule, the
safest approach is to begin with a lens number that is too dark to see the weld zone. Move to a smaller number (as an
example, from 5.0 to 3.0) until visibility allows effective work but does not cause discomfort. In oxygen fuel gas welding
or cutting where the torch produces a high yellow light, it is desirable to use a filter lens that absorbs the yellow or sodium
line in the visible light of the (spectrum) operation.
MIRROR – These dark tinted lenses with a reflective coating are great for outdoor applications where very bright sunlight and glare cause eye strain and fatigue.
