To start, thank you any and all who have taken the time to take a look at the WPI Chapter of the
Society of Automotive Engineers and the various projects we are currently pursuing.
SAE International prides itself on encouraging lifelong learning and our WPI chapter is a perfect
example of that as our club members pursue a wide array of different projects. As an
organization, we strive to emulate the SAE International model and provide students with an
opportunity to learn and practice important engineering principles outside of the classroom. All
of the design, fabrication and assembly work executed on the cars (Baja and Formula) is
performed by WPI students with faculty and industry advisors. This provides us with invaluable
experience to benefit us as we pursue engineering careers. The WPI Collegiate Chapter of SAE
International is open to students from all years, allowing freshmen to work and learn alongside
upperclassmen and graduate students.
Currently, we are working on expanding as a club to inspire more of the student body at WPI
through new projects such as EBaja and the hope of starting an EFormula project. Unfortunately
much of our learning and the bulk of our project’s success is dependent on donated funds from
various sponsors. For those considering donating money to the WPI Chapter of SAE, you are not
only helping yourself through a tax deduction and increased advertisement, you are also helping
to build engineers that will one day work for entities such as yourself.

A note on the History of WPI SAE from our Advisor
The WPI Collegiate Chapter of SAE International is still a young club. However in the past, most
noticeably 2001, the club sent a Formula car and team to compete at the 2011 FSAE competition in
Michigan. While teams from WPI have attended previous competitions, the latest being 2008, the
2011 team was a true rookie effort and for most students, it was their first experience at a SAE
collegiate design competition. After three days of inspections, presentations and dynamic testing, the
WPI team finished 69 out of 120 registered teams around the world. WPI was one of only 36 teams
to complete every event at the competition, which received specific praise from SAE judges.
Looking forward, the WPI Collegiate Chapter of SAE has both FSAE and SAE Baja teams, who are
working to design, build and test vehicles to compete a collegiate design competition.

Formula SAE is an on road competition. The car WPI students design and build
has to follow a strict set of rules designed to promote engineering and innovation.
The car is a formula one style racecar that is evaluated as if it was a prototype
product for racing enthusiasts. Similar to the
Baja car, the WPI formula car is
traditionally designed by both the
SAE club and a senior project
group. Since a grade is applied
to people working on the car,
the work done is constantly
evaluated by an engineering
professor to be sure the car is
built correctly and to professional
standards.

Baja SAE at WPI is similar to the formula project. The car is designed by both
SAE club members and a senior project group. The
rules differ from formula significantly since
baja is an off road competition. Baja is a
dune buggy style car designed to
withstand
the
harshest
of
environments. The current Baja
competition involves off-road racing
with gas engines and has several
events, such as static events(design,
cost, etc.) and dynamic events such
as acceleration, braking, rock crawl,
and endurance.

EBaja SAE at WPI is a student run project and led by club members. In the
coming years, SAE International is expected to open a new type of competition
similar to the Baja competition and Electric Formula
competition. In this new competition, Baja
vehicles will compete using only electric
power but will most likely use the
same event categories and gas
powered Baja. We are in the
process of integrating an electric
drivetrain, batteries, electronics
and other parts needed into an
old gas powered Baja frame. We
plan on having a drivable car by
the end of the 2013-2014 school
year, and hope to begin upgrades and
refinements in the time before competition.

The EVI Project focuses on the reactivation of WPI's General Motors EV1 electric
car and a marketing campaign to further the education and appreciation of
alternative energy transportation technology. We are looking to choose
replacement batteries, rewire the controller and motor and generally getting the
EV1 in working order again. Once we have
accomplished that task, we will use the
EV1 as an educational tool to get
people interested in electric vehicles
and alternative power technologies.
We are hoping to use the
combination of research conclusions
and EV1 demonstration, both inperson and online, to advance the
understanding of alternatively fueled
vehicles and encourage a more
sustainable future.
